Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: We’re talking not much about a meal this week, but the
sweet treat that followed dinner this weekend. We’ve finally made it
to King’s Ice Cream Parlour, the new spot on Lafayette Street across
from Rotary Park. Mickey and Kate Chew, also the owners of Big Wave
Burrito and Aloha Smoothie Company, opened their ice cream shop in
early August and it was surely worth the wait.
The vibe: The wait in line that is. We visited on Sunday of Labor Day
Weekend and the line stretched pretty far out into the parking lot. Once
we made it inside, we found a few tables inside and out, plus there’s a
very cute toy shop you travel through on your way to the counter. Specialty
candies, books, knick knacks and children’s toys fill the shelves
and they all bring a small touch of nostalgia to the experience. It truly
feels like an old ice cream parlour, just with a few modern updates.
Mickey and Kate’s mission is for everyone to step back in time to feel
like a kid again and we definitely did.
The flavors: King’s offers options for everyone, from sundaes and
cones, to special swirls with custom toppings — including cereal. You
can choose your flavor of ice cream and they’ll mix it with Apple Jacks,
Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, and whatever other cereal
they have available. Their list of ice cream flavors is also worth a few
samples — they’ve got classics like butter pecan and mint chocolate
chip but check out the honey lavender or vegan options!
The treats: Ice cream is our favorite, so we had a difficult time
choosing. Dan went for a King’s swirl with vanilla ice cream, Apple
Jacks and Cinnamon Toast Crunch with a caramel drizzle. Nicole went
big and had a waffle and ice cream with peanut butter ripple, their
homemade whipped cream, chocolate drizzle and a cherry. Portions
were great a perfect way to end a weekend.
The takeaway: King’s brings something different to the Cape May
ice cream scene and is worth a try with the entire family! They’re open
daily from 3-10pm and a short walk from the center of Cape May.

Chef Carl Messick has taken over what was once
Godmother’s and transformed it into a relaxed, finedining
restaurant. Exquisite dishes featuring seasonal
and sustainable ingredients.
A locals’ favorite for a reason. There’s a Key West vibe,
good food, regular entertainment, and the views are
spectacular.
A little slice of paradise on the bay, enjoy dishes
with Caribbean flair, listen to a few jam bands and
watch spectacular sunsets while sipping a cocktail or
domestic draft.
This year brings new ownership to the beachfront
restaurant and bar. Rooftop dining, live music, fresh
local seafood and signature orange crushes — the
fun awaits!
Just steps from the Washington Street Mall, Iccara
Italian Bistro & Seafood brings you the fresh flavors of
Italy in a charming, welcoming atmosphere.
A Jersey Shore classic serving brunch and dinner.
Visit their full bar mixing up specialty Jersey-themed
cocktails, craft beer, and much more. Enjoy indoor
and outdoor dining with an expanded patio.
Offering fresh seafood and a variety of burgers,
sandwiches, salads and apps. Make sure to grab a
stool upstairs overlooking Surfside Pier and enjoy
local craft beer and signature cocktails.
Take-out, fish market, restaurant, raw bar, breakfast,
dinner... The Lobster House has it all. Drinks on the
Schooner American before dinner is a must-do Cape
May experience.
Enjoy wicked waterfront sunset views, delicacies from
land and sea, handcrafted cocktails and really good
wines, located on the second floor of the Cape May
ferry terminal.
The menu features all regional fare including fish,
vegetables, fruits and herbs from Beach Plum Farm
and other New Jersey farms. They also offer some fun
sweets next door at the Chocolate Shop.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Every night for the next four months
a grand pan-hemispheric drama will
play out in the skies over Cape May.
Millions of songbirds will be bailing
out of the north and heading to winter
territories in Central and South America.
From dusk to dawn, you can hear the frail
piping of their flight call notes. Were you to
ask any of them where they were going only
one in 10 could tell you. For most of these
tiny migrants, this is their first fall migration,
and most will not survive to establish a winter
territory. It is the second great challenge
of their young lives. Just weeks ago, these
waifs were pink squirmy things encased in
a shell in a nest in the great boreal forests of
Canada — the planet’s greatest bird hatchery.
But breaking free of their shells was just
their first big test. Migration is their second.
Ninety percent of birds hatched in any given
year do not survive to adulthood. Harsh terms
because migration is filled with peril.
So why risk such a perilous crossing?
Have to. Most of these nocturnal migrants,
warblers, vireos and thrushes are insectivorous.
In a few short weeks, the approaching
winter will shut down insect activity in the
north. Yes, some northern songbirds stay in
the north. These are specialized to switch over
to a diet of seeds. But most birds face winter’s
privations by avoidance. They rely on their
wings to ferry themselves to more hospitable
regions around the earth’s middle or southern
North America.
But why migrate at night? It’s cooler and
there is reduced risk of being picked off by
hungry falcons. So nocturnal migration is the
norm. You can even see these tiny waifs as
they pass over Cape May, their pale underparts
illuminated by the lights of the town.
