NEWS
“LISTEN TO
THE EXPERTS”
IAAF urges government to consult with
aftermarket on Net Zero plans
The Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has urged the Government
to consult the automotive aftermarket on its Net Zero plans, after the banning of new petrol
and diesel-powered vehicle sales was delayed to 2035.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that
the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK
was being pushed back from 2030 to 2035, while saying he
still expected that by 2030 most new cars would still be electric
due to advancements in technology and manufacturer investment.
IAAF says the five-year delay to the ban of internal combustion
engine (ICE)-powered vehicle sales risks public enthusiasm for
the Government’s Net Zero agenda, but that the implications on
the aftermarket industry have not been fully considered as plans
change.
As part of the Federation’s intensive lobbying activity, IAAF
discussed with the Minister of State for Transport that the
Government’s strategy remains zero exhaust emissions, but it
was also confirmed that the ability to continue to use second
hand vehicles that have internal combustion engines is also part
of their strategy. IAAF has also suggested that future powertrain
technology has not been fully considered amongst the discussion
on banning new petrol and diesel vehicle sales, with hydrogen fuel
cell technology also a viable option in the pursuit of a practical and
pragmatic Net Zero solution.
Mark Field, chief executive of IAAF, said: “IAAF is calling on
the government to listen to the concerns of the automotive
aftermarket and allow it to play a greater role in the consultations
on Net Zero. The aftermarket industry is the leading provider of
service, maintenance, and repair of the 34 million vehicles on UK
roads, so it needs to be part of the discussion.
“Much has been made of the country’s triumphant road to an
alternative-fuelled future, but the aftermarket, as the pinnacle of
a circular economy that has been gearing up for a very diverse set
of vehicles arriving on its shores for some time, yet again faces the
goalposts being moved with little consultation.
“Everyone wants to do the right thing on climate change, but
they don’t want to be unfairly penalised and faced with changing
their mode of transport to a more expensive alternative at a time
when the cost of living is so high,” Field adds.
“The issue is that without certainty and regular consultation,
the automotive industry cannot appropriately plan for the future,
whether that’s powered by petrol and diesel, electricity, or
another alternative fuel.
“The delay proves that 2030 was simply a target, and in order to
realistically achieve this then more discussion with the experts in
service, maintenance and repair needs to happen.”
As an independent trade body, IAAF advocates for the needs of
the aftermarket supply chain including retained access to vehicle
repair information, to ensure suppliers are on a level playing field
with vehicle manufacturers, and earlier in the year campaigned for
retention of the annual MOT.
OPINION
LET THE
CAR DO
THE WORK
So what function is fitted to your car that you
probably don’t use fully or correctly? This
function costs the manufacturers millions of
pounds to develop, uses various sensors to help
make your life more comfortable. And yet, most
of you don’t utilise its function correctly?
The Auto function on your climate control system
What does it do? Why is it ignored by so many?
If we think about the heating system fully, we can understand why
we have it. Most people get into their car and drive off first thing
in the morning and demand hot air. Immediately.
But where does that warm air come from?
The water that cools the engine supplies the little radiator behind
the dashboard. As cold air passes over the hot radiator, it gets
warm by taking the heat out of the water. Let’s call the radiator
a matrix and the water, coolant. So now you have hot coolant
running through the matrix being cooled by the air flowing over it.
The coolant then runs back into the engine, cooling the engine.
All making sense so far?
During spring and autumn, the ambient temperature isn’t too
cold so the difference isn’t much, neither is our demand for heat.
But in the winter, it really comes into play. The air passing over
the matrix is now, potentially, about five degrees. The coolant
running into the matrix could be around 80. A fan on full speed,
in slow moving traffic, could quite easily take 10-20 degrees out
of the coolant. So, it now has the potential to cool the engine.
Significantly.
The engine is most efficient when it’s hot, but we have coolant
going back into it that could be as little as 60. So now the engine
is not as efficient as it should be and the heaters will become less
efficient too, as the coolant is now going into the matrix at 50-60.
Now the engine is unhappy and so are you. So let’s put an
electronic thermostat into the engine that can regulate the
By Onkar Chahal
temperature of the engine much more accurately. So now the
engine stays warm and you get hot air inside.
But we can do better than that, can’t we?
