Day 1: Fly to Naples
Arrive in Naples and transfer to Castellammare
di Stabia. Stay at Hotel Stabia (or similar) for
7 nights. This restored 19th-century property
affords sweeping views of the Bay of Naples
and Mount Vesuvius. In the evening, enjoy a
welcome dinner. (D)
Day 2: Naples
Visit the monastery-turned-museum of Certosa
di San Martino, then journey by funicular to
Naples’ Pignasecca Market for lunch. This
afternoon, tour the Royal Palace of Naples
and the Piazza del Plebiscito. Then admire the
façade of medieval fortress Castel Nuovo. (B, L)
Day 3: Pompeii & Oplontis
Tour Pompeii, highlights of which include the
basilica, the Temple of Apollo, and the oldest
known Roman amphitheatre. Proceed to
nearby Oplontis, home of the Imperial Villa and
also preserved by volcanic ash. (B)
Day 4: Sorrento
Morning transfer to Sorrento for a day at
leisure to enjoy the plunging coastline,
tumbling towns and fine cuisine. (B)
Day 5: Caserta
Morning visit to the Royal Palace and Gardens
of Caserta, the largest palace in Europe, built
to rival Versailles. After lunch, visit the former
royal silk factory of San Leucio, which once
supplied the courts of Europe with luxurious
fabrics. (B)
Day 6: Herculaneum & Mount Vesuvius
Morning tour of lesser-visited Herculaneum,
including the well-preserved home of a Roman
noble family; the extraordinary mosaic at Casa
di Nettuno e Anfitrite; and the public baths at
Terme del Foro. Enjoy wine tasting and a light
lunch at an estate close to Mount Vesuvius. (B, L)
Day 7: Castellammare di Stabia
Day at leisure. This evening, attend a farewell
dinner in Sorrento. (B, D)