I’ve stood on the top floor of the Grand Hotel
and watched them zip by. Some, confused by
the lights, even land in the trees on the mall.
Much of this migratory wave passes just
offshore. Imagine being a weary-winged
songbird finding yourself five miles from land
as the sun comes up and hungry falcons start
hunting. The bird has no choice but to fly on
to land, which is why all habitat in Cape May
becomes critical habitat in the fall. Even the
potted plant on your beach front porch may be
the sanctuary that saves a weary migrant. I’ve
even had residents tell me that tiny saw-whet
owls have roosted on their balconies.
How can you help migrating songbirds?
A yard rich in native plants helps. Some birds
respond well to an assortment of bird seeds.
But most of all keep house cats indoors.
The proverbial (and I guess actual)
coast is clear! Labor Day has come
and gone, and there is a little (maybe
just a little) time to take a breath.
Time for some stargazing, perhaps?
And yes, I absolutely do mean finding that
perfect spot on an outside deck (or near the
ocean) to look up at the nighttime sky. But
there is other gazing as well…
For some, the best spot is the lighthouse
on Cape May Point! Visit spacetourismguide.
com to discover the landmark made a top
locale for stargazing in the entire state! Check
out the special Stairway to the Stars Climb
and Full Moon Climb at capemaymac.org.
And with the holiday weekend in the rearview
mirror, maybe you can finally get caught
up on that intergalactic stargazing you’ve been
putting off. Of course, I’m talking about some
sci-fi TV binges!
There’s a lot of reasons for me to focus
on two big sci-fi shows — one ending and
another beginning. And this is not a redo
of my Star Wars v Star Trek columns, but the
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
offerings are from these two major franchises.
The second season of Strange New Worlds
ended last month. As the name suggests, it is
a part of the Star Trek universe. And it is superb
prequel to the 1960s show that started it all.
You’ll hear familiar names with fresh faces:
Spock, Kirk, and Uhura, to name a few.
Going beyond obvious nostalgia for these
characters, Strange New Worlds harkens back
to the best of this franchise. Complicated
storylines simply unfolded, bold ventures,
and magnificent art direction — this show
delivers. They throw the Starfleet characters
into the deep end of the galaxy, and it’s sink or
swim. Each episode is an adventure.
From the episodic to the epic. Star Wars
released a new series on Disney+ last month.
Ahsoka follows the adventures of a Jedi
(Rosario Dawson) hunting down remnants of
the seemingly destroyed evil empire. It’s getting
rave reviews from critics and audiences
alike. And for good reason.
The story, the art direction, and the performances
are outstanding achievements in
this show. The story unfolds slowly — as an
epic should — and each turn deepens the
mystery and highlights the action. I’ve got to
be honest, I’m drawn to the Star Trek series
more. See two podcasts comparing the franchises
at flixyoumissed.com to hear why.
Where are you stargazing (virtually or
actually)? There are some great spots to settle
in and set your stare. And what’s on your
watchlist? Email flixyoumissed@gmail.com.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, sip your way through Cape May wineries!
Wine is trendy right now, but wine
grapes are not a new crop in New
Jersey. According to Rutgers
University, the Royal Academy of
Great Britain recognized quality
wine from New Jersey as early as 1767. Colonial
farmers grew sweet grapes, taking advantage of
our sandy soils and long growing season, and
produced sweet wines. However, up until 1981,
a Prohibition-era law restricted the number of
wineries in the state to one per one million residents,
leaving us with seven total. Since its was
repeal, there are more than seven wineries just in
Cape May County — over 50 around the state —
and the wines just keep getting better.
Cape May Winery is the oldest winery in
Cape May County, having produced its first
wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon, in 1996. They offer
tastings for groups of up to four and invite you
to sample wines with the guidance of an expert.
Guests under 21 (including infants in strollers)
and pets are not permitted for the tasting.
Or just come for lunch and enjoy their tapas
menu (capemaywinery.com). At Hawk Haven
Vineyard & Winery (hawkhavenvineyard.com)
you don’t need a reservation for a guided wine
tasting for groups of four or fewer. This 100-
acre, family-run “oasis” calls to bird watchers
as well as wine lovers, as it serves as “a welcome
resting ground for many migrating birds of prey.”
Another family enterprise is Turdo Vineyards
(turdovineyards.com), which welcomes you
like a cousin from the old country. Jessie Creek
Winery in Cape May Court House offers “sig-
nature spirals” — $27 for five wines (jessiecreekwinery.com).
At Willow Creek Winery (willowcreekwinerycapemay.com)
make your reservation for a
seated wine tasting presented by a wine educator
who will teach you about their “signature
three-sip system,” sure to “enlighten your senses
and change the way you look at handcrafted
wines.” Tastings are $55 per person.
As you plan your trip along the winery trail,
consider a taxi or ride-share service for safety.
