A spirit 

of hope 

is in 

the air, 

and the 

anticipation 

of 

change is 

palpable. 

As we all share concern about the 

economic difficulties, we expect 

that the new administration will 

also elevate the health care reform 

debate. The American health care 

system is second to none, but other 

developed countries are able to 

provide similar or better outcomes 

at a much lower cost. 

It is well documented that more 

health care dollars are spent at end 

of life than any other period in our 

lives. It is also clear that despite 

our wishes not to die in a hospital, 

a majority of Americans (77%) die 

in an institution rather than at 

home 1 . This outcome is even more 

significant in minority communities. 

When we couple these issues 

with the fact that the number of 

Americans over age 85 will double 

to 10 million by the year 2030 2 , 

the impending health care crisis 

is quite concerning. 

Hospice is part of our health care 

solution. Hospice delivers what is 

arguably the highest quality health 

care in the settings we most prefer, 

and does this at a cost savings to 

the health care system. Our major 

dilemma is that doctors, discharge 

planners and patients and families 

access hospice care very, very late 

in a person’s illness. Hospice is 

about hope, about living to one’s 

fullest and enhancing every 

moment when time is limited to 

months, not years. Yet nearly 70% 

of all Hospice patients are with us 

less than 30 days. 

Medical education can play 

an important role in changing our 

perspectives and understanding 

of hospice and palliative care. Yet 

our medical education system is 

woefully inadequate when considering 

palliative care education and 

training. Today, 74% of physician

in end-of-life care and 83% of 

residencies offer no hospice rotation. 

Furthermore, 41% of medical students 

never witnessed an attending 

talking with a dying person or his 

family, and 35% never discussed 

the care of a dying patient with a 

teaching attending. 3 

The Center for Hospice & 

Palliative Care has taken a bold 

initiative with our partner, The 

University of Buffalo, to fundamentally 

change the training and 

education of the next generation 

of practitioners and caregivers. We 

propose to create a national collaborative 

model for palliative care in 

our Palliative Care Institute. This 

program would facilitate palliative 

care education, training and research 

with all of the health care departments 

at The University at Buffalo. 

UB’s medical school already has a 

robust partnership with Hospice, 

and is one of only 17 medical 

schools to have state-of-the-art 

medical fellowship training with 

Hospice and the Veterans 

Administration hospital. But 

no university in the country has 

developed a cross-university commitment 

to hospice & palliative 

care. It is our hope and belief that 

Hospice Buffalo and our education 

partners can create a world-class 

model of training, education and 

research that both improves the 

quality of care for Western New 

Yorkers, and can be replicated 

across the country. 

Hospice Buffalo has never 

been stronger, and is able to create 

value for our patients, family, and 

community. We continue to lead 

the nation in innovation and 

quality at end-of-life. The Board 

and Leadership of Hospice wish to 

express our collective gratitude for

Crafter Continues Her Arts, Thanks to Hospice 

Like many people, Dolores Blattenberger, 

learned about Hospice when she was in the hospital 

last June. “I was so weak, I couldn’t stand up,” the 

79 year-old recalled as she talked in her kitchen. 

“My body would shake, it was terrible. They did all 

kinds of testing to find out what it was.” The hospital 

tests indicated that Dolores had congestive 

heart failure and that her heart was operating at 

only ten percent. It looked like Dolores had very 

little time left to be with her family. 

The hospital staff referred Dolores to Hospice care and a Hospice nurse 

came to visit her. She went home with Hospice’s Optimum Care program 

but soon had to be hospitalized because her severe heart condition was 

causing her to shake and to not be able to eat. IV fluids were administered 

and Dolores soon was discharged to the Mary and Ralph Wilson, Jr. Hospice 

Inpatient Unit. 

“I was in the Unit about six days,” said Dolores. Under the care of Sue 

Hebert, NP and Christopher Kerr, M.D., Ph.D., medical director of The 

Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Dolores was gradually weaned off of 

powerful multiple IV heart medicines which were thought to be life sustaining. 

The gradual process occurred over several months and enabled Dolores to 

regain her freedom to move and to receive rehabilitation at the Hospice Buffalo 

House at Mitchell Campus, her home away from home for four months. 

