THE CHAIRMAN’S HELLO
BY LORRAINE DAVIS MBICSc
Sadly, this is my last article for The Standard that I write as the Chair of BICSc Council before
I pass the baton to my Deputy, Soo Bartholomew, in September.
Before I go, I want to answer an
important question that, as Chair,
I am frequently asked: “What is the
benefit of BICSc training, especially
as my own company has developed
its own training which is based
on BICSc?’’
The answer I always reply with
is: “BICSc Accredited training is
acknowledged worldwide as the
gold standard in cleaning training.
It is the accreditation that sets
it apart from all others because
you can have confidence that the
operative has understood and can
put into practice the lessons they
have been taught. It is also the only
practical cleaning qualification that
is accepted and has a value both
to the cleaning operative and their
current and future employer.”
BICSc Accredited training can
bring many benefits, including:
1. Improved job performance:
Accredited training provides
your cleaning operatives with the
knowledge and practical skills
they need to perform their duties
more efficiently and effectively.
2. Enhanced customer satisfaction:
Well-trained cleaning operatives
are better equipped to meet
the standards and expectations
of your customers, resulting in
increased satisfaction levels and
positive feedback.
3. Better safety practices:
Accredited training can provide
your cleaning operatives with the
necessary knowledge and skills
to perform cleaning tasks safely,
reducing the risk of accidents,
injuries and associated
insurance claims.
4. Compliance with
regulations and standards:
Accredited training ensures that
your cleaning operatives are
trained according to industry
standards, legal requirements,
and best practices.
5. Professional development:
Accredited training can help
your cleaning operatives
develop new skills and
knowledge that can help them
progress in their careers and
pursue new opportunities in
the cleaning industry.
If the above reasons are not
enough, I don’t know what is,
and to quote a Senior Operations
Director I worked with recently,
when I asked him that very
question, he said that nothing
gave him more peace of
mind than knowing his
client's cleaning contract/
property was in safe hands
when his teams onsite had
been BICSc trained. The
BICSc cleaning training is
excellent. However, I would
also encourage you to invest
in your supervisors' training
too. They are key to many
successful cleaning contracts
and this staff group are
routinely under invested in.
The BICSc Cleaning Supervisor's
Certificate is a fantastic
qualification and will equip your
supervisors to undertake a difficult
job better and prepare them to
be the contract and site managers
of tomorrow!
Anyway, it has been a pleasure and
a privilege to be your Chair for the
last four years and although I am
leaving the council, I am not leaving
the industry. I remain committed
to BICSc and BICSc training and
all the benefits it brings to our
cleaning teams and the buildings
and facilities they work in.
THE BICSc
BULLETIN
HELLO ALL!
WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN
EDITION OF THE STANDARD.
BY NEIL SPENCER-COOK
MBICSc
NEIL SPENCER-COOK
Group Managing Director
I hope you all had a good summer.
As I announced in the last edition
Stan has now stepped down
from his position and we hope to
celebrate with him at the BICSc
Awards on the 21st September.
I am now in position as the Group
MD of the Institute and there have
been a few changes in roles within
the existing team. Denise Hanson
has been promoted to Commercial
Director - we will continue to
utilise her technical knowledge
as part of this role. Sara Holt
has been promoted to Customer
Support Team Manager and Teresa
Sacco will back fill the role of
Team Leader. Kelsey Hargreaves
has been promoted to Technical
Specialist and Matthew Ferrin
has been promoted to Digital
Project Specialist. In addition to
these, Marion Wood has moved
roles and will be looking after our
communications and managing
our events.
In addition to the promotions, we
have strengthened our key teams
within the business, Matt Evans
has joined us as Digital Marketing
Assistant, to ensure we can keep
our digital presence up to date
and focus on more digital projects
for you all. Nicky Ellis has joined
the customer support team as
an Account Manager and Amelia
Amesbury has joined the technical
team to work on our ever-growing
portfolio of technical projects,
audits, etc., as the Assistant
Technical Specialist. They have all
brought a breath of fresh air into
the business and some new insights
are always good to consider.
I touched on the BICSc Awards
earlier and excitingly, we are in
the final throws of pulling it all
together. I must thank the team
who have worked tirelessly to pull
the event together. It's looking like
it should follow in the footsteps
of previous nights and be a highly
memorable event. If you are joining
us to celebrate BICSc excellence
in the industry, I look forward to
seeing you there.
There are lots of things we are
working on in the background and
in the next edition of The Standard
I will be letting you know what you
can expect from us in 2024.
Don’t forget if you have something
you think our members will
benefit from, please send it in to
marketing@bics.org.uk.
THE STANDARD
I HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS MONTH’S EDITION!

TIME
PASSES
QUICKLY!
BY DENISE
HANSON
FBICSc
Well, another quarter has slipped
by, I know I wrote about time
management in the last edition,
but I didn’t factor in the speed
at which time passes! I hope the
time has gone well for you, it has
been a very busy time here with
changes in roles and new starters
– exciting times lie ahead.
This quarter has seen training
trips to Ireland, KSA, Qatar, Abu
Dhabi and Dubai as well as lots
of virtual assessments. Whilst
this can prove challenging it does
mean that we are upholding
the standard of face-to-face
assessment for accreditation
that has always been one of the
keystones of BICSc training.
However, nothing remains the
same forever and with changes
in the BICSc management team
and staff, it seems only fair that
we look at the CPSS skills over the
next few months. It really doesn’t
seem like three years since their
last refresh but then when we
look at what those three years
have brought, maybe it is just my
grasp on the realities of time that
is faulty.
SO, WHAT HAVE THESE
YEARS BROUGHT IN?
