Die Forschungsreise des Prinzen Maximilian zu Wied an den
oberen Missouri (1832 – 1834) war ein Höhepunkt in der Begegnung
Europas mit Nordamerika. Die Illustrationen, die Karl Bodmer
für den Reisebericht des Prinzen schuf, sind Meisterwerke in der
Darstellung des Halbkontinents und seiner Ureinwohner. Zum
zweihundertsten Geburtstag des Zürcher Künstlers zeigt das
Nordamerika Native Museum in Zürich die gesamte Serie und
unternimmt einen Versuch, sie kulturgeschichtlich einzuordnen.
Prince Maximilian of Wied’s scientific expedition to the Upper
Missouri (1832– 1834) was a highlight in the encounter between
Europe and the New World. The illustrations that Karl Bodmer
created for the Prince’s travel journal rank as masterpieces
in the representation of the North American continent and its
indigenous peoples. On the occasion of the Zurich artist’s 200th
anniversary the North America Native Museum is showing the
complete series and attempts to classify his work in cultural
historical terms.
