Welcome to Fall 2023 

As summer winds down, we look forward to the cooler 

temperatures this fall. A single yellow leaf falls from a birch 

tree, V-formations of Canada geese fly south high in the air, 

wild apples and grapes drip from the branches – all signs 

that fall is here. Autumn is a beautiful time of year in the 

Kawarthas, with brilliant colours appearing in the forests 

and silence returning to the lakes and rivers. 

This issue provides our readers with information on a 

variety of topics of interest to cottage owners, waterfront 

home owners and city and rural home owners alike. The fall 

is an excellent time to start thinking about new projects 

and improvements to enjoy next summer.

Designs New Cottage Around Rock

When Susan and Kevin bought an older 

cottage on Big Bald Lake a few years ago, 

they soon discovered that while they loved 

the location on the Canadian Shield, they didn’t like 

the dark cottage, which hailed from different eras, from 

the 1950s to the 1970s, with stairs going every which 

way in what Susan calls a “Hogwarts castle” style. They 

decided they wanted to build a new cottage. 

“We designed the new cottage to be elevated and to 

fit around the rocks and trees. We took care of the 

planning applications and variances that were required, 

and blasted some rock behind.” 

“Jamey, the site manager was fantastic in helping to 

determine where the foundation would be, to nestle it 

in behind the rock,” says Susan. 

“We interviewed four different builders and when we 

met Ryan Hayter at RWH Construction, we knew that 

he understood our vision,” says Susan. “He took the 

time to look at the property and suggested how to best 

position the cottage.” 

The lot was challenging in that there was a large 

granite rock to work around. The previous cottage had 

been built behind it, impeding views of the lake. 

“We removed the old cottage, which was lower 

than the rock and not well designed,” says Ryan. 

The new 2500 sq. ft. custom cottage on two levels is 

in a transitional modern design with an exterior of 

pre-treated wood siding, cedar shakes and a stone 

chimney. The lower level is a partial basement with a 

large crawl space. The other section has 9 ½ ft. ceilings 

in the sitting area, bedroom, work-out room and 

storage areas, with a walk-out to the water and views 

to the outside. 

The bright open concept main level has a plethora of 

windows that look out over the rock with unobstructed 

views to the lake. The 9 ½ ft. cathedral ceilings grace

the great room, which flows into the kitchen and 

dining room. An office leads to the primary bedroom, 

two other bedrooms and two bathrooms. There are two 

fireplaces, a stone wood-burning one in the great room 

and a woodstove below. An extensive deck sits atop 

the rock. 

This energy-efficient home has a high efficiency 

propane furnace with air conditioning, Insulated 

Concrete Form (ICF) foundation, and triple pane 

casement windows. 

“Our new home is breathtaking – it flows better and 

showcases views from most of the rooms,” says Susan. 

“We’re really enjoying the space with our two sons. 

RWH was great to work with. Our concerns were their 

concerns and their transparency with the budget was 

appreciated.” 

“If you were to drive by this new home, it looks 

like it’s meant to be there – it fits so well into the 

landscape, nestled amidst the large pine and maple 

trees,” says Ryan. “It’s a beautiful cottage that will last a 

lifetime.”

township and advise the clients on that,” says Harold. 

“The municipality also usually has a stipulation about 

the percentage of the lot size or maximum footprint 

that the suite can occupy, so that if there are already 

sheds on the property, they may have to be removed. 

We can also add the unit to the existing house if the 

client prefers that option.”

“The kitchen is often considered the heart of the 

home, where meals are prepared, people gather and 

memories are made,” says Laurel. “When designing 

your ideal kitchen, it’s crucial to strike a balance 

between functionality, aesthetics, and innovation.” 

“It’s important to remember that the functionality of

The Work Triangle: One of the key considerations 

in kitchen layout functionality is the concept of the 

work triangle. The work triangle consists of three 

main areas: the refrigerator, the sink, and the cooking 

surface (range or cooktop). These areas should form 

an efficient triangle, with each side measuring between 

4 and 9 feet. This design principle ensures that these 

essential elements are easily accessible and minimizes 

unnecessary movement while working in the kitchen. 

Proper Circulation Clearances: Another crucial 

aspect of layout functionality is ensuring clear 

traffic flow within the kitchen. Avoid placing major 

appliances or obstacles in the way of the primary 

pathways. Designate separate zones for cooking, 

food preparation, and cleanup to prevent congestion 

and allow multiple people to work in the kitchen 

simultaneously without getting in each other’s way. 

Maximizing Counter Space: Sufficient counter space 

is essential for food preparation, serving, and other 

kitchen tasks. When possible, prioritize free and clear 

surfaces adjacent to the stove and sink. This provides 

convenient work surfaces for chopping, mixing, and 

assembling ingredients. Consider incorporating an 

island or peninsula to create additional counter space

Engineering manager at Discovery Dream Homes, 

Nico Fond had worked on over 300 homes 

during his time with the company, helping 

clients bring their visions to life. So, when it came time 

for him and his partner Airin Aguilera to build their 

new home on Chemong Lake, he brought his years of 

experience to the project. 

“We wanted a pine log home that wasn’t in a 

traditional style, but in a modern Scandinavian design, 

with a minimalist look,” says Fond. “The lot is on a hill 

with a beautiful view of the lake, so we wanted lots of 

windows to let in lots of light.” 

