SÓNIA ANICETOBrussels, Belgium90Sónia Aniceto’s work lies at thecrossroads between painting andtextile art. In a broader approachto painting, she combines appliedcolors, embroidery, mechanicalfree-stitch, and drawing on ‘droppaper,’ a flexible, fibrous materialsimilar to fabric. The result is a threedimensionalweave. The delicacyof the drawing, the resilience of thepaper, its transparencies, thicknesses,suppleness, and tensions create aworld of intimacy, full of strength as wellas fragility. Her work is multi-faceted,drawing on narrative pieces, overlaps,and interlocking scenes. Her approachis certainly intriguing: a kaleidoscopeof stories and sensations that combineto form a whole, an identity. Sóniaoscillates between innocence andadulthood, between freedom andrestraint in these enigmatic spaces ofhers, and in an ambivalent “surreality”that is not constrained by logic. Shelikes to disrupt spatial and temporalreference points. The reference to thebody is omnipresent, a fragmentary,almost lacking body of which she offersa partial vision, so fragmented thatit becomes imaginary, like a vaguememory. A kind of inevitable evolutiontowards abstraction begins, like anendless landscape, more atmosphericthan figurative. In her recent works,Sónia explores the notion of territory.Shared, conquered, marked, known,experienced, crossed, recognized,appropriated, moved, familiar... somany ways of inhabiting the world thattransforms the human being. These“landscapes” are like a journey throughfantasized places and geographiestinged with affect. They invite usto multiply worlds in order to makeours more welcoming. Alongside herworks on canvas and paper, Sóniais also developing an installationpractice. “TEIA” is a polymorphous,collaborative, in situ textile work inprogress. It is a project that is beingrenewed, transformed, transited, andevolving since 2017.