1. CPSS Version 3 was issued
2. The launch of the BICSc
Assessor App, meaning that
we can update the skills
instantly once the team have
provided their findings and
recommendations – this is very
different from swopping out
manuals and an update from
the verifier at their annual visit
3. SOPs incorporated into the
Assessor App as well. We no
longer just tell the assessors
what a failure would be, we let
them know what good looks
like as well!
4. Training videos for the most
popular skills are available
free of charge for our ATMs to
enhance their training offering
5. Certificated free courses,
accessible to everyone were
launched via the BICSc virtual
training suite
6. The BICSc Cleaning & Hygiene
Audit App was launched with
free online training to support
its use
Now I know I will have missed things
in this list, things that I now take
for granted everyday that support
my role. I know looking at the
list, that without the support and
collaboration of the whole team, this
would not have been possible.
It will be exciting to see what the
next three years bring, even if the
very thought of a full CPSS review
has me rocking quietly in a corner...
BUSINESS
LEADERS
CALL FOR
COLLEAGUES TO
SUPPORT APPG
CAMPAIGN
Businesspeople from the cleaning
and hygiene sector have urged
industry colleagues to get behind
the British Cleaning Council-led
lobbying campaign to make cleaning
and hygiene a national priority.
Dave Wheadon, CEO of BCC
member the National Carpet
Cleaners Association (NCCA),
Billy Russell, owner of Billy Russell
Cleaning, and Angela Gill, MD of
Bio Productions Ltd, are among
those who have met and lobbied
MPs in support of the campaign.
David Garcia, Deputy Chair of
the BCC, has also met the Rt Hon
Andrea Leadsom, while Jim Melvin,
former Chairman of the BCC, has
also met the Rt Hon Grant Shapps.
The industry came together earlier
this year to call for sector staff
to help lobby MPs to have the
recommendations in the report
by the All-Party Parliamentary
Group (APPG) for the Cleaning
and Hygiene Industry, entitled
Embedding Effective Hygiene for
a Resilient UK, accepted in full.
Since then, individuals, businesses
and trade associations have been
downloading and adapting a prewritten
letter about the campaign
from the BCC website and emailing
it to their local MP.
Former BCC Chair Jim Melvin said:
“I want to say a very big thank
you to all those who have contacted
their MP in support of the
APPG report and our campaign.
“This is a hugely important
issue. We are one of the
biggest industries in the UK,
worth £59bn and with a vital,
frontline role in keeping people safe,
well and healthy, so it is time the
Government sat up and paid us
the attention we are due.
“We need cleaning and hygiene to be
a top priority in this country – it will
help save lives in the long run. So
please, if you haven’t already taken
part, give us your support, it is easy
to do.”
Mr Wheadon asked fellow NCCA
directors – including Billy Russell
– to give their backing to the
campaign, so Mr Russell wrote to his
local MP, the Rt Hon Jesse Norman.
Speaking after the meeting,
Mr Wheadon said it had been
a wide-ranging discussion on
industry issues.
He said: “We have to make sure they
don’t forget what our industry did
during the pandemic, we need to
maintain our voice and get behind
this campaign.”
Mr Russell said: “I don’t think a lot
of people understand what the
industry entails, but Jesse really
took it all on board and we gave
him a lot of information.
“The only way we will make this
succeed is by working together
as an industry. The more people
take part, the more likely this
campaign will work.”
Angela Gill, who is also a
Freeman with BCC member
the Worshipful Company of
Environmental Cleaners, met with
local MP Mims Davies.
She said: “The old adage that there’s
strength in numbers is true for
campaigns like these. The cleaning
industry plays a vital role to the lives
of everyday people as well as the
UK economy.
“It may not be the most attentiongrabbing
or headline-hitting
industry, but what we do matters
and hygiene saves lives. The more of
us who speak up and work together,
the more likely we are to succeed.”
The APPG report has been backed
by the British Cleaning Council and
21 associations from all across the
industry.
Its recommendations, if
implemented, would put cleaning
and hygiene at the heart of the
national agenda, making the nation
much more resilient to current
common infections and also much
better prepared for future public
health emergencies, like the
COVID-19 pandemic.
SAVE TIME AND MONEY
WITH MECHANICAL CLEANING
HOW i-mop AND co-botic 45
INCREASE YOUR PRODUCTIVITY
THE NECESSARY RISE OF
MECHANISATION IN THE
CLEANING INDUSTRY
Transforming manual into
mechanical floor cleaning because
of yesterday’s approaches to
cleaning just don’t cut it anymore.
Because of key industry trends such
as labour shortage and a high turn
over of staff the cleaning industry
evolves, technological advancements
continue like the usage of data
( i-link) to shape the way we approach
inefficient cleaning processes.
THE STANDARD
One of the most significant
developments in recent years has
been the rise of mechanisation.
This revolutionises traditional
cleaning methods. It adds data
tracking and sets new standards
for efficiency and effectiveness.
In this article, we delve into the
world of mechanisation and
highlight two innvative solutions
that are leading the way:
the patented i-mop technology
and co-botic 45 both running on
i-teams data platform i-link.
The cleaning industry has
traditionally relied on manual labour,
with cleaners using traditional
tools such as mops, brooms, and
vacuums. While these methods have
served us well, they often come
with limitations in terms of speed,
thoroughness, and productivity.
These methods are inefficient,
labour intensive, counterproductive,
wasteful and outright dangerous.
This is where mechanisation steps in,
offering a transformative approach
to cleaning. It is the answer for the
cleaning industry struggles to key
trends such as labour shortages
and the demand for enhanced
cleanliness and hygiene.

i-MOP: PATENTED
REVOLUTIONISING FLOOR
CLEANING TECHNOLOGY
The i-mop has emerged as a gamechanger
in the field of floor cleaning.
