action with three of our teams 

in action on the same day.

I would especially like to welcome all our 

young fans who have joined us today as 

part of the club’s Family Day theme. If this 

is your first time at a Rhinos game, I hope 

you have an enjoyable afternoon and we 

look forward to welcoming you back soon. 

Today sees our Womens team back in action 

after their historic game at Wembley last 

Saturday. I would like to congratulate Lois 

and the team on a big effort in the Final, 

despite a number of challenges ahead of the 

game, they did the club proud in the Final 

and I am sure they will look to build on that 

in the coming weeks as they aim for the play 

offs and a return to the Grand Final. 

Since our last game against Leigh Leopards, 

we have put the time to good use as we 

head into the crucial stage of the season as 

the play off positions will be decided. I am 

sure there will be a lot of talk in the media 

about the remaining fixtures, with people 

predicting results and final league positions 

but, as we know from experience last year, 

our focus will only be on that week’s game 

and doing everything possible to secure 

victory; that is all we can control. 

I am sure for fans of the sport in general, 

the next few weeks will be an exciting time. 

The competition has been so competitive 

that no one can predict with any degree of 

confidence what will happen in the next six 

rounds and there will be plenty of twists and 

turns across all the teams. 

I would like to welcome our visitors from 

Warrington Wolves to Headingley this 

afternoon. Obviously, they have had their 

own well-documented challenges in recent 

weeks which will no doubt make them a 

dangerous opponent today. They have a 

new coach in place for next season so their 

players will be keen to impress and show 

what they can do this season with a play off 

spot still very much in their grasp. 

Finally, I would like to congratulate our 

young players on their recent exam results. 

As a club, we place a high priority on 

developing our players as young people not 

just players and it is important that we 

allow them to develop and achieve, not just 

on the rugby field. Our young players have 

worked hard this year combining training 

and playing with their revision and exams 

and they thoroughly deserve the grades they 

have achieved. Likewise, congratulations to 

our many young fans who are also receiving 

their grades and I hope, whatever the 

results you have received, that you are able 

to achieve what you want with the support 

of your family and friends.

funds and awareness for some of our 

city’s most vulnerable people.

AGAIN AFTER 

INJURY LAYOFF 


After picking up an injury in May, Harry Newman is hoping to put his 

time on the sidelines behind him and give everything for the Rhinos as 

the season draws to an end. 

Q. The team return to action 

after a week off for the 

Challenge Cup Final. How 

are preparations going for 

the next six big games? 

A. The boys have had a bit of 

time off last week but for me 

personally, I’ve been working 

hard to get back ready. 

Everyone has come back fresh 

and raring to go. There are six 

weeks left now before potential 

finals footie so we’ve just got 

to kick on and get the wins. 

We’ve had some struggles this 

season but for me personally, 

I’ve missed twelve weeks now 

and the best day of the week 

is always game day so today’s 

game can’t come soon enough. 

I’m going to continue to do my 

best for the team and hopefully 

get us to where we should be. 

Q. You’re back in contention 

for the first time since May, 

what has your mindset been 

like doing your rehab? 

A. Every injury is tough and I’ve 

had a fair few myself. It’s 

tough to take at first but then 

you’ve just got to crack on 

with it. If you don’t, you find 

yourself down and not getting 

the work done that you need 

to. It’s pretty weird to say, but 

each rehab has been enjoyable 

for me. I’ve worked with new 

people every time and each one 

of them have played a role in 

my recovery. That’s put me in 

a good position to play again.

Q. How helpful have the 

club’s support staff 

been in getting you 

prepared to get back 

out on the field? 

A. They’re always 

motivating. When you’re 

injured, it’s not every 

day you’ll come in and 

be buzzing and raring 

to go. They make sure I 

get the work done, tick 

all the little boxes, and 

give me the confidence 

that when I go back out 

on that field, I’ve done 

everything I needed 

to do to play again. 

Q. Today will be the third 

time we’ve played 

Warrington this season, 

but it will be a different 

side to the other two 

times we’ve faced them. 

