Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: We’re talking about where we were drinking this week 

and that’s Cape May Brew Co.! Grab a couple of six-packs at most of 

your local liquor stores near and far, but we stopped by the tasting room 

on Hornet Road inside the Cape May Airport complex. 

The vibe: It was a pretty hot Sunday afternoon, but their outdoor 

seating area was covered by a large tent and a cool breeze swept through 

every now and again. Large barrells are spaced out for tables and there’s 

plenty of benches around the perimeter — ample seating for large or 

small groups. Flights and pints were floating around us and many 

groups, ours included, were bringing in food to munch on while sipping 

a few cold ones. Their BYOF (bring your own food) policy allows for 

anything you’d like whether inside the tasting room or outside in the 

tented seating area or Brewtanical Garden. 

The drinks: There was a large group of us visiting and we are quite 

familiar with Cape May Brew Co. It’s one of our favorite spots to spend 

an afternoon and we enjoyed a variety of brews. A few pints of the Bog 

— their cranberry shandy, a flight full of flagships like Coastal Evacuation, 

limited releases like Boat Ramp Champ and Bed of Shells, PLUS a 

few new brews we’ve never tried. The stand-out favorite was their seasonal 

Hard Root Beer Float. It’s sweet and refreshing and had us planning 

a trip to an ice cream shop for a traditional root beer float. Another 

fan-favorite was of the non-alcoholic variety — their house made root 

beer. A few of us never realized this existed and it’s a delicious option 

for those who don’t drink, or just want to take it easy during their next 

visit. It was a very cool addition to their packed tasting room menu. 

The takeaway: Cape May Brew Co. is open year-round and has 

quite a selection, so everyone is bound to find something to sip on. The 

tasting room is currently open daily from 11am-9pm and the Brewtanical 

Garden is open Fridays 2-7pm and Sat-Sun 12-7pm. If you’re really 

enjoying your beer, seltzer or another libation, check out the brewtique 

where you can purchase a selection of six or four packs to bring home!

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

As we stand on the brink of another 

autumn migration in Cape May, the 

“migration mainline,” one question 

is on every birder’s mind: “What 

kind of a fall is it going to be?” Will 

it be a year blessed with a bevy of back-toback 

cold fronts that track properly or one of 

those disastrous years when fronts track west, 

setting up a “backdoor” cold-front scenario 

where winds start north not north west and 

shift to east the next day. It’s cold and windy 

but skies are devoid of birds. 

Will the one-day record of 21,800 hawks 

set in 1977 ever be broken? Probably not, 

the circumstances leading up to that flood 

of raptors will likely never be duplicated. A 

population suppressed by DDT poisoning for 

decades, suddenly bursting loose with pent up 

procreation ambitions. Bolstered by four days 

of consecutive northwest winds at the peak of 

migration — October 4. Magic. 

Are we set for a Northern Goshawk invasion. 

It’s been a decade since the last, and 

goshawk invasions run at an every-10-yearor-so 

pace. It would be bad news for pigeons 

but great news for local hawk watchers who 

rarely get to see these northern raptors. 

How about Northern Saw-whet Owls? 

We’re about due for a banner year. These coffee-cup-sized 

owls are so adorable, they make 

beagle puppies want to trade up. During years 

with peak owl migrations, the birds land on 

beachfront balcony furniture and (sadly) pile 

up along roadsides. The birds have the unfor- 

tunate habit of hunting at car grill-top height 

so are prone to automobile strikes. Roosting 

where they find an overhanging dome of 

honeysuckle vines, favored roosts are used 

night after night. But saw-whets won’t arrive 

until November and there should be plenty to 

excite the region’s birders before that. 

It doesn’t seem like much of an Atlantic 

Hurricane season but all it takes is one good 

storm making landfall south and west of us 

to ferry lots of tropical waifs our way — birds 

trapped in the eye of the storm that get deposited 

when the eyewall crosses land. Surfers 

and birders are probably the only people who 

look forward to hurricane conditions. 

So here it is, another fall at the “crossroads 

of migration.” Three months of promise 

and lots of material for future columns. Sadly, 

there is one natural spectacle that seems 

doomed to fall short of expectations this year. 

That is the Monarch Butterfly migration. It’s 

been a cold wet year in New England. Oh, 

well, if every year was the same, autumn 

migrations would be boringly predictable.

The Theater Column

The beloved and popular tale Driving 

Miss Daisy has come to East Lynne 

Theater Company. The 1987 play, 

written by Alfred Uhry, begins in 1948 

in Atlanta, Georgia. Daisy Werthan 

crashed her car, and her son Boolie insists she 

have a driver and hires Hoke Coleburn. We 

follow their relationship for the next 25 years 

in an extremely moving story. It touches on 

familial loyalties, class, friendship, prejudice, 

aging, and death in an endearingly human and 

funny way. You’ll laugh, cry, and think. 

Art McFarland plays Hoke Colburn, the 

long-suffering and tenderly loyal driver and 

“best friend” for Miss Daisy. An Atlanta native, 

McFarland is familiar with the locations and 

the lives portrayed in the play. McFarland has 

credits as a stage, television, and movie actor 

and he returned to acting after a decades-long 

career as a TV news reporter in New York. 

Miss Daisy Werthan is played by T. Cat 

Ford. Also a Georgia native, Ford is an accomplished 

actor and playwright. She wonderfully 

portrays Daisy’s stubborn resistance to having 

a hired driver as it melts into reliance and 

affection. Daisy’s aging is done purely by gesture, 

voice, and affect: a brilliant performance. 

