The Word on the Street
As some youngsters head
to school for the first time,
Haddonfield Friends School will
celebrate more than 235 years of
Tradition and Transformation.
haddonfield.today | 3
Tell us about a memory of
your first day of Kindergarten,
or of your early school years.
Haddonfield’s
KRISTIN TROPEA
loved the excitement
of shopping for
school supplies. “And
ensuring that the
color of the bow in
my hair matched
my dress. That
was a big deal in
Kindergarten.”
MICHELLE HUGHES
of Burlington says she
really enjoyed “doing
a sticker alphabet”
on postcards: “One
letter a week for what
seemed like the entire
school year.”
The fondest memory
for JEFF HAMMON
of Haddonfield is
“heading out to the
playground at lunch
time to play sports
with my friends.”
Jeff says he doesn’t
remember much
about class time.
Boston’s KAITLIN
HAMMON has fond
memories of “sitting
cross-legged on my
dot”for Circle Time.
“In those days, it
was just fun,” she
says. “Today, it’s
Structured Activity.’”
At Friends School,
ANDY JOHNSON
got to sit in the
“special” Windsor
chair “because I was
the best-behaved
student the day
before.” Somehow,
one of Andy’s arms
got stuck between
two spindles, “and
the custodian had
come and cut me
out with a saw.”
“I have no memory
of my first day of
Kindergarten,”
says NATALIE
MORGENSTERN of
Haddonfield, “but I
really enjoyed art and
music in the early
years.” Natalie says “I
wasn’t much of a cello
player, but I became a
very good knitter at a
very young age.”

New playground at Tatem
› The Tatem Elementary School PTA reports that after three years of planning
and fundraising efforts, its Tiny Tiger Playground project is nearly complete.
A ribbon-cutting has been scheduled for Fri Sep 8 at 3:15pm, following the
first Friday of the new school year. All Tatem supporters are invited to attend
the celebration.
With input from students, teachers, specialists, and community members,
the new playground features Kompan equipment that is suitable for the entire
Tatem student body.
The Tatem PTA funded this endeavor through grants from The Haddonfield
Foundation and the Rotary Club of Haddonfield, along with proceeds from
annual events and generous donations from families and local businesses. It
was truly a community effort. The PTA hopes that all who contributed will join
them to help spread their message of gratitude to all of Haddonfield.

the Rotary Club will
host a Christmas Tree
Learn about girls’ experiences
› In June, five students from Memorial High School – rising juniors – attended
the Girls’ Career Institute at Douglass Residential College on the Rutgers
University campus in New Brunswick.
During their “mini college experience” they networked with other delegates
from throughout New Jersey, learned about career choices, and sampled
college life by living in a dorm and attending lectures and workshops.
The students who participated will discuss their experiences during a
meeting of The Haddon Fortnightly’s Evening Membership Department at
7:30pm on Tue Sep 12.
The students’ presentations will be followed by an EMD business meeting
and refreshments. All are welcome. Registration is not required.
› Buntzie Churchill, Haddonfield resident and former longtime president of the
World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, will be the Public Library’s guest speaker
China appears to be bracing for confrontation, while we appear to be not very
well prepared, even for our own defense.
History of Black settlements
› South Jersey once had more than 100 enclaves
of free Blacks in self-sustaining towns or smaller
communities. Many emerged from stops on the
Underground Railroad, often with support from
local Quaker meeting houses.
Over the years a few of these, such as
Lawnside, managed to maintain an independent
identity. Others – Saddlertown and Timbuctoo in
Westampton, for example – have benefited from
study and efforts to bring their history to light.
Most, though, are threatened with extinction from
memory, unknown even to most who live within
their boundaries.
Milford, later known as Kresson, is one such place
whose story is threatened, a fate that historian Paul
Schopp has long fought to prevent.
In the 19th century, the community along the
border of Evesham and Voorhees Townships (near
where Kresson Road meets Route 73) became a
place of refuge for Blacks fleeing slavery in the
South and other free Blacks looking for land and
work to make a living. Josiah Evans of Haddonfield’s
Evans Mill, who resided at the area now known as
Croft Farm, is just one of the historical figures who
had ties to Milford and the Underground Railroad.
Paul Schopp will discuss the history of Milford
at the Lutheran Church on Wed Sep 20 at 7pm,
sponsored by the Historical Society.

