DIRECTOR Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren
WITH Sofía Otero, Patricia López Arnaiz, Ane Gabarain
Basque director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s debut feature explores the nuances and
complexities of gender identity. A young trans girl, Lucía (Sofía Otero), questions the binaries in
her school, and in turn finds freedom and nourishment after spending summer in the company
of her relatives in her mother Ane’s (Patricia López Arnaiz) hometown. This gentle feature
observes a mother and daughter’s quest to learn more about themselves, while capturing the
diversity of womanhood and what that means to each person. With echoes of Céline Sciamma’s
Tomboy (2011), this sensitive, moving drama set in the shadows of summer, captures a joy that
comes from self-discovery. Sofía Otero became the youngest ever-winner of the Silver Bear for
Best Leading Performance at 2023’s Berlin International Film Festival.
The characters in this richly
varied selection of films all have
past and present circumstances to
deal with, while looking for future
hope. Fledglings patiently observes
a trio of visually impaired children
learning to communicate with the
world, in Pre Fab! a drummer looks
back on his time with The Beatles, and
20,000 Species of Bees follows a young
girl returning home, in a summer of
self‐discovery.
DIRECTOR Lidia Duda
WITH Zosia, Oskar and Kinga
This stunningly beautiful and touching film follows Zosia, Oskar, and Kinga, who are residents of
a boarding school for visually impaired children in Poland. Lidia Duda invites us to follow their
daily lives as they learn to navigate the world and face challenges, form friendships, and have
fun along the way. We see their happiness and frustration as they help each other through their
school life, away from their parents, finding comfort and ‘hugs’ with one another. Uplifting and
moving in equal measure, Fledglings is full of love and an absolute joy to watch.