Let’s add an outside air temperature sensor, along with a solar
sensor to measure the sun strength and a temperature sensor
inside so we know what the cabin temperature is. If we now add
a control wheel for the desired temperature, the car can work it
all out on its own. It knows the temperature you want, how cold it
is outside, how hot the engine is, if the sun is out or not and how
cold it is inside the cabin.
So now the car can keep the fans on a low speed, to give you
some air flow whilst the engine is heating up. As the engine gets
warmer, the fan increases speed to give you more air flow. When
the engine is at correct temperature the fan kicks into full speed
until the temperature is the equivalent to what you set.
Now if we put a couple of motors behind the dash, we can
control that air flow. So when we set it to high in the winter it’ll
blow hot to the floor, because hot air rises and heats the whole
car up. If we set it to low in the summer it’ll blow cold to your
face, as cold air drops, cooling the car. Or you can just run it in
manual mode, rendering the whole process redundant!
So next time you get in your car, set the temp between 19-23
and let the car do its magic. OR NOT.
Phil Robinson
installed as NTDA
Junior Vice
National Chairman
On Wednesday the 6th September, at its Executive Council
meeting, the NTDA installed Phil Robinson, Marangoni’s
Senior Country Manager for UK, Ireland and the Middle
East, as its Junior Vice National Chairman. Phil now joins the
Executive Officer team of the Association and, of course, the
line of succession with a view to following in the footsteps of
many past ‘Masters of the Round and Black’ to become the NTDA
National Chairman.
The NTDA has, for many years, been a strong advocate for UK
tyre retreading and Phil’s appointment coincides with growing
interest, from UK based tyre retreaders, in NTDA membership.
Phil was presented with his badge of office by current NTDA
National Chairman Simon Wright, of Halfords Commercial Fleet
Services, who is currently in his second year of office and the
10th member to hold the position of National Chairman since the
change in title from President in 1999.
At the same meeting, the council members voted to adopt
new articles of assocation, which sees a change to the structure
of the Executive Council to better reflect, and represent, the
increasingly diverse membership of the Association from across
the entire tyre trade and associated aftermarket.
NTDAUPDATE
Phil was presented with his badge of office by current NTDA National
Chairman Simon Wright
In accepting his badge of office Phil Robinson said: “I am very
honoured to be elected NTDA Junior Vice Chairman and would
like to thank the Executive Council for its faith in me. I will work
hard alongside my fellow Executive Officers to promote the NTDA
and what what it stands for and its value to the entire tyre trade.”
Phil will be presenting on; The benefits, new developments
and trends in retreading at the NTDA Tyre Industry Conference
sponsored by GB Tyres UK Ltd on 19th Ocotber.
NEWS
● In this year’s Star Awards competition, nearly 2,300 nominations have been submitted to date
by customers of Motor Ombudsman-accredited businesses
● The latest tally surpasses the 2022 total of around 1,500 entries, with just under a month still to run
until the nomination period closes, highlighting its growing profile
● The awards, launched in 2020, recognise businesses accredited to The Motor Ombudsman’s Codes
of Practice, as well as individual team members, who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in
the eyes of consumers
● The 2023 winners of the 12 trophies on offer in the contest will be announced at the end of
November, and the coveted National Garage Star Award will be presented in person for the first time
during the CTSI’s Hero Awards taking place at the Houses of Parliament in London
With just under a month to go until the customer
nomination period closes on 15th October for this
year’s Motor Ombudsman Star Awards, the Ombudsman
for the automotive sector has already received nearly 2,300
entries from motorists across the UK. Surpassing last year’s total
of around 1,500, this is the highest ever tally of submissions for
the annual competition, which allows consumers to recognise
accredited businesses from across The Motor Ombudsman’s four
Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved Codes
of Practice, as well as individual team members, who have gone
above and beyond the call of duty.
The Motor Ombudsman’s awards are divided into two different
categories. The first is the Garage Star Awards – where customers
can put forward an independent garage, a franchise dealer, a body
repair centre, a mobile mechanic, or a staff member from one
of these organisations. The second is the Customer Service Star
Awards, which applies to vehicle manufacturers, vehicle warranty
providers, and the head offices of garage and dealer groups.
