INTERVIEW
GEORGE ZHAO
CEO of HONOR

I NEWS I
Morning Briefing
by Oliver Merlin,
Managing Director of IFA
Management
“Good morning IFA! Packed halls,
cool tech, and comfy shoes ahead”
Good morning everyone and welcome
to IFA 2023! On the first day of IFA, we
are proud to announce that the show
is completely sold out this year. We are
very excited for all of you to discover
the 2,059 exhibitors from 48 countries
we have in store. After two press
days packed with presentations and
journalists, we are opening the doors
of Messe Berlin to IFA’s visitors and we
have a packed programme for you all
this year.
In addition to all of the historic brands
you know and love at IFA, 30% of
exhibitors are new this year, which
means there is a lot to discover and
take in. The halls are packed with new
products and exciting innovations so
make sure you plan for full days and
wear comfortable shoes!
I would suggest starting off the day by
attending the opening keynote from
HONOR on the main stage in Hall 21b
at 10:00 a.m. HONOR CEO George Zhao
will give a much anticipated presentation,
but I won’t give any more details on this,
I don’t want to spoil the surprise! Then
make sure to attend Hisense’s keynote,
opening the IFA Leaders Summit at
11:00 a.m., followed by the conference
“Retail media and beyond—unlocking
full-funnel advertising with Amazon Ads”
at 11:35 a.m.
IFA Next is back bigger and better than
ever this year with 350 startups and
over 200 registered investors. We are
offering a startup safari tour every day
at 10:15 a.m. so visitors can really get
a taste for the top innovations at the
show. IFA Next is an essential part of
IFA and it is crucial that this part of the
show continues to grow. We are very
happy about the response this year, it’s
a concentration of innovation you won’t
want to miss out on.
Sustainability is a major priority for IFA,
and to illustrate this fully we’ve organised
a dedicated Sustainability Village for
the first time. Located in Hall 2.2, this
dedicated exhibitor area focuses on
connecting sustainability leaders with
the wider IFA community. There will also
be a comprehensive conference forum
on sustainability best practices, kicking
off today with a keynote from Miele’s
Rebecca Steinhage at 2:00 p.m.
If some of you need a little break from
being inside, September is a beautiful
month to enjoy the outdoors in Berlin.
IFA Outdoors offers visitors silent hubs,
co-working spaces where you can
discuss and negotiate over a cool drink
and a number of other surprises along
the way.
This historic show has such an
important place in the industry, and
ahead of IFA’s 100th birthday we wanted
to give you a show that lives up to this
reputation and all of your expectations.
But don’t take my word for it, it’s time
to get out there and discover it all for
yourselves! I wish you all the best for
this first day of business, networking
and discovery. See you tomorrow!
I NEWS I
Dr Sara Warneke, Managing Director at gfu, and Oliver Merlin, Managing Director at IFA Management,
speaking at this year's IFA opening press conference on Wednesday
From AI to sustainability: IFA 2023 defines the
next chapter of consumer electronics and home
appliances
"Face to face is back" was the message conveyed to an eager
audience at the IFA 2023 opening press conference
The tone of the IFA opening press conference on Wednesday
was positive and optimistic, with a sense of triumph and
determination as the consumer electronics and home
appliances market continues to recover in a "changing world".
For five days from today, 2,059 exhibitors
from 48 countries are presenting their
latest products and innovations at IFA
2023. Some of the industry's biggest
brands as well as 350 startups are
among exhibitors at the trade show,
taking up all 13,000sqm of its 26 halls.
So "wear the appropriate footwear",
organisers said. What's more, almost
one in three exhibitors (30%) are at
IFA for the first time and "visitors are
coming in very big numbers", media
professionals were told.
Dr Sara Warneke, Managing Director
of IFA brand owner gfu, was met with
applause as she took to the stage and
welcomed what she described as "her
favourite time of year". Addressing the
conference, she said: "I really love the
buzz in the halls and seeing innovations
and new products. We can't wait to
get started and deliver the full IFA
experience."
Despite a year "full of challenges"
with high inflation and low consumer
confidence, Warneke advised that
market recovery is on the horizon. "We
can see the beginnings of a turnaround,"
she said.
"We are certain that IFA will rise to the
occasion and once again demonstrate
its value as the world’s most important
platform for consumer electronics
and home appliances. The innovation
presented at IFA will once against drive
sustainable growth."
IFA is being "taken to the next level"
ahead of its 100th birthday next year,
media professionals were told. This
year’s big themes are Connected Living,
Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and
Sustainability, which are also dominating
the agenda at the first IFA Leaders
Summit on Friday and Saturday. Oliver
Merlin, Managing Director of new IFA
organiser IFA Management GmbH, said
it is "an absolute honour" to manage the
2023 edition which focuses on "muchloved
traditions" and "some new bits of
magic".
