Donor Impact
Report

01
President’s
Welcome
Dear Friends,
I am delighted to introduce our 2022 Donor Impact
Report celebrating your kind generosity, which has been
instrumental in improving the experience of our students and
communities. In this report, you will find numerous examples
of the difference your support has made, through many
different initiatives and projects.
It is truly inspiring to observe the positive outcomes of what
we have accomplished together, and on behalf of the entire
University; I would like to express my deepest gratitude for
your ongoing commitment and partnership in making TU
Dublin a truly transformative institution.
2022 marked the completion of our first year under our new
academic structures. Importantly, thanks to our
wonderful community of donors and partners, we continue to
create a centre of discovery and learning of which all
students, staff and communities can be very proud. The
provision of world-class educational infrastructure,
supports our students through scholarships, mentoring
opportunities and external interaction. It also enhances
our ability to deliver leading edge research, addressing
global challenges. Your commitment helps drive our
ambition to further enrich our reputation as a university
focused on meaningful partnership with the sectors and
communities we serve.
As we put the pandemic behind us and see our campuses
buzzing again with life and energy, I thank you once
again for your generous ongoing support, as we strive
to create a better world, together.
Best regards,
Professor David FitzPatrick
TU Dublin President

Development
Ministers Harris
and Donohoe turn
the sod on flagship
development
In March, TU Dublin was delighted to welcome
Minister for Further and Higher Education,
Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris
TD, and Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe
TD, to turn the sod on the new Academic Hub
and Library at our Grangegorman Campus.
When completed in 2024, this 12,600m²
development, which incorporates the existing
North House (a protected structure) into its
design, will provide a consolidated University
library alongside a range of student and staff
supports.
“Over the past ten years, the Grangegorman
development has transformed its neighbouring area,
creating employment, education and improving
access. The Academic Hub and Library is an important
investment in the development of the new city-centre
campus and I am delighted to be here to mark the
beginning of the project.”
Minister Harris TD
Sports Science and Health
Building, Tallaght Campus
We are delighted to share the completion of our €14.7 million Sports
Science and Recreation facility on the Tallaght Campus. This amazing
facility provides an extra 3,282m² of space and increases our overall
capacity by more than 600 students.
This new building includes an expansive hall hosting a range of indoor
sports, including basketball, soccer, and badminton. It also caters
for TU Dublin Sports Clubs, Student Societies, volunteering groups,
examinations, graduation events and local community programmes.
On the first floor we have a gym and fitness suite. This includes
resistance and cardio equipment, available throughout the year to
our students and staff.
The Sports Science element of the building delivers two lecture
theatres, three classrooms and exercise medicine laboratories to
support research and teaching in exercise physiology, exercise
rehabilitation, strength & conditioning, anthropometry, biomechanics,
and performance analysis.
Ministers Donohoe and Harris
with representatives from TU
Dublin, the Grangegorman
Development Agency, OHLA-
Townlink Joint Venture Ltd and
O’Donnell + Twomey Architects
“A key facility in this new building will be the AIB Civic
Engagement Outreach Centre, a dedicated teaching
and learning space for community engagement. These
community programmes are designed to help students
from groups currently underrepresented in higher
education to build a relationship with the University during
their secondary school life by participating in interactive
workshops.”
Professor David FitzPatrick, President, TU Dublin
Students enrolled in our 4-year Applied Social Care and Early
Childcare Education programmes also attend classes here and
benefit from dedicated Art, Music, and Drama rooms.
The building was handed over by the main contractor ABM in
February 2023 and opens to students in September this year.

Tallaght
In December 2022, TU Dublin warmly welcomed
the announcement by Minister for Further and
Higher Education, Research, Innovation and
Science, Simon Harris TD, that the Higher
“The announcement by Minister Harris
paves the way for the construction of two critical elements
of Higher Education infrastructure in the Greater Dublin
Region on the University’s Tallaght and Blanchardstown
Campuses. These new developments will enhance the
learning and working environment where our community
can explore, develop, expand their abilities, and reach their
full potential. In addition, in keeping with the University’s
sustainability ethos and energy policy, the University will
connect to a new district heating system using waste heat
in Tallaght, while the new building in Blanchardstown will
use air-source heat pumps.”
