Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Beach Plum Bakery and Cafe on Perry Street. This coffee 

shop and bakery shares a building with West End Garage. The shop is 

the home to 50 artists and vendors so you can sip your morning pickme-up 

while you browse local jewelry, artwork, clothing and gifts. 

The vibe: It was mid-morning on a Friday and the line for coffee 

and pastries wasn’t too long. The cafe was pretty full however as it was 

just before West End Garage opened for the day. We perused the packaged 

goods like biscotti and cookies available for purchase plus some 

cookbooks and kitchen gadgets they also have available. Despite what 

seemed like a low morning, the girls behind the counter were hustling 

to brew lattes and cappuccinos and bag up scones and breads fresh 

from the kitchen. You will get a little behind-the-scenes action to the 

baking magic when you hit the front of the counter and get a peek into 

the kitchen where there are trays packed with goodies, ovens warming 

more and mixing bowls galore. Everything is made fresh daily at Beach 

Plum Bakery, using Beach Plum Farm herbs, eggs, meats and produce. 

The coffee and pastries: We treated ourselves just a little bit. Nicole 

enjoyed a iced pumpkin spiced latte — ’tis the season — and a croissant. 

Kayla also had a croissant with an iced coffee while Courtney enjoyed 

a pumpkin-chocolate chip loaf and a couple of cold beverages from 

the cooler. We sipped and snacked while we looked around West End 

Garage a bit before walking back to the office. It’s the perfect distance 

for a morning stroll on a nice day, so we’ll definitely head back that way 

one day to do some shopping when we have more time off the clock. 

The takeaway: Beach Plum Bakery at West End Garage is a favorite 

of ours, mainly for the coffee and pastry selection, plus for its convenience. 

They have a prime location on Perry Street and what they offer 

is always fresh and delicious. We didn’t get it this time, but their La 

Colombe draft latte is a very cool addition to their drink menu. Make 

sure to check their website for updated hours this fall!

If you want to get up-to-the-minute 

readings of migration through Cape 

May. Go to Google and type in Cape 

May Bird Observatory and scroll down 

to “migration watches.” Click on Cape 

May Hawkwatch and then the blue bar. Up 

comes up-to-the-minute count figures. 

The first thing you will notice is that it 

ain’t just hawks. From bats to bobolinks to 

butterflies and dragonflies. If it passes the 

hawk watch, it’s official and part of a data set 

that will map trends in wildlife populations. 

Bats migrate? Some species, yes. And 

in daylight, too. You get caught out over the 

Atlantic at dawn, you have no choice but to fly 

on to land. Dragonflies migrate, too. Where? 

We don’t know. But there are days when the 

sky is awash with these gossamer-winged 

insects. The monarch butterfly movements 

can be pretty spectacular, too, with beachside 

goldenrod bowed beneath the weight of 

feeding insects. 

But if you are just in it for the hawks, 

that’s fine, too. From now until the end of 

November, Cape May Point State Park is 

ground zero for raptor enthusiasts. Bring 

binoculars and lather on the sunscreen. My 

dermatologist is reaping a small fortune as a 

result of my years of disregard. 

Falcons? Merlins and Peregrines should 

be daily from now until mid-October. Bald 

Eagles. Daily. Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s 

Hawks are bountiful. Sunny days with north 

to northwest winds produce the best flights 

but any day that it isn’t raining will produce 

hawks at “The Raptor Capital of North 

America.” 

Not very skilled at hawk identification? 

Relax the cadre of seasonal interns have you 

covered. And there are always local experts 

that can be counted upon to shout out the 

names of passing raptors or the occasional 

golden plover or high-flying nighthawk. Best 

of all, the birds come to you. Relax and enjoy 

the show. Pick up a check list of the birds 

and you can even keep score — have something 

really worth posting on Facebook, for 

a change. 

I’ll bet you’ll tally over a dozen species 

before noon. In fact come October, you’ll see 

over a dozen waterbirds in Bunker Pond. The 

Swarovski spotting scopes are there to help 

you get eye-popping looks at rakish looking 

drake Pintails, spunky Green-winged Teal 

and dapper drake Gadwalls. Every day until 

the hawks go home, dawn to dusk, handicap 

accessible. Front row seating to the world of 

birds.

There are Hallmark movies (and hopefully 

you all know how I feel about 

those), then there are rom-coms 

that have an edge to them. I’m not 

necessarily critical of those. And by 

“edge,” I’m not simply talking about Lifetime 

movies. Yikes, those movies are more like 

“rom-com turned horror!” Seriously, there’s 

generally a kidnapping or some other Kathy 

Bates “Misery” caliber crime going on! 