New features this year include IFA's
Sustainability Village which showcases
green innovation, smart applications,
best sustainability practices, and expert
insights. The zone comprises a stage, an
exhibition area, and a Mend and Repair
Shop, where attendees can take small
broken household devices to be fixed.
Also making its debut is the House of
Robots, which gives attendees firsthand
insight into how robots might
affect the future.
Time has been invested into growing the
IFA Next startup and innovation zone,
which this year presents 350 startup
companies. "That's not the whole
story," Merlin said. "We have over 200
registered investors and they have their
own lounge." The area also comprises
a content stage, featuring pitch battles
and talks such as "successful corporatestartup
innovation" and "how to navigate
change".
Another area of expansion is the
IFA Leaders Summit, bringing "two
days of top-level 'TED-style' content"
from gaming and AI on day one to
sustainability and health on day two.
"The level of speakers we have got is
truly phenomenal and is a really nice
addition to IFA," Merlin added
ECOVACS launches innovations
at IFA 2023
ECOVACS has been at the cutting edge of smart home
robotics since its creation, and it is bringing its innovative
and intelligent robotic solutions to IFA this year. We caught
up with Yannan Liu, ECOVACS GTM Director, ahead of the
brand's press conference at IFA today, to talk about the
exciting innovations they’ll be presenting.
Mr Liu explained that ECOVACS will be
showcasing a range of groundbreaking
product innovations, including one of
their flagship offerings the DEEBOT
X2 OMNI. “This ECOVACS innovation
reshapes home cleaning with a square
punch and edge-to-edge cleaning for
unmatched cleaning precision and a
truly dust-free home,” he affirmed.
Mr Liu told us that the DEEBOT X2
OMNI “boasts an array of advanced
features, including an innovative slim
square-shaped design, allowing it
to improve edge and corner cleaning
efficiency.” He explained that its slim
design can enhance the accessibility for
lower and narrow spaces such as under
the couch or bed with height of 10cm so
cleaning coverage is increased.
Another feature of the DEEBOT X2 OMNI
is the ECOVACS AINA Model, which
applies AI technology for navigation
and obstacle avoidance. This navigation
technology uses reinforcement learning,
which enables the DEEBOT X2 OMNI
to take immediate action directly based
on external information obtained from
sensors. “The robot learns as it drives
and adapts to the new environment.
If obstacles suddenly appear, it can
react instantly and adjust its path
accordingly, thereby cleaning efficiency
is enhanced,” Mr Liu explained.
Additionally, ECOVACS’ upgraded onboard
voice assistant technology YIKO
2.0 allows users to control X2 OMNI
for cleaning rooms, or even tight areas
easily
At the press event, Markus Miele
showcased what he referred to as a
“new product category” and a first for
Miele. The firm's new Miele Aerium
Laundry Cabinet allows users to refresh
garments, eliminating odours and
creases as well as allergens, bacteria,
and viruses, without the need to dry
clean or wash them, protecting clothes
and the environment. Making use of
technologies from other Miele products,
the Aerium Laundry Cabinet, is an
elegant home solution. “The appliance
is not only meant to be hidden in the
laundry room,” said Markus Miele.
Yannan Liu
ECOVACS GTM Director
Beyond new products, Miele executives
also discussed sustainability. Markus
Miele encouraged consumers to use
their appliances’ “Eco” mode and
invited IFA visitors to check out the
firm’s Eco House in the sustainability
village. He also discussed Miele's
efforts to develop a circular economy
with a refurbished washing machine
initiative. Axel Kniehl linked Miele’s
sustainability efforts to its positioning:
“Miele as a premium brand stands for
sustainability"
ADVERTORIAL
A thriving Reseller Park
highlights the growing
importance of green
commerce at IFA 2023
Mr Fisher Yu,
President of Hisense Group
Holdings Co., Ltd
The scenario-driven future
of tech: Hisense opens this
year's IFA Leaders Summit
The Reseller Park is covering a significant portion of Hall
25 this year, hosting 110 exhibitors from all over the world
including Germany, Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, and
the USA. This expansion is also a testament to the growing
significance of sustainability, reflected in all aspects of the
Reseller Park - from stand design, to the products on show,
and the conference sessions.
Encompassing B2B distribution,
reselling, and trading, the Reseller
Park is showcasing a wide range
of exhibitors and solutions. A new
addition this year is IFA's first
refurbishing marketplace, featuring
around 20 international exhibitors
including eBay. Trade visitors to the
Reseller Park will also be met with
an exciting and diverse range of
equipment and accessories related to
CE, smart home technology, IoT, and
mobile devices, underlining strong
European specialisation when it
comes to trade.