TU Dublin Sustainability overview TU Dublin’s commitment to
Climate Action
As we transform to become one of the world’s most sustainable
universities, TU Dublin acts as a leader and a voice for climate action,
promoting a new way of living and working that protects our planet for
future generations. Sustainability underpins our University strategy, and
is aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
In October 2022, TU Dublin approved the formation of the Sustainability
Team under the leadership of the new Vice President for Sustainability,
Jennifer Boyer. This function has been tasked with enabling the
transformative change required to develop our people (staff and
students) to become more responsible global citizens and ensure our
campus environment is carbon neutral by 2040.
“Now is a time for courageous leadership and
unprecedented collaboration at all levels to protect
the fate of our planet for future generations.”
Jennifer Boyer, Vice President for Sustainability
Informed by the requirements of The Public Sector Climate Action
Mandate, TU Dublin formalised plans for reducing total energy related
emissions and fossil fuel related emissions from our operations.
In March 2023, TU Dublin published its first Climate Action Roadmap
which sets out a route towards meeting our obligations under the Public
Sector Climate Action Mandate, but also more broadly our ambitions
to develop responsible citizens, advance new knowledge, shape policy,
and transform our campus infrastructure and operations into a beacon
of sustainability.
Achieving and exceeding carbon and sustainability targets will require
optimisation of existing infrastructure and the introduction of cuttingedge
clean energy technologies. In April 2023, we formally celebrated
our partnership with Heatworks, Ireland’s first low-carbon District
Heating Network. Our Tallaght Campus is part of the innovative initiative
led by South Dublin County Council (SDCC) with the assistance of the
Dublin energy agency, Codema.
Heatworks will initially provide heat to 32,800m² of local public
buildings at TU Dublin and SDCC, expanding to heat 133 affordable
apartments in 2025. Heatworks uses excess heat from a nearby data
centre to provide low carbon heat to customers. Facilities to benefit
from this service on the Tallaght Campus include; the main building,
our newly opened Sports-Science, Health and Recreation Facility, and
the new multi-disciplinary teaching & research building which is to be
completed in 2024.
Design + Construct at TU Dublin,
Broombridge
This has been a very exciting year for Design + Construct. In January,
the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and
Science, Simon Harris TD, announced that Design + Construct had been
given approval to proceed to the next phase of the project proposal
development under the Technological Sector Strategic Project Fund
(TSSPF). This will support the refurbishment of the satellite campus in
order to provide core academic space to address capacity constraints
and enhance the student experience.
Since this announcement, a faculty-level Design + Construct Working
Group has been established to progress the project. This group will
complete the Preliminary Business Case and prepare the Definitive
Project Brief by July 2023. Faculties from across the University (Science
& Health, Computing, Digital & Data, Arts & Humanities and Business)
are engaging with the development of Design + Construct.
A Design + Construct Project Team in Campus Planning and Estates
has also been established to lead the building project, together with
colleagues from Finance and Strategic Development.
In a further significant stage of the process, Energy Management and
Cost consultants are currently being appointed to establish an Energy
Strategy Plan which will support best practice and embed sustainability
in the development of the Preliminary Business Case and the Project
Brief.
19
“Today is a key milestone as we see TU
Dublin emerge from the first part of a robust strategic
assessment process and move to the next phase of the
project life cycle, the Preliminary Business Case. This
investment will play an important role in supporting the
technological sector as drivers of regional development
by allowing them to better meet the needs of learners
in their region, to deepen existing and forge new
relationships with business and enterprise and to
respond in an agile fashion to future developments.”
The project team has also commenced creating a Design + Construct
engagement, events and communication plan. This will include a
broad programme of activities and collaboration across community
outreach local groups & representatives, industry partners and other
stakeholders.