Or, try a wine tour, and let someone else do
all the planning. DaySipper Tours (daysipper.
com) advertises a tour of three wineries (or
breweries or distilleries) for $165 per person,
with a minimum of four people. Cape May Wine
Tours (tastingsandtours.com) takes your group
of eight or more to two wineries and out to lunch
for $185 per person. Smaller groups may be
accommodated. Cape May MAC hosts a wine
trolley tour that starts with lunch at the Pier
House before traveling to Jessie Creek and Natali
Vineyards — $125 per person. Visit capemaymac.org
for more.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I know it’s post-Labor Day, but people
will still be using the beach and I have an issue
with entitled beach goers thinking they own
their section of the sand. My family and I had
our beach chairs in a semi-circle on Windsor
Beach so the kids could play in the middle with
plenty of adult supervision. An older couple
came down and plopped their chairs in the
center, forcing the kids to move their toys. I
asked the couple to move just to the left so the
kids could play. Their answer was, “This is
our beach. We’ve sat in this spot for 20 years
and we’re not moving now.” I was so tempted
to kick sand in their faces. Instead, we were
the ones who had to move — all 10 of us. What
would you have done? — Angry Beach Goer
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Angry
The Answer Lady is glad you resisted the
urge to escalate the situation and thus ruin
your beautiful day. Crumpy people have no
concept of compromise. It has to be their way,
or the police get involved. Who needs that? If
that happens again, simply gather your crew
and take a break at Akroteria. Nothing soothes
the soul more than tacos, pizza and water ice.
By the time you’re back, all will be forgotten.
Dear Answer Lady
I met a guy a month ago and we like each
other very much. The problem is his parents
hate me and they haven’t even met me yet.
He was engaged to a woman who comes from
a very wealthy family and was going to be
brought into the family business. One day he
decided he didn’t like her and broke it off. Then
he met me. Not the other way around. Still,
his parents are convinced I’m a homewrecker.
I know this because his sister and I are good
friends. In fact, that’s how we met. What can I
do to persuade them I am a good person? I hate
being at odds with his parents. — Disliked
Dear Disliked
A month is not a lifetime. It’s early. If this
blossoms, all you can do is endure. You can’t
make people like you if they’ve decided they
don’t. If he’s a stand-up guy, he will pave the
way. For now, kill em with kindness. When the
time is right, invite them over for an outdoor
barbecue. Get some steaks from Westside
Market or Gaiss’. Pick up a pie to sweeten the
welcome.
ANNUAL 9/11
PATRIOT DAY CEREMONY
Monday, September 11 at 6pm
Cape May City at the Cove on Beach Avenue, West End
The Kiwanis Club of Cape May in conjunction with the
City of Cape May honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the 2001 attacks on
the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93.
The PATRIOT DAY commemoration ceremony held at Beach Avenue at
the Cove is a solemn and moving ceremony with speakers from local
organizations along with community leaders who remind us of the
sacrifice of Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Technicians who valiantly
struggled that day to save lives.
There is a moment of silence as the flag is lowered for the summer
season. Bring the family and take part in this community event.
Please bring your beach chairs!
LADY AVERY is a sweet social girl whose family
could no longer care for her. This English
Pointer has great leash skills and enjoys car
rides. She is a ten-year-old girl but has plenty
of energy. Lady Avery is good with children
and would do well with other dogs and cats as
long as she has a slow introduction. This girl
would make a wonderful family pet.
LILLY is a lively 11-year-old lab mix. Her
owner passed away and no one in the family
could keep her. Lilly is an energetic girl who
loves to run around the yard and play fetch.
She walks quickly on a leash chasing down
every scent she finds. Lilly is a sweet pup
looking for a loving home to live out her senior
years.
CARAMEL came to the shelter when her
owner could no longer care for her. She is a
sweet and gentle soul who is looking for a
family to show her the love she deserves. Caramel
is a bit nervous who looks to her human
for guidance. She needs a slow introduction to
dogs and cats, but is good with children. Caramel
would make a wonderful companion.
THE SUPERHEROES are a trio of very brave
kittens. Hulk, Ironman and Captain American
are a group of loyal and loving felines ready
for a new home. They are all housetrained,
up to date on all vaccinations and neutered. If
you do choose these three boys, they are best
adopted together. If interested, please contact
the shelter.
POLKA AND DOT are a pair of captivating
kittens who are inseparable. It would be best
if they were adopted together. These boys are
up to date on all vaccinations and neutered.
Polka and Dot are a curious duo and love to
play and explore. They’d be great in a home
with other cats and will make great pets to a
loving family.
ADAM is a friendly and outgoing boy who has
been at the shelter too long! He is a special
needs kitty with severe allergies that primarily
affect his skin. Adam requires a special diet
and regular shots to control his symptoms.
His fun personality overshadows any ailments.
Adam would make a great addition to
any family willing to care for his needs.