Friends School fundraiser for the future
› When Haddonfield Friends School was built in 1786, it was the town’s first
school. It has been in continuous operation ever since.
Today, the historic building and school community are a vital part of the
wider community and, because of the site’s proximity to Kings Hwy, of the
fabric of the downtown. While preserving beloved traditions, the school is
forward-thinking and is committed to seeking innovative ways to meet the
evolving and dynamic needs of students, families, teachers, and alumni. It has a
vision that will help define and ensure the next chapter at Haddonfield Friends.
That next chapter will begin with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to
preserve the 1786 building and ensure it will meet – and exceed – the needs of
future students and residents.
Haddonfield Friends School has been awarded a $725,000 matching grant
from the New Jersey Historic Trust for restoration of the original school
building. The grant and the matching funds raised will be used to enhance
the learning environment, make historically appropriate improvements and
repairs, establish environmental stewardship projects on the school grounds,
and improve accessibility.
It’s a big project, and members of the school community are thinking big in
their determination to meet the challenge. One of the first steps is to invite all
who share their love for the school, its historic building, and its grounds to a
Tradition & Transformation cocktail reception at Tavistock Country Club on
Thu Sep 14 from 6:30pm.
In addition to regular tickets for the event, at $250 per person, various
levels of sponsorship are available. So too is founding membership of the 1786
Society (which includes two tickets to the event and other yearly benefits).
Tickets may be purchased at HaddonfieldEvents.com. That site may also be
used to sign on to be a sponsor of the event, or to make a matching donation to
the Tradition & Transformation fund generally. Donations are tax-deductible.
New exhibit at the Markeim
› The opening reception for The Art of Joey Rihl &
Jay Miller will take place at the Markeim Arts Center
on Sun Sep 10 from 11am to 1pm.
All are invited to see “a stunning, bold show sure
to leave an impression.” And to enjoy a Sunday
brunch from the kitchen of Rosie Hymerling, a
Markeim board member.
Joey Rihl grew up in Haddonfield and volunteered
at the Markeim in his youth. He has trained in
classical realism for years, and has studied at Studio
Incamminati, Philadelphia. He finds the inspiration
for his works in history, literature, theatre, and
classic film. Joey creates his art using oil paints and
graphite/ink on paper. He lives in Merchantville.
Jay Miller’s background includes studying at the
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, practicing as
a full-time painter, and working in the graphic arts
industry. Much of Jay’s work – in acrylics and mixed
media – expresses the dynamic tension that exists
between the order and chaos that shape our mutual
reality. Recently, Jay has turned his attention to
creating semi-abstract representations of people in
public life who have meant much to him.
The exhibition will run thru Fri Nov 17.
Admission is $8 ($5 for Markeim members).

Author talks in September
› The Public Library will present three virtual talks
by prominent authors in September:
• Thu Sep 7 from 7 to 8pm – Lidia Bastianich will
speak on “Life, Love, Family, and Food.”
Born in Pula, on the Istrian peninsula, Lidia grew
up surrounded by love and security, learning the art
of Italian cooking from her beloved grandmother.
But when a communist regime annexed Istria,
Lidia’s family fled, eventually to the United States.
Lidia will preview her newest cookbook Lidia’s
From Our Family Table to Yours: More Than 100
Recipes Made With Love for All Occasions: A
Cookbook.
• Wed Sep 20 from 2 to 3pm – Adam Alter will tell
us “How to Get Unstuck When It Matters Most.”
Whether you’re muddling through a midlife crisis,
wrestling with writer’s block, trapped in a thankless
job, or trying to remedy a fraying friendship,
the resulting emotion is usually a mix of anxiety,
uncertainty, fear, anger, and numbness. Anatomy
of a Breakthrough provides a roadmap to escape
inertia and flourish in the face of friction.
• Wed Sep 27 from 8 to 9pm – Amor Towles will
speak about writing three international bestsellers:
Rules of Civility (2011), A Gentleman in Moscow
(2016), and The Lincoln Highway (2021).