What do you expect? 

A. Both teams have won 

one game each. They’ve 

gone through a tough 

period recently and 

we’ve gone through 

the same so we’re both 

desperate for a win. I’m 

sure that they’ll bring 

their best and we’ll be 

ready to bring ours too. 

This year been a crazy 

season and we’re only 

four points outside the 

Play-offs so it’s a huge 

game. Warrington are 

in fifth so if we get 

the result today, we’re 

back in the fight. 

Q. They have some big 

forwards and creative 

players across the 

field, who are you 

watching out for? 

A. George Williams is 

England captain so 

he’s an obvious player 

to keep an eye on. 

He’s great with the 

ball and that’ll have 

to be something that 

we’ll have to stop this 

week. They’ve got 

some big middles and 

powerful ball carriers 

like Sam Kasiano and 

Paul Vaughan too but 

I’m sure our middles 

can do a job on them. 

Q. With three of the last 

six games being played 

at Headingley, how 

important is the crowd 

going to be in helping 

the team on the pitch? 

A. When you play in front 

of the South Stand, it’s 

like having an extra man. 

When they get going 

behind you, it really does 

help. The atmosphere 

at Headingley is one of 

the best in the league 

and we’ll need them 

for the rest of the 

season, even when we 

go away as well. Y

he did things when 

the team was so

Being able to

It was being a rugby 

player to be honest.

kid. This is all I’ve

When we were 

younger, Tom Holroyd. 

He’s horrible to play 

against but great 

to play beside.

Cup title today at the EIS, 

Sheffield against Catalans 

Dragons, kick off 1pm. 

The teams finished joint top 

of the table at a qualifying 

Festival at Hull University’s 

Allam Sport Centre last 

month, to set up a repeat of 

last year’s Final which the 

Rhinos won 48-34 to maintain 

their grip on the Cup which 

stretches back to 2019. 

Head coach, James Simpson, 

who lifted the trophy as 

captain last year, said: 

“Catalans are a really good 

side. They have topped the 

French league for the past 

few years and we are the 

only English team to have 

beaten them, which came 

in last year’s Challenge Cup 

Final. We are going to go 

into the game with the belief 

that we know we can do it 

as we have done it before.” 

Although James has won 

the Challenge Cup on 

three occasions he says 

the approach to every 

Final is different. 

“I don’t really think about 

previous finals,” he said. 

“Everyone is new and you 

have to go through a different 

journey to win it. You have got 

to play different teams and 

there are different systems 

to it. Winning the Challenge 

Cup would mean a lot to the 

team, they have been working 

so hard over the last couple 

of weeks. Everyone is excited 

to put the hard work we have 

been doing into practice. 

“A lot of the Catalans team 

make up a bulk of the French 

national team and at Leeds 

we have players who played 

in the World Cup last year so 

they are familiar with those 

players internationally as well, 

so we have a lot of experience 

of playing against them 

individually, but it also means 

they have experience facing 

us too. We have done a lot of 

preparation and they will be 

doing the same, so we just 

have to make sure we do it a 

little bit better than them. 

“They have got lots of quality 

in their team and have class 

across the board, but so do 

we. In our side you’ve got 

Nathan Collins who is one of 

the most experienced players 

in the league. He has been 

playing 12 years and has done 

everything. Tom Halliwell is 

the classic old school half back 

and Jodie Boyd-Ward, who 

captains the side, is ferocious 

in defence. It will be an evenly 

matched contest and we can’t 

wait to get out there.” Y

A chance to recognise those who became South Stand heroes for their memorable 

exploits in blue and amber no matter their length of service. 


NORMAN FRANCIS 

One of a select band of players 

to appear for all the city’s 

professional clubs, imposing 

winger “Storming” Norman 

Francis crossed the city from 

Hunslet to debut for Leeds 

against Dewsbury in the 

second round of the Yorkshire 

Cup in September 1985, 

scoring a try in Leeds’ biggestever 

win at Crown Flatt. 

