Editor's Note
September brings in all the feels, right? Spring, possibility, new beginnings and
all those wondrous things.
And so this might be the best time to launch our latest project - BUILD School.
It has taken some prep work, planning, pivoting and of course doubting, but
here we are ready to launch. BUILD School is a virtual business school that
offers a 3 month course and soon we’ll be adding all kinds of other courses as
we go along. It is completely online and since it is pre-recorded you can view it
when you are able to. You will also receive PDF format notes emailed to you to
supplement the lesson. There will be some course work to help you apply what
you learnt for that work, but nothing serious! Read more about it in this issue.
We hosted the BUILD Marketing for Your Small Business Workshop in July and
had an incredible time learning together. Gerda Bouwer of Oak Law dropped
in for a few minutes to talk about how important protecting the intellectual
property of your brand is. All in all an incredibly insightful morning spent with
remarkable women business owners.
One of our featured article writers, Maylene Seah of Studio Noor Anisa,
hosted a FREE Brand Brilliance webinar on 29 August 2023 and the turnout
was amazing. Maylene shared her expertise and encouraged us to participate
in a visualisation exercise to help us unearth the true essence of our brands.
Keep a lookout for future webinar events - building a strong community is all
about sharing our ideas and knowledge.
Our first 4 month business accelerator came to a bitter-sweet end. We had all
forged amazing relationships over this time, but the ladies take their learnings
and move on, and BUILD will be welcoming a new cohort soon. Exciting times!
Our small business feature is beyond amazing! Innovation and disruption on
another level! Happy reading!
I Screen, You
Screen, We ALL
Screen
Screen Time & Childhood Development
Salma Sarang is a qualified Speech Therapist and Audiologist with over 10 years of experience in her field.
As a student, she was invited to join the Golden Key Society for academic achievement. She is a Clinical
Supervisor at the University of the Witwatersrand where she teaches and examines second and third year
students in both Speech Pathology and Audiology. Currently, Salma is working privately where she is
reawakening her passion for early intervention.
The issue of screen time for children is
unique to today’s parents. Our parents
did not have to grapple with the
questions and challenges that come with
our increasing reliance on technology
(and therefore screens) in our daily lives.
In fact, screen time is probably one of the
most polarising topics in parenting. But
screens are definitely here to stay and
while I don’t have all the answers
(because I’m pretty sure no parent does!),
I would like to guide you through some of
the confusion.
So let’s start off with the most common
question parents have, is screen time
really that bad? Well…yes and no.
Perhaps an answer closest to the truth is
that it depends. Consider that you are
currently using a screen to access this
information and so therefore all screens
cannot be inherently “bad”.
I won’t go into the mountains of ongoing
research, but let’s look at how we as
parents can implement some screen time
rules.
The following are research based
guidelines from the American Academy
of Paediatrics:
18 months - no digital media apart
from video chatting
18-24 months - for those wishing to
introduce media, choose highquality
content and engage along
side the child
2 years+ - limit to one hour a day of
high-quality content with coviewing
when possible
No screens at any age during meals
or one hour before bedtime
While it is difficult to say conclusively
screen time causes delays in childhood
development, there is some correlation.
But this may depends on so many
factors, including the child’s age, time
spent using a screen, parental
involvement and the type of content
being viewed.
B U I L D I D E A S | 4

These guidelines are time based but this
should not be the only factor that guides
screen usage for children. Let’s look at some of
the other factors to keep in mind.
I think it’s safe to say that all content isn’t
created equal. There is a lot of great
content out there that can be
educational, fun and beneficial. So how
do we go about choosing such content?
The first thing to consider is the pace and
how busy the content is. Does the
frame/camera angle change often. This can
be hyper stimulating for children and has
been shown to be linked to some attention
difficulties in later years. Furthermore,
many apps use persuasive design such as
immediate rewards, bright colours, vibrant
visuals and even pop-ups to keep children
coming back for more, to the point where
they may become “addicted” to that
specific app.
Content should not be violent or
disturbing in any way. This will be largely
dependent on the caregivers’ own beliefs
and values. If you see behaviours in your
child which don’t align to your values,
perhaps its time to review some of the
content your child is engaging with.
Pay attention to your child when they do
have screen time. They should be
engaging with the content and not
simply zoning out. First prize would be if
you child is actually learning from the
content they are engaging with.