Jan Nintemann and his agency Global
Fairs have been organising the Reseller
Park at IFA for 25 years, and they have
long been convinced of the need to
address the climate crisis. Nintemann
asserts that 70% of carbon emissions
stem from economic activities, and the
message is clear: a climate-neutral
economy is imperative. Within this
context, green practices are one of the
foremost opportunities for economic
growth.
The Reseller Park is fully integrating
sustainable practices, including
reusable stand constructions,
predominantly environmentallycertified
materials, eco-certified
wall graphics, LED lighting, recycled
carpets, and sustainable catering.
And it doesn’t stop there. Innovative
beverage vending is contributing to a
remarkable 40% in CO2 reduction. All
of these strategies further exemplify
the industry's shift towards reducing
its ecological footprint.
While the Reseller Park has been
a prominent IFA B2B platform in
the past, this year it is anticipating
even greater success, echoing the
increasing prevalence of climateconscious
commerce in the industry
Hall 25 / Stand 150
Hisense is opening the IFA
Leaders Summit today with
the keynote address, "The
Scenario-driven Future of
Tech" from 11:00 to 11:25
a.m. on the Main Stage
in Hall 21b. Mr Fisher Yu,
President of Hisense Group
Holdings Co., Ltd. and a
visionary in the display
industry, is giving this
much-anticipated keynote.
Mr Yu will be outlining how the home
appliance industry has responded
to consumer demands for more
intelligent and user-friendly products
by creating intelligent, user-centric,
scenario-driven solutions. Hisense
has adopted this scenario-driven
approach across its entire product
lineup.
THE SHIFT IN CONSUMER
EXPECTATIONS
For Mr Yu, the priority is no longer just
manufacturing standalone gadgets;
it's creating intelligent, user-centric,
scenario-driven solutions. Hisense,
a leader in this transformative
journey, has seamlessly integrated
this approach across its offerings. At
the heart of this is their pioneering
technical system termed “Screens,
Operating System and Platform”
which offers a bespoke blend of
technology and experience.
MR YU: A VISIONARY
LEADER
Mr Yu’s vision for the future remains
clear and ambitious. His forwardthinking
approach is anchored in
user-centricity and scenario-based
innovation, ensuring Hisense remains
not only at the forefront of technology
but also at the heart of user experience.
His aspirations extend beyond mere
corporate success. Mr Yu is deeply
committed to harnessing technology
as a vehicle for societal betterment,
exemplifying the true essence of a
Siemens unveils its "Garden of Intelligence" blooming
with smart and sustainable appliances at IFA 2023
Smart appliances, intelligent design, connectivity and sustainability are key themes
at Siemens' IFA stand this year
"Artificial Intelligence is on everybody's lips," Michael
Mehnert, Managing Director at Siemens Home Appliances,
told the audience at the company's packed press conference
opening this year's IFA press days on Wednesday.
Siemens is showcasing the next
generation of smart home appliances at
IFA this year, under the motto "Gardens
of Intelligence". From AI in the kitchen
to XXL built-in fridges, attendees can
expect inspiring innovations, cooking
shows and talks at the company's
regular location in Hall 1.1.
Mr Mehnert told the audience that this
year's centrepiece is the Intelligent
Kitchen which encourages users to be
more sustainable, while enabling them
to optimise everyday tasks via new AI
technologies that can recognise their
preferences and adapt accordingly.
Flexible control can be achieved via
the Home Connect app or the Siemens
Smart Kitchen Dock which will be
put to the test during live cooking
demonstrations, Mr Mehnert said. "This
smart speaker is specifically designed
for the kitchen, featuring gesture and
voice control in case you have sticky
fingers," he added.
Other new products highlighted at the
conference include:
• The iQ700 oven with a new AIpowered
dish recognition system
that suggests the optimal preparation
method
• The iQ700 hob with new temperature
control, allowing to set the exact
temperature for optimising each dish
• The IQ 700 washer-dryer which
washes and dries up to 6kg of clothes
automatically in a single cycle
• XL and XXL built-in refrigerators with
special freshness zones that extend
the shelf life of fresh produce
Emphasising Siemens' commitment
to repairability and sustainability, Mr
Mehnert concluded his presentation by
announcing that the company is now
guaranteeing availability of spare parts
for its major appliances for 15 instead of
previously 10 years
Bosch offers a glimpse into
the sustainable home of the
future
As appliances become
increasingly smart and
connected, Bosch is using
that intelligence to support
sustainable lifestyles.
