Startups@EMO Hannover – 60 young 

companies from twelve countries will 

show their competences 

EMO Hannover 2023 from 

September 18 to 23 will once again 

feature a large Startup Area on S- 

tand E34 in Hall 9, presented jointly 

by the EMO organizer VDW (German 

Machine Tool Builders' Association) 

and the VDMA Startup 

Machine. "Startups bring a breath 

of fresh air to well-established industrial 

sectors because they often 

function as pioneers and trendsetters 

in their field of business," says 

Stephanie Simon, who is responsible 

for the project at the VDW. 

That's why established exhibitors 

are often more than interested in 

talking to young companies, she 

points out. "The EMO Startup Area 

currently features nearly 60 companies 

that are looking to break into 

the production technology market 

and appeal to its users," adds 

Juliane Salten of the VDMA. Their 

primarily aim is to raise their profile 

and set up networks with customers 

and investors. 

Anna Weirauch, Customer Success 

Manager at ai-omatic solutions in 

Hamburg, agrees: "We are excited 

about the possibility to showcase 

our AI-based digital maintenance 

assistant in the Startup Area at this 

year’s EMO Hannover. We're also 

looking forward to networking and 

showing how we can help our customers 

maintain their machines 

more effectively." 

Matchmaking, Speeddating and S- 

tartup Night 

The organizers have come up with 

a number of ideas for helping exhibitors 

to share information and 

network. The goal is to provide a 

professional networking platform 

where experiences, possibilities 

and opportunities in production 

technology can be discussed, but also 

where new partnerships can be 

forged. David Hahn, CEO of Remberg 

GmbH from Munich, firmly 

supports the venture: "In 2019 we 

were able to attract the renowned

mechanical engineering company 

Klingelnberg as a customer at EMO. 

And everywhere you looked, there 

were managers from the very companies 

we were selling our digitalization 

solutions to. Things like this 

only happen at EMO." 

To support this forging of contacts 

even more strongly, EMO Hannover 

2023 will feature “Startup Matchmaking”, 

which will organize faceto-face 

meetings at the event between 

established companies and 

appropriate startups and digital solution 

providers. The Speeddating 

event will give participants the opportunity 

to exchange ideas exclusively 

with exhibiting startups – and 

to explore further areas of shared 

interest during the subsequent networking 

session. The EMO Startup 

Night including Speeddating on 19 

September 2023 will give exhibitors 

and visitors alike the chance to 

meet new company founders in 

person and make contact in a relaxed 

atmosphere. Finally, tours of 

the EMO Startup Area will be offered 

on each day of the fair. These 

will give participants a rapid 

overview of the topics and main focuses 

of the young companies at 

the fair. 

Startups from twelve countries on 

board 

The joint stand of EIT Manufacturing 

Darmstadt is offering something 

special. It will feature 20 startups 

from twelve countries – Austria, 

Finland, France, Germany, Greece, 

Israel, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, S- 

pain, Sweden and Turkey. These 

will be presenting their products 

and services under the joint umbrella 

of the Innovation Network at 

EMO Hannover. "Companies are an 

important part of the innovation 

network that EIT Manufacturing is 

developing. We are currently supporting 

around 80 startups, are in 

regular contact with more than 150 

other companies and are constantly 

expanding our network," says Dr. 

Christian Bölling, Director of EIT 

Manufacturing Central. The organization 

fosters the development of 

prototypes through to marketable 

products, brings startups and industry 

together to solve challenges in 

innovative ways, and provides education 

and training for workers in 

industry to make the companies 

more competitive.

From September 4, a big social media 

challenge will also start on 

LinkedIn, Instagram/Facebook and 

Twitter under the title EMOspark - 

Igniting Start-up Innovation at EMO 

Hannover 2023. The aim is to make 

the companies known and support 

them in generating leads. Companies 

are encouraged to post short 

teaser videos or posts about their 

products/technologies before the 

show using #EMOspark2023. During 

the show, they will be complemented 

by daily live updates from 

the booths with photos and videos. 

And finally, after the show, each s- 

tartup is again asked to publish a 

short post with highlights of their 

participation at the show and share 

what they learned. "By using the 

hashtag #EMOspark2023, all posts 

can be easily found and shared 

which is increasing the visibility of 

the campaign. The combination of 

pre-show teaser content, live updates 

during the show and postshow 

summaries will capture the 

interest of the target audience and 

create a lasting impact," concludes

From the 3D CAD Model to Workpiece 

with Just One Click 

At the EMO 2023 (Hannover, 

September 18-23, 2023), the German 

software manufacturer 

SCHOTT SYSTEME GmbH is offering 

visitors the opportunity to test its 

automated CNC processing CAMsmart 

live at the exhibition stand 

(Hall 9, Stand E05). 