When possible, sit with them during
their screen time so that you can help
them engage and make sense of the
content by talking about and making
connections to real-world
experiences. Remember, screen time
can never and should never replace
real- world learning and social
interactions.
We as parents need to be aware of
our own screen usage. Are we using it
just for the necessities or is it
distracting us from interacting with
our kids and creating opportunities
for learning and social development?
This can be a hard question for us as
parents but self reflection on our
own habits is very necessary.
Finally, and most importantly, is that
parents need to determine what
works best for their families. There
may be a lot of information shared
here but at the end of the day, we
each need to decide how best we can
incorporate technology and media
into or daily lives. This may change
monthly (or even weekly or daily)
and that’s ok, you make the rules
based on what’s best for your family.
Hopefully this has been useful in guiding you towards making
screen time entertaining and valuable. Perhaps the take home
message and the answer to the earlier question of whether screens
are bad is that, no, screens are not bad or toxic but how we use
and interact with them, has the potential to be.
SMALL
BUSINESS
feature
BUILD Ideas is incredibly honoured to be able to share this month’s
Small Business Feature - and you will not believe the level of
innovation this phenomenal businesswoman has attained.
Chantelle de Bryun is the founder of Buttercup Farmhouse.
And....wait for it...she makes coffee...out of Butternut!
What is Buttercup Farmhouse? Tell us about your incredibly innovative
product.
Buttercup Farmhouse is a Food and Beverage outlet specializing in Premium Organic
Vegetable Coffee made from the actual veggies that we plant, mainly the Butternut
vegetable. There is a scientific and trade mark process that the product undergoes
today ever since it has gone through the Product development phase, this was to
better the formulation, taste, feel and aroma of the product.
B U I L D I D E A S | 7

How did BF come to be? What inspired you to create this and
was this a problem you identified that needed to be solved?
Ohhh! I can never get tired of sharing this story, each time I do, something new
pops up as a reminder. I am firstly a small scale farmer, specializing in Crop
Production and later ventured into Product Development as an innovator. My
family is big on Coffee and Pumpkin/Butternut and my Grandfather is the OG
of coffee, I grew up with my Grandfather, and all the fond memories I have of him
was him forever having a cup of coffee in his hand from morning till evening. He
later fell ill in the year 2019 and he was diagnosed with liver kidney infection which
was due to all the caffeine he has been consuming for the past 60 years. I then, as
an innovator used my Grandfather as a “calculated risk” to make him
something he loved, which was the coffee he was not allowed and infuse it with a
bit of pure raw pumpkin on the side. These two ingredients did not make sense as
a meal at first, but he kept asking for more. Later in the year 2020, the doctors
realized and noticed that there was a difference in his health check report that
contributed positively to his health. From that day onward, I knew that there
was something special here. If I could help contribute to my Grandfathers
health, what more of others suffering from other Health Chronic Diseases.
Today we have a product that caters for both coffee lovers and people who are
immune to caffeine.
Who is Chantelle outside of Buttercup Farmhouse?
Chantelle is a lover of life, pursuing her purpose on a daily basis and a people’s
person. I have only recent discovered that I am also very reserved but would not
mind a good time with people sharing like-minded ideas and growth
opportunities. I am also a book reader, I love learning and love getting to know
what Innovators of the past have over come challenges in the Product
Development field. I am also a mother of one beautiful daughter and love being
in my own quiet space whenever possible.
SMALL BUSINESSfeature
Share one of the most triumphant moments in your business
journey.
Our Business has recently been listed through the Food Lovers Market Holdings Group
and being awarded and recognized to export our products to Europe and the UK in the
next year. We are working hard behind the scenes to see all come to fruition. One heart
touching moment I will never forget were the testimonies we have received thus far from
people who have had our product (the coffee) and shared their testimonies on how it has
contributed to their chronic diagnose, one way or the other.
B U I L D I D E A S | 8

Share with us something in your business model that didn’t
work, that you needed to pivot. Did you yield a better result?
Our Target Market, we had initially thought that we had to target one or two
specific market to keep the business afloat. But it turned out not so great, I had
to constantly revise back and forth with my Mentor on what would work best
for us a business that is bringing a new product to the market, it was also very
difficult at first to get the message across, because not everyone is familiar
with fairly new products, we had to work twice as hard to prove that our
product is a good fit.