He played in the narrow semi-final 

loss at home to Cas, posting his 

first championship touchdown 

at Swinton a month later. His 

most memorable try came off 

the bench at Featherstone 

to crown a 22-20 win in 1989, 

but it was in the Friday night 

Alliance team matches that 

he gained hero status with a 

host of barnstorming runs. 

Never quite fully establishing 

himself as a first choice, he 

went on to play 44 times at first 

team level, scoring 11 tries but 

never more than one in a game, 

moving to Oldham in 1990-91. He 

crossed on four occasions for the 

Roughyeds in 16 appearances, 

also making two appearances on 

loan at Halifax, before moving 

back to Leeds for a spell in 

the west at Bramley, instantly 

helping them to promotion 

from Division Three with 15 

touchdowns in 25 appearances. 

In all, he turned out for the 

Villagers on 81 occasions, claiming 

38 tries, his sole hat trick in a win 

at Highfield. He retired in 1996 and 

sadly passed away last October.

BRAD GODDEN 

CULT HEROES 

After a slump that heralded the 

start of Super League, Leeds 

needed an injection of steel and 

turned to Novocastrian Brad 

Godden to shore up the centres. 

In Australia, he had allied himself 

with Super League, and transferred 

from the ARL Newcastle Knights 

to newly formed Hunter Mariners 

under head coach Graham 

Murray, reaching the World Club 

Championship final, although he 

missed that game through injury. 

When his mentor arrived at 

Headingley in ‘98, Godden came 

too and he was superb in not 

only bolstering up the middle 

with intimidating defence in the 

style of Dean Bell, but was a fine 

provider for his winger, Francis 

Cummins the chief beneficiary. His 

debut campaign, which included 

a sensational try at Wigan in a 

rare win at Central Park, saw 

him named in the Super League 

Dream Team and the following 

year, he scored at Wembley to 

give his side an important half 

time lead as London were beaten, 

having claimed touchdowns in 

two of the earlier rounds. 

Originally a half back, he 

was switched to full back by 

Newcastle coach David Waite 

and came to the attention of the 

national selectors with a series 

of confident displays during the 

1992 season. His form in the 

semi-finals – and despite not 

playing State of Origin honours - 

earned him a place in Australia's 

squad that contested the 1992 

World Cup final at Wembley, 

but he didn’t make the final 17. 

Wanting to remain at Headingley, 

he retired after leaving Leeds, 

aged 31, and went back to 

his home city to work in the 

construction industry.

On this day in years gone by, Leeds sides 

have been in Yorkshire Cup action against 

local rivals, run nine tries passed Catalans 

on home soil and claimed wins against 

Sheffield and London on the road. 

1977 

LEEDS 33 BATLEY 6 

Leeds entered the 1977 Yorkshire Cup 

campaign as holders and began with a 

convincing win against Batley. Two tries 

each from John Holmes and David Treasure, 

along with other tries by Mick Harrison, 

John Atkinson and Kevin Dick, helped Leeds 

claim a 33-6 result to progress through, 

but despite their success on home soil, Hull 

knocked Syd Hynes’ side out in round two. 

1978 

BRADFORD NORTHERN 24 LEEDS 23 

Leeds kicked off the 1978-79 season, again 

in the Yorkshire Cup but a close defeat to 

Bradford meant that the Loiners bowed 

out. Having led 15-5 in the first half, 

tries from Neil Hague, Alan Smith, John 

Sanderson, Phil Cookson and Mick Crane 

weren’t enough to get the visitors through 

as they conceded a 77th minute try to lose 

out by a point. 

1995 

SHEFFIELD 6 LEEDS 34 

Coming into the first round of the 1995-96 

league season off the back of defeat in the 

Charity Shield to Wigan, three tries from 

Francis Cummins helped Leeds to a 34-6 

win over Sheffield at Don Valley. David 

Gibbons, Gary Mercer, Alan Tait and Mick 

Cook also crossed the white line. 