On Wednesday ahead of IFA 2023,
Robert Bosch Hausgeräte's Managing
Director, Andreas Diepold, and Head
of Marketing, Undine Lory, presented
Bosch's vision of a better, more
sustainable future at home.
With a focus on the kitchen and on
cleaning devices – from ovens, to
dishwashers, washing machines, and
floor cleaners – the company showcased
an impressive array of features that
reduce water usage, minimise food
waste, and even cook you the perfect
Sunday roast.
A highlight was the Bosch Green
Collection of fridge freezers. They
are made from "green steel" and biobased
plastic, reducing their carbon
footprint by 33% over standard models.
Additionally, the VitaFresh XXL system
includes two bottom drawers with
separate climate zones and moisture
control. The XXL section keeps fish
and meat (upper drawer), and fruit and
vegetables (lower) fresher for longer,
leading to less food waste.
Other devices such as the Series 8
washing machines work with Bosch's
Home Connect app to deliver the exact
amount of detergent, depending on the
type of detergent used and the weight
of the wash load, saving up to 40% of
water and 38% of detergent. Meanwhile,
the brand's Series 8 ovens can air
fry and steam cook at up to 120°C,
ensuring 54% more nutrient retention
in vegetables compared to boiling, while
cavity sensors can tell the user when
cakes, fish, poultry, or meat are done to
perfection.
Bosch registers about 4,000 patents a
year "of which 40% are directly linked
to sustainability", Diepold told the
audience. This figure underlines how
seriously the company takes its role in
making all its appliances greener. He
also said that Bosch now carries spare
parts for large appliances for 15 years
(up from 10) and for 10 years (up from
seven) for smaller devices in order to
support the concept of "repair rather
than replace"
and control centre, the HP7, at IFA Berlin 2023. Tailored
for larger homes, the device fully integrates the ideals
of smart home connectivity. In addition to providing
video intercom, the HP7 doubles as a comprehensive
smart home hub, simplifying the management of
various EZVIZ products. Its standout feature is the
internet-connected video intercom system, allowing
users to unlock doors via the EZVIZ App. Enhanced
with a 2K camera, it can discern moving people from
other objects, ensuring precise notifications
promising a discourse across consumer technologies and
architectural realms. Volker Ziegler, ICCE-Berlin's General
Chair, encourages IFA visitors to attend.
The journey from fundamental
sciences to off-the-shelf products
begins with the seeds of basic
sciences, which are then cultivated
through tools, management, and
units. These are further empowered
by services and systems, meticulously
shaped by human needs and desires.
The topics under discussion this year
are vast, ranging from the Internet of
Things, Edge Computing, and VR &
AR, to Automotive CE Applications,
Human-Machine Interaction,
Machine Learning, AI in CE, Smart
Cities, and beyond.
A MELTING POT OF
I CONFERENCES I
What’s stopping widespread EV adoption?
Tim Kenyon, Vice President, Consulting, GfK and a speaker at
the IFA Sustainability Forum tomorrow, takes us through some
of the research on this important topic. For more information,
make sure to attend his session.
According to Kenyon, the main obstacle
to electric vehicle (EV) usage continues
to be the high price tag, which has
been exacerbated in the minds of
consumers by recent inflationary
pressures. "In GfK’s sustainability
research EV expense is the number one
disadvantage cited by consumers," said
Kenyon.
One exception is China where
consumers are significantly less likely
to consider EV expense as a drawback
according to Kenyon. This was
attributed to the Chinese market seeing
price drops from domestic automakers.
Kenyon noted that a similar trend could
be expected in other countries as prices
drop and inflation eases.
Other barriers cited by consumers
include anxiety over the availability
of public charging stations, and long
charging times. As the market addresses
these points, Kenyon expects to see
increased adoption. "We have found
that one in two consumers cite 'limited
driving range' as a disadvantage of
electric vehicles," commented Kenyon.
"Germany, China, and the USA lead this.
A similar number of consumers also
cite the time required to charge as a
disadvantage, led by the UK, Germany,
and France."
Given these persistent views, a robust
educational campaign from automotive
manufacturers and government
partners, especially related to range,
would help. Consumers feel they need
more options when it comes to charging
stations, and that charging accessibility
is a definite challenge. "We see this
sentiment very clearly in GfK’s data,"
noted Kenyon. An important step in
"It is possible to tackle the
complex issues of our time by
taking a holistic view of our
corporate responsibility"
As Executive Director Human Resources, Internal Audit,
Corporate Communications, Sustainability & Regulatory
Affairs at Miele, Rebecca Steinhage wears a lot of hats. At IFA
2023, she will give the keynote at the Sustainability Forum this
afternoon.
improving charging access would be to
update building codes and regulations
to require new homes, commercial
developments, and related buildings to
be EV-ready, Kenyon explained.