It saves the cleaner up to 60% of the
required cleaning time. Blending the
agility of a mop with the power of an
industrial-grade scrubber drier, the
i-mop delivers exceptional cleaning
performance. Its unique design
allows for easy maneuverability,
edge cleaning and hard to reach
places even in confined spaces,
while its robust brushes and
powerful suction ensure a thorough
and efficient clean on all floor
surfaces. The cleaner upgrades into
an operator or even better into a
hospitality host. With the i-mop,
cleaning professionals can achieve
remarkable results in less time
and can therefore significantly
enhance productivity and
customer satisfaction.
Did you know every i-mop every
day in use donates 18 liters of water
to the made blue foundation?
For more information: Made Blue -
our partner in clean drinking water
(i-teamglobal.com)
CO-BOTIC 45: ADVANCED
AUTOMATED CLEANING
Another groundbreaking
solution making waves in the
industry is the co-botic 45.
This advanced co-botic 45
machine works as a colleague
alongside the i-mop operator.
It combines artificial intelligence
and autonomous navigation to
provide unparalleled cleaning
capabilities. Equipped with
state-of-the-art sensors and
algorithms, the co-botic 45 can
navigate complex environments
with precision, avoiding obstacles
and ensuring thorough coverage.
With customisable cleaning
programs, it adapts to different
settings and surfaces, making it
a versatile and efficient cleaning
companion. The co-botic 45 frees
up valuable human resources
so the operator can spend their
time on other important cleaning
tasks. This frees the cleaner from
the unergonomic floor cleaning
job and guarantees consistent
and reliable cleaning
performance as well.
THE TRANSFORMATION OF
THE CLEANING INDUSTRY
Mechanisation brings numerous
advantages to the cleaning industry.
By automating repetitive tasks and
optimising cleaning processes, it allows
cleaners to focus on more important
activities. Moreover, mechanisation
improves the operator's wellbeing by
reducing physical strain and exposure to
potentially harmful substances. The cobotic
45 solves the most time-consuming,
repetitive and non-ergonomic task.
It’s evident that the cleaning industry
is evolving, and mechanisation is the
driving force behind this transformation.
With solutions like the i-mop and cobotic
45, we are witnessing a paradigm
shift in how we approach cleaning,
achieving unparalleled efficiency, and
raising the bar for excellence. i-team
Global has been at the forefront of this
mechanisation revolution. Empowering
cleaning professionals with cuttingedge
solutions is part of our DNA.
As technology continues to advance,
i-team Global is committed to driving
innovation and shaping the industry for
the better. Let’s embrace mechanisation
and unlock a new era of cleaning
possibilities.
THE BRIGHT FUTURE
OF BICSc:
A LOOK AHEAD
At BICSc we are always working
on improving our offerings to
members. Whether that be through
our membership benefits, training
courses or specialist services
like audits.
If you have been a member of BICSc
over the last few years, you will have
seen the great improvements that
we have implemented. Our apps,
online courses and general presence
has been worked on to help our
members get the most out of BICSc.
We thought it would be useful
to reveal some of the upcoming
projects we are working on to see
where we are heading over the
coming months.
CPSS APP UPDATES
We will be looking to push out an
update for our CPSS Assessor app
in the near future. We have loved
reading the feedback about how
useful you have all found the app.
And the benefit of not having to
complete the paperwork.
But with all projects, there will
always be room for us to improve.
So, we have also listened to
your feedback, and we hope this
update will address suggested
improvements and resolve any
problems encountered in the
previous release.
One of the most popular requests
which we are pleased to reveal will
be part of the update is the ability
to restart assessments if the
candidate fails without the need
to re-input the candidate details –
especially useful if the skill is LTP
as the registration form will not
need to be completed again.
Issues such as dark mode causing
function loss, and not being able
to close the notes section when
assessing a skill, will also be fixed in
this update.
There will be more features revealed
at a later date when we will visit
each of the upcoming changes.
THE UPCOMING REVIEW
OF CPSS VERSION 3
Whilst we are on the subject
of CPSS, are you aware we are
committed to reviewing the content
of CPSS every 3 years to ensure it
embraces changes in techniques
and technology whilst retaining
the efficient and effective
cleaning skills ethos?
All skills within CPSS will be
reviewed in the next couple of
months and any changes will be
widely publicised as they are
released so that you can be sure
you are always working on the
latest version.
Any changes from CPSS V3 will
automatically be pushed to the CPSS
App so we aim for this to be
a smooth transition for assessors.
More information on the rollout of
CPSS V3.1 will become available
nearer the time.
AUDIT APP
Many of you will have seen that
earlier in the year we released
a brand-new app. This app was
the BICSc Cleaning & Hygiene
Audit App.
The app, which enables anybody to
undertake a cleaning and hygiene
audit, has so far been successful,
providing useful reports for those
using it and leading to improvements
in overall building cleanliness.
We hope that those of you who have
downloaded and subscribed are
finding the app useful. And for those
of you who haven’t yet, take a look.
We focus on processes, systems,
paperwork, policies, areas included
in the cleaning specification, staff
behaviours and appearance, and the
standard of the equipment available
to the cleaning operatives. So, the
app is certainly applicable to your
business in one way or another!
VIRTUAL TRAINING SUITE
Our Virtual Training Suite
continues to grow in both content
and number of users – we now
have over 30 courses live on the
website. And with over 45,000
enrolments it is clear to see
members are enjoying this new
online format.
Making it easier than ever to train,
our Virtual Training Suite has gone
from strength to strength, and
we are now improving upon our
courses and adding extra training
detail where possible.
You may have seen that the recent
set of courses we have put live,
Rolled Skills, are combining multiple
skills into one assessment. This could
be music to the ears of many of you
who are struggling to fit training in
with your already busy schedules.
We have so far released four of
these courses with a fifth on the
way. We have split them into areas
such as washrooms and offices to
help you gain multiple skills in one
place. These skills follow a logical
process that a cleaning operative
would follow on a typical shift, so
these should feel more realistic.