“I think a lot of people, myself included, thought Hospice is just for the 

last few days of life,” stated Dolores. “At the time, my kids thought so, too, 

because of how I looked and how I was feeling.” While at the Hospice House, 

Dolores received daily care from the Hospice home health aides, and regular 

visits from music therapists, massage therapists and medical care from the 

Hospice nurse and physician. She made quite a few friends during her stay 

and was able to return to her home this past October. 

“The girls at Hospice House are just fabulous,” she smiles. “They just 

called me today to say hello.” With the visits from her Hospice home care 

team, Dolores is able to continue doing her knitting and crafts as well as 

bake one of her favorite treats, pineapple upside down cake.

“She remembers everything,” added 

her Hospice social worker, Anne 

Binga, who sees Dolores regularly 

and arranged for Meals on Wheels 

to assist her. “She still drives to the 

bank and makes short trips. She has 

a close group of friends who visit 

with her. She’s very independent.” 

Each week, or more frequently 

if needed, Hospice nurse Sandra 

Renner comes to see Dolores. “How 

are you sleeping at night?” asked 

Sandra during a Friday afternoon 

visit. “Any light headedness?” 

Dolores affirms she is doing well 

but experiencing fatigue. The two 

women admire the beautiful purple 

sweater that Dolores is creating. 

Like old friends, they chat about 

their families and laugh about 

Dolores’ ability to make conversation. 

“I’m a talker,” she smiles. 

In addition to her Hospice social 

worker and nurse, Dolores also 

receives care from a Hospice home 

health aide two times a week to 

assist with laundry and light housekeeping. 

She also is seen by Don 

Blesnuk, a Hospice chaplain. 

“I want people to know that 

Hospice is not a death sentence… 

Hospice staff are very talented and 

will do everything they can to make 

you well. They seem to anticipate 

your needs and watch you so closely. 

My family and I think Hospice is 

wonderful.”

Benefit Hospice 

On October 3, President Bush 

signed the $700 billion economic 

bailout bill, which includes a twoyear 

extension of the charitable 

IRA Rollover provision. The 

original Pension Protection Act 

of 2006 enacted by United States 

Congress included charitable giving 

incentives that are designed to 

encourage charitable planned gifts 

and donations. Included in the bill 

are tax-free distributions from 

Individual Retirement Accounts 

(IRA’s) for charitable purposes. 

The provision provides 

exclusion for gross income for 

certain distributions of up to 

$100,000 from a traditional IRA 

or a Roth IRA, which would 

otherwise be included as income. 

To qualify, the charitable 

distribution must be made to 

a tax-exempt organization (like 

Hospice Buffalo) to which a 

deductible contribution can be 

made. The provision will be made 

retroactive to Jan. 1, 2008, and will 

apply to gifts made from that date 

through Dec. 31, 2009. 

The provision exempts from 

taxable income any funds transferred 

(“rolled over”) from an 

Individual Retirement Account 

(IRA) to a charitable organization. 

The following limitations apply: 

• The donor must be age 

70 1 /2 or older.

Buffalo House staff wrote a poem reflecting on the patients and families 

they serve. The unique residence, located at 111 Maple Avenue in Buffalo, 

is a place of comfort and care for hospice patients unable to remain at 

home. The home opened in July 2008 and serves the entire community.

patient-centered, high-value care; 

• Palliative and End-of-Life Care, 

to guarantee appropriate and

encourage appropriate use, and 

achieve effective, affordable care. 

The nation’s economic crisis makes 

addressing healthcare even more 

urgent. With healthcare spending 

on track to reach 50 percent of 

America’s GDP by 2050 and states 

in severe budgetary straits, cutting 

waste to achieve savings and better 

care is an imperative. “There is 

broad consensus among Americans 

that healthcare needs real change. 

We must capitalize on this 

opportunity to improve safety and 

effectiveness and eliminate waste,” 

said Partnership co-chair and 

National Committee for Quality 

Assurance president Margaret 

O’Kane. “The Partnership represents 

unprecedented consensus - we have 

brought the right players together 

at the right time to effect positive, 

meaningful change.” 