Consumers see the potential in having
charging options in their homes. GfK
found "the ability to charge at home" to
be the third most appealing aspect of
electric vehicles, coming behind "money
saved on gas/petrol/fuel" and "doing
my part in preserving the environment"
CONFERENCES
The global consumer view on the
path to electrification: opportunities
and barriers
Date: 2 nd September 2023
Location: Hall 2.2
Sustainability Village
> 12:30 to 1:00 p.m.
What will you be highlighting in your
session?
I will be giving an overview of what
responsible business and sustainability
mean for a family-owned company like
Miele. I will discuss how a household
appliances company can contribute to a
better planet and share some thoughts
on the opportunities and challenges
that companies face, including the
shortage of skilled labour.
How important is sustainability right
now and how can companies balance
their economic, social, and ecological
activities?
Sustainability is key. Since the beginning
of the millennium, societies, economies,
and the earth itself have been subject
to increasingly frequent and severe
disruptions. Many disruptions have
overlapping consequences that can be
long-lasting and not fully understood
at the time of impact. But crises always
were, and still are, catalysts and
opportunities. Increasingly, the answer
to the challenges can be found in the
area of sustainability.
Who is the audience for your
conference?
Anyone who is driven by the vision of
creating a better quality of life through
sustainable and forward-looking
business. And, of course, anyone who
is passionate about sustainability
Tim Kenyon,
Vice President,
Consulting, GfK
and interested in what challenges
companies face.
What do you want the audience to
take away?
Three things. First, the conviction that
it is possible to tackle the complex
issues of our time by taking a holistic
view of our corporate responsibility.
Secondly, that sustainability can be
part of the answer to the challenges
that companies face, and thirdly, that
we must show courage to deal with
the questions of energy, resources, and
skilled employees
ADVERTORIAL
Navigating the electronics
landscape: a deep dive with
Karl Trautmann
Fabio Rifici
CEO and founder,
Microtech
Microtech:
Italian taste in the hypercompetitive
sector of
tech at IFA 2023
Microtech is an Italian OEM of notebook and tablets,
produced in Italy. The company has created a platform,
LudiX, to build “tailor-made” gaming PCs, allowing
distributors and retailers to compete in a huge market.
Harnessing the power of artificial
intelligence and machine learning,
LudiX offers over 5 trillion
combinations to design a Gaming
PC. LudiX can be completely
customised and is offered as “white
label” which really appeals to
distributors and retailers. Microtech
has partnered with Asus, Intel, MSI
and Nvidia, and the LudiX platform
can be embedded directly into the
retailer’s website. The end-user
customises their model, places their
order, Microtech assembles the PC
and delivers it to the home or store
for collection. LudiX can also be
offered to complement, in a sort of
SaaS mode, the industrial branch of
a retailer/producer.
Microtech was founded by Fabio
Rifici, a Sicilian professor of
literature with his heart in tech who
left teaching to create the company.
He explains the choice between the
name LudiX: “Ludix, is a combination
of the Latin word "ludus" which
means "game" and the letter "X",
which in computer science indicates
graphics. So "LudiX" is a word that
lives between past and future.”
LudiX frees consumers from having
to choose between the gaming
options retailers have in stock,
which could have been ordered
months earlier. According to Rifici,
“Thanks to our LudiX platform our
dealer customers always have the
most recent components available,
with a technological transition time
close to zero.”
Microtech is also looking into making
investments in the development
of smart vending machines where
consumers can configure their
PCs without requiring the help of
a sales assistant, making them as
independent as possible. Rifici
emphasises the close-knit, local
nature of the company despite being
in a sector as competitive as tech:
“We like to consider ourselves as
healthy bearers of good Italian taste
in terms of design and hardware.”
company has seen it all, from the rise of personal computers
to the advent of smart homes. At the heart of this journey is
Karl Trautmann, executive board member, who has dedicated
33 years to taking the company to the forefront of Consumer
and Home Appliance retail.
"I've been with ElectronicPartner for 33
years. As a board member, I oversee
international business, our international
association, E Square Press, public
relations, and strategic projects. It's
been a fulfilling journey, witnessing
the company's growth and navigating
through various industry shifts,"
Trautmann reflects.
In a world that's rapidly moving towards
disposability, ElectronicPartner is fully
committed to repair initiatives. Their
dedication to not only selling but also to
repairing appliances showcases a deeprooted
commitment to sustainability
and customer service.