In their submissions via the dedicated portal on The Motor
Ombudsman’s website (www.TheMotorOmbudsman.org/Awards),
consumers are asked to cite examples of how businesses as a
whole or one of their employees went the extra mile to assist
them during their time of need, whether this was, for example,
displayed through an act of kindness or a demonstration of an
exceptional level of customer service during the sale or repair of a
car to get their car back on the road, or in relation to the handling
of a warranty purchase or claim.
Against a pre-defined set of criteria, the nominations received
since the start of May 2023 will be whittled down by The Motor
Ombudsman to create a shortlist of 24 finalists for the Garage
Star Awards. This year’s new line-up of judges will then have the
task of choosing one winner and two highly commended entries
for each of the eight regional trophies. Similarly, the Customer
Service Star Award winners will also be chosen from a narrowed
down group of entries to determine each of the three silverware
recipients for 2023.
As part of the continued evolution of the Star Awards, this year’s
overall National Garage Star, who will be selected by the judging
panel from the eight regional champions, will be presented with
both their regional trophy and the top prize of the competition at
this year’s prestigious Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)
Hero Awards at London’s Houses of Parliament in November. This
comes as part of a newly- formed collaboration between the two
organisations for the event, which recognises individuals who have
made outstanding contributions to help others, and is centred
around the theme of ‘partnerships’ for the 2023 ceremony.
Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The
Motor Ombudsman, said: “It is very encouraging to have received
such a fantastic response to the Star Awards from customers of
our accredited businesses, and to see the level of interest and
excitement that the competition is so far generating across the
country.”
Bill added: “There is still time for consumers to put forward
an organisation or a staff member, to give them the best chance
of having their name etched on to a trophy, and for their
achievement to be publicly recognised.”
Joint venture Brembo SGL Carbon Ceramic
Brakes (BSCCB) to expand production
capacity in Germany and Italy
● Brembo SGL Carbon Ceramic Brakes expands production capacity to meet growing market
demand for carbon ceramic brake discs for passenger cars and commercial vehicles
● The expansion will take place at both production sites, in Stezzano and Meitingen
SGL Carbon and Brembo agreed to expand
production capacities for the joint venture
Brembo SGL Carbon Ceramic Brakes
(BSCCB). Both companies have been working
together with BSCCB on the conditions and
implementation plans for this in the preceding
months. BSCCB will invest around €150
million until 2027 to expand by more than
70% production capacities at the sites in
Meitingen (Germany) and Stezzano (Italy).
The capacity enlargement includes the
construction of two new production facilities
at the SGL Carbon Meitingen site with a
total area of around 8,500 m² and the
installation of new production machinery. The
groundbreaking in Meitingen will take place
this fall.
At the Stezzano site, production areas will
be extended by around 4.000 m² to existing
buildings and investments will be made in new
production machinery.
The extensive expansion of production
capacities will enable Brembo SGL Carbon
Ceramic Brakes (BSCCB) to meet the high
market demand and to cover the increasing
customer requests in the future. The need
for carbon ceramic brake discs from BSCCB
increased worldwide. This is mainly due to
the high product quality and performance
of carbon ceramic brake discs, which meet
the specific requirements of automotive
manufacturers, especially in the premium
and luxury segments, where high braking
performance is needed.
The agreed capacity expansion is an
important milestone for the joint venture,
which was concluded in 2009. Dr. Martin
Gruhlke, Chairman of the Board of Directors
BSCCB S.p.A.: “I am proud of our joint
venture and the fruitful collaboration of
the two shareholders. The development
shows that the combination of knowledge
and capabilities of both shareholders pays
off. Furthermore, we have a great BSCCB
team that works hard for the success. With
the expansion, we continue to be a reliable
partner and meet future customer demand
for our high-quality products.”
TYRES
Bridgestone urge
motorists to check tyres
As autumn and winter approach, Bridgestone urge motorists
to check tyres after deflating survey findings reveal risk to UK drivers
Bridgestone is embarking on a tyre
safety drive with motorists across
the UK, after 81% admitted to
never checking their tyres and only 14%
described them as the most important
safety feature on their cars1.
A survey amongst 2,000 drivers revealed
that despite tyres being the only contact
points between a vehicle and the road –
and responsible for 159 deaths or serious
injuries from defective tyres related
accidents2 – the majority of motorists
didn’t deem them to be as important as
airbags.
The results coincide with TyreSafe’s
National Tyre Safety Month taking place
throughout October, which aims to
raise awareness about the benefits and
importance of regular tyre checks.
