Intracystic Papillary <strong>Carcinoma</strong><br />

with Adjacent Low Low-grade grade DCIS DCIS.<br />

(Encapsulated Papillary <strong>Carcinoma</strong>)<br />

Intracystic Papillary <strong>Carcinoma</strong><br />

• IPC “uncommon” breast tumor.<br />

• Elderly patients (median ~70 yrs, range 27<br />

to 99);<br />

• Discrete, circumscribed solitary masses<br />

(usually central & subareolar)<br />

• At least 1 cm diameter (Carter defined).<br />

• ~3.5% <strong>of</strong> IPC cases occur in men.<br />

Carter et al. Cancer 1977 & 1983<br />

• Carter et al. among first to report this tumor.<br />

• 41 cases, mean age 63 yrs (range 42-87).<br />

• Mean size 3.5 cm (range 1-14 cm).<br />

• Cystic & encapsulated; none infiltrating.<br />

• Adenocarcinoma projected into cystic cavity.<br />

• Bound by fibrosis, <strong>of</strong>ten recent or old hemorrhage,<br />

chronic inflammation.<br />

• Wall may or may not have epithelium.<br />