The couple designed their custom home with the help 

of Discovery designer Kate Jewell who met with the 

pair several times to go over their ideas and concepts. 

The 2800 sq. ft. house is on two levels. The lower level 

is a walk-out overlooking the lake. Half of it is a twocar 

garage and the other half is its own unit which the 

couple have the option to rent out as an Airbnb, with a 

kitchenette, living room, bedroom and bathroom. 

“We have barn doors on the unit so that it can be 

closed off when we have guests, or it can be opened 

when we have family staying with us,” he says. 

The main level has an open concept kitchen, living and 

dining rooms, with two bedrooms, an office and two 

bathrooms. 

Fond says that energy efficiency was a priority in the 

design of this home, which has a gas furnace. 

“The extensive windows allow for passive heat in the 

winter – even when it’s -40 degrees Celsius outside, 

it can feel like +20 degrees Celsius inside,” he says. 

“In the summer, it stays cool because of the large 

overhang, and we can open the upper windows to 

allow for air flow. Also, we can use the air conditioning 

as a back-up.” 

Fond came up with a new design for the corners of 

the log home, making it a little different from the 

traditional dovetailed, staggered logs. There are now 

corner posts that all line up, which he says he likes the 

look of. 

Fond says that even though he’s worked on building 

homes for other people and knew a lot about the 

structural and material aspects, he learned a lot in 

the process of building his own home, as he hadn’t 

designed a kitchen or bathroom before, or dealt with 

all the finishes required.

When Nicole moved in to her 20-year-old 

house two years ago, she knew she wanted 

to renovate the kitchen. It was cut in half 

by a U-shaped peninsula, with very little counter and 

storage space. Kitchen Cabinet Solutions was highly 

recommended by a contractor who was working 

on her basement, so she brought in designer Stacey 

Lawrence early in the process. 

“When I spoke to Stacey I told her my vision for 

the space – to make it more functional with lots of 

counterspace and cabinets, and she helped to pull it all 

together,” says Nicole. 

Once extensive measurements were taken, Stacey 

developed a design which, after a few back and forths, 

was ready to go. 

Nicole’s dream was to have a large island to eat at and 

prepare food. The large 11 ½ ft. x 42” island is now the 

centrepiece of the room, seating six, with an overhang 

on three sides and a waterfall on the fourth side. It’s 

topped with Hanstone quartz in the colour known as 

Montauk, which continues on the countertops and 

the full height backsplash in the rest of the kitchen, 

making the whole room sparkle as light reflects off all 

of the high gloss surfaces. 

The island houses the sink and dishwasher with a 

garbage pull-out and lots of other storage space. There 

is lots of floor space surrounding the island, making it 

accommodating for several people to be in the kitchen 

at once doing food prep, cooking and eating. 

The cabinets are 9 ft. high, all to the ceiling, in contrast 

to the previous cabinets which were only 6 ½ ft. high. 

The doors are finished in a durable thermofoil, which 

will stand up to wear and tear over the years. 

“I’ve never had so much space, I can even store 

seasonal items in the kitchen now,” says Nicole. 

The kitchen has multiple pull-out drawers for dishes, 

pots, and dry goods. To the left of the double fridge is 

a pantry that can be pulled straight out. At the top are 

full cabinets that go back to the wall. To the left of the

“A fun detail is the transformation of the space that used 

to be a closet and a wall, to the left of the doorway, 

which was somewhat challenging for us,” says Stacey. 

“It’s now a wall of pantries that wraps around and has a 

wide cabinet in which to store spices.”

...selects retro beach theme for Princess Margaret Cottage Lottery 


Over the past 11 years, Angela Jones and her 

team have worked with the Princess Margaret 

Cottage Lottery to raise money for cancer 

research. This year, the summer cottage for the draw, 

which took place on July 25, was on White Lake, just 

outside of Lakefield in the Kawarthas. 

“This beautiful cottage is located close to the water 

on a small bay and we were honoured to have the 

privilege to design the interior,” says Angela Jones, 

owner of Lakeshore Designs. 

The three-level, three-bedroom home was constructed 

by Linwood Custom Homes, built by Brad McFarlane 

Construction. Its approximately 2,000 sq. ft. interior 

consists of an upper loft, open concept main level with 

large windows overlooking the lake, and a walk-out 

lower level with a screened-in sunroom facing the lake. 

“We studied the blueprints and designed the interior 

from there, selecting the flooring, the trim, paint 

colours, accents, lighting and all of the furnishings,” 

says Angela. 

She selected a soft, warm white palette for the walls 

and furniture with accents of soft Coventry grey on 

the island and doors. Soft, wood-toned flooring from 

Fuzion flows throughout the space, echoing the warm 

tones of the exterior siding. 

“The floor-to-ceiling fireplace with stone accents is 

the focal point of the main level,” she continues. “It’s 

flanked by two large mirrors and provides a cozy spot 

in which to gather around in the cooler weather.” 

Angela decorated the lower level on a retro beach 

theme, with retro bathing suits, beach hut accents and 

art in black and white sepia tones gracing the walls. 

When asked about her longtime participation with 

the Princess Margaret Cottage Lottery, she replies that 

she wholeheartedly supports the Princess Margaret 

Cancer Centre, as all funds raised go back into cancer 

research, which she says “has been making great 

progress in fighting the disease. By buying a ticket, you 

are supporting world-leading research that changes the 

lives of cancer patients and their family members on a 

daily basis.”