Other headline statistics from
Bridgestone’s research include 54% not
knowing that driving on illegal tyres is
an extremely dangerous act, only 31%
of motorists admitting to being well
informed on road safety matters and
just 12% checking their tyre treads once
a fortnight, which is the recommended
period.
The Bridgestone results tie in with a
recording of 4,596 total casualties from
tyre-related incidents on roads in the
past years2 and there is an estimated 10
million illegal tyres on Britain’s roads each
year2
Bridgestone is embarking on a new
campaign “Become a Bridgestone Road
Safety Hero” starting with their own
employees but also want to spread the
message far and wide. For example,
Bridgestone is planning on conducting
hundreds of free tyre checks next month,
with its Bridgestone road safety team
visiting Roadchef’s Norton Caines Services
on the M6 Toll on October 19 to assist
motorists, with similar activities planned
for the future.
Bridgestone’s North Region Vice
President Andrea Manenti said: “We
remain surprised that tyres aren’t seen as
the number one safety device on a car in
the minds of so many motorists. In fact,
they are seen as less important airbags,
which often go off as a result of defective
tyres. The results show us that there is
still a lot of education needed around the
topic of tyres.
“For example, the research also
revealed that only 46% of motorists would
call out a friend if they knew they were
driving on illegal tyres, when the very
act of doing this could be the difference
between life and death. With sudden
changes in weather experienced in the UK,
it is paramount that we remind motorists
of the importance of tyre checks.”
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair, said: “This
research by Bridgestone reinforces the
concerns we have on driver understanding
and attitudes towards tyre safety.
TYRES
*RoadSafetyHero_Infographic supplied by Bridgestone
Regrettably, road users often take their
tyres granted for and don’t appreciate
just how vital they are. Tyres are unique
in being the one component which
determines how well a vehicle accelerates,
brakes and steers. We encourage them to
remember to ACT – check Air pressure,
Condition and Tread.”
Bridgestone is reminding motorists
that cars equipped with budget tyres
can take an extra 14 metres to stop in
wet conditions when driving at 70mph
compared to cars with ‘premium brand’
tyres3. Under-inflated tyres will also have
an impact on stopping distances4, as will
cars with poorly maintained brakes.
As a premium tyre manufacturer,
Bridgestone knows the importance
of superior quality and has recently
unveiled its new flagship touring tyre, the
Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6, which
is designed to perform all year round
and enable drivers to feel confident in
unpredictable weather
The launch follows a strong market
growth towards all-season tyres witnessed
over the past five years – with the segment
now representing 21% of the European
market4.
Specifically, the Bridgestone Turanza
All Season 6 excels in providing
Outstanding braking performance
across the seasons, exceptional snow
performance and superior mileage,
offering a 20% improvement compared to
its predecessor, the Bridgestone Weather
Control A005 EVO4.
Bridgestone’s road safety research
represents part of its mission to continue
to provide social and customer value as
a sustainable solutions company. It also
embodies Bridgestone’s E8 Commitment
– a set of eight areas (Energy, Ecology,
Efficiency, Extension, Economy, Emotion,
Ease, Empowerment) which provide a
compass to guide their strategic priorities,
decision making and actions throughout
every area of the business and operations.
Bridgestone’s road safety research
provides Ease, by bringing comfort
and peace of mind to mobility life and
Extension, by committing to nonstop
mobility and innovation that keeps people
and the world moving ahead.
Davanti Tyres
has motorists’ winter
driving needs covered
with its certified
range of winter tyres
With the winter months creeping up on motorists, Davanti Tyres boasts a comprehensive
range of tyres ready for the change in seasons. As weather can change from sleet to snow
and everything in between within the space of 24 hours, the range of products all offer
peace of mind for harsh winter conditions boasting Three Peak Mountain Snowflake
(3PMSF) certification.
However, entering a specialist garage
can be overwhelming for consumers
when they’re looking for a winter tyre
suitable for their needs. But, the Davanti
winter range covers any cold-weather
requirements, and it’s approved for use in
areas with winter tyre legislation. Here is the
Davanti Tyres winter range, explained…
Wintoura
Davanti Tyres’ Wintoura patterns are
designed to optimise driver control in any
vehicle, from city cars to sports cars and
SUVs to commercial vans. Developed in the
UK and proven deep within the Arctic Circle,
Wintoura’s advanced silica compound and
precision-engineered tread patterns deliver
enhanced grip and braking in harsh alpine
winter conditions.