2010 

LEEDS RHINOS 52 CATALANS DRAGONS 6 

Ahead of their Challenge Cup Final fixture 

in 2010, Leeds were comfortable winners 

against Catalans Dragons on this day 

with a nine-try performance. Danny 

McGuire and Ryan Hall’s hat tricks got the 

South Stand in full voice, plus Lee Smith, 

Brett Delaney and Rob Burrow sealed 

a convincing win against Dragons, who 

stayed at the bottom of the league table. 

2016 

LONDON BRONCOS 28 LEEDS RHINOS 42 

The Qualifiers continued for Leeds in 2016 

as they claimed a 42-18 win on the road 

against London Broncos. After beating 

Featherstone and Hull KR, the Rhinos 

ran out comfortable winners against the 

Broncos thanks to three tries from Tom 

Briscoe. James Segeyaro, Liam Sutcliffe, 

Kallum Watkins, Mitch Achurch and Jordan 

Lilley also crossed for tries as Leeds moved 

a step closer to retaining their Super 

League status.

CLASSIC CLASH WARRINGTON WOLVES 

In each edition of Blue and 

Amber this season, we’ve dug 

into the archives to highlight 

a memorable classic clash. 

For today’s opponents, 

Warrington Wolves, we are 

rewinding the clock to a highscoring 

affair in 2007… 

Leeds produced a clinical 

display at Headingley as Tony 

Smith’s side put the Wolves 

to the sword in a 42-26 win. 

The visitors took the lead after 

three minutes when Henry Fa’afili 

wrong-footed Danny McGuire 

before racing through to score, 

but the Rhinos sparked into life 

as McGuire put Keith Senior 

over with a nice cutout pass. 

The lead was extended after 20 

minutes when McGuire backed 

himself on the last tackle close 

to the Wolves line and sent 

Brent Webb in for this 16th try 

of the season under the posts. 

There was a quick response 

from the home side to a Kevin 

Penny try as Senior was awarded 

a penalty try after Lee Briers 

attempted to kick the ball out 

of the Leeds man’s hands, and 

McGuire also found the try line. 

With time running out, Fa’afili’s 

second try of the night made the 

score 24-14 to Leeds at the break. 

It was important that the Rhinos 

did not allow Warrington to gain 

any momentum at the start of 

the second half and Clinton Toopi 

made sure that the advantage 

remained with the home side. 

Fa’afili’s hat trick try gave the 

Wolves a lifeline with 20 minutes 

remaining, but once again 

Leeds took the wind out of their 

opponent’s sail. Webb kept his 

try tally ticking over with his 

second of the evening, and Ian 

Kirke ended the contest as the 

forward benefitted from great 

skill by Leeds’ spine players. 

Kevin Sinfield was accurate 

from the kicking tee all night as 

his seven conversions ensured 

the Rhinos stayed in second 

place in the league table. 

What happened next? 

Leeds finished second to 

St Helens in the table at the 

end of the regular season, but 

the Rhinos were set back in the 

first round of the Play Offs as 

Daniel Anderson’s Saints side 

won in the qualifying semi-final 

clash. Smith’s men responded by 

defeating Wigan at Headingley 

and they went on to reclaim 

Grand Final glory at Old 

Trafford against the Red Vee. 

This defeat to Leeds resulted 

in Warrington battling at 

the bottom of the table, but 

a run of six wins in their last 

nine games saw the Wolves 

miss out on the Play-Offs by 

just one point to Wigan. Y

FIRST SL MEETING 

Leeds and Warrington met in the first 

round of Super League in 1996 and it 

was the visitors to Headingley that left 

with their first points of the season. In 

front of a crowd of 10,036, Nick Fozzard, 

Kevin Iro and George Mann got the tries 

for the home side, but a try and five 

goals from Iestyn Harris saw the future 

Leeds man help John Dorahy’s side 

secure the win. 

