Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Avalon Coffee on Bayshore Road in North Cape May — 

it’s in the same shopping center as Gusto Brewing Company and the 

post office. Timothy DeSalis took over management at this franchise 

location earlier this year and they’re still serving up the fresh bagels and 

coffee we all know and love. 

The vibe: It was a quiet Monday morning when we first arrived to 

order some breakfast. They serve fresh bagels every morning, but what’s 

left over from the day before are sold in bulk to take home, so nothing is 

wasted. The cooler is stocked with beverages and coffee is hot and ready 

to pour. You can take your food to go like we did or grab a table and enjoy 

it there. The line quickly grew while we waited for our sandwiches, and 

we had a run-in with EZ server and manager Chris Piergiovanni. This is 

one of his favorite stops on his way to work at Ferry Park. 

The food: Kayla and Nicole kept things simple this morning. Kayla 

went for an egg and cheese sandwich on a plain bagel while Nicole had 

egg whites and cheese on a plain bagel. As we mentioned, everything 

is made fresh, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait too long for your 

order. We also ordered a couple of iced coffees to help kick off the work 

week. Those came out right away and the sandwiches followed maybe 

5-10 minutes later. While our orders were simple, they’ve got plenty to 

choose from when ordering breakfast or lunch. Enjoy bagels with cream 

cheese flavors that include strawberry, garlic and herb, plain or veggie. 

Enjoy pork roll, bacon, turkey sausage or scrapple on your breakfast 

sandwiches, or grab something from their deli selections like chicken 

salad or roasted turkey. And don’t forget to add tater tots to your order! 

The takeaway: Start your workday with a coffee and a bagel, grab 

a sandwich before heading to the beach or pick up a bagel tray for your 

next gathering. They also have whole or ground beans for purchase, 

so you can bring Avalon Coffee home from vacation with you. They’re 

open daily from 7am-2pm (1pm on Sundays) — get there early to avoid 

the line, these bagels are popular!

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Easily overlooked amid the flood of 

southbound migrants are the flocks 

of herons and egrets that have also 

called it a breeding season and are 

heading south. With us since March, 

these elegant wading birds are a fixture in our 

marshes through the summer months. Also 

common when John James Audubon collected 

and painted here. By the early 1900s, the birds 

were all but gone, shot out by market gunners 

to meet the demands of the millinery trade 

that flourished in New York and Paris and 

served the vanity of fashionable Victorian 

ladies. Protected by international treaty, the 

recovery of our wading birds is documented 

by Witmer Stone in his treatise “Bird Studies 

at Old Cape May” (1937). The current status 

of Great and Snowy Egret, Little Blue Heron 

and Tricolored Heron is documented in David 

Sibley’s “The Birds of Cape May” (1997). 

Sibley also includes bar graphs showing seasonal 

abundance which clearly demonstrates 

an uptick of Little Blue and Tricolored Heron 

in August. 

What Sibley does not portray is the near 

abundance of migrating White Ibis whose 

flocks will be seen from the Hawk Watch 

platform through the fall. Once a southern 

breeder, these striking, droop-billed marsh 

birds were accounted rare and irregular until 

recently. Now breeding in the Ocean City 

rookery, among other places, the birds seem 

to outnumber the migrating flocks of Glossy 

Ibis that flourish here. 

Why the change? Unknown, but presumably 

the birds are exploiting changing conditions. 

Not shooting them for lady’s headgear, 

certainly supports a range expansion. But 

from now until October, migrating herons, 

ibis and egrets will be regular fly-bys at the 

Hawk Watch Platform. Bunker Pond and 

South Cape May support feeding birds in the 

shallows. If you watch, you’ll note that the 

different species have different feeding techniques. 

Ibis are steady probers. Great Egrets, 

the stately stalkers. Snowy Egrets, frantic 

fish-chasers. Little Blue Herons, bushwhackers, 

masters of the stand and stab. Tri-colored 

Herons are ninjas, crouching and stalking. As 

such, they are the toughest heron to get in the 

World Series of Birding. At low tide, they are 

deep in tidal creeks, out of sight. 

“The Sibley Guide to Birds” offers some of 

the best depictions of the wading birds but for 

identification purposes almost any guide will 

do and for beginning birders, herons play fair, 

standing in the open where they are easily 

viewed, and distinguishing field marks noted.

Reviews here mention my “Flix 

You Missed” podcast a lot (at 

flixyoumissed.com). That got me 

thinking about other movie-centric 

podcasts. These may surprise you. 

Some broadcasts “rewatch” past TV 

shows or movies. My wife, Jacquie, listens to 

“The Rewatcher,” which retells every episode 

of the TV show Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. Two 

hosts, Ash Kelley and Alaina Urquart, talk 

about the romances (or breakups), plot twists, 

and action of the show. They liberally make 

commentary throughout. 

