As an artist, she seeksperfection but finds true beauty in theimperfections brought about by chance,nature, and human interaction. Herwork explores themes of abandonment,betrayal, disconnection, judgment,misrepresentation, and loss, depictingthe accompanying feelings of fear,sadness, revulsion, anger, forgiveness,and understanding through sculpturalforms.Throughout Kristina’s artwork, thereis often a focus on the human form,particularly women’s bodies, and theinternal and external influences thatshape them. The biomorphic qualitiesof her art establish a connectionwith the viewer and evoke emotionalresponses. The repetition of formsfound in many of her pieces serves asa reminder of the universality of humanexperiences. She aims to challengeviewers to seek understanding andfind beauty in the moments that defineour humanity, fostering profoundempathy for one another. In her art,Kristina employs fiber techniqueswhile incorporating other materialssuch as manufactured textiles, thread,glass, metal, and plastic. This choiceof medium reinforces her themes andemphasizes the tactile and visceralqualities of her work. Reflectingthe themes of connectedness andexperience central to her art, eachpiece becomes an integral part of itsenvironment, inviting the viewer intothe shared experience.The inspiration for this series stemsfrom the notion that we are allinterconnected, both literally andfiguratively. Through portraiture of thenavel, which represents our physicalconnection to our mothers as well asthe process of becoming our individualselves, Kristina explores the similaritiesand differences in our connections.While everyone possesses abellybutton, each one is unique,shaped by spontaneous actions,thoughtful decisions, gravity, and thepassage of time.Regarding “When We Are They AreUs”:In this work, women of various agescontributed to the creation of eachstrand, using a variety of materials tosymbolize a woman’s fertility. Thesestrands were made by teenagers,young women, middle-aged mothers,and grandmothers who dedicatedtheir time, effort, and thoughts abouttheir bodies and choices. Crochetwas chosen as the fiber technique forthis piece due to its universal natureand ability to connect women acrossgenerations. Just as many peopleknow someone who has crocheted,they also know someone who hasfaced challenging choices related totheir reproductive capacity.Regarding “(Dis)Connection”:The navel, serving as both aconnection and disconnection,embodies another duality. Positioned inone of the most vulnerable areas of ourbodies, the bellybutton carries intimacywithout the overt sexual connotationsassociated with genitalia. Whetherand how one chooses to reveal theirnavel greatly depends on socio-culturalnorms, the company they keep, theirage, and their self-perception. Whileexposing our “soft underbelly” can beprovocative, it can also evoke fear,offense, ordinariness, or playfulness.