BIGGEST LEEDS WIN AT HEADINGLEY 

In the 1997 Leeds recorded their biggest 

home win against the Wolves in the 

history of Super League, thanks to 

Francis Cummins and Barrie McDermott 

scoring two tries each. Harris’ 18 points 

(one try and seven goals) was a major 

factor, alongside further tries from 

Anthony Farrell, Graham Holroyd, 

Marcus St Hilaire and that season’s top 

try scorer Paul Sterling. 

LAST TIME OUT AT HEADINGLEY 

When the two clubs met in round 24 

last season at Headingley, the Rhinos 

responded to their defeat to Warrington 

in the opening game of the season with 

a 24-18 win. Four first-half tries saw Ash 

Handley, Rhyse Martin, Morgan Gannon 

and Zane Tetevano give the home 

side a commanding lead, and despite 

a fightback from the Wolves, Rohan 

Smith’s side held on for victory.

WARRINGTON WOLVES 

SEASON REVIEW 

It has been a season of upheaval at the 

Wolves, starting with a Super League club 

record eight successive wins to go top of 

the table, but currently in the midst of an 

equal landmark seven successive summer 

losses, which has seen their position in the 

top six put at risk. The current run does not 

include a disheartening loss at Wigan in 

the Challenge Cup, when the Warriors were 

down to 12 men for the bulk of the match. 

That has led to the parting of the ways, 

by mutual consent, of head coach Daryl 

Powell and his assistant Ryan Sheridan, 

barely 18 months into their rebuilding role. 

As if that wasn’t surprising enough to the 

outside world, the appointment for 2024 

of Sam Burgess in his first head coaching 

role - he is currently an assistant at 

South Sydney where he memorably won a 

Premiership - certainly stunned many, after 

initial target Justin Holbrook reneged on a 

supposed four-year deal. Veteran skipper 

Stefan Ratchford, switched to centre 

this season, and who recently passed 

400 career games, has claimed that 

Burgess, who has signed a two year deal, 

has already made his presence felt in the 

dressing room prior to his arrival. “I spoke 

to him the other day,” said Ratchford, who 

was an international teammate. “I got off 

the phone and straight away I was excited, 

just from the way he speaks and what his 

visions were moving forward.” Interim head 

coach Gary Chambers, who is working 

with Richard Marshall, will move into a new 

position of Director of Rugby, while former 

player Martin Gleeson has arrived in an 

advisory role specialising in attack.

THE COACH 

Rugged Cumbrian Gary Chambers, who 

made 210 appearances from 1989-2000 

for Warrington as a prop, has stepped up 

from head of youth to take the reins and 

try to steady the ship. Although in his first 

match in charge a fortnight ago the Wolves 

went down 30-10 at home to league leaders 

Catalans, he saw much to encourage him. 

“I love this place to the bone so I will give it 

everything I’ve got until the new man comes 

in, but the aim is to have them in a good 

place,” he said. “This is a fantastic place with 

fantastic people and it deserves to go in the 

right direction, and we will. With what they’ve 

gone through and the passion they’ve shown 

in the changing rooms and their commitment 

– this will change,” he enthused. “The pride 

is there, the passion is there. They do hurt 

and we’ve got to maximise that. We’ve just 

got to build them up and make them feel 

good about themselves again.” After retiring 

from playing, he moved into coaching as one 

of former head coach Darryl Van de Velde’s 

assistants. He is also a fully qualified teacher.

LEADER 

Paul Vaughan’s impact at the Halliwell Jones this 

season was immediate, many according him with 

the tag of being the best overseas signing in the 

competition. He made over 200 appearances 

in the NRL with home city Canberra, St George 

and Canterbury, was part of New South Wales’s 

State of Origin-winning team in 2018, along 

with representing Italy - qualifying through his 

maternal grandmother - in the 2013 and 2017 

Rugby League World Cups, and earning two caps 

for Australia in 2019. The 32-year-old originally 

signed a two year deal at the Halliwell Jones 

but has already extended that until the end of 

2025, such has been his impressive form. “It 

was a big move for my family coming over but 

we’re really happy and settled and it’s exciting 

to be able to extend my stay,” he acknowledged. 