Did you have any unsuccessful business ventures prior to BF?
Yes, Buttercup Farmhouse is my 6th running venture, the previous 5 have been
spectacular failures that has led me to a transformative business and including all
my lessons learnt in my current venture, it is still an ongoing journey and we are still
learning.
What, in your opinion is something that is often over-looked as a
small business but that you have learnt is really important to pay
attention to, for the success of your business?
SMALL BUSINESSfeature
One thing we should never take for granted or over look is selecting a team of
workers you want to grow with or help establish a business. Not everyone truly
shares your vision, especially if you have founded the idea. It is very important to
take your time and make real hard decisions when selecting people to walk the
journey with you. Your motive should also be very clear to your team mates, or
else you may be misunderstood and loose really good people too.
It is very important to
take your time and
make real hard
decisions when
selecting people to
walk the journey with
you.
SEPTEMBER IS
Childhood Cancer Awareness
By Ahmed Kajee
September marks International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and
non-profit organisation Cupcakes of Hope (COH) is actively getting the
South African community involved in its mission to raise funds for children’s
medical expenses and day-to-day needs.
From food, nappies, and transportation expenses to medical necessities like
wheelchairs and prosthetics, requests for assistance have quadrupled since
2020 - this is according to founder Sandy Cipriano.
In 2022, COH managed to address 2,749 financial needs and gifted 2,660
care bags to young patients in 20 South African hospitals.
This September, they're rallying South Africans to host a "Party of HOPE" or
join its National Cupcake Day initiative on 30 September and raise funds
from cupcakes sold.
We spoke to Cipriano about the initiative and her motivation behind
starting Cupcake of Hope.
B U I L D I D E A S | 1 2

Hi, Sandy, thanks for your time today. Take us through exactly what
inspired you to start Cupcake of Hope
“So cupcakes of hope is a nonprofit organisation. And unfortunately years
ago, a close friend of ours lost her little two year old daughter to cancer.
Kiayara was literally diagnosed with neuroblastoma (A cancer that starts in
early nerve cells (called neuroblasts) of the sympathetic nervous system -
commonly in the glands. This cancer mostly affects children under five
years old) and unfortunately, the journey that the family went through, it
was so heartbreaking to see and God just put it on my heart to help other
families in similar situations.”
18-month old Keegan was the first patient that Cipriano assisted. A
fundraiser she hosted raised R5,000.00 - a figure which had disappointed
her. Keegan had tumours on his spine and sadly became paralysed with
doctors predicting that he wouldn't reach his 2nd birthday.
“I'm very pleased to say that last year, we celebrated Keegan's 15th
birthday. And to me, it's a beautiful story of hope. I share the story often
with newly diagnosed families, just to tell them that you know what, no
matter what miracles happen every single day, so never, ever lose hope.”
Cirpriano reflected on Keegan’s story.
Assistance for Keegan came in the form of a special car seat and specialised
mattresses to prevent bedsores.
“So all in all, it was R4000,00, and then we still have an extra R1,000.00
which we settled an outstanding bill and then got nappies and clothing for
him. And I think that was one of my first lessons that no matter how much
you raise, it does make a meaningful difference in a family's life. And yes,
that was back in 2011.”
Following this, Cipriano registered Cupcakes of Hope as a non-profit
organisation to help raise funds for children with cancer.
B U I L D I D E A S | 1 3

That must have been exciting, but it is perhaps a very sad journey that you
have to go through - seeing the difficulties that many of the patients go
through?
“Well, it's never easy, first of all, for a parent to hear that news that your child
has been diagnosed with cancer, it is most probably the most heartbreaking
news that any parent can get. But we are Cupcakes Of Hope. We help the
families financially to alleviate the burden that they have. And I believe that all
parents should focus at this time on the well-being of the child.”
Alongside the challenges, there were also challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic
which Cipriano needed to overcome.
It is very challenging for us when we get a newly diagnosed family register on
our books. We are obviously trying to assist them financially, but also
emotionally and through the years especially or before COVID we were
averaging about 50 to 70 families every single month. But now we've
quadrupled the last month cupcakes for her financially assisted 241 children, and
the youngest is only a two month old baby from Cape Town. So it's very
heartbreaking.”