"One of our strengths is our ability to
not only sell but also repair appliances.
We've been offering this service through
our centres for decades. Our motto has
been consistent: 'We repair everything,
regardless of where you bought it,'"
Trautmann emphasises.
The company's sustainability efforts
don't stop at repairs. They've taken a
holistic approach to green initiatives,
from infrastructure upgrades to
promoting eco-friendly commutes.
"We believe in setting realistic
sustainability goals. Our strategy
includes energy refurbishment of our
buildings, installing PV systems on
our logistics sites, and using railways
for travel within Germany. We've also
abolished company cars, with even
the executive board, including myself,
adopting eco-friendly commutes,"
Trautmann shares.
IFA Berlin, a cornerstone for the global
electronics industry, is more than just
a trade show for Trautmann. It's "a
I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
HONOR commits to making foldables
mainstream at IFA 2023
In an exclusive interview with IFA International, today's IFA opening
keynote speaker George Zhao, CEO of HONOR, reveals the company's
vision for the future
HONOR is "doubling down" on foldable smartphones which
it plans to send into the mainstream with innovations such
as its new HONOR Magic V2.
George Zhao spoke to IFA International
about the company's latest foldable
smartphone introduced at IFA,
outlining how the brand hopes to
provide a new era of innovation, and
transform the way we communicate
and express ourselves through
technology. We asked him to provide
some exclusive insights for our
readers...
HONOR's presence at IFA 2023
is eagerly anticipated. What
announcements can visitors expect
from HONOR at this year's show?
At IFA 2023, we are announcing our
commitment to making foldables
mainstream. This commitment is
underpinned by our focus on humancentric
smartphone innovations such
as the HONOR Magic V2, the world’s
thinnest and lightest book-style
foldable smartphone. Visitors can
get a taste of the zero-compromise,
revolutionary foldable experience at
our booth in hall 6.2. In demonstrating
our vision for future lifestyles, we
are also unveiling more exciting
achievements. We’ll have more to say
at the keynote, so stay tuned.
Can you tell us how HONOR intends
to provide a new era of innovation?
We anticipate seeing the most
disruptive innovations in the foldable
space, so we are doubling down on
this category. The HONOR Magic V2
perfectly exemplifies our vision. Our
next-generation foldable combines
excellent portability, battery life, and
durability to provide a premium user
experience that is superior to what
slate smartphones can give while
offering the option of a larger internal
screen for those who want a more
immersive experience. It will be a
catalyst for foldables to go mainstream
and herald a new era of innovation.
How do you envision foldable
smartphones transforming not
just the way we communicate but
also the way we express ourselves
through technology?
Consumers today want smartphones
that feature larger displays to keep
up with their appetite for content,
to the point that traditional slate
smartphones can no longer satisfy
consumer demand without significant
compromises in portability. Foldables
are the solution to this "user pain point".
On the other hand, consumers are also
seeking new ways for technology to be
integrated into their lives. We've been
exploring how technology impacts the
way people live their lives, and at this
IFA Opening Keynote, we will deliver
our answer.
How does HONOR work to design
products that are not only functional
but that consumers can really
identify with?
While quality and functionality are key,
we believe consumers are becoming
more sensitive to the impacts of their
shopping decisions, embracing values
such as inclusivity, sustainability, and
transparency. As a leading technology
company, we have the responsibility to
take these factors into consideration
and work towards a better future
by embracing more responsible
operations, products, manufacturing,
and partners.
How does HONOR manage to
consistently push the boundaries
of innovation while maintaining
a focus on user experience and
functionality?
With our human-centric focus,
innovation comes naturally to us. For
example, when we were designing the
HONOR Magic V2, we set out to create
a total evolution, not an iteration. We
approached every challenge from
a fresh angle, free from the limits
imposed by established knowledge
to surpass consumer expectations. In
trying to achieve the desired thinness,
we had to completely overhaul the
design multiple times, each time
experimenting with new materials
and manufacturing processes, before
finally arriving at where we are today.
It is our relentless focus to deliver the
best experiences to consumers that
drives us to continuously push the
envelope.
What do you think is the main priority
for consumers today? How does
HONOR take this into account when
designing products?
As a human-centric brand, HONOR
is committed to creating premium,
purpose-driven technology that offers
solutions to real-world problems in
order to enhance day-to-day life. Our
human-centric mindset also changes
the way we approach product design.
Instead of accepting trade-offs, we
deliver the best experiences with
zero compromises. When it comes
to smartphones, we are focused
on the camera, display, battery life,
performance, and privacy and security
features.
Why is IFA an important event for
HONOR? What are your main goals
at IFA this year?