Rounding out the three-person cast 

is Damon Bonetti as Daisy’s son, Boolie 

Werthan. A Philadelphia born actor, director, 

musician, and teacher. In his role, he conveys 

exasperation, concern and affection. He also 

develops respect for Hoke and relays his reliance 

on his mother’s driver and friend. 

The play’s music is originated and 

recorded by Gordon Vincent. He was born 

in northern New Jersey and spent 12 years 

in Nashville, where he was ranked one of 

the top Independent artists of the Southeast 

by Billboard magazine. Kristine Schlachter, 

Production Stage Manager, created the program 

to play Vincent’s recorded music. 

In his opening remarks, Artistic Director 

Craig Fols paid tribute to his ELTC predecessors, 

Warren Kliewer and Gayle Stahlhuth. 

Fols also announced that ELTC has signed a 

contract with the City of Cape May to create a 

theater space in the restored AME Church on 

Franklin Street, joining a developing arts and 

cultural district that includes Franklin Street 

School and Harriet Tubman Museum.

The Nature Center of Cape May helped 

me raise my kids. At the turn of this 

century, when my budding naturalists 

had questions about sand and sea and 

salp, it was a group of volunteers armed 

with nets and knowledge who gave them — 

and me — an environmental education. The 

Nature Center now has the backing of New 

Jersey Audubon and a beautiful facility, but back 

then, it seemed to run on enthusiasm. That 

enthusiasm remains, evident in camps for children, 

kayak tours, and other programs for the 

whole family. A visit to 1600 Delaware Avenue 

is always worthwhile, but booking one of their 

popular classes is the best way to boost your 

knowledge of local flora and fauna. Consider 

“Beachcombing the Cove” ($12 adults/$6

My affection for the Nature Center sparks

heaven.” The Center bought St. Mary’s by the Sea 

and opened this summer, pledging to preserve 

the structure, which began life as the Shoreham 

Hotel and then served as abolitionist William 

Still’s “refuge for aged and infirm Black people,” 

before a century as a retreat for nuns. The hope 

is to maintain the building and celebrate its 

links to the history of the Underground Railroad, 

whose conductors, like Harriet Tubman, used 

the Cape May lighthouse to navigate. They also 

plan to one day provide housing for researchers 

and interns tracking the wildlife that migrates 

through Cape May’s sea and skies. 

Currently, the Center hosts stargazing 

events, yoga in the courtyard, tours of the facility 

and similar community-building activities. The 

next stargazing event will be on September 16, 

from 8 to 10pm. Tickets are $10 per person, or 

$25 for a group of three or more. Bring a beach 

blanket or chair. Park at Cape May Point State

more. On September 3, they’ll host a gala featuring 

the unveiling of the statue “The Beacon 

of Hope,” which honors Harriet Tubman, along 

with a performance by the Glassbrook Vocal 

Ensemble. Tickets for this fundraising event 

are $150 for General Admission, with entry at 

5:30. Foundation Sponsorship opportunities are 

available for $250, with a reception at 5pm. The 

main event, a performance of Christopher Tin’s 

“The Lost Birds” will run from 6-7:30pm.

My wife’s grandchildren, my stepgrandchildren, 

have been with us all summer 

— June through Labor Day. They are six and 10 

and need to be watched at all times. I’m always 

worried about turning my eye on them. The 

problem is my stepdaughter “visits” from time 

to time, but never offers to take them home 

for a week. She and her husband have recently 

separated, and I understand it’s a tense time, 

but this is a burden on us and my wife won’t 

talk to her about it. Nor will she let me. What 

would you suggest? — Exasperated 

Dear Exasperated 

Not much to do about it now. You must 

have a heart-to-heart with your wife. It’s 

her responsibility to make her daughter 

understand that this is an unfair burden on 

you both. Next summer, let your stepdaughter 

know that you need some kid-free time so 

you two can enjoy the summer. This kind of 

behavior places too much stress on your own 

marriage. A summer evening at Harbor View 

is just the ticket to have a chat. Focus on the 

need to spend more time with each other, 

thus enabling you to enjoy the kids instead of 

resenting them.

City of Cape May honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the 2001 attacks on 

the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93. 

The PATRIOT DAY commemoration ceremony held at Beach Avenue at 

the Cove is a solemn and moving ceremony with speakers from local 

organizations along with community leaders who remind us of the 

sacrifice of Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Technicians who valiantly 

struggled that day to save lives. 

There is a moment of silence as the flag is lowered for the summer 

season. Bring the family and take part in this community event.

CALIBER is a three-year-old black lab who 

loves to be with people and is a happy and 

active dog. He loves to run around the yard 

and chase toys and has excellent leash manners. 

His previous family indicated that he has 

seizures but has not had any since arriving at 

the shelter. Caliber would be good in a home 

with other dogs and children, but no cats. 

DELPHINE is an active, year-and-a-half-old 

girl who arrived at the shelter as a stray. She is 

getting settled in and learning behavior cues. 

Her leash manners are improving daily and 

she’s working on impulse control. Delphine is 

dog friendly but would need a slow introduction. 

A family with older children would also 

suit her best. 

ROCKET is an active one-year-old boy who 

was brought to the shelter when his owners 

could no longer keep him. He’s a happy, active 

puppy who loves people. Rocket has good 

leash skills and is learning to use self-control 

behaviors to curb his puppy enthusiasm. He is 

good with children and a slow introduction to 

other dogs and cats would be best for him.
