painted buffalo robe showing his major war deeds as a gift from Mato-Tope. 14

Due to the fact that Catlin’s robe no longer exists and that the origin of another

robe, possibly painted by Mato-Tope and lodged in the Swiss Historical Museum

in Bern, is uncertain, the buffalo robe at the Linden-Museum Stuttgart is the only

pictorial document that stems without doubt from the hand of the Mandan chief.

Mato-Tope also painted his fight with the Cheyenne on paper, using Bodmer’s

watercolors. 15 This image was incorporated in the travelwork as Tableau 22, titled

„Fac-Simile of an Indian painting.”
