ABOUT US1.2 Our PrinciplesCOURAGEin seeking creative new solutionsto every challengeMUTUAL HAPPINESSof both recipients and donorsINNOVATIONin how we actEFFICIENCYAND PRACTICALITYin making real a tomorrowthat yesterday did not existTRUTH AND TRANSPARENCYin all choices, in managementof economic resources anddonations, and in communicationTRUSTin what the Association does,in a different future1.3 Our History1988Helpcode was established in Genoa in 1988 by a group of people who, after returningfrom a trip to Mozambique, decided to take action to improve the living conditions ofchildren they had met during their travels.It was in Mozambique that the organization took its first steps during the final years of thecountry’s civil war, by helping women and children in particular, by trying to help childrenreturn to school.To actively support young beneficiaries and their families, the organization immediately beganto promote Child Sponsorship, which still play an essential role in supporting children,their families and their communities.Over the years, the number of our projects increased not only in Africa, but also in othercountries, such as Nepal, where we have worked since 2003, and Cambodia, where we havebeen active since 2006. At the beginning of the new century, Helpcode started organizingtraining and educational activities in Italian schools. These activities have been developedover time, with increasing involvement of the local community and establishing strongerroots in the local area of the Association.Since 2016, Helpcode chose to innovate and started working in new areas of war and humanitariancrisis (we have been working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since2016, in Libya and in Tunisia since 2018, and in Yemen since 2020). An attentive internalrestructuring has allowed focusing on and developing the project sector and relationshipswith institutional donors.2022In 2020, internal restructuring led to redefining Helpcode’s positioning, and subsequentlyits vision and mission, which makes our values and goals even clearer and more explicit.ANNUAL REPORT 2021 13