With these experiences, Cipriano will be doing activities across the country on
30 September to sell cupcakes, get people to participate in a bake-a-thon to
help raise funds for children living with cancer.
“We're going to be in more than 60 malls all across the country. And no matter if
you're a hobby baker or professional baker or just love to play around in the
kitchen, we need your skill. So please bake 24 cupcakes, you can visit our
website www.cupcakesofhope.org
Go and have a look where the different malls are the nearest one in your
area, and then propose a mall to bake at, and we will then take your pitch
down and organise a time and location for you to deliver them on.”
If one is not available on the 30th of September, there are different ways that
South Africans can support this cause. Cipriano says this can be done by hosting
a pop-up fundraiser at one’s workplace, a school or at places of worship.
5
Reasons
To Visit Namibia
In our quest to feature incredible African
countries to visit, this month we find
ourselves marveling over Namibia. - A
Hidden Gem in Africa
Namibia, often referred to as the "Land
of the Brave," is a captivating country
located in southwestern Africa that
boasts a unique blend of natural beauty,
diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage.
While Namibia may not be the first
destination that comes to mind when
planning a trip, it offers a one-of-a-kind
experience that should not be missed.
Here are five compelling reasons why
you should consider visiting Namibia.
1. BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES:
Namibia is renowned for its stunning and
diverse landscapes. From the
otherworldly dunes of the Namib Desert
to the rugged mountains of Damaraland
and the vast Etosha Pan, the country is a
photographer's dream.
The towering red sand dunes of
Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert are
particularly iconic and are best
experienced at sunrise or sunset when
the light paints the landscape with a
kaleidoscope of colors. Namibia's
landscape is like no other, offering
endless opportunities for exploration and
adventure.
2. THRILLING WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS:
Namibia is home to a remarkable array of
wildlife, making it a top destination for
safari enthusiasts. The Etosha National
Park, one of Africa's largest game
reserves, is a haven for wildlife lovers.
Here, you can spot elephants, lions,
zebras, and an abundance of other
animals congregating around the park's
waterholes. The chance to witness these
majestic creatures in their natural
habitat is an unforgettable experience
that few other places can rival.
B U I L D I D E A S | 1 5

3. RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE:
Namibia is a culturally diverse nation with
a rich history, and visiting local
communities is a great way to gain
insight into the country's heritage. The
Himba people, known for their distinctive
red ochre-covered skin and intricate
hairstyles, offer a unique cultural
experience. Engaging with local
communities and learning about their
traditions, music, and art is a chance to
connect with Namibia on a deeper level.
4. ADVENTURE AWAITS:
For thrill-seekers and outdoor
enthusiasts, Namibia offers a playground
of activities. Whether it's quad biking
through the dunes of Swakopmund,
hiking in the dramatic Fish River Canyon,
or taking a hot air balloon ride over the
mesmerizing landscapes, there is no
shortage of adventures to embark upon.
The country's rugged terrain provides
opportunities for hiking, rock climbing,
and off-road driving.
5. STARGAZING PARADISE:
Namibia is renowned for its clear,
unpolluted skies, making it one of the
best places on Earth for stargazing. The
NamibRand Nature Reserve, designated
as an International Dark Sky Reserve,
offers exceptional views of the night sky.
Camp under the stars or visit the
observatory to witness the Milky Way
and constellations in all their glory.
In conclusion, Namibia is a hidden gem in
southern Africa that beckons travelers
with its unique landscapes, abundant
wildlife, rich culture, adventure
opportunities, and unparalleled
stargazing experiences. Whether you're
seeking natural beauty, cultural
enrichment, or thrilling adventures,
Namibia has it all. So, if you're looking for
a destination that promises
unforgettable memories and a deep
connection with nature and culture,
Namibia should be at the top of your
travel list. It's a destination that will leave
you in awe of the wonders of our planet.
let’s get you a
Strategy
marketing
In our third BUILD Workshop we discussed
the importance of a Marketing Strategy.
The starting point with any business - or
anything really - is, what is the goal? Where
do you want to get to? If you know what
this looks like for you, you start making
decisions based on getting you to that goal.
If you already know that you want to grow
your coffee store to a point of having a few
stores in various locations throughout the
country, you are already going to start
laying the foundation for that growth.
