OCTOBER IN VENICE
There are several reasons to recommend a visit to Venice, even more so if it falls in the month of October.
First and foremost, the mild climate that heralds the winter season but also offers the pleasures that only a few cities can provide.
But what to recommend?... Without a doubt, the simplest things. For example, getting intoxicated by a lagoon sunset or strolling until you get lost (only to find yourself again) along the labyrinth of alleys; crossing the Grand Canal by water aboard one of the last gondola ferries or being captivated by the multitude of shop windows and boutiques, or yet, enjoying an aperitif, a coffee, an ice cream, a dinner while savoring the city's small squares or climbing one of the many bell towers and being enchanted by a bird's-eye view.

E che siparla di musiciste e cantori donne in un’epoca incui alle donne era proibito esibirsi in pubblico?Rivoluzionaria. Così fu infatti Venezia nel corsodel XVI secolo nel creare un sistema di assistenzasociale per occuparsi dei bisognosi e dei più fragili.Dagli orfani ai più indigenti, agli ammalati, gliOspedali si specializzarono ad affrontare diverseemergenze socio-sanitarie grazie a una rete dimutuo soccorso che coinvolse più strati della societàveneziana. Diversamente da altre città infatti,a Venezia non nacquero grandi istituti che si occupavanodi varie emergenze, piuttosto ci furonoiniziative gestite dal privato, mirate ad affrontaredifficoltà specifiche. Youhave certainly heard of Antonio Vivaldi, or of themost celebrated opera house, the Fenice Theater.But did you know how music in Venice financiallysupported the social assistance network?Over the course of the sixteenth century, Venicerevolutionized welfare assistance for themost vulnerable and needy members of society.The city’s various welfare institutions, calledospedali, specialized in caring for those withspecific health or social needs, from orphanedinfants to homeless and impoverished adults,and were supported by people from all levels ofsociety. Reaching its climax in the middle of the18th century, innovative fund-raising initiativesincluded concerts laid on by female choirs and orchestrasof the ospedali, which attracted visitorsfrom near and far. Music accompanied the holyservices held in the churches connected to theinstitutes. Special music events with a profaneprogram were also organized turning these institutesnot just in a sort of music conservatories,but allowing them to compete with the famoustheaters present in Venice at that time. Thanksto private bequests and generous donations, theospedali acquired impressive building complexesdesigned by leading architects and richly embellishedwith fine art.