There’s only one assessment for
all these skills too, so you’ll save a
lot more time than you would have
training these skills separately.
LTP – NEW VERSION
Licence to Practice (LTP) retains
its place as the go-to entry level
training course for cleaning
operatives. Along with the CPSS
review as mentioned earlier, which
will be applicable to both face-toface
and online training, we are
looking at taking a new approach
with the online course to enhance
the experience for the candidates.
The current course was one of our
first steps into the digital training
world and, as successful as it has
been, we feel the time is right to
refresh it to ensure it is as applicable
now as it was when first released.
We aim to add in extra training
details which will help with
assessment, whilst also making
the course, in general, more userfriendly.
This has prompted us to
see how we can do so. And so, later
this year we will be investigating the
possibility of having a trainer talk
you through the course, explaining
key points and giving the course
more life.
More will follow on these
developments, so check the BICSc
website for all the latest news.
PUTTING CLEANING PROFESSIONALS
IN THE SPOTLIGHT: CELEBRATING
EXPERTISE AND EXCELLENCE
It's time we turn our attention
to the remarkable individuals
who ensure our spaces shine, our
homes are safe havens, and our
lives are healthier - the cleaning
professionals. Scheduled for
the 14th and 15th of October at
ExCeL London, the Clean & Tidy
Home Show, under the vision
of its founder Penny Moyses,
seeks to cast a spotlight on why
this profession truly merits the
recognition it often lacks.
A clean environment isn't just
about appearances; it's about
fostering health and well-being.
By removing dirt, dust, and
allergens, it reduces the risk of
illnesses, promotes better indoor
air quality, and supports overall
well-being, creating a healthier
living environment for all. The
Clean & Tidy Home Show takes
this understanding to the next
level by advocating for cleaning
professionals. It's not just about
promoting cleanliness; it's about
highlighting the vital role of the
people behind the cleaning cloths.
The show will feature an array of
sessions dedicated to empowering
homeowners to make informed
decisions. This includes learning
how to find ethical cleaning
companies that value their staff,
ensuring that not only your space is
cared for, but the people providing
the care are too. One of the crucial
aspects covered in the show is
the training available for cleaning
professionals. Understanding the
scope of training ensures that
you're hiring skilled individuals
who can maintain your home, while
also upholding safety standards.
The show delves into the concept
that your home is more than just
a living space; it's an investment.
Just as one would care for financial
investments, nurturing your home
through regular cleaning and
maintenance ensures its longevity
and value. The sessions at the
Clean & Tidy Home Show offer
insights into effective cleaning
routines and techniques that
preserve the integrity of
your space.
In the landscape of modern living,
where dual-income households are
becoming the norm, the demand
for reliable and effective service
providers is paramount. The Clean
& Tidy Home Show acknowledges
this societal shift and presents
sessions that underscore the
benefits of hiring professionals
in the home.
You can expect to hear firsthand
accounts from cleaning business
owners. Through these interviews,
attendees gain insights into the
journey of these entrepreneurs
into the world of cleaning.
Discovering their stories provides
a glimpse into the passion that
fuels their commitment to this
profession. Their experiences
resonate with those who are drawn
to the industry, shedding light on
the opportunities it presents.
While the Clean & Tidy Home
Show welcomes all, it holds a
special place for BICSc members.
The British Institute of Cleaning
Science represents the epitome of
professionalism and expertise in
the cleaning industry. For BICSc
members, the show offers an
opportunity to connect, learn, and
celebrate the impact of their work
on both personal spaces and the
community at large.
The Clean & Tidy Home Show
shines a spotlight on the cleaning
profession, acknowledging
its pivotal role in our lives.
From raising awareness about
ethical cleaning practices to
offering insights into training
and maintenance, the show
encapsulates the holistic
importance of cleanliness. As the
show promotes the well-being of
both homes and the individuals
who care for them, it stands as a
platform where everyone is invited
to learn, celebrate, and appreciate
the remarkable world of cleaning
professionals.
Hope to see you there!
WELCOME,
MATT EVANS!
I have recently moved to the
area after completing my
undergraduate degree from the
University of Winchester and
currently studying for my masters
degree. I am looking forward to
settling into my new role here
at BICSc as Digital Marketing
Assistant, where I am hoping to
bring new and fresh ideas for the
social media pages and to the
Virtual Training Suite.
I am excited to work on the
upcoming 2023 BICSc Awards in
September, where I’ll be uploading
and managing our social media
accounts. Promoting the set-up,
our sponsors and announcing the
winners! Having never been to
such an event before, I’m sure the
whole experience will be eyeopening
for me.
Having worked in a healthcare
setting previously to this role, I
was surprised to learn about the
different cleaning techniques
and colour-coding for different
sectors of the industry. With BICSc
promoting its Licence to Practice
(LTP), I have already created
banners for the website focusing
on these and the new Rolled Skills
courses BICSc recently introduced.
Having already created banners
for our website and social media
profiles, I know the importance of
the membership plans we offer and
the different training courses we
provide.
During COVID, a lot of the training
courses have been moved online
such as the LTP, to reduce faceto-face
assessments but to keep
up training. This convenience
proved to be very beneficial for
our clients, especially for those
who are international and it’s
great to see how BICSc adapted
to the pandemic but was able to
maintain standards. This then led
to the Rolled Skills being released
where members can complete
multiple skills within one
assessment, reducing the time
needed for training, but again,
maintaining standards. These
assessments can take place at the
BICSc Training Suite, online or at
the company site.
Skills included in the Rolled Skills
follow a logical process, much
like the ones you would follow
on a typical shift. For example,
Rolled Skills 4, combines spray
cleaning hard floors (AU1) and
buffing hard floors (AU2). These
would be assessed together in one
go rather than separately. I hope
to build up my BICSc training CV
as my career progresses with the
company.