A marketing strategy without a goal will be
absolutely aimless. So step one before you
even dive into a Marketing Strategy - what
do you want for your business? What is the
ideal destination for what you are building?
Got it? Great, now you can start creating
your path to get there.
It may seem very “out there” but your
business goal will be tied to every single
social media post you will do.
BUILD YOUR BUYER PERSONA:
Know intricately well who you are
marketing to. You need to have in your
mind an idea of who exactly your ideal
client is. This means that all your content
and marketing efforts will be directed to
this person. Give this person a name, a
little story about where they stay, work
and what they enjoy doing. Creating this
BUYER PERSONA is an excellent exercise
to narrow down your target market. You
will also now be able to determine with
greater certainty where you will be able to
find them.
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS GOAL?
Are you increasing your profit, expanding
your market, introducing new products?
What Marketing Strategy meets this
objective best?
KNOW YOUR COMPETITION:
Analyze your competitors to identify gaps
and opportunities. What sets you apart?
Use this information to develop your
unique selling proposition.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CHANNELS:
Select the marketing channels that align with your audience and goals. This may include
social media, email marketing, content marketing, SEO, or paid advertising.
CREATE A CONTENT PLAN:
Develop valuable and relevant content that resonates with your audience. Consistency is
key. And remember your content must speak to your BUYER PERSONA that you created. In
your Marketing Strategy you are going to look at what kind of tools, resources and
platforms you will choose to drive your business objective. When you design your
MARKETING PLAN you will get into the details of what activities you will do. You will have a
Social Media Marketing Plan that will form a part of it.
ALLOCATE RESOURCES:
Determine your budget and assign resources effectively. Consider outsourcing or hiring
experts when necessary. Having a certain budget set aside for marketing is extremely
important. Don’t look at it as an expense, look at it as a return on investment. Often we need
to spend money to get more revenue - so you need to start looking at it as a return on this
investment
MEASURE AND ADJUST:
Implement analytics tools to track your progress. Regularly review your strategy and make
adjustments based on performance data.
Incorporating these steps into your marketing strategy will help you reach and engage your
target audience effectively, ultimately driving business growth and success.
On Our Bookshelf
What we're reading
A Painted House
John Grisham
A little different from the usual Grisham legal drama
content, A Painted House is a slower story told through the
perspective of Luke Chandler.
Luke is a seven year old boy living in Arkansas in the US. An
honest boy, who always speaks the truth - Luke’s world is
suddenly turned upside down when migrant workers work
on the Chandler cotton farm.
This book has a “To Kill A Mockingbird” feel about it and I would venture to say that it
was an equally good read. John Grisham is craftsman, he has over 40 best-sellers and
this work is testament to his incredible skill.
The Personal MBA
Josh Kaufman
I love the story of how Josh got started into the world of
Personal MBA. Josh believes that obtaining an MBA from a
socially accepted institution is somewhat elitist. He has a
website that has a collection of books and articles that
anyone can get their hand on and create their own custommade
“MBA education”. His writing is easy to understand
and the advice is so practical. Enjoying this at the moment.
What my Kids are Reading....
Not sure if this is an occurrence in every home, but if I can't
find my kids, the most likely probability is that they're stuck
in a book! Two of my kids are avid readers and one needs to
be coaxed. Here's what they're reading and enjoying...
The Naughtiest Girl
Enid Blyton
We are back to Enid Blyton books this month it seems. My
youngest has read a few of the Naughtiest Girl books and
just recently found a few more tucked away in her school
library. Enid Blyton is always a hit with the young crowd.
This book is particularly entertaining because the
protagonist has decided she will do everything she can to
be the naughtiest girl in school!
Rooftoppers
Katherine Rendell
Similar to a David Walliams style of book, my daughter
relished this book. It is a whimsical story of a girl named
Sophie who finds herself hopping from rooftop to rooftop
in Paris.
It is a wonderfully inspiring story that leaves you rooting
for Sophie and the hope of what may still be possible.
Stardust Stables
Sable Hamilton
One thing about our home, we are either talking about
horses, riding them, watching them or reading about them.
I have 3 horse crazy girls who are always looking for
“horsey” books. Stardust series of books tells the story of
young horse riders who perform stunts. Suitable for a
slightly older reader - 13 to 16
