Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Lucky Bones on Route 109 South, just over the bridge 

when you come into Cape May. Rather than reading about our usual 

cocktails, seafood or sandwiches, we tried out their new breakfast 

menu! Well, they began serving breakfast in June, so it’s new to us and 

we’ve been dying to check it out. 

The vibe: It was early on a Friday morning and pretty quiet inside. 

We were sat in a cozy booth right away with a couple other tables sprinkled 

through the dining room. We’re getting deeper into the off-season 

with kids back to school and a lot of people back to work, out of vacation 

mode. While the weekdays are slowing down all over town, Lucky 

Bones is still giving great service and a consistent dining experience all 

year-round. 

The food: Our server Agnieszka got us started with coffee, waters 

and a glass of OJ while we looked over the menu. It took us a while 

to make up our minds — there’s a great deal of choices from savory 

to sweet and plenty of ways to customize items to your liking. Kayla 

went for the fresh blueberry waffle topped with butter and even more 

blueberries. Courtney enjoyed an herb and goat cheese omelet with 

mushrooms and a side of tomato slices and rye toast. Nicole had her 

favorite breakfast, eggs benedict with a side of fried potatoes and they 

also delivered a bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich back to the 

office for Jack. All our plates were served with a slice of fresh watermelon 

which was a nice touch. Everything was delicious and we hope 

to return on a day we aren’t heading into work afterwards to indulge in 

a Bloody Mary or two. 

The takeaway: Lucky Bones is open year-round serving breakfast 

Thursday through Monday at 8am, and lunch and dinner daily. They 

offer specials so be sure to check out their blackboard or ask your server 

— these include breakfast, appetizers, cocktails and brick-oven pizza. 

The specials are also online, but they can change, so keep that in mind 

when planning your visit!

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

As I write, an armada of over one million 

Broad-winged Hawks are setting 

out on their epic voyage from 

eastern forests to South American 

rainforest where the buteos spend 

the Northern winter. Small and compact, 

barely larger than a crow, the birds travel in 

large flocks called kettles that move through 

thermals where they gather in swirling balls 

of birds, riding the column of air aloft. Using 

this technique, they use little energy and 

rarely feed during migration. 

The main Broad-winged migratory corridor 

lies north of Cape May but a strong 

cold front in mid to late September will ferry 

birds this way on northwest winds. The one 

day record is 9,400 set on October 4, 1977. A 

hurricane held up the migration and four consecutive 

days of Northwest winds precipitated 

the massive flight which found thousands 

of Broad-wingeds swirling over Cape May 

Point. While a few hundred Broad-wingeds 

are tallied every year, it is unlikely such a deluge 

of birds will be seen again in our lifetime. 

Don’t dawdle. Life is finite. Get out to 

the hawk watch and catch an eyeful. I can’t 

promise a 9,000-bird flight, but I can promise 

exciting hawk watching any day the skies are 

sunny and the winds north to northwest. 

Bring binoculars, high expectations and arrive 

at the hawkwatch platform between 10am and 

4pm for the peak of the flight. Broad-wingeds 

will be mostly gone by October but big burly 

Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks follow 

and the feisty Sharp-shinned Hawk dominates 

the sky in October. Bald Eagles, too. 

Autumn migration through Cape May is 

one of the planet’s greatest natural spectacles. 

It’s free and limited to a three-month window. 

By December, the birds are mostly gone. 

Broad-wingeds migrate so early because it 

ensures birds of strong and abundant thermals 

while the sun remains high in the sky. 

During the midday hours, the hawks are flying 

so high, they are often invisible to the unaided 

eye, particularly when the swirling kettles 

reach their altitudinal peak. Birds stream out 

in search of the next thermal which is often 

pinpointed by birds swirling ahead. Migrating 

all at once assures Broad-wingeds that there 

will be a number of scouts out ahead pinpointing 

the best thermals. This teamwork 

eliminates the need for flock members to fan 

out and seek the columns of rising air by trial 

and error. Traveling an average of 69 miles 

per day, it doesn’t take the birds long to travel 

the 4,350-mile route to wintering grounds in 

Central and South America.

We’ve all watched a movie or TV 

show where you’re compelled 

to call out to a character, “No, 

don’t do that!” Movies, like life, 

are filled with choices that can 

change the storyline in a heartbeat. There are 

some shows that put you in charge of those 

pivotal choices in the plot and change the outcome 

of the story! But do these shows work? 

The latest such show to appear on Netflix 

is Choose Love. Released a month ago, it follows 

a woman named Cami, played by Laura 

Marano, who has three love interests. She 

is currently “taking a break” from the first, 

another is seemingly a professional protester, 

and the third is a rockstar... like, literally. 

In these shows, you’re given prompts to 

move the storyline how you see fit. Should she 

call this guy or that one? Depending on your 

choices, the story takes far different twists. 

Sounds interesting, right? Or is it a glorified 

video game — or even a take on the classic 

game Clue? Remember that one (Colonel 

Mustard used a knife in the study)? It’s less

random than that, but there are still a lot of 

choices. Choose Love has six different endings. 

Netflix has created dozens of these shows 

— mostly animated (those surely feel like 

video games). Netflix’s whole lineup here is 

being developed so they can eventually present 

actual video games. 

Choose Love doesn’t feel like a video game 

necessarily, but like an academic exercise. 

