Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: We grabbed lunch at the Schooner at The Lobster House 

for a little mid-week outing. The Schooner is docked on the water right 

alongside the building. It’s one of the multiple eateries that make up 

The Lobster House including the Raw Bar, Coffee Shop, Takeout Shop 

and Fish Market. The views of the Cape May Harbor are breathtaking 

and there’s free dockage to pull your boat up if traveling on the water. 

The vibe: The weather was warm, and the sun was shining. There 

was a nice breeze coming off the harbor which made for a great day to 

eat outside. Seagulls were circling, boats were passing through and 

groups were enjoying crushes at the bar and dockside bites at their 

tables. It was still pretty full considering it was Tuesday in September, 

but there was no wait and we grabbed a table right away. 

The food: Courtney and Krystina started with crab fingers that 

come with a mustard dipping sauce that’s paired perfectly. Definitely 

something you don’t want to skip — we promise you’ll want a generous 

scoop. Krystina also had their spinach salad topped with chopped 

egg, bacon and fresh mushrooms. Courtney and Krystina both enjoyed 

a crabcake sandwich, a staple when visiting the Schooner. It was filling 

and served with fries and topped with lettuce and tomato. Everything 

tasted fresh and you just can’t beat a seafood lunch on the water. 

The takeaway: The Schooner is a great spot to dine outside or enjoy 

a few drinks. Ride your boat over and park along the dock, drive — 

they offer plenty of free parking in their lot, or if you’re up to it, ride a 

bike or take a walk. The Schooner is open seasonally, so you’ll want to 

make plans to go before they close. They’re open daily at 12pm with the 

Schooner serving lunch until 4pm, drinks only from 4-5pm, and then 

appetizers and drinks from 5-close. And yes, they offer kids meals, plus 

a variety of mocktails in addition to their cocktail list, so it’s a great way 

for the whole family to spend a day out, take in the views and watch the 

boats pass by.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

This September marks the 47th year 

of the Cape May Hawk Watch. 

Orchestrated by Cape May Bird 

Observatory in partnership with 

Cape May Point State Park and sponsorship 

from Swarovski Optik. If high-quality, 

high-performance optics are on your wish 

list, add this to your list of candidates. 

When that 25-year-old kid from North 

Jersey inaugurated the count on September 

1, 1976, he was using a Leitz Trinovid 8x40 

backed up with a shoulder stock mounted 

Swift Telemaster spotting scope. We relied on 

plumage-based field marks in those days and 

the extra power offered by the scope was useful 

in determining Accipiter tail shape — at 

the time, the characteristic separating Sharpshinned 

and Cooper’s Hawk. Indeed, in that 

stone knife and bear skin age of hawk identification, 

there were some students of birds 

who insisted that Accipiters could not be 

separated unless in the hand under calipers. 

Happily the naysayers, while strident, 

were also wrong. Today hawk watchers rely 

upon an array of distinguishing traits to separate 

Coops and Sharpies, many of them 

discovered and codified by Cape May hawk 

watchers whose illustrious ranks include the 

great Frank Nicoletti, the late Jerry Liguori 

and David Sibley whose raptor plate in his 

“Sibley Guide to Birds” may still stand as the 

finest raptor cheat sheet on earth. David was 

the first bird artist to accurately depict the 

shapes of flying raptors, an advance in bird 

identification that birding’s Grand Master, 

Roger Tory Peterson was brought to admire. 

And while raptor identification has 

advanced. One thing that has not changed is 

the welcoming spirit and camaraderie on the 

hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State 

Park. There is no admission fee, and the hawk 

watch is conducted dawn to dusk. Best of all, 

you need not worry about getting up with 

the birds. Migrating hawks rely greatly upon 

thermals for lift, so keep banker’s hours. Bring 

binoculars, a cushion if you plan to spend the 

day and high expectations. In September and 

October with northwest winds and limited 

cloud cover expect to see hundreds of hawks 

in a few hours. The one-day record is 21,800 

and this once in a lifetime flight earned Cape 

May the title of “The Raptor Capital of North 

America.” The best thing is many hawks are 

close enough to be viewed without optics. 

And you can count on local veterans to shout 

out the names of any rare and unusual species.

and they excel in assisting new birders.

You can take the vigilante out of 

Boston, but you can’t take the kickass 

out of the vigilante. Isn’t that the 

old saying? Maybe I messed that up a 

little. Let’s take a look at two movies 

that are making an impact. 

Equalizer 3 is kickass! Wait, how do you say 

that in Italian? Fare il culo a qualcuno? Google 

translate helped me there... maybe. The latest 

installment of the Denzel Washington action 

series takes place in Italy. It is a welcome backdrop 

change from Boston, but there’s no slowing 

down on the adrenaline-pumping action. 

I guess he’s trying to keep up with Keanu 

Reeves in John Wick. Not sure Washington 

out-and-out drops hundreds with bullets like 

Reeves, but he gets in his shots! 

While it’s true that storytelling in this 

film is maybe not so innovative, the setting 

and vibe is worth the price of admission. 

Washington seems to have fun as the 

do-gooder gone rogue. The nearly 70-yearold 

Oscar-winning icon is in top form. Okay, 

okay so he’s not jumping off cliffs like Tom

Cruise — but DW’s got 10 years on that “kid.” 

The bottom line is that sometimes a story 

is a simple fight between good versus evil. 

Denzel is the good. Everyone around him? 

Mostly evil. But he drops them, and it is so 

gratifying for us. 