The Wintoura has been designed with
compact cars in mind, providing assured
steering response thanks to its connected
centre rib, and the Wintoura+ provides
exceptional traction, precision handling
and a comfortable driving experience for
high-performance vehicles. Meanwhile, the
Wintoura SUV offers 3D sipes for efficient
clearing of water and extra grip for SUVs
and 4x4s and finally, the Wintoura Van is
designed with a robust carcass construction
that remains flexible and adaptive for heavy
loads, even in severe winter conditions.
Alltoura
The Alltoura 4-Seasons range is engineered
to provide durability and performance
across all seasons. Davanti’s impressive allseason
range boasts a unique tread pattern,
engineered to provide a perfect balance of
performance, stability, and durability, with
Alltoura H/T 4-Seasons for highway terrain
SUVs and Alltoura 4-Seasons for passenger
cars.
Key features which allow the Alltoura
H/T 4-Seasons tyre to deliver leading
performance for highway terrains include:
● A carefully considered tread block design
to provide stability and durability for heavier
loads
● Deep longitudinal grooves and a large
contact patch to provide excellent
performance and safety in wet weather
conditions.
● Solid outer-shoulder blocks to deliver a
precise steering response.
Meanwhile, key design features of the
Alltoura 4-Seasons for passenger cars varies
slightly, including:
● Directional tread pattern to improve
traction and braking in wet weather.
● Specially formulated compound to
Vantoura
Vantoura ●
● Alltoura 4-Seasons
Vantoura 4-Seasons is a versatile and
innovative tyre which has been engineered
to offer exceptional levels of all-season
performance for van drivers across the UK.
It boasts unique design elements which
include:
● A specially formulated compound
provides a blend of durability and reliability
in all weather conditions.
● Three deep longitudinal grooves cut
through standing water and provide the
driver with safe and dependable handling on
wet surfaces.
● Reinforced shoulders and sidewall with
a solid carcass construction for damage
protection and increased endurance under
heavy load.
● An array of sawtooth sipes cut through
the main block sections, engineered to
actively bite into ice surfaces. Working in
harmony with the specially formulated allseason
compound, this feature is critical in
ensuring the tyre provides traction on the
most challenging surfaces.
Terratoura
The Terratoura A/T was the first all-terrain
tyre offering from Davanti. After years of
research and development into off-road
performance, the tyre delivers predictable,
reliable handling wherever you are.
NEWS
First Line Ltd celebrates 40 years
of growth and innovation
First Line Ltd. is marking its
40th anniversary in 2023, as the
company celebrates its continued
commitment to providing
customers with a comprehensive
range of high-quality, automotive
aftermarket components.
Founded in 1983 as Filter International
by Peter Joyner and John Madden,
the forward-thinking duo are still very
much involved in the business today, as they
remain owners and key chairholders of the
company.
Since the company launched four decades
ago, it has continued to experience a
trajectory of growth, with the First Line
brand introduced in 1987 to advance its
multiple product range portfolio.
To reflect this, its Steering and Suspension
programme was launched in 1992, with an
initial 1,000 references in the range, which
at the time was the most comprehensive
range available.
To this day, First Line remains a market
leader and now offers the aftermarket an
impressive range of over 9,200 premium
quality Steering & Suspension components
as part of our 40,000 references across 60
different product lines.
With business booming, the company
opened its Belfast Distribution Centre in
2004, before acquiring the well-established,
100-year-old inventors of the practical
sliding clutch, Borg & Beck brand, in 2006,
which has proved to be a key milestone in
the company’s heritage.
Now, with more than 170 employees
worldwide and a loyal, international
customer base, First Line provides
customers with efficient logistics in the UK
and globally, with products distributed in
more than 80 countries around the world,
including the USA, France, Spain, Poland,
Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Australia and
New Zealand.
Throughout the past 40 years, customer
service has always remained a priority,
and with the business experiencing yearon-year
success, it moved to a new
12,000m2distribution centre in Banbury,
Oxfordshire, in 2012, expanding to 16,000m2
in 2013 to accommodate demand, while
also introducing the Key Parts brand and the
Borg & Beck Braking line.