For purposes of this review, “edge” means 

a story that’s peppered with curse words and 

more steamy love scenes than Hallmark generally 

allows. The endings are pretty much the 

same as a Hallmark movie but with less blood 

than a Lifetime flick. Let’s look at one. 

Puppy Love is an Amazon Freevee original 

(that’s Amazon’s free TV streaming service). 

It stars Grant Gustin, who plays in The Flash 

in the long-term CW television superhero 

adaptation, and Lucy Hale, best known for 

her role in Pretty Little Liars. These two small 

screen dynamos come together to tell the 

story of a couple who has one disastrous 

The Movie Column

date with “unplanned” consequences. What 

made the date an epic fail is that they agreed 

to bring their dogs with them (one male and 

one female). Let’s just say the dogs got along 

fabulously! 

The new couple (the dogs not the 

humans) are going to be pup parents! The 

humans decide to persevere through their 

obviously mismatched profiles for the sake of 

the puppies. Gustin’s character is uptight, and 

Hale’s is wild and free. Despite some overused 

“opposites attract” tropes, the film is more 

bearable than a Hallmark movie. Maybe that’s 

because of the cursing or the “more-edgythan-Hallmark-but-not-horror-like-Lifetime” 

gritty feel. Whatever the case, there’s 

a fine line between rom-com and Hallmark 

rom-oh’cmon. This new breed in the genre 

(no pun intended) is more palatable. All that 

said, I hope I’ve proven that I’m not an unromantic 

curmudgeon after all.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, take a tour and channel the spirits! 

Forget whether it is possible to speak to 

people who have fled this mortal coil and 

ask yourself whether it is rude. We invite 

the dearly departed to rest in peace, 

carving that wish on their tombstones, 

including it in our prayers, and offering it as 

consolation to the recently bereaved. Is it not, 

then, a breach of etiquette to disturb that peace? 

Presumably, if they want to reach out to the living, 

the dead know how to do it. Good manners 

should require that we stand ready to receive 

messages from beyond the great divide without 

seeking them out. Still, many mourners attempt 

this connection, believing it will provide comfort 

to the departed spirit as well as to the mourners. 

Psychologists assert that it’s healthy for 

mourners to reach out. Apparently, 75 percent 

of “bereaved people report some kind of

bonds” may come in the form of a cardinal in the 

window, a dream, a song on the radio, or even a 

feeling. Reaching out can be a form of grief therapy, 

giving us specific actions to take. For example, 

people who practice mirror-gazing advocate 

preparing by fasting, gathering photographs, 

and playing soothing music. Thus, the preparation 

itself fosters a sense of connection that 

helps to comfort us as we mourn. There are a 

variety of techniques to try to communicate with 

the dead, from prayer and meditation, to visiting 

the grave, to consulting a professional medium 

to hold a seance. Some believe completing the 

tasks of holding a funeral, sorting possessions 

and writing thank you notes are ways of con- 

necting. Others carry on holiday traditions, 

share stories or prepare family recipes. There’s 

no wrong way to mourn, so if it comforts you to 

reach out, go ahead — when your own inevitable 

end comes, you have eternity to convince your 

loved one to forgive your bad manners. 

Fall is the best time to reach out, and Cape 

May MAC offers a couple of ways to try to 

pierce the veil between realms, though both 

the “Channeling Dinner with Medium Craig 

McManus” on October 13 and the “Seance” on 

October 20 are already sold out. Instead, consider 

a ride on the “Ghosts of Cape May Trolley 

Tour” ($20 adults, $15 children) and “hear the 

tales of hauntings unearthed” by McManus. 

Or, try the “Historic Haunts Combo Tour” ($30/ 

$20) and add a tour of the Physick House to 

find out how people reached out to the dead in 

the Victorian era. There’s also the “Spirits and 

Oddities Tour” ($20/15) to give you a deeper look 

into “wild notions about the mysterious passage

Nena best. She does require some basic training,

this girl her forever home! 

BLAZE is a handsome boy who came to the 

shelter when his owner died and is a bit anxious 

over the turn his life has taken. He does 

require some basic training for leash walking 

and certain cue but is very treat motivated. A 

home that understands his anxiety and is willing 

to work with him will allow him to grow 

into a fine companion. 

RIPLEY is a friendly three-year-old boy who 

loves to be with people. He is treat motivated, 

which makes his training much easier — he’s 

making great progress with his impulsive 

behavior. Ripley is eager to find a new loving 

home. He would do best with a family who 

is knowledgeable about working with food 

guarding issues and is ready for some energy.