“The need to improve this nation’s 

healthcare system is one that all 

providers recognize. This new partnership, 

launched in Washington, 

DC, is a significant step forward in 

making a difference,” said J. Donald

Through the generosity of more than 3,000 supportive donors, nearly $350,000 has 

been raised in our 2008 Year-End Appeal. We are very grateful to all for this expression of 

kindness that will do much in the coming months to provide the important services offered 

by The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care to nearly 600 patients a day in Erie County.

Mr. Izzo has more than 25 years of experience in leadership, management, 

sales, human resources, professional speaking and consulting. Active in the 

community, Mr. Izzo is a member of the CARTUS Principal Advisory Board 

and is a past member and Vice President of Leadership Buffalo. He has 

also served as chair of the Board for the Taste of Buffalo, and a chair of the 

Executive Committee of St. Mary’s Parish in Amherst, New York. In addition, 

Mr. Izzo has provided his leadership skills and support to other non-profit 

groups including Upstate New York Transplant Services, and Essential Care 

for Children, an affiliate program of Home Care Buffalo.

For more than 30 years, Hospice Buffalo has provided compassionate care for people 

nearing the end of life. The Spring Bouquet Sale is the largest event of the Hospice 

Foundation. More than 50 local florists, 450 area businesses, schools, organizations and

These groups restricted their funds to our Family Care Fund. These 

donations helped to purchase Christmas gifts and essential items for needy 

Hospice families last holiday season. 

The Hospice Holiday Promotion was a record breaking success, 

raising over $13,000 for the Essential Care for Children, Hospice 

Buffalo’s pediatric homecare program. Over 200 Share the Bear teddy 

bears, 500 Holiday Penguins and 2,000 snowflakes were sold at the 

Galleria Mall, the Hospice Mitchell Campus and all Fantastic Sams 

locations during December. Special thanks to Fantastic Sams and 

the Hospice Volunteers for all of their help on another successful 

promotion.

September 2001 was a memorable one for 

most of us. In my family’s case, it was a roller 

coaster of emotion. The horrific events of 9/11 

were followed, within less than two weeks, by 

my mother’s diagnosis of stage 4, inoperable 

lung cancer and my brother’s wedding. It was 

a bittersweet time for us. 

After a number of rounds and types of 

chemo, my mother opted to cease treatment 

in favor of quality of life. She wanted to spend 

the time she had with her family, enjoying her 

grandchildren, traveling, and living her life as 

normal as possible. 

In July 2004, the doctors told my mother it 

was time to call Hospice. When her pain got 

the best of her in the wee hours of the morning 

one night in September, Hospice was called, 

and jumped into motion to get mom into the 

Hospice Inpatient Unit. There was never a 

time when my mother did not receive the best 

of care from anyone at Hospice. 

Words cannot describe the gratitude my 

family and I have for Hospice, nor can we 

explain how the dying process for my mother 

allowed her to live out her final days with 

dignity and grace. For the ultimate care, 

concern, and yes, even love that Hospice gave 

to my mother and my family during her last 

months, we are forever indebted to this amazing 

organization and the people employed there. 

For this reason, I give my time and support to 

Hospice as much as I can. 

I am proud to once again serve as the Chair of the 13th Annual Hospice 

Memorial Walk, as well as the Team Captain of “Peg’s Pack,” in memory 

of my mom. I ask that you consider walking and/or organizing a team in this 

year’s Memorial Walk on Sunday, May 17th at the Erie Canal Harbor 

Central Wharf.

Mission Statement: 

The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care serves individuals 

with serious illness and their families and caregivers, through 

a continuum of care spanning the course of illness and 

bereavement. The Center’s specially-trained professionals, 

support staff and volunteers assist individuals to make choices 

about their care, support those who are grieving and educate 

the professional and lay communities about end-of-life issues. 

How To Access Our Services 

Affiliates of The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care are governed 

by the State of New York and most services are covered by a majority 

of insurance companies, including Medicare/Medicaid. 

Referring to the The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care is 

simple and convenient. Just call (716) 686-8000. An intake specialist 

will work with the patient, the family, and attending physician 

to initiate services and establish an individual plan of care. 

The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care consists of the