Scooping more than 25 awards over the
past forty years, First Line has continued
to assess the market and introduce new
product categories to meet ongoing
demand, including the launch of its
Commercial Vehicle product range in 2016.
Its status as a leading supplier was
solidified with the company ranking in the
Sunday Times/ HSBC International Track
200 for the third time in four years in 2016,
before achieving ISO9001:2015 in 2017.
Just last year, First Line became
a Premier Data Supplier to TecDoc,
as a result of stringent data quality
assessments, and launched a new range
of CV Joints and Driveshafts this year,
as it continues on its mission to remain
a reliable and trusted supplier to the
independent repair sector.
To this day, the business still operates
with a family-run approach, with Managing
Director Dan Joyner, son of founder Peter
Joyner, commenting: “We’re proud of
all that we have achieved over the past
40 years – all of which wouldn’t have
been possible without the support of
our hardworking and loyal employees,
suppliers and customer base.
“Innovation has been integral to First
Line’s growth, and it’s clear through our
constant commitment to evolution that
we’re not one to stand still within the
market.
“Demand has changed significantly
over the years, and by investing heavily in
research and development, as well as a
key focus on quality, we have been able to
provide motor factors and independent
garages with reliable ranges that
technicians can fit first time.
“With the future looking bright for the
sector, it’s important that we have one eye
firmly on the future, embracing upcoming
trends and technology – adopting this
mindset means we can look forward to
continuing to support customers for a long
time to come.”
Today, First Line Ltd. continues to
offer the independent aftermarket an
extensive product portfolio of over 40,000
references across more than 60 product
lines, distributed via its three established
brands: First Line, Borg & Beck, and Key
Parts.
UFI Filters presents
multifunctional filtration
module for FPT F28
● Integration of multiple
UFI Filters, renowned for the development of
filtration and thermal management systems
for Original Equipment and the Aftermarket,
confirms its long-standing partnership with
FPT Industrial. The Italian group has chosen
UFI diesel filter technology for its latest
generation FPT F28 Stage V engine.
The integration of multiple functions into
one extremely compact module are the
fundamental advantages of the UFI filtration
system, and have significantly contributed to
the success of this product. Both the filter
and diesel pre-filter are assembled in a single
aluminum die-cast support and combine
the function of the priming pump, heater,
temperature and water presence sensors.
The temperature sensor and heater are
essential for optimal thermal management of
the fuel, even in the harshest environmental
conditions. In fact, the engine is intended for
agricultural applications, such as the Carraro
‘Agricube Pro’ range of specialised orchard
and vineyard tractors. This type of electrical
sensors is therefore essential to guarantee
the four-cylinder engine’s operation, even in
open country and during the coldest months,
facilitating productivity and low engine
consumption.
The priming pump is a useful element
during filter element replacement operations,
to correctly recharge the fuel in the circuit.
The pre-filter plays a central role in filtering
the coarsest particles and performs the
primary function of separating the water
from the fuel. This is why it is equipped with a
liquid presence sensor, which indicates when
it is time to empty the separated water with a
purge tap that is integrated in the sensor.
It also has a mixed cellulose and synthetic
filter media, developed by UFI according to
its FormulaUFI.H2O material specifications,
with a water separation capacity of more
than 95% according to ISO 16332 and a
filtration capacity capable of blocking more
than 98% of particles larger than 20 microns.
It thus ensures a replacement interval of
up to 600 working hours. The filter can also
rely on the same filtration formula, featuring
a fine filtration function, with a separation
capacity of more than 95% for particles up to
4µm, according to ISO 19438.
Rinaldo Facchini, CEO of the UFI Filters
Group comments: “UFI Filters is synonymous
with reliability, not only for light vehicles,
but also for engines that need even
higher performance, working in harsher
environmental conditions, such as agricultural
applications. Compactness, high productivity
and low environmental impact are the
strengths that led this 2.8-litre
engine to receive the ‘Diesel of the
Year 2020’ award. We are proud that
we can significantly contribute to
this success with a filtration system
that has been jointly developed with
our customer.”
UFI Filters will be present at
Agritechnica 2023 in Hannover in
Hall 16, C13 and display its latest
developments in filtration and
thermal management.
INDUSTRY SEES LABCRAFT LIGHT AT
EMERGENCY SERVICES SHOW
Labcraft, the Southeast-based designer and producer of commercial vehicle lighting, exhibited a wide range of interior
and exterior LED lighting solutions for emergency vehicles at this year’s Emergency Services show in Birmingham.