“The club’s been really good to us and made 

that transition pretty easy. We’re loving it and 

it’s really exciting.” He added: “I’ve said to a few 

people that I probably haven’t enjoyed my footy 

as much as I have for a very long time.”


STAR MAN 

Stand off George Williams could not have 

been more honest and open when interviewed 

after the defeat to the Dragons. The current 

England skipper, who had a fantastic World 

Cup, said: “I think we showed a lot more 

effort, but we weren’t good enough against 

a good Catalans side. Too many pressure 

releases allowed them to have too much field 

position and they punished us in the end.” 

He added, with admirable frankness: “It’s 

disappointing. It has been for the last eight to 

10 weeks which is concerning but we’re doing 

our best and at the minute that’s not good 

enough. We’re soul searching, I’ll not beat 

around the bush, there’s lads that are down 

on confidence and confidence is a big part of 

sport at the moment.” He continued: “I’ll not 

sugarcoat it, but we are working hard, which 

is what everybody says, and we are doing our 

best to turn it around.” Williams returned to 

Super League after a much admired spell with 

Canberra in the NRL having made his name 

at Wigan where he won two Grand Finals in 

2016 and 2018, both against the Wolves. 

RISING STAR 

One of an emerging crop from their academy 

system, Josh Thewlis has committed to the 

Wolves until the end of 2026, noting: “I love 

everything about the club and the town. It’s a 

hard-working town and the fans are brilliant.” 

Oldham-born and eligible to play for England or 

Ireland, he made his debut at full back while only 

17 in a big home win over Catalans in June 2019, 

the second youngest player in the Super League 

era. He scored his 24th try in 57 appearances last 

time out, and memorably grabbed the late match 

winner in Perpignan earlier in the campaign. 

Steve Price gave him his debut and when asked 

what Thewlis' strengths were, the former Wolves 

head coach responded: “His anticipation, his 

support play and speed. He’s demanding of 

players and where he wants them in the defensive 

line - he’s not intimidated by what senior players 

have done in the game. He has good awareness 

and he just loves the game - he studies it 24/7 

and lives and breathes it.” His younger brother 

Jake is also in the Wolves set up.

outside the top two. 

Twenty-year-old Danny 

McGuire was sent on 

around the hour mark 

at Huddersfield against 

St Helens and scored 

in the corner with the 

last play of the game, 

recently appointed skipper 

Kevin Sinfield’s touchline 

conversion sending the game 

into extra time, the first time 

that had happened. With 

two minutes left, McGuire 

supported Sinfield’s break 

to round Darren Albert and 

take the Rhinos to Cardiff in 

the most dramatic fashion. 

There, Rob Burrow was 

preferred to McGuire by 

coach Daryl Powell, in his 

last season, and Leeds 

agonisingly went down 

22-20 to Bradford with new 

signing Gary Connolly given 

the Lance Todd trophy in 

defeat, the Rhinos’ first 

loss of the season in ten 

matches. Mark Calderwood 

claimed a hat trick at home 

to Widnes and another over 

Huddersfield – finishing the 

campaign with 25 – on an 

afternoon when Sinfield 

took over the kicking duties. 

New signing from Halifax, 

Andrew Dunemann, knocked 

over the winning drop goal 

at Castleford and did the 

same at Wakefield. Wigan 

were held to a 24-all draw 

both home and away, 

but the first SL downing 

came at Odsal towards 

the end of May in front 

of almost 22,000 fans.

scored a wonder try at 

Saints - and Francis 

Cummins all signed contract 

extensions, Jonny Hepworth 

making his sole appearance

victory at Hull to put the side 

back on top but a narrow 

late defeat to the Bulls, with 

Headingley packed, saw 

Leeds drop back to second, 

where they would finish the 

season. Liam Botham made 

his debut in a loss at Cas 

before another sensational 

clash back at Odsal ended 

in a one-point defeat. 