The new streaming release Cinnamon is 

from a surprising studio: Tubi. If you are not 

off the cable TV bandwagon, you may not 

know what Tubi is. It is a channel much like 

Roku (which I’ve mentioned here before) that 

repackages older TV shows and movies to 

present them to people who only can stream 

and don’t have the curation (and outrageous 

cost) of cable television. 

This movie is a hard-driving crime drama 

very much in the vein of Coen Brothers. 

Stylish, bloody, and off the chain, it has comic 

moments and high-energy madness. You 

want the protagonists to beat the odds, but is 

anyone here safe from the crossfire? 

Relative newcomer Hailey Kilgore plays 

the title role beautifully. She is surrounded by 

comedian Damon Wayans and iconic actress 

Pam Grier as well as character actor Dan 

Lauria, best known as the dad in the original 

version of The Wonder Years on ABC.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, don’t throw away your shot to learn about Hamilton! 

When “Hamilton” came out in 

2015, my daughter played the cast 

recording endlessly. It wasn’t long 

before our entire family was snapping 

fingers, and Hamilton-related 

books dominated our Christmas lists that year. 

“Hamilton,” written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, 

based on Ron Chernow’s biography, made history 

cool and sparked an uptick in book sales 

about America’s founding fathers. 

While experts agree that the framework of 

the play is based on facts, the truth, as the show 

says, depends on “who tells your story.” For 

starters, Hamilton’s mother, Rachel Faucette 

Buck, was not actually a prostitute. Her first 

husband made that accusation in a divorce filing, 

and the slur made its way into the first line 

of the hit musical. Because the play sparked 

renewed interest in Hamilton himself, and in the 

other figures in his story, from Maria Reynolds 

to Hercules Mulligan to Angelica Schuyler. The 

“ten dollar founding father,” made many of us 

want to learn more, whether about the complexities 

of colonial divorce law, or the banking 

system of the United States, or representative 

democracy, or effective persuasion. Explore the 

history of medicine and ponder what might have 

saved Hamilton, or his son Philip. Consider the

Ponder Hamilton’s stance on slavery — historians 

agree that Hamilton spoke out against it, and 

he was a member of the Manumission Society, 

but his wife Eliza came from a slave-holding 

family, and enslaved servants probably kept the 

Hamilton house running. “Hamilton” reminds 

us that knowledge, presented in an engaging 

manner, makes us want to know more. 

Dr. Robert P. Watson will discuss Hamilton’s 

life, and the role he played in shaping New 

Jersey, in a lecture titled “Alexander Hamilton: 

The Man, the Myth, the Musical.” Dr. Watson 

is an “award-winning author, professor, historian, 

and analyst who has contributed to The 

New York Times, NPR, The Daily Show with Jon 

Stewart, the BBC, and more.” He has written 40 

books on history and politics, and has served 

as an “on-camera expert for numerous historical 

documentaries” for shows produced in the 

United States and around the world. Dr. Watson 

is a professor of American history at Lynn 

University in Boca Raton, Florida. The lecture, 

part of Cape May MAC’s Lessons of History 

series, is Sunday, October 8 from 5 to 7 pm at 

Cape May Convention Hall. Tickets are $40 per

Wise answers to perplexing questions 

and wait for her to come up for air. Then simply

She’ll listen if only for a little while. True 

friends are rare, so don’t squander your 

relationship. When you get exasperated, take a 

break from her. As for your other friends, that’s 

their problem. Maybe meet for drinks in places 

with music like the Rusty Nail or Ugly Mug.

I met a woman at the gym. I’ve been in a 

relationship for some years now and I’m not 

looking for a new girlfriend, but we hit it off

girl who warms up when given positive 

attention. Cookie is learning leash skills and 

basic behavior cues. She needs a slow introduction 

to dogs and cats but seems to be comfortable 

in their presence. Cookie will be great 

for a family looking for a sweet and loving 

young dog. 

NECCO is a sweet, older boy who came to the 

shelter when his owners could no longer care 

for him. He is a calm boy who enjoys cuddling 

and a leisurely stroll through the yard 

or around the neighborhood. Necco is food 

motivated and loves to show off for a treat. He 

seems to be dog friendly but will need a slow 

introduction. 

ROCKET is an active one-year-old boy who 

was brought to the shelter when his owners 

could no longer keep him. He’s a happy, active 

puppy who loves people. Rocket has good 

leash skills and is learning to use self-control 

behaviors to curb his puppy enthusiasm. He is 

good with children and a slow introduction to 

other dogs and cats would be best for him.

since she was four years old. At first, he was a 

bit moody, but has since become a sweet kitty 

with some bad luck. After her most recent 

owner passed away, he came back to the shelter. 

At 15 years old now, Patch loves his face 

rubbed and doesn’t like other cats, dogs or 

children. This kitty deserves a break. 

VELMA AND ROXIE are a pair of beauties 

who are ready to find their new home. They’re 

playful and sweet — perfect for a family’s first 

pet. Velma and Roxie are up to date on all vaccinations 

and spayed. They would be good in 

a home with other cats, dogs and children. 

These two should be adopted together, so contact 

the shelter if interested. 

CUPCAKE had a home for 10 years with his 

sister before their owner moved and couldn’t 

bring them along. Initially, he and his sister 

were adopted together, but the adopters 

brought him back shortly after claiming he 

wasn’t housebroken. Cupcake uses his litter 

box every time at the shelter with no issues. At 

11 years old, he deserves a loving home.