The brand-new automated drilling 

and milling with CAMsmart is a special 

focus of the latest version 3.10 

of the CAD/CAM software Pictures 

by PC from SCHOTT SYSTEME 

GmbH. CAMsmart drastically reduces 

the CAM preparation times of 

typical multi-sided, prismatic workpieces 

(at least by a factor of 10) 

compared to previous procedures. 

Visitors to the EMO 2023 are cordially 

invited to the booth of

their own prismatic 3D models in 

STEP format tested live at the booth. 

The aim is not only to highlight the 

significant cost savings that are possible 

with such automation, but also 

to offer visitors a realistic benchmark 

so that they can practically 

compare the effectiveness of other 

CAD/CAM systems on the same 

models. 

First, the CAMsmart process automatically 

aligns the 3D CAD model 

so that it is suitably orientated for 

the NC machine. This is followed by 

the geometric analysis of the workpiece, 

in which typical, multi-sided 

2.5D or 3D milling and drilling features 

are identified. Tested machining 

strategies are then automatically 

assigned to the part according to 

criteria such as pocket size, corner 

radii, drill hole types and material 

(e.g., facing, contouring, pocket 

milling, chamfering, drilling, rounding 

and cornering). All strategies can 

of course optionally be edited. At 

the end of the automated process, 

there is also a simulation of the material 

removal and a check for possible 

collisions and rest material.

Marposs introduces Ultra Wideband 

technology 

Marposs introduces at EMO the 

Ultra Wideband technology. 

The main objective of the touch 

probing systems is to optimize the 

production process of the machine 

tools, increasing both quality and 

quantity: the automatic detection of 

the machines axes’ position offers 

advantages in terms of positioning 

and control of the workpieces, directly 

in the machining center and 

the milling machines. For this reason, 

the probes are mounted directly 

on the machine spindle, that’s 

why a wireless signal transmission is

Retaining value, conserving resources 

Strategies for transforming to the 

circular economy 

Machine tools are valuable assets. 

The more expensive they are, the 

more reason there is to maintain 

them carefully, repair them if necessary, 

and keep them in the production 

process for as long as possible. 

A service life of 20 or 30 years is not 

uncommon for these machines. But 

in these times of retrofitting and remanufacturing, 

does it even make 

sense to talk of the "end of life"? – 

Although machine tools are already 

being held up as models for the 

modern circular economy, a lot of 

work still needs to be done to persuade 

stakeholders in the world of 

production technology. This applies 

to the ecological benefits of digital 

maintenance and servicing strategies, 

as well as to the realization that 

even very old units can be upgraded 

to high-tech machines in ways that 

conserve resources and make economic 

sense. 

Climate and environmental targets 

as well as the scarcity of certain raw 

materials are now making a rethink 

necessary. This is also set to be discussed 

in the "Future of Sustainability 

in Production" trend topic at E- 

MO Hannover 2023. Based on the 

current production technology 

methods, the manufacture of steel, 

aluminum, plastics and cement 

alone would generate about 800 gigatons 

of CO2 in the 21st century, 

calculates Prof. Dr. Holger Kohl,

Conserving resources is the 

second major pillar of sustainable

longside the reduction of energy 

consumption. 

The circular economy is 

about more than recycling 

Unlike the currently prevalent 

linear economy in which 

products with relatively 

short lives are disposed of after 

use, the circular economy 

focuses on achieving the 

longest possible useful life 

followed by repair, reuse and 

recycling. Resources are kept 

in circulation and, if possible, 

used for new products. From 

a circular economy perspective, aspects 

such as maintenance and servicing 

aimed at extending service 

life, as well as the reuse and recycling 

of components and parts are

such as its "Service Monitor", 

which centrally manages, monitors 

and documents maintenance tasks, 

including for multiple machines simultaneously. 

Growing importance of digitalization 

Digital assistance systems grew significantly 

in importance during the 

pandemic, says Paul Kössl. The number 

of remote maintenance calls 

alone more than tripled during this 

time. In the meantime, half of all U- 

nited Grinding Group machines are 

now equipped with the new C.O.R.E. 

intelligent operating system, which 

enables data to be exchanged a- 

mong machines, including with 

third-party systems, via the built-in 

umati interface. C.O.R.E. provides 

access to digital solutions in the machine 

itself, with no need to install 

additional hardware. For example,

remote operation can be supported 

by a video conference using the 

camera integrated in the C.O.R.E. 

panel. Digitalization helps companies 

to work more precisely and 

closely in order to maintain their 

productivity and increase reliability 

levels, it is claimed. Kössl shares the 

view that the future is likely to embrace 

Big Data analyses, artificial intelligence 

and machine learning as 

the basis for predictive maintenance, 

even if many users still have 

major reservations about this. "But 

we're already seeing a new generation 

of digital-native machine operators 

who are perfectly at home with 

using the associated technologies." 