I have also completed the training
courses for our new BICSc
Cleaning & Hygiene Audit App
and our CPSS Assessor App
User Guide. These courses gave
me great insight into how the
company operates when auditing
and assessing individuals. They
also helped me understand what
I am going to be promoting for
the company when posting on
our social media pages and if we
update the app interface.
I look forward to progressing in my
digital design career with BICSc
and getting stuck into the work
they have for me. And I hope to
meet some of you at what looks
like an amazing awards event!
A SHOCK
TO THE SYSTEM!
When I was first trained in BICSc, I was trained face-to-face at my customer site.
I loved it! I loved the knowledge I gained, I loved the ‘time away’ I had from work,
I loved spending time with my colleagues in a learning environment, I loved the
interactiveness of the training. However, there were other things that I didn’t quite ‘love’;
I struggled with my workload on these days out training for full days, I struggled to ask
questions at times out of fear that colleagues may see me as ‘unknowledgeable’. When I began
to train and assess BICSc out on my site, I trained the way I was taught, face-to-face with me being left
in a toilet facility scrubbing away at limescale trying to remember all those key terms that had been taught to me.
When I started at BICSc, over two years ago, I was introduced to the revolutionary world of virtual training. Now,
I will be the first to admit that it went against my grain. “How am I going to get the same information I got out of
face-to-face training?” “How are the candidates going to enjoy the same shared experiences that I got to with my
fellow colleagues?” “How can you teach someone how to mop a floor by watching a video?”
Intrigued by this ‘revolutionary’
training I proceeded to enrol and
complete all of the virtual BICSc
skills that I could. I. Was. Sold. I
still enjoyed the time I had away
from ‘normal work’, but this time I
didn’t have 8 hours of catch-up to
complete, I could pause the course,
and come back when it suited me.
I was able to replay parts of the
course that I hadn’t quite grasped
first time round without the fear of
eye rolls or silent judgement from
more experienced candidates in the
room, and it felt like the trainer was
in the room with me as I sat with
my cup of tea biscuits watching a
god send of a BICSc employee scrub
away at limescale and tell me all of
the bits and bobs that would help
me. After a few months of being at
BICSc, I had my first trip out to a
site that had been trained fully
online, with me conducting the
face-to-face training of the BICSc
Assessor Course.
The same doubt washed over me:
“What am I going to walk into here?”
I walked into a cleaning cupboard
mirrored on what was shown in the
BICSc training videos, I watched
candidates efficiently and uniformly
complete BICSc skills like they
had had the skills ingrained in
their DNA and a listened to BICSc
terminology that was explained
to me so perfectly that I was
convinced at one point a candidate
was lip syncing to the BICSc videos!
Consider me ‘gobsmacked’!
I knew the value that this training
had already, but watching
candidates on the other side
of the world enjoying the same
benefits gave me a confidence in
this innovation that I initially didn’t
expect to have.
Well, you know what they say:
surprises are the greatest gifts in
life! I have seen time and time again
how effective online training is for
every candidate we can expect to
train, and it turns out some of our
amazing BICSc Assessors around
the world think the same thing!
“The videos support the ‘Demonstration and
Repetition’ training. The narration is delivered
at a steady pace and the feedback we have
received is that they are easily digestible in
our training groups.”
(Gary Bradford-Mathews,
2gether Support Solutions)
“People will take in more by watching
video, appose to watching an
assessor demonstrate.”
(Tina Memory, London
Borough of Hounslow)
“Online BICSc Training Video are
essentials for the candidates learning,
as they [candidates] may not
understand much of the language but
seeing an actual demonstration will
mark on their mind on how to properly
do the skills”
(Jutiresa Cabasal, Khansaheb FM)
And after 40,000 + candidates have
enrolled into the virtual training
suite, a shock to the system has been
welcomed by many! It turns out, you
can get the same information that
you do out of face-to-face training.
Plus the experience of BICSc training
is shared and as our enrolment
numbers continue to grow at a rapid
pace, can be enjoyed collectively by
many all around the world.
It turns out, the same way Gordon
Ramsay can teach me how to make
a mean beef wellington through
a TV cooking show, you can teach
someone how to correctly mop a
floor through a Virtual Training
Suite and video demonstration, but
we have something Gordon doesn’t,
an assessment process to
guarantee you have learned
what we taught you.
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
There is a common saying that there
is no “I” in team, and I would like to
add to this with “but a team does
contain me”. For it is my belief that
a team with consciously committed
members will always achieve much
more than a group of individuals.
Teams are everywhere you look.
They are internal, external, in
business, in leisure and in family
life. But to be effective they need to
have an open and honest approach
to their goals; the team need to be
aware of the goals and what the
measurement of success looks like.
To put it simply, good communication
is key!
If you look at how BICSc suggests
a centre is run, you can see the
team ethos running through the
recommendations we make.
For example, we recommend that
the trainer and assessor are not the
same person – this helps to keep the
process of an accredited standard.
Whilst in the past the locations of
sites may have rendered optimum
teamwork difficult, the production
and availability of the training videos
can now mean this is more easily
achievable. This means accredited
trainers and assessors need to have
a plan and work in collaboration to
achieve their goals – as a team.
Where we organise online
assessments, we suggest pairing
the candidates so that they book
a double assessment and can then
hold the phone or tablet for each
other – work as a team.
SU2 is a skill which is impossible
without a team as the key
to preventing the spread of
contamination is to have the
go-between working in the clean
area to support their colleague/s
who are making the contaminated
area safe. Ultimately, a highly
collaborative process.
BICSc has recently expanded some
of its internal teams, which means a
change in structure, responsibility,
and role. It has been a busy month
with three new team members
joining us, establishing who their
new colleagues are and learning
the ropes as part of their roles
within BICSc.