The company serves a multitude
of customers and vehicle types in
the emergency sectors, including
manufacturers, converters and equipment
specifiers, always designing the optimum,
application-specific lighting solutions for
each specialist market.
Featured at the show and widely used by
emergency services vehicles throughout
Europe, Labcraft’s Scenelite range is the
first of its type to provide a continuous light
source, illuminating exterior work areas
for ambulances, fire brigade, police, and
breakdown vehicles.
Available in black or white in a tough
polycarbonate case, the Si9 is a versatile
light used in a wide range of applications to
provide a wide beam of bright, white light for
the darkest working environments.
Complimenting the Scenelite range,
Labcraft’s Si7 and Si8 come in standard
white, black, red, and yellow and can be
matched to suit individual company brands,
vehicle types and applications. The solid
aluminium casing is engineered to suit a
broad range of vehicles and voltages and
can withstand changes in voltage, providing
a consistent light output. All Scenelites are
protected against severe weather conditions.
With a 10-year warranty, says Labcraft,
they offer a true ‘fit & forget’ lighting
solution.
Efficient lighting, stresses Labcraft, is
critical for the inside and outside of the
vehicle, with reliability, suitability and
longevity crucial for every operation. These
criteria, says Labcraft, ensure maximum
safety and ease of operation for firemen,
paramedics and emergency support
personnel.
Important too, says Labcraft is the
need for bright yet contained lighting
when accessing onboard equipment in
lockers and storage areas. To this end,
Labcraft’s range of high intensity strip lights
provide the ideal solution, as confirmed
by UK Ambulance Conversion and Design
Specialist Blue Light Services:
“Our A&E vehicles have been designed
to meet rigorous challenges and to provide
the highest standards of safety and
reliability - which of course means we need
to know that the working lights are not
only as bright as possible but also will not
fail. To this end, I’m pleased to say that in
five years, we’ve never yet had to change a
Labcraft light!
Also on display at the show will be
Labcraft’s market-proven Flux light. Widely
specified across the emergency services
sector, the low-profile surface mounted
Flux comes in 3 options, producing a bright,
anti-glare light up to 2350 lumens.
Moreover, the Flux light is available with
optional blue or red LEDs at both ends to
provide bright illumination for trauma and
nightlight conditions. It is 100% dimmable
when used in conjunction with a pulse
width modulator - allowing full control over
the level of light required.
CEN (European committee responsible
for standards in the field of vision) -
compliant units are available and the
Labcraft team will be on hand to provide
full information regarding the latest CEN
regulations, helping to ensure the correct
and most suitable specification for each
individual application.
For safer manoeuvring in poor light or
darkness, operators of larger equipment
such as fire engines and tenders can benefit
from Labcraft’s Banksman light. Mounted
at various points on the underside of the
chassis, the Labcraft Banksman system
delivers additional bright, white light around
the vehicle to areas which conventional
reversing lights cannot reach. It is suitable
for any vehicle required to work in areas
of darkness or poor light and simple to
install - either to pre-registered vehicles, as
‘standard’, or for retrofitting to an existing
fl e e t .
All Labcraft products are manufactured
in the UK and meet vehicle type approvals.
SMP Europe takes
air mass meter
manufacturing fully
in-house
Engine management specialist SMP
Europe has overhauled the development
and manufacturing of its air mass meter
range, with investments bolstering its
in-house research and development
capability, enabling the entire process
to be completed at its Nottinghamshire
headquarters.
Air mass meters are sensors that
measure air entering the engine and
convert this data into a signal understood
by the vehicle electronic control unit
(ECU), which then determines load and
calculates subsequent fuelling and ignition
timing.
Air mass meters manufactured at SMP
Europe’s Nottingham Centre of Engineering
Excellence are developed using the
latest technology, wire bonded to ensure
durability, and tested to exacting standards
to meet and exceed original equipment
performance.
Martin Turner, marketing director at SMP
Europe, said: “Our engineering capability
has benefitted from significant investment,
resulting in new machinery and test rigs.
This means we’ve been able to create
efficiencies and reduce the costs of tooling
and manufacture by bringing many of these
processes in house.