Gantry nachher 

Scientific research is also likely to 

make a contribution here. The 

BMBF (German Federal Ministry of 

Education and Research) is currently 

funding numerous projects along 

the value chain. These include projects 

dedicated to repair-friendly 

product design and the recovery of 

raw materials. Digitalization is seen 

as a key success factor for the circular 

economy. Digital technologies allow 

better networking among the 

relevant players. The projects funded 

so far include the Relife (Adaptive 

Re-Manufacturing for Life Cycle Optimization 

of Networked Capital 

Goods) project. According to the 

machine tool laboratory at RWTH 

Aachen University spearheading the 

project, this is basically an adaptive 

maintenance strategy that evaluates 

data from sensors to determine the 

optimum time and scope of maintenance 

measures. Technical, economic 

and ecological aspects are 

taken into account. Preventive remanufacturing 

measures based on 

the sensor-monitored wear of components 

are proposed. This allows 

the aging machines to be kept at the 

technical level of a new machine, an 

approach that is also likely to spawn 

new business models. 

“R” strategies for the second and 

third life 

Researchers often talk about “R” s- 



trategies – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – 

as basic principles. The R strategies 

form the basic framework for the 

transformation to a circular economy. 

The aims are to REDUCE the use 

of materials by not disposing of discarded 

products but selling them to 

third parties and REUSING them. In 

order to extend the useful life of 

products, they need to be REPAIRED 

so that they can return to fulfilling 

their function. REFURBISHMENT involves 

not only repairing the components, 

but also upgrading them to 

the current state of the art. RE- 

MANUFACTURING, by contrast, is 

the process of endowing a product 

with the same quality as a new one. 

The general overhauling of machines 

represents an important 

branch of business for machine tool 

manufacturers. What can be 

achieved here is demonstrated by 

Waldrich Coburg which manufactures 

not only very large horizontal 

and vertical milling machines but also 

vertical lathes and grinding machines. 

Three machines are given a 

complete retrofit every year or so. 

As Retrofit Project Manager Steffen 

Nitzsche explains, the company already 

uses highly recyclable materials 

such as cast iron and steel for its 

products, thus reducing the consumption 

of natural resources. Very 

little plastic is used. The machines

have hydrostatic guides that exhibit 

virtually no wear and are merely regarded 

as "well run in" after 30 or 

40 years, the expert notes. For example, 

he describes a gantry milling 

machine which was built in 1981. 

The machine – with imposing floor 

plate dimensions of 3,600 mm x 

13,500 mm, a passage width of 

4,600 mm and a passage height of 

3,500 mm – received a milling support 

system that was mechanically 

and electrically completely overhauled 

and modernized, and a modern 

gantry drive. All feed gears were 

also overhauled in the process. The 

machine was given a completely 

new electrical system as well as a 

modern M Helmprobst Siemens Waldrich 840D control Coburg unit, 

new axle drives, and hydrostatic and 

hydraulic components. 

Overall, around 90 to 95 percent of 

a machine’s weight is retained during 

such retrofitting. The remaining 

5 percent usually consists of control 

cabinet and cable materials. These 

are not disposed of either, but are 

handed over to an external service 

provider, and 30 to 40 percent of 

them reused. 

"New from old" as an alternative 

to investing in new equipment 

Matthias Helmprobst, Head of Control 

Technology at Waldrich Coburg, 

is keen to point out that it is not only 

possible to completely overhaul a 

machine that is 40 years or older, 

but also to upgrade it to the current 

state of the art. After the overhaul, 

the fact that the machine uses the 

latest control and computer technology 

in conjunction with the latest 

operating systems and safety architectures 

means that it also meets 

the current IT standards and can 

thus be integrated into the company 

network, for example. Depending 

on the scope of the work involved, 

the financial outlay for modernization 

ranges between 30 and 60 percent 

of the cost of a comparable 

new machine and is therefore often 

the more economical alternative. 

At Waldrich Coburg, the topic of 

the circular economy is accorded a 

very high priority, emphasizes 

Matthias Helmprobst. In his view, 

whether or not it is implemented is 

based less on technical possibilities, 

but is rather a question of mentality. 

"A lot of people feel that a 40-yearold 

machine must be antiquated," 

he says, adding: "We need to 

change such thinking if we want to 

move production forward in terms 

of the circular economy."

Filtermist at EMO 2023 

UK oil mist collectors manufacturer 

Filtermist will be showcasing its 

world renowned centrifugal oil mist 

filtration system, which was recently 

re-launched complete with a high 

efficiency afterfilter to ensure even 

cleaner air, at EMO 2023. 

And brand new for the 2023 show, 

Filtermist will be introducing an additional 

feature for this range - the 

new F Monitor Essential monitoring 

device. 

