merely that Bodmer’s art, Wied’s research, and Humboldt’s reflections are salient
phenomena in a coherent network of relations, and that one can therefore “read”
and understand not only the untheoretical Wied through the programmatic
Humboldt, but in fact the entire project of the Travels, Bodmer’s contribution to
it prominently included.
2. Unity
Knowledge and pleasure (“Genuss”) come together, in Humboldt’s view, in
the recognition of the unity and order of the object of interest. One of the questions
posed by the “Introductory Reflections” in Kosmos is, “how the enjoyment
[“Genuss”], variegated in its inner sources, can be increased by clear insight in the
connections among phenomena and in the harmony of the animating forces.” 15