As we are experiencing now,
teams flex and change and the
people who make up the team
can vary and adapt as the workflow
demands. The key to a successful
team though, is to be willing to share
knowledge, upskill colleagues and be
open and honest in our own strengths
and weaknesses.
One of my new challenges will
be to engage with other industry
bodies, working in collaboration
and strengthening our offering to
market. Hopefully I can help to build
a network to support our members
and theirs, strengthening the team
as a whole.
So please do have a look at your
team. Ask yourself if is it running
smoothly. Does it achieve or exceed
all its targets? Does it welcome and
upskill new staff to become valued
team members? If the answer to
all these questions is yes, then
teamwork is definitely working
for you.
As for me – I’m very grateful to be
part of team BICSc and I hope that
the support of our team can help
your training and assessment teams
achieve all that they need to for your
business needs.
SHINING A
SPOTLIGHT ON…
NATALIA
BY KELSEY HARGREAVES
In late May, at a BICSc all-staff
meeting, Maureen Kelso, Senior
Verifier, came running up me,
full of excitement about Natalia,
an amazing Assessor she had
met at an ATM reapproval at
Amazon. Maureen continuously
praised Natalia for her work and
the ways in which she cared for
the development of the cleaning
operatives at the centre. Two
minutes into my interview with
Natalia, I knew exactly what
Maureen meant.
In 2014, Natalia joined Mitie as a
cleaning operative simply because
it fit around her personal life
and she wanted a new challenge.
She joined the company with no
cleaning knowledge or experience
but with a thirst to learn everything
she could! A year later, Nat was
promoted to Supervisor and this is
where she was able to start sharing
the knowledge she had accrued
through her time.
Nat started by training her
team systematically through
everything they needed to know
and everything they may want
to know. She called this the “A
to Z” of cleaning. She wanted to
ensure that her team all followed a
standardised method for cleaning
and along the way taught herself
from Mitie training models, how to
teach her staff how to understand
compliance related documentation
and best practice. Nat remarked
at how much this was a pivotal
moment in her career, watching the
development of her team:
“I was so happy, they understand
it; they do it, they keep themselves
and other’s safe! Do you know how
proud that makes you?”
In more recent years, Nat has
been a Manager Assistant, helped
with mobilisations and is now
working as a Business Support
Officer within the central team,
where she is able to best support
the teams out on the Amazon site
and show them their worth! After
discussions within the central team
of how to continue best practice
on their Amazon contract, the
team decided to introduce BICSc
training. In April 2022, Nat was
accredited as a BICSc Licensed
Assessor, it was clear by Nat’s
smile on her face how proud
she was of this achievement!
(and rightly so).
Natalia, like so many other
amazing assessors we have
at the Institute really is the
epitome of the BICSc mission:
To raise the status and standards
of the cleaning industry, through
education and accredited
training thereby;
PROTECTING THE OPERATIVE
PROVIDING A CLEAN AND
SAFE ENVIRONMENT
PRESERVING ASSETS
PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY
PRODUCING BEST PRACTICE
Throughout my chat with Nat, she
kept talking about keeping people
safe, letting operatives know
their worth and their talent while
improving the service level for the
client through the best methods
they can adopt. In the future
months and years, Natalia looks
forward to accrediting all of the
900 candidates in CPSS skills!
A big job, but we are sure she
will be amazing!
Thank you Nat for your passion and
dedication to your Mitie colleagues
and for being a fantastic guardian
of the Institute's standards! We
can’t wait to see you and your team
receive the accreditations you
deserve!
PRIVATE HEALTHCARE
IS PEACE OF MIND
No matter how fit and healthy we
are, it is inevitable that at some
point in our lives we will fall ill and
need medical care. And when illness
does strike it is to the NHS that
most people will turn in seeking a
diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
The NHS has for some years been
showing signs that it, too, is not in
the best of health. A growing and
ageing population is putting an
ever-increasing strain on staff and
services. A problem exacerbated by
the coronavirus pandemic.
Reports of underfunding, a
shortage of medical staff, noisy
and overcrowded wards, cancelled
operations and long waiting times
will be familiar to everyone.
In England, hospital waiting lists are
longer than ever before, with a total
waiting list of 7.3 million people.*
This is the highest number since
records began and illustrates the
severe pressure that the
NHS is under.
QUICK, PRIVATE
AND CONVENIENT
Understandably, these lengthy
delays are causing additional
stress for patients, undermining
their health and quality of life even
further. How many people do you
know whose physical health
and mental well-being has
deteriorated from the anxiety
of having to wait months for a
hospital appointment?
All this can be avoided by taking
out private health insurance.
Seeing a doctor in private practice
used to be only for the wealthy, but
not anymore as the cost of private
medical cover is becoming
more affordable.
A private medical plan delivers
prompt access to hospital
consultants, thus avoiding lengthy
waiting lists. Patients can choose
from an extensive list of hospitals
throughout the UK; if they need to
be admitted, they will have their own
private room equipped with TV and
telephone, and visiting is arranged
to suit patient and family. A quick,
private and convenient service
that removes many of the anxieties
associated with NHS hospital stays.
TAKING CONTROL
OF YOUR HEALTHCARE
However, those interested in taking
out health insurance should not
leave it too late. As we get older
our healthcare needs increase.
Therefore, as only some of the best
health insurance companies provide
cover for pre-existing conditions, the
best time to invest in getting private
treatment for illnesses you may
suffer tomorrow –
is today.
By acting now you can ensure
your future healthcare will not be
dictated by NHS bureaucracy and,
just as importantly, you will be
able to benefit from the widest
possible cover.
Private health insurance cannot
guarantee good health, but it can
ensure that when you are feeling
unwell you will quickly receive the
best possible care, when and where
you want it. The peace of mind
that comes with that knowledge
cannot be underestimated and is
often the most important factor
for people deciding to take control
of their healthcare provision and
"go private".
