Clifton welcomes visitors like family
Where in the beautiful
state of Arizona
can you
start your day sitting at a
family-owned restaurant,
eating the most yummy
homemade breakfast fit
for a king, enjoying all the
coffee you like surrounded
by the most friendly people
you didn’t know 30 minutes
ago, but feel like family
now?
The staff at PJ’s suggest
that your next stop be to
visit Leslie and her staff at
Clifton AVIC visitors center,
where you can get all
the info on where to go,
what to see and lots of brochures
and info to enjoy
your day. Down the road
you see the beautiful historic
train depot that houses
the visitors center. When
entering you are greeted
by a very friendly, helpful
volunteer ready to help you
plan your day.
As you talk, you see two
trains clacking by right outside
the window, delivering
acid up to the largest open
pit copper mine in North
America, Freeport McMo-
Ran. You are given brochures
and magazines. Our
favorite features are the
birding trails with maps and
cards showing the different
kinds of rare birds you
might see, and a map showing
where to stop and see
the mine overlook where
you can actually see for
miles the operation of copper
mining. As you leave
the center you are given a
small bag with little pieces
of copper samples from the
mine.
Coming back down Hwy.
191, you find historic Chase
Creek. Moseying down the
street, you can stop and see
some amazing antiques,
one-of-a-kind toys and
books, an apothecary, hundreds
of displays of history
in the historic museum, the
old union hall where there is
the famous full-sized mural
of the copper strike and the
effects on the town — quite
impressive. Several more
shops to see, then probably
time to stop and enjoy a
cold beverage at the Clifton
Hotel, newly renovated and
offering yummy treats. Relaxing
in a group of friendly,
family-type people, you
realize you have discovered
a secret that needs to be
shared. Clifton, Arizona is
not only a very great place
to visit, with lots to do,
but most important has the
friendliest people you will
ever meet.
Zane Grey’s Cabin
BY C.F. YANKOVICH
Staff Reporter
Escape the lingering
summer heat with a
trip up to Payson to
see Zane Grey’s cabin, next
to the Rim Country Museum
in Green Valley Park.
See how the master of conjuring
romantic images of
the Old West lived while he
was in Arizona.
The Hollywood version
of where the father of
the modern Western novel
lived would be a huge
house with lace curtains
and fancy furniture. That
describes Grey’s home in
Altadena. His Arizona reality
was a one-room cabin
with a kitchen on the back
porch, a galvanized bathtub
and bearskins hung
above the windows to keep
Grey’s dogs from ripping
them up. According to our
guide, the bearskins stank
so badly that despite there
being a bed, no one slept in
the cabin. Grey preferred to
sleep outside, and his wife
remained at their home in
California with their children.
Grey’s first book, Betty
Zane, was published in
1905. Grey also designed
the book cover. A copy is
displayed in the middle of
the house.
The artwork surrounding
the fireplace was by
his wife’s cousin, Lillian
the heights of the
Mogollon Rim furnish
breathtaking views of the
surrounding pine forests
and the desert below – and
the region, known as Rim
Country, also offers plenty
of outdoor activities; hiking
trails, fishing lakes and
more.
A place to start is the Mogollon
Rim Visitor Center, a
log cabin on the south side
of Highway 260 about 32
miles east of Payson, where
the highway meets Rim
Road (FR 300). Perched on
the high escarpment’s edge,
the center – open mainly in
summer, Thursday through
Sunday – has spectacular
views to the south; inside,
there are displays and information
on the area.
One of Rim Country’s
many outdoor activities is
fossil collecting at the Paleo
Site Monument, about
15 miles east of Payson on
Highway 260. The small
fossils that can be found
here are from millions of
years ago, when the area
A view from the Mogollon Rim, northeast of Payson.
– the Horton Creek Trail,
an approximately 6-mile
of the Mogollon Rim, Horton
Creek Trail follows an
old logging road through a
forest of pine, aspen, maple
and fir, climbing more than
1,000 feet as it goes.
Rim Country offers multiple
fishing spots, including
55-acre Woods Canyon
Lake. Stocked regularly
with rainbow trout, the lake
also offers a picnic area,
with campgrounds nearby.
The world’s tallest three-story building
BPOE Building, 155 W. Mesquite, Globe, Arizona
but local lore has it that
Ripley’s Believe It or Not
tallest three-story building.
(Actually, the Guinness
Built by the Benevolent
theater and, currently, an
antique store. Reportedly,
for a brief period in the
2010s, the upper floors
were modified for use in
growing medical marijuana,
but there is no sign of
that activity. Now, the first
floor and the attached addition
are home to an antique
store, but not for long. Recently,
the building was
sold.