“This efficiency however doesn’t infringe
on the quality of the end part, with SMP
Europe dedicated to delivering the best
performing air mass meters available to the
aftermarket.”
New parts engineered at SMP Europe
are taken through numerous processes
to ensure quality, with each component
issued with a serialised certificate offering
customers peace of mind.
SMP Europe’s team of experienced
engineers have designed and produced
in-house test and calibration machines
to ensure fully accurate calibration and
product reliability through extensive and
exacting quality assurance methods.
TRAINING
New survey reveals how
young automotive students
feel about a future career in
the industry
Autotech Academy, an organisation dedicated to supporting
the transition of newly qualified automotive students onto the
industry’s career ladder, has unveiled a new survey report that
shines a spotlight on the aspirations, concerns, and expectations
of young vehicle technicians aged 16-24.
The results of the survey, conducted between June and August
2023, indicate that the industry urgently needs to prioritise the
next generation of automotive talent and highlight the pressing
need for a more far-sighted approach.
Skills shortages and the youth perspective
For years, the automotive industry has grappled with skills shortages
and the challenge of attracting fresh talent. In fact, the Institute
of the Motor Industry (IMI) says there are 160,000 vacancies in the
sector that need filling by 2031. Autotech Academy’s ‘Automotive
Future Survey Report’ presents a stark view of the situation. The
survey, which focused on respondents across 90 colleges in the UK,
found that around 42% lack confidence in securing a well-paid job
within the industry after completing their automotive course.
A passionate, ambitious workforce
The survey reveals an industry brimming with ambition, with two
thirds of respondents citing their unwavering passion for all things
automotive as the primary reason for choosing this career path.
Over 15% reported that they prefer the hands-on nature of the
automotive industry, emphasising the value of practical skills.
Encouragingly, almost ALL respondents (95%) expressed their
desire to carve out a career in the automotive industry.
The drive for career satisfaction
Young technicians aren’t simply seeking employment, they’re
searching for a fulfilling career. Nearly 90% of them are confident
that they will find enjoyment in their chosen profession in the
automotive industry.
Interestingly, these aspiring vehicle technicians prioritise
job enjoyment above all else when considering employment
opportunities, giving it an average rating of 4.97 out of 5.
A resounding 85% envision a long-term future as vehicle
technicians, a dedication which signifies a commitment to the
industry and a desire for career stability.
Urgent industry action required
However, there’s a stark discrepancy between enthusiasm and
confidence in the industry’s ability to provide well-paid jobs.
Two thirds of respondents are confident they will find employment
in the motor industry. But when it comes to finding a well-paid job
in the sector, that confidence slips by almost 9%. In an era where
the automotive sector faces a severe skills shortage, this lack of
confidence in competitive salaries is a serious concern.
This means that a third of newly qualified or nearly qualified
vehicle technicians don’t have the confidence necessary to pursue
their qualification as a profession. It is clear that this lack of
assurance among many young vehicle technicians is a significant
cause for concern. This is likely due in part to the fact that
automotive employers are often unwilling to consider hiring qualified
candidates without practical experience.
Creating a robust talent pool
The UK’s motor industry simply cannot afford to lose these talented
individuals, and it is therefore imperative that we find ways to
develop more inclusive and accessible
employment practices in our sector.
By doing so, the industry can create
a more robust and competitive talent
pool, to the benefit of everyone
involved.
It was the very foundation on which
Autotech Group founded its Autotech
Academy division.
Providing newly qualified
technicians with a pathway into
automotive employment through a paid internship. Every candidate
is vetted, interviewed, and provided with a toolbox and uniform
before embarking on a 6-12 month internship.
Since its launch in 2021, Autotech Academy has placed nearly 300
interns across the industry with a success rate of over 85% of these
young people transitioning to permanent employment at the end of
their internship period.
Simon King, Interim CEO of Autotech Group, comments: “Autotech
Academy’s ‘Automotive Future Survey Report’ is a call to action. It
highlights the passion, ambition, and potential of the next generation
of vehicle technicians and is a reminder that the automotive industry
has much to offer in terms of innovation and opportunity.
“Yet, it is essential to continue promoting and supporting the
sector to ensure a strong and sustainable future for both the
industry and the skilled professionals dedicated to it. By addressing
these issues head-on, we can nurture the young talent that will help
drive the automotive industry forward and ensure that its future is
stable.”