HOW AVOIDING
GREENWASHING CAN
STRENGTHEN YOUR
BRAND POSITION
Greenwashing has become more
widespread than ever. In 2021
alone, 42% of green claims were
exaggerated, false, or deceptive.
Greenwashing can be defined as
actions by companies to make
people believe that your company
is doing more to protect the
environment than it is.
As global efforts to halt climate
change accelerate, so have efforts
to crack down on greenwashing.
Tighter legislation has been
introduced, such as the EU Law,
and hefty fines have been imposed
on some of the world’s biggest
brands to deter organisations
from this deceptive method of
communication. Greenwashing
can have an adverse effect on your
organisation’s brand reputation,
reducing consumer confidence and
purchase intent.
We sat down with Planet
Mark’s Head of Strategy and
Communications, Zoë Lee, to
discuss how your organisation
can strengthen its brand position
by avoiding greenwashing and
effectively communicating your
sustainability journey.
GREENWASHING DAMAGES
A BRAND’S REPUTATION
Aside from being ethically unsound,
one of the biggest problems
with greenwashing is that it
fundamentally damages your brand
reputation by creating distrust
and tarnishing key relationships
with stakeholders.
A RELATIONSHIP
THAT LACKS TRUST
Greenwashing undermines the
credibility of an organisation.
False claims revealed to be untrue
will stick to your organisation’s
digital footprint creating negative
brand perception. Contrary to the
saying, not all press is good press,
the negative brand perception
associated with your organisation
may alter consumer behaviour –
a recent study highlighted 81%
of consumers research a brand
before making a purchase.
This weakened brand perception
“It can falsely cast doubt on other
claims that you’ve made that
are potentially accurate and can
ultimately erode consumer trust
and confidence in your organisation”,
said Zoë Lee.
THE MORAL COMPASS
It goes without saying that
your organisation should avoid
greenwashing because it’s
fundamentally wrong, misleading
and unethical. When your
organisation releases deceptive
messaging, it only adds to the
“negative haze of misleading
information” and ultimately
damages the impact of truly
good action.
“Consumers, clients and investors
are thinking more ethically,”
said Zoë Lee. As a result, your
organisation will be held
accountable for acting unethically.
COMMUNICATING CREDIBLY –
THE KEY TO STRENGTHENING
YOUR BRAND POSITION AND
AVOIDING GREENWASHING
Credibly communicating your
sustainability journey has the
opposite effect on an organisation’s
brand position. Your organisation can
build trust and “help lead by example”
by telling your sustainability story
with accuracy and honesty which
helps present “clear, transparent
and robust messaging to your
stakeholders”. Communicating your
sustainability story substantiated by
data and fact is in your organisation’s
best interest to help stakeholders
make better-informed decisions and
build advocacy.
Accurate messaging can also help
your organisation attract and retain
the best talent. “We are finding that
brands that embed sustainability
into their strategy, marketing and
messaging are generally better able
to attract and retain talent,” said Zoë
Lee. Similar to consumer confidence,
individuals are looking to work for
brands that are authentic and accurate
in their messaging. For example,
according to Forbes, 79% of millennial
employees are loyal to companies that
care about their effect on society and
will increasingly favour employers
with progressive Environmental,
Social Governance (ESG) credentials.
With better-informed stakeholders,
now is the time for your organisation
to share its sustainability efforts with
confidence and credibility.
THE STANDARD

HOW CAN ORGANISATIONS
COMMUNICATE CREDIBLY?
PROGRESS BACKED BY DATA
Companies can avoid greenwashing
by ensuring their sustainability
claims are fact-checked and
third-party verified to remove
any bias. Planet Mark’s thirdparty
verification can help your
organisation demonstrate its
sustainability credentials with
accuracy and confidence. Backed
by data, we help organisations
measure their carbon footprint,
engage their employees and
stakeholders, and communicate
their efforts effectively.
Our certificates are external facing,
providing your stakeholders with a
holistic view of your sustainability
efforts. Our certificates
include your organisation's
carbon footprint, year on year
reductions, how many sustainable
development goals you have
contributed to and more.
ALIGNMENT WITH
REPUTABLE BRANDS
Aligning sustainability efforts
with global and national targets,
frameworks, and standards
puts organisations in the best
position to ensure they’re doing
good. Planet Mark’s services
are all underpinned with clear,
well-established and reputable
sustainability frameworks. For
example, our Business Certification
is aligned with GHG protocol, and
our Net Zero Programme is aligned
with the Science-Based Targets
Initiative (SBTi). Our services
help secure confidence that your
sustainability efforts are truly
impactful and aligned with the
current frameworks.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH
TO COMMUNICATING
YOUR SUSTAINABILITY
Stakeholders appreciate
organisations who don’t just tell
their story but show their story.
Accessibility to your data is crucial
to avoiding greenwashing and
growing consumer confidence.
Planet Mark takes a holistic
approach to communicating your
organisation’s sustainability.
Through our certificates, which
are external facing, stakeholders
can see an organisation's year
on year reductions, how many
sustainable development goals
your organisation has contributed
to and more. Similarly, our
communication experts can help to
bring your organisation's
data to life to ensure your
external messaging is engaging
and accurate.
SANCTUARY SUPPORTED LIVING
SWITCH UP CLEANING SOLUTIONS
AND REAP PRODUCTIVITY AND
SUSTAINABILITY REWARDS
As businesses continue to look for
ways to become more sustainable
while controlling costs, Sanctuary
Supported Living have found that
simply upgrading to better cleaning
tools can make a tangible difference
to both commercial costs and
environmental impact. By swapping
their cleaning tools in partnership
with manufacturer Rubbermaid
Commercial Products (RCP), the UKbased
care organisation have been
able to make significant efficiency
improvements that allow them to
clean more and to a higher standard
in less time, while also reducing
their ecological impact, explains Ben
Clibbery, RCP’s Sales Manager UK &
Ireland – Business Development.