Sometimes, “Select A or B” format videos 

teach HR or workflow concepts. 

Not sure I would spend my time watching 

interactive movies. And on a list of about 30 

or so interactive shows on Netflix, Choose Love 

fell right outside of the top 10. It got a respectable 

audience score but a splat from critics on 

Rotten Tomatoes. Its interactiveness apparently 

gives audiences more than critics are 

willing to overlook. 

I’m thankful the Hollywood writer’s strike 

is over. I don’t want to make these decisions. 

Let the writers decide. If I want to influence 

the outcome of an experience, I’d visit the 

Escape May Escape Room in Rio Grande or 

Escape Room Cape May in Villas. Here are

kin, Martha Stewart suggests microwaving the 

pumpkin before peeling and carving into cubes 

or pureeing. Then, you can use the pumpkin in 

stews and soups. Stir a spoonful into your morning 

smoothie, into tomato sauce, or even into 

macaroni and cheese to add nutrients. Rinse the 

seeds, toss them with oil and salt and roast them 

for a snack that provides magnesium. Or treat 

yourself to a homemade pumpkin pie.

that the Native Americans taught the 

Pilgrims the “three sisters” method of 

planting crops. Corn, beans and squash 

grow better together. The corn is planted 

first, and, as the “older sister,” corn provides 

support for the beans, which grow up through 

the leaves of the squash to pull nitrogen from the 

air. The prickly leaves of the squash help keep 

pests away while shading the roots. This method 

requires paying attention to the environment 

— you plant the corn when the Canada geese 

return, and after harvest, mix the decaying stalks 

back into the soil to keep it healthy for next year. 

While modern practitioners of the three 

sisters method may use zucchini, the Native 

Americans likely used acorn squash and pumpkins. 

Pumpkins were an important part of the 

Native American diet — they added the flowers 

to soups, ate the pulp boiled or roasted, snacked 

on the seeds, and dried the flesh to use as flour. 

Their pumpkins were likely sugar pumpkins 

rather than the large field pumpkins we use 

to decorate. If you’d like to cook with pumpduce 

stand, but cabbage, kale, and parsnips are 

peaking right about now. At Rea’s Farm, 4th and 

Bayshore Road in West Cape May, you can find 

hayrides and a corn maze, along with pumpkins 

and other fall produce. The New Jersey Farmers 

Cooperative at Legates Farm Market, 3400

West Cape May celebrates the Cape Island’s 

agricultural history with the Lima Bean Festival 

on October 7 from 9am to 4pm in the borough’s

Historic Cold Spring Village will celebrate

I moved home from college last May, spent

time of year is a bit quiet, but there’s always

My mother gifted my five-year-old 

daughter a Gucci bag for her birthday. I’m 

furious. I’ve never embraced my mother’s 

obsessive need to buy upscale. I do not want 

my daughter buying into that superficial and 

shallow pretentiousness, but I don’t want to 

start a war. Of course, my daughter loves the 

thing. Her name is Gina and she thinks the Gs 

on the bag were made for her. What to do? —

Dear Plain 

Nothing regarding one’s mother is ever 

simple. Your daughter is five, so she’ll find 

another distraction in a day or two. At worst, 

a week. Your job as her mother is to reinforce 

your standards and ethics without being 

heavy handed or judgmental. Having nice 

things is not wrong unless those things are 

used to make other people feel bad. Take your 

daughter to Whale’s Tale’s children’s section 

and help her pick a toy based, for example, on 

the environment. They have much to choose 

from that reminds us of what is important.

leash skills and is a people-pleaser. Cooper 

lived with children previously, but needs to 

be the only pet in his new home. He is cratetrained 

which will help with his transition. He 

is also up to date on all vaccinations, neutered 

and housetrained. 

ZEKE is a one-and-a-half-year-old boy who 

came to the shelter when his owner could no 

longer care for him. He is a happy pup who 

loves attention. Zeke is learning proper leash 

manners and enjoys his brisk walks. He also 

loves car rides and is crate trained. Zeke would 

make a wonderful companion for a family with 

older children. 

CHIEF is a happy, young dog who came to the 

shelter as a stray. He loves being with people 

and playing in the yard. Chief has excellent 

leash manners and loves to explore his surroundings. 

He is dog friendly, but selective 

with cats. Chief is housetrained and due to 

his large size, he would do well in a home with 

older children.

FAYE is a shy, but sweet, girl who came to the 

shelter after she was abandoned along with 

her mother. It may take a little bit of time, but 

if you start petting her, she’ll warm right up. 

Faye would be good in a home with other cats, 

but prefers a home without dogs or children. If 

interested in bringing this girl into your home, 

contact the shelter. 

KITTY AND MOONLIGHT are a nine-yearold 

female and six-year-old male respectively. 

These two are sweet indoor cats who would do 

well in a home with well-behaved dogs and 

animal-friendly children. Kitty and Moonlight 

are tightly bonded and they’re unfortunately 

not adjusting to the shelter well. Open your 

heart to these two beauties. 

GUS-GUS is a four-year-old boy who came 

from a hoarder house. He was kept in a dog 

rate in the basement of his previous home 

and unfortunately has poor vision. Gus-Gus 

is a shy and scared boy, but not aggressive. A 

home with no dogs or children is preferable, 

but he would do well with other cats. If interested 

in this true RESCUE, contact the shelter.