A fifth defeat of the 

campaign to the Bulls in 

the Qualifying Semi-Final 

set up a home game with 

Wigan to qualify for Old 

Trafford, which turned out 

to be the most astonishing 

eliminator in Super League 

history. It was settled by 

a Danny Tickle drop goal 

three minutes from time 

after Burrow and Brian 

Carney had each claimed 

a brace of touchdowns, 

the Irish winger’s longrange 

efforts to start and 

finish the try scoring the 

difference. McGuire was 

selected at fullback and 

had a telepathic connection 

with Burrow in only the 

fourth game they started 

together that season.

Leeds Rhinos Women 

made history last week, 

alongside St Helens, as the 

first teams ever to play 

in a Women’s Challenge 

Cup Final at Wembley. 

With the first final eleven 

years ago being played in 

front of a couple of hundred 

people at Dewsbury’s Crown 

Flatt ground, the fact that 

this year’s final was staged 

at the national stadium is 

seen as a huge development 

for the Women’s game. 

Leeds were unable to come 

away with the win, despite 

tries from Sophie Robinson 

and Caitlin Beevers, but 

for the club, players and 

coaches there was still an 

immense amount of pride 

for the team playing their 

part in the historic game. 

Leeds Rhinos head coach 

Lois Forsell said: “Having 

been involved in the first 

Women’s Challenge Cup as 

a player, back then I could 

only have dreamed about 

being involved in a Final at 

Wembley. It was an honour 

to lead out the team and we 

were all proud to play our 

part in the historic game. 

“It shows just how far the 

women’s game has come 

to be on the same stage as 

the men’s final, which has so 

much history at the stadium. 

It was reward for all the hard 

work that not only the teams 

playing on the day had done, 

but all the groundwork that 

players and staff from past 

generations have done to pave 

the way for this opportunity. 

“Of course we were 

disappointed to not win, St 

Helens were the better team 

on the day. There were spells 

of the game where we could 

be proud of our efforts, but 

we gave ourselves too much 

to do after we conceded two 

tries in quick succession. We 

will stick together, we are 

a good, tight group and we 

know we will be better for 

this experience come the end 

of the year. We have a lot of 

young players and this was 

their first experience of a 

big game and to do that at 

Wembley they have got to be 

proud. Losing the game gives 

you hunger to better and to 

do more and now we look 

ahead to the Grand Final.” 

Vice-captain, Caitlin Beevers, 

who scored a spectacular 

second half try, said: “It 

was hearbreaking not to 

get the win but history 

was made for the women’s 

game and that is certainly 

something we are proud of. 

“I think both teams made it 

a fantastic spectacle, fitting 

of the occasion, and proved 

why we deserve to be playing 

in stadiums like Wembley. 

It’s fantastic that they have 

booked Wembley for the next 

two years for both men and 

women and that is huge for 

the game. It is getting to the 

point where things like this will 

keep happening so we are just 

hoping next for Old Trafford!”

names in the history books. 

This was a big moment in our 

sport and it’s exciting to see

Final said: “As a club, it was 

a significant day to see our 

team run out at Wembley 

and one that filled us all with 

pride. The Women’s team 

was formed just six years 

ago and in that short space 

of time they have achieved 

so much, not only in terms 

of silverware but also in 

inspiring younger generations. 

“In our team are young players 

who were motivated to play 

after watching Lois lift the 

Cup in 2018 and now those 

same players have had the 

chance to play at Wembley 

and feature live on the BBC.”

hurt for a while. But win or lose, as 

Courtney Winfield-Hill once said 

‘we stick together’ and there’s no 

other team I’d rather do it with. I’m 

so grateful to have been part of 

creating history and even better to 

do it with this club. I remember in 

2018 watching some of the players 

I’ve played alongside lifting the 

Challenge Cup trophy and saying 

to my mum ‘can you imagine being 

a part of that, it would be a dream 

come true’ and this club have made 

every dream and more a reality 

over the years, so for that I keep 

pushing myself more and more 

to be the best player I can be.