By introducing a more cohesive
approach to cleaning with better tools
for the job, Sanctuary were able to cut
cleaning time by 45% and save 180,000
litres of water at one site alone. How
could your business do the same?
ACHIEVING IMPROVED
SUSTAINABILITY
Sanctuary Supported Living’s homes
are underpinned by a rigorous
cleaning schedule that allows them
to keep both staff and residents safe.
But with 650 sites across the country,
all with various areas to tackle and
differing needs, they needed a better
cleaning solution that allowed them
to save time and money, and reduce
the environmental impact of their
business operations.
To review the impact of introducing
the new products and processes,
the team worked closely with RCP
to carry out a time and motion study
so they could properly review the
effect of switching to an integrated
set of cleaning materials. Through the
adoption of the new cleaning tools, the
team calculated significant reduction
in their environmental impact.
Comparisons between the previous
cleaning equipment and RCP’s
Pulse Mop System reveal the site
will save approximately 400kg in
mop heads that would otherwise
be going to landfill, approximately
180,000 litres of water and hundreds
of pounds in electricity costs.
Further cost and resource reductions
came with the introduction of
HYGEN Microfibre Cloths as a
result of the high number of washes
they can endure before requiring
replacement. These significant strides
in terms of environmental credentials
were considered to be a real success
by the Sanctuary team and are a real
proof point of the ‘buy better, waste
less’ approach.
DRIVING CLEANING
EFFICIENCY AND
EFFECTIVENESS
The team reported saving 55 minutes
on a clean that previously took 107
minutes, a staggering saving of 45%.
What’s more, the uplift in products
also expanded the cleaning tasks
the team could complete and how
safely they could undertake them.
The switch from inflexible products
and ad-hoc tools has crucially
meant a significant improvement
in the cleaning experience for staff,
meaning they aren’t required to
contort or elevate themselves to
ensure thorough cleaning. This has
led to a reduction in physical stress
and fatigue which in turn increased
cleaning time.
SAVINGS ACROSS MULTIPLE
BUSINESS AREAS
Housing Team Leader, Dawn
Moreton, has been thrilled with the
time, cost and environmental savings:
“Firstly, we can do more cleaning to a
higher standard in less time with less
ecological impact, thanks in part to
BEN CLIBBERY
RCP’s Sales Manager
UK & Ireland –
Business Development
Rubbermaid
products like the Pulse Mop System
eliminating the need for a large
bucket of water to be carried around
as well.
“Secondly, safety improvements from
using products like the High Level
Duster that reaches telescopically
while a cleaner can keep their feet
on the ground, or a microfibre cover
on a flexible head means the tool can
twist and turn, rather than our staff
having to, reduces physical strain or
potential musculoskeletal problems.
As well as the reduced fatigue that
comes from using a lighter cart and
removing heavy buckets water.
“Finally, the savings have been
noticeable. There are the financial
savings that come from durable
products that need less replacement,
and there’s a saving in time that comes
from the efficiency RCP’s setup has
given us and there’s a sustainability
saving, where we’re using fewer
products and resources, meaning less
is taken from the planet.”
environmental considerations are
eradicated. Every time you use ICE
AquaSmart you are reducing chemical
usage, increasing cleaning efficiency,
and helping to save the planet!
NON-STOP CLEANING
A number of scrubber dryers in
our range have advance filtration
systems to increase water recycling
during operation. This results in
enhanced productivity from reduced
emptying and re-filling frequencies,
and a water saving of up to 60-70%.
This technology is included in our
MTech, Non-Stop Cleaning, and Co-
Botics equipment.
We continuously review our
product range, and the benefits
and opportunities they offer our
customers, in order to be able to
fulfil a complete solution. It’s this
investment in the key technology
advances, both in equipment
hardware and virtual know how that
help us support our customers.
We are excited to introduce a
host of new products for 2023,
including the Willmop – a compact,
vertical scrubber dryer perfect for
hospitality, healthcare, retail, and
fitness environments, amongst many
others. Its small footprint allows
easy cleaning in difficult areas such
as corners and edges, while the
bumper wheels protect furniture
and walls. With full 360° movement,
the Willmop is self-standing, so
it doesn’t fall when the operator
releases the handle. Equipped with
lithium-ion battery technology for
long run-times and quick charging,
the Willmop is versatile, userfriendly,
and reduces down-time.
The Willmop is available in two
sizes (35cm and 50cm) and comes
with a range of optional trolley
enhancements for transportation
and storage. Click here to see the
Willmop in action!
Also new this year is our recently
launched Battery Vacuum range
which is ideal for compact cordless
cleaning and includes a tub vac,
upright vac, backpack vac, and wet/
dry vac. The cordless technology
and cable-free flexibility of these
machines enhance user-experience
and minimize down-time.
We also have a new addition to
our ICE Co-Botics family – the
Phantas - a compact 4-in-1 robotic
machine that sweeps, vacuums,
scrubs, and dries! The Phantas is a
small machine with a 33 cm cleaning
width that literally cleans right up
to edges and corners, guaranteeing
complete coverage. It is highly
efficient and can clean effectively
in tight spaces, narrow aisles and
even under tables! The Phantas can
also be remotely managed via an
App, which includes remote control
of the machine; activate, pause, or
stop a cleaning task; or schedule the
cleaning start time. Detailed reports
are also available through the App
that show the area cleaned, water
used and remaining, and battery and
consumable life remaining. It is also
supplied with a charge station that
the Phantas will automatically return
to once the battery is low.
Also launching this year is our
new fully electric outdoor Urban
range which further supports our
environmental & sustainability
pledge. These machines are street
sweepers designed for cleaning city
centre streets and collecting waste.
Further information about our 100%
electric Urban machines will be
available on our website shortly.