IFA is the perfect platform to show our
consumers and partners that HONOR
is steadfast in our commitment to
bring foldables mainstream. We’re also
showcasing the HONOR Magic V2 for
the first time outside of mainland China.
The revolutionary experience it offers
will surpass any expectations one may
have for smartphones, and visitors can
experience it firsthand at our booth. As
a major international tech trade show,
IFA is also a fantastic opportunity for us
to unveil our latest achievements. Look
forward to our keynote announcement
to learn more about it
sustainability strategy is fully integrated
into our business strategy. In this context,
we aim to realise people-oriented
transformation in the entire value chain.
Our goal is to become a net zero company
by 2050 and to develop solutions that
To this end, we implement innovative
business models and adopt circular
economy practices.
I SPECIAL FEATURE I NOMADIC LIFESTYLE I
Nomadic lifestyle continues
to drive growth
Trends surrounding nomadic lifestyle are more relevant than ever with consumers
looking for ways to work, play and communicate wherever they wish
This is of course reflected at this year's IFA, where segments
like communication & connectivity, audio, computing &
gaming, fitness & digital health and mobility are thriving.
According to data provided by GfK, this quest for flexibility is
reflected in the equipment consumers are currently investing
in. Portable hardware that’s easy to carry and accessories
that allow for more flexible use are outperforming stationary
options significantly.
LIGHT AND FLEXIBLE IS
THE NAME OF THE GAME
FOR MOBILE PCS
In terms of mobile PCs for example,
ultra thin models with a height below 18
mm constantly increased their revenue
between 2019 and 2022. While they
have suffered a decrease in 2023, thin
and light models are widely used by
consumers around the world meaning
that they can positively impact their
surrounding ecosystem of accessories.
Such accessories are showing higher
growth rates driven by smaller and
more flexible devices.
CONTINUED INNOVATION
FOR MOBILE
HEADPHONES
According to GfK, mobile headphones
have returned to growth in 2023 with
a 4% increase. This increase is driven
by Bluetooth segments including In
Ear True Wireless (+1%) and Bluetooth
Headband (+31%). Innovative open ear
technologies such as open ear bone
conduction and air conduction could
contribute to further growth in future.
THE BLUETOOTH
REVOLUTION
Bluetooth is also increasingly
popular for keyboards and mice,
showing growth rates of 15% and
10% respectively in the first half of
2023 while corded segments have
decreased by 14% and 13%. GfK found
that consumers are looking for more
flexibility and the ability to work in
smaller spaces, which is contributing
to the ongoing success of smaller
keyboards, with tenkeyless products
growing by 11% while standard
keyboard form factors have declined
by 10%. This trend is supported by both
gaming and non-gaming consumers.
Mice have also seen growth in cordless
models as well as vertical mice
models which are designed for a more
ergonomic user experience and have
seen 33% growth in 2023 so far.
KEEPING AN EYE
ON FITNESS
Consumers are continuing to focus on
ergonomics, health, and fitness, which
has led to the growth of smartwatches
by 12%, continuing their growing
success over the last five years.
Devices enabling users to monitor their
health were the most successful in this
segment, with the ECG monitoring
feature growing by 20% and sensors
monitoring stress growing by 57%.
GfK's research is showing that
consumers want to be able to choose
where and how they work. They want to
be able to move around and find their
own work-life balance. This is leading
to lighter, more flexible solutions
such as adapted monitors, open ear
headphones, lighter portable devices
and much more. As nomadic lifestyle
options continue to drive growth,
there is lots of space for creativity and
innovation in the consumer electronics
and household appliances sector
I SPECIAL FEATURE I NOMADIC LIFESTYLE I
Shokz's OpenFit headphones use their patented
DirectPitch air conduction technology
Shokz offers adapted headphone
solutions for all different uses
Shokz’s revolutionary open-ear
technology at IFA 2023
Shokz, a leading brand in acoustics technology innovation, is especially
known for their developments in wireless bone conduction and openear
headphones. Their much-anticipated innovations are on display at
IFA this year
Founded in 2004 under the name AfterShokz, Shokz made
their debut in the headphone industry in 2011 when they
applied for their first open-ear technology patent. Shokz
released their first bone conduction headphones in 2012, and
they haven’t stopped innovating and improving since.
With continual adjustments and
improvements for users, from moving
towards firmly open-ear technology to
offering waterproof swimming listening
with OpenSwim and different sizes
for the OpenRun headphones, Shokz
has always been at the forefront of
the industry by listening to what users
fundamentally want. In 2021 the brand
underwent a name and logo change,
becoming the Shokz that users look to
and trust today.