“That’s a thing?” you ask. Their thousands 

of subscribers think so. The listeners love the 

hilarious banter of these two, and they love 

Buffy, which ended 20 years ago after seven 

seasons. Back then, I was surprised that my 

dad was a big fan of the TV show. He didn’t 

generally like sci-fi or vampire stories, but 

he enjoyed watching the unassuming Buffy 

(Sarah Michelle Gellar) kicking the daylights 

out of nasty demons! Funny.

in the 1920s who painted glow-in-dark clocks 

using radium and no protection. Disney+ 

original Togo (2019) features a dog sled team 

bold enough to stop a pandemic. The story 

of a devastating shark attack after the WWII 

destruction of the USS Indianapolis in the 

Philippine Sea was brilliantly retold by Robert 

Shaw in the 1975 blockbuster Jaws. 

Shout out to a favorite podcast that could 

easily provide inspiration to screenwriters! 

“The Secret Room” is hosted by the wonderfully 

thoughtful and insightful Ben Hamm. 

Guests reveal compelling and sometimes very 

dark secrets from their past. These secrets 

have never been told to another soul. 

Hamm is that worthy soul! He’s an expert 

interviewer because he is first a skilled listener.

The age of Aquarius is returning to Cape 

May with “Capestock, 3 Days of Peace 

and Music on the Beach.” This music 

festival, like the original “Woodstock 

Music and Art Fair,” promotes positive 

energy. Last year, attendees — most of whom 

were, of course, far too young to have attended 

the first “Aquarian Exposition” in 1969 — 

brought their tie-dye tee shirts and beach chairs 

to enjoy tributes to Jefferson Airplane, Janis 

Joplin, The Who, Mountain, Santana and more. 

The generation that first claimed that harmony 

— the people who were never going to 

trust anyone over 30 — is over 75 years old 

now, and science has proven them right about 

at least one thing: music really can make you 

feel better. It’s good for you to hum along to the 

tunes of the Woodstock musicians, and to those 

of their peers. The songs are familiar, no matter 

your age. Though Sly and the Family Stone’s 

“Everyday People” was the only number one hit 

of the festival, the artists who played at Yasgur’s 

Farm have left an indelible mark on American 

culture. The music is featured on television and 

movie soundtracks from Love Island, Family Guy, 

Goodfellas, The Big Lebowski, Apocalypse Now and 

The Beanie Bubble. The music of The Who introduces 

every incarnation of CSI, and a Target 

commercial features Crosby, Stills and Nash. 

Hum along to amp up the good vibes and 

you can reduce your blood pressure. It’s not just 

a far-out fantasy or a psychedelic daydream. 

According to the Mayo Clinic, humming calms 

us by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous 

system. It’s most effective if you sit down and 

concentrate on the Bhramari — or bee breath 

— technique taught in yoga classes, but humming 

along to any tune can help. Humming 

increases nitric oxide, a bronchodilator, so you 

can take deep breaths, and the increased air 

flow to your sinuses can help to keep them clear. 

Imaging studies show that humming reduces 

activity in areas of the brain associated with 

depression. Add in the nostalgia this particular 

music evokes, and you have the makings of a 

great mood. 

Capestock runs August 18th to 20th. Music 

starts Friday at 4pm and Saturday and Sunday 

at 2pm on the beach directly behind Convention 

Hall. A three-day pass is $150; a Saturday pass 

is $75, and a Friday or Sunday pass is $45. Visit

I became a vegetarian about five years 

ago. The problem is my husband is a personal 

chef to a corporate executive. Comfort food is 

his specialty. When we entertain, he insists 

on making food with meat — everything from 

elaborate salads with bacon to martinis with 

— bacon, to BBQ pulled pork with no option 

for me or anyone else not so meat inclined. I 

have pointed this out to him many times, but 

he sweetly says, “I have to follow my gut.”

which I also wanted. It was a rare opportunity 

for both of us, but he didn’t even want to talk 

about it. One day, he was just gone. I hadn’t 

seen or heard from him until this summer. 

He’s now working from home and bought a 

home in Cape May. We ran into each other at 

the Brown Room and have been happily dating 

since. My family is furious with me and think 

I’m opening myself up for rejection again. I 

disagree. What can I say to make them like 

him because I assure you, wedding bells are in

the shelter as a stray. It takes a little patience 

to get him to relax, but once he’s comfortable, 

he loves to be pet. He loves to walk and wander 

the yard, sniffing everything in his path. 

Cheddar needs to be with a family that understands 

his defensiveness and work with food 

resource guarding. 

TASHA is a gentle, two-year-old beauty who 

was came to the shelter when her family could 

no longer care for her. She loves to be with 

people and play in the yard. Tasha is patient 

with children and other animals but will need 

a slow introduction to other cats and dogs. A 

quiet and understanding family would be best 

for this sweet girl. 

CARAMEL came to the shelter when her 

owner could no longer care for her. She is a 

sweet and gentle soul who is looking for a 

family to show her the love she deserves. Caramel 

is a bit nervous who looks to her human 

for guidance. She needs a slow introduction to 

dogs and cats, but is good with children. Caramel 

would make a wonderful companion.

untreated URI. His vision is quite poor, but

cat. If you’d like to give this sweet boy a second

STITCH was brought to the shelter because 

he was a bit too rough for his senior owner 

but has been very pleasant and sweet since he 

arrived. This kitty is definitely worth coming 

to meet! Stitch is up to date on all vaccinations 

and neutered. He has the potential to be 

a loving companion for an adult home with no