Following the outcome of the TSSPF application, the project will
proceed to the detailed design stage with the appointment of a
design team in late 2023. This will be followed by the tendering and
procurement process with construction commencing mid-late 2024
and completion in late 2025.
Entrepreneurship for People with
Disabilities
Last September, TU Dublin introduced a new course to assist people
with disabilities in starting their own businesses and developing their
entrepreneurial skills. The course was co-founded by the Open Doors
Initiative and generously supported by AIB for a period of three years.
The course is the only customised entrepreneurship programme for
people with disabilities in Ireland, designed to address the additional
and distinctive challenges faced by members of that community when
starting their own business. Taking place fully online, the AIB & TU Dublin
Entrepreneurship for People with Disabilities Programme provided
participants with the skills and knowledge to become self-employed
and help them overcome the challenges of creating their own job. Each
participant received a business mentor through the Local Enterprise
Office network and utilised an online tool called Sim Venture Validate
to develop their business plan on a week-by-week basis.
There were 20 places available on the programme, which was
significantly oversubscribed. Certificates of completion were
presented by the Minister for Disability, Anne Rabbitte TD at the end
of the course. From the 20 participants, it is estimated that there will
eventually be six start-ups from the programme. However, the postcourse
survey highlighted that almost every participant noted that
their self-confidence had grown substantially through the course and
that they now felt highly positive about their prospects of securing
employment in the near future.
This impactful initiative received significant media attention at the
time of the launch, while RTE Nationwide filmed interviews and scenes
from the business pitches for their programme. Overall, the course is
one of a suite of entrepreneurship initiatives delivered by the Faculty
of Business targeted at minority and disadvantaged communities
and demonstrates the University’s ongoing commitment to proactive
community engagement.
including Stepping Stone Forests, Tallaght Community
Council, and Dodder Action. TU Dublin also collaborated with
Tallaght Community Council to plant forests in local schools,
including Killinarden Community School.
These initiatives form part of TU Dublin’s ongoing commitment
to societal engagement with several more collaborative
projects in the pipeline including enhancement of the
environmental and amenity value of the River Poddle, which
rises northwest of Tallaght and flows through the TU Dublin
Tallaght Campus and the promotion of biodiversity through
the creation of wildflower meadows and rewilding.
Exceptional
Circumstances Fund
Over the last two years, thanks to the generosity of
donors to the TU Dublin Student Support Fund, 12
deserving student-facing projects were funded. In
summer 2022, with the onset of the cost-of-living
crisis, the decision was taken to redirect the Student
Support Fund into what is now the Exceptional
Circumstances Fund.
This Fund is to help TU Dublin students who cannot
access traditional financial aid, providing assistance
directly to those experiencing extreme and immediate
financial difficulty.
‘‘During first and second year in TU Dublin I was homeless
and at my lowest. After a year and a half of uncertainty,
I was offered accommodation by Focus Ireland, which
changed my life. But, I was still not able to meet a lot of
the costs of day to day life. I was so relieved when staff
in TU Dublin Tallaght told me about the Exceptional
Circumstances Fund. The application was easy, and
I received the support very quickly. This meant that I
was able to get back on my feet quicker than I ever
expected. This was a huge boost, helping me to be
able to stay in college. Thank you to all the donors to
the Exceptional Circumstances Fund.’’
impact on our engagement with alumni.
Graduation
Celebrations
In addition to the return of in-person
graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2022,
we were delighted to also welcome graduate
cohorts from November 2020 and Spring 2021
back to campus, finally getting the chance to
acknowledge their hard work.
In total, we hosted over 1,400 graduates
and guests on the TU Dublin Blanchardstown
Campus for four graduation-style events on
Saturday, 29th and Sunday, 30th October
2022. It was a pleasure to see so many of
our past students again and hear what they
have been up to since leaving - many of whom
had not seen each other since teaching was
moved online in March 2020.
On behalf of all at TU Dublin, we wish all
graduates the very best as We Create a Better
World Together.