Shokz has developed its reputation as an
ever-innovating brand and today they are
present in over 60 countries and regions
with over 7 million customers worldwide.
With over 2,800 patents applied for
globally and over 950 granted, they have
the most bone conduction patents of
any company in the world.
Shokz bone conduction headphones
really made a name for themselves
as the go-to brand for athletes. They
are perfect for exercising as they offer
a lightweight solution that won’t fall
out but allows you to be aware of your
surroundings for enhanced safety, for
example when running outdoors.
Shokz is unique in their approach to
the listening experience. While many
brands aim for complete noisecancelling
and providing an isolated
experience, Shokz gives users the
ability to immerse themselves in what
they’re listening to without being cut
off from the world. With Shokz you
really can have it all: an immersive
experience while remaining aware of
your surroundings and open to the
world around you. This is not only
a more pleasant and less isolating
experience, it is also a safer one. Shokz
believes in a vision of the future that
brings people together, and allows you
to keep your ears open so you can hear
what is going on around you.
Shokz’s latest development following
their internationally recognised bone
conduction technology harnesses the
power of air conduction technology
for even better sound. Their patented
technology, DirectPitch, used for
their OpenFit headphones, allows for
premium audio quality that perfectly
balances bold highs, clear mids and
surging bass. Shokz’s DirectPitch
technology uses reverse sound
waves to optimise the distance and
angle between the sound source and
the human ear, resulting in relatively
greater sound pressure toward the ear
and less sound pressure in directions
other than the ear canal. This allows
the listener to hear sounds clearly
without earbuds being in the ear, and
also has the advantage of reducing
sound leakage and ensuring privacy.
While bone conduction technology
works by conducting sound waves
through your bones, specifically
through your cheek bone, air
conduction uses a tiny directional
speaker to provide sound quality
equivalent to traditional headphones
without sealing off the user’s ears.
Shokz’s laboratory showed that bone
conduction headphones were more
suitable for professional sports contexts
due to their excellent water resistance,
while air conduction technology solves
the vibration and neckband problems
that can occur with bone conduction
headphones. This means that Shokz’s
OpenFit headphones, which harness
the power of DirectPitch air conduction,
are more suitable for daily wear in a
variety of lifestyle scenarios. Shokz
has developed both technologies
simultaneously, and they complement
each other today in Shokz’s two
flagship product lines.
Whether the headphones are used at
the office, for home entertainment, on
the go, for sports activities or even in
the pool, Shokz’s open-ear technology
offers adapted solutions that are
comfortable while providing quality
sound and "allow users to be aware of
their environment and the world around
them". Their headphones are designed
so users can actually wear them
comfortably all day without thinking
twice, according to the manufacturer
Aiper at IFA 2023:
"Bring Vacation Home"
with time-saving pool
cleaning robots
Aiper's pool-cleaning
robots allow you to
spend more time
enjoying your pool
The House of Robots is
bringing the future to
life at IFA 2023
Manually cleaning your pool can take a lot of time and energy.
That’s why Aiper invested in R&D to produce products that
merge technology with innovative design to create more
imaginative pool cleaning solutions. Best of all, Aiper robots
are cord- and hassle-free.
Expanding its portfolio of pool cleaning
products, Aiper debuts at IFA 2023 its
first cordless robotic pool skimmer,
the Surfer S1. Ridding pool surfaces of
debris, the Surfer S1 is a smart, solarpowered
robot that provides up to 10
hours of efficient surface cleaning.
Added features are available with the
accompanying free mobile app to
monitor performance, check battery
levels, receive alerts, and more. It is
customisable and you can choose
from two cleaning modes, including
automatic or remote cleaning, to
manually pilot the device via the app
to target elusive debris. In addition to
eco-friendly solar charging, the Surfer
S1 has magnetic charging in the event of
overcast skies. The Surfer S1 will launch
in Q1 2024.
Available now, Aiper will also show
its Seagull Series line of underwater
cleaners, including the award-winning
Seagull Pro and the Seagull Plus and
Seagull SE. For large pools, the Seagull
Pro is Aiper's most advanced pool
floor and wall cleaner with WavePath
navigation technology and the world’s
first quad-motor system. Optimised to
specifically clean pool floors, the Seagull
Plus is perfect for mid-sized pools, and
the Seagull SE is designed for smaller
pools.
Aiper does all the work so pool owners
can spend less time cleaning their pool
and more time enjoying swimming in
it. With the intent to “Bring Vacation
Home”, Aiper is inspiring pool owners
to embrace their vacation mentality by
turning their backyard into a personal
oasis with the help of products like the
Surfer S1 and the Seagull Series
