Airsoft Action - October 2023

Even though we're currently having our annual vacation and office shutdown, here we go with the the very latest issue of AIRSOFT ACTION, and as usual it's a bit of a beast with 100 PAGES of free-to-read news, reviews, event reports from around the globe, and a healthy dose of attitude and airsoft opinion! Kicking off with our headline review this month Bill gets some serious rangetime in with the KING ARMS TWS 9MM SBR, an AR GBBR that actually uses G-SERIES magazine many of you probably already have for your handguns... why are more people not talking about this breakthrough gas model... we have no idea, but we'll certainly say our piece! Following on from there we have a first look at the all-new SGR 556 from G&G, the just-released ICS CXP APE SE,and the newest BATTLE ARMS DEVELOPMENT SBR AEG (courtesy of Larri in his first-ever AEG review!) from our old mates at REDWOLF! Then there's a further FIFTEEN SMG models that are moving on through the RED CELL testing program, along with a recap on the ROSSI NEPTUNE SAS six-months in! In terms of kit Bill reflects back on the clothing and gear that he used on the FAST TACTICAL training course he attended recently, and the good folk of the AA LEGION "GO GREEN FTW!" And then... THEN... we have our annual report from the AA crew that attended the NATIONAL AIRSOFT FESTIVAL in the UK, a BIG game report from Portugal thanks to Miguel, and our power-duo of Stewbacca and Anny firstly get "Inside LCT" for an update, and secondly bring in the lowdown on the DING DING CUP Steel Challenge in Taiwan, an event that AIRSOFT ACTION was honoured to support! So, you want more gear, more guns, more news, and more airsoft? You'll find a bit of everything airsoft in this issue, so kick back and get stuck in!

ARMOURY
G&G SGR 556 AEG
THEIR way and they take their time, and although
they’ve had (like every manufacturer out there I might
add) some stumbles along the way, their story overall
has been one of resounding success. Once again the
echo-chamber that is social media would have us
believe that the small problems that G&G have had
over many years of creating some excellent AEGs and
GBBs are larger than they are in reality… perhaps I’m
just lucky, maybe my maintenance routine is more
scrupulous, and maybe I love all my RIFs just a bit too
much, but to date, and over many models I’ve never
had a G&G AEG fail catastrophically… and that can’t
be said for every manufacturer whose AEGs I have
tested!
Last month I wrote about the FAR 556, and what a
development that is! A folding AR, who’d have thunk
it? But it works, and so far at least it works very well
indeed… if that’s not innovation I don’t know what
is, and G&G continue to have this process of constant
development baked-in, and I’m eagerly awaiting their
first GBB AR platform as I believe it will be something
just a little bit special…
However, as usual I digress… with no apology
whatsoever!
ELEGANT AND REFINED
What’s important right now is the SGR, that AR AEG
that I’ve waited for somewhat less than patiently,
and yes, it is ANOTHER AR! Let’s not forget that G&G
always offer platforms other than the AR (their new
MP5-alike looks fabulous!), but as for pretty much all
manufacturers, the AR is still the undisputed “King of
Airsoft”, and that’s where the volume sales to we, the
players, still resides. It therefore makes total sense to
me that this is the platform they have chosen to make
the most of all their latest advances, and I’ll tell you
straight of, the SGR is a real piece of ARt-work.
Starting on the outside, once again the SGR is
certainly an elegant and refined looking AEG, and
the lines are,
to me at least, 100% G&G; this is another
thing I like about them, that they are among
a few manufacturers who shun the easy fix
of the “real steel” world to a degree and
concentrate on their own unique designs; yes,
they’ve made some excellent “mil-style ARs”
with licences in place, and they’ve worked with
some big names in the “civilian AR” world too,
but like those civilian firearms designers they’ve
never been afraid to go their own way.
So, starting at the back-end for once,
straight away there’s the GOS-V8 sliding
stock (jeez, I’m sounding like a stock junky
this issue!), a design that I love, one that’s
ergonomic and comfortable, and one that
also allows easy fitment and replacement
of even larger batteries. Moving forward
there’s a singelpoint sling plate fitted as
standard, which is in addition to the perfectly
placed QD stud point on the stock itself. The motor
grip is G&G’s own, a nice design that nods to “MPstyle”,
and the upper and lower receivers are beyond
doubt G&G, the upper benefitting from a slick
modern design with a “butterfly” charging handle,
and the lower featuring fully ambidextrous controls, a
flared magwell, oversized trigger guard, and an easyto-operate
oversized magazine release on the right.
The top rail is absolutely contiguous to that of the
M-LOK rail system, which again incorporates QD stud
points both L/R which will marry up harmoniously
with those on the stock if you like to run a two-point
sling; there are also flip-up sights front and rear,
G&G’s own which personally I believe are some of the
nicest around! At the business-end you get one of
G&Gs distinctive muzzle brakes, and then… then…
there’s the hop adjuster set into the gas block!
Yup, this is another front-end-adjuster, no need to
open the dust cover for hop-adjustment! G&G have
“THE AR IS STILL THE UNDISPUTED “KING OF AIRSOFT”, AND THAT’S WHERE THE
VOLUME SALES TO WE, THE PLAYERS, STILL RESIDES. IT THEREFORE MAKES TOTAL
SENSE TO ME THAT THIS IS THE PLATFORM THEY HAVE CHOSEN TO MAKE THE MOST
OF ALL THEIR LATEST ADVANCES, AND I’LL TELL YOU STRAIGHT OF, THE SGR IS A
REAL PIECE OF ART-WORK.”
