Back to School for Seniors! Going back to school as a senior citizen is a great idea due to increased free time and a passion to learn. Did you know that adults who go back to school experience an increased life span? The life expectancy for men who get a bachelor’s degree is over 12 years higher, while women’s is over ten times higher. Even better, they experience a positive impact on their physical and mental health. Going back to school can be one of the most rewarding times in a person’s life. Whether you are looking for new opportunities or wish to obtain additional knowledge, there are many reasons why someone might want to consider going back to school at any age. The benefits of doing so as a senior citizen are even more. Fall is the perfect time for seniors who love lifelong learning to try something new. Socialization and Satisfaction One of the most rewarding aspects of going back to school is that every day presents a new opportunity to socialize with students and faculty. Seniors can bond with youthful people while at the same time receiving a new network of friends, classmates, and acquaintances. This new experience provides them with a sense of belonging and a new group of people they can call on for help throughout the years ahead. Now, you may choose to study something that piqued your interest or do so because it’s a requirement for a job. Regardless, going back to school benefits you as a senior citizen by giving you a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment. You feel as though you’re not only interested in learning more about the world around you but also capable of doing so. You Gain New Hobbies and Learn New Skills Going back to school is a great way to explore something new for seniors who have spent decades learning about a particular topic but have since retired or stopped working. It could be anything from art classes to science courses, depending on what you enjoy doing. Whether it’s writing, painting, or cooking, there are many schools out there willing to provide seniors with the opportunity to explore these hobbies. At the same time, you also learn vital lessons and get to have fun along the way. Apart from gaining new hobbies, you also gain new skills. Some seniors may find themselves in a financial situation where they need to find a way to earn more money. Going back to school opens them to learn new skills to help them obtain a job with better pay. You could also open your own business that allows you to work and stay engaged in your retirement years. Going back to school has become a popular option among senior citizens everywhere. If you’re looking for ways to get involved in your community while also staying sharp, attending classes online or at your local college or university is the right choice for you. You stand to gain so much when you start school again. Grampa’s Joke My Favourite Animal Our teacher asked what my favourite animal was, and I said, “Fried chicken.” She said I wasn’t funny, but she couldn’t have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favourite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef. Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal’s office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again. The next day in class my teacher asked me what my favourite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal’s office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again. I don’t understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn’t like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most.