Visitors to the Absolent Air Care 

Group booth (F41 in Hall 6) will be 

able to see a working prototype of 

the new product which has been designed 

to offer all Filtermist oil mist 

collector users a simple way to ensure 

their unit is working properly – 

providing peace of mind that employees 

are protected from exposure 

to harmful airborne oil mist 

particles. 

F Monitor Essential monitors the 

airflow of the unit using velocity 

pressure readings. A blinking green 

light indicates that the airflow is at 

least 80% of the calibrated rate 

specified at the time of commissioning. 

If the light turns amber it means 

airflow has dropped to between 

50% and 80% of the required flow 

indicating that the Filtermist unit 

needs attention, whilst red means a 

reduction in airflow to below 50% of 

the calibrated rate which could indicate 

a blockage, or the Filtermist u- 

nit needs servicing. 

The new monitor is powered by t- 

wo standard AA batteries so they 

can easily be replaced – ideally annually, 

or in line with regular servicing 

intervals. The device remembers 

the settings parameters when the 

batteries are replaced so the operator 

does not need to reset the device. 

If at any time the operator 

wishes to test the monitoring device 

is working, there is a physical button 

on the front of the unit which can be 

pressed to run a test. 

F Monitor Essential, which attaches 

to the machine tool via rear mounted 

magnets, easily connects to the 

Filtermist unit with no electrical 

connection required. A QR code 

printed on the front of the monitor 

directs users to a dedicated web 

page where the user guide and an 

installation and set-up film can be 

accessed.

Kyocera introduces its variety of 

innovations at EMO Hannover 2023 

High-performing and durable products 

Kyocera’s products stand for excellent 

quality and durability. In doing so, the 

company introduces new grades series 

PR18 (PR1825, PR1835, PR1810) for 

next-generation PVD coating. These 

three new grades can be applied to current 

and new milling cutter systems, including 

face mills, shoulder face mills, 

profile cutters and high feed cutters. 

Due to Kyocera's innovative double coating 

technology with a special nano-coating 

called MEGACOAT NANO EX, customers 

can expect to get up to 2.5 times 

longer tool life than they would with 

conventional tools. 

Next level milling 

Furthermore, Kyocera is also introducing 

its new cutters MB45 and MA90 

milling cutters, which offer high-performance 

machining solutions that are 

durable and versatile. Thanks to the new 

versatile 45° and high quality 90° cutters, 

the company guarantees next level 

milling. The MEGACOAT NANO EX coating 

technology that is implemented in 

the PR18 series allows extended tool 

life. The MB45 also deliver the “low cutting 

force” benefits of positive inserts 

and the “fracture resistance” features of 

negative inserts, as well as providing an 

excellent surface finish. Due to those 

facts, the MB45 cutters symbolize an adequate 

solution for general machining 

and are valuable to new machining solution 

challenges. On the other hand, the 

MA90 and its grade PR18 series coating 

technology provide high quality surface 

finish, excellent wall accuracy, multifunctional 

machining and extended tool 

life. 

As Kyocera aims to contribute to a more

Kyocera’s latest milling cutters with new PR18 

New PVD coated carbide grades for 

heat resistant alloys 

With the introduction of PR115S and 

PR120S, Kyocera has developed special 

PVD-coated carbide grades for machining 

heat-resistant alloys. The new grades 

feature a unique carbide substrate with 

powerful heat-resistant properties. Additionally, 

MEGACOAT TOUGH, a new 

PVD coating technology, ensures longer 

tool life and stable machining. However, 

PR115S is the first recommendation for 

continuous finishing of heat-resistant alloys, 

while the PR120S is the first recommendation 

for continuous finishing 

to light interrupted machining of stainless 

steel. 

New CVD coated carbide grades for s- 

teel turning 

Kyocera's CVD carbide grades for steel 

turning, CA115P and CA125P, aim to set 

a new milestone in the metalworking industry. 

The two grades stand for their 

wear and fracture resistance, longer tool 

life and highly efficient machining in a 

wide range of machining applications. 

Additionally, the new PMG chipbreaker 

adds more extra value to tool life and 

tooling quality thanks to its excellent 

chip control. 

New KAV anti-vibration boring bar 

Deep hole boring puts significant stress 

on the workpiece and the lathe itself. 

Maintaining rigidity and stability 

throughout the operation is essential to 

avoid vibrations, chatter, or deflection, 

which can lead to poor surface finish, dimensional 

inaccuracies, and even tool 

breakage. Here comes the new KAV into 

action. Kyocera offers a unique anti-vibration 

mechanism which provides superior 

anti-chatter performance. A builtin 

proprietary damper technology 

dampens vibration while a superior antichatter 

performance over carbide bars 

is being realized. Customers can expect 

improved surface finish, enhanced dimensional
