Entrepreneur Internship Program
Students Gain Unique Experience Through
Entrepreneur Internship Program
The Lubar School’s Entrepreneur
Internship Program continues to
gain a strong reputation among
business students and partner companies
participating in the program.
Established in 2002 with seed funding
from the Ewing Marion Kauffman
Foundation, UWM’s program has placed
56 students in a wide variety of
entrepreneurial fi rms — including
internet, manufacturing, service, and
high-tech ventures. Upon graduation, a
number of students have become fulltime
employees of the fi rms with which
they interned.
“The program is designed to give students
hands-on experience and personal insight
into running an entrepreneurial
enterprise,” said Dean and Bostrom
Prasad. “It also provides our partner
companies with highly qualifi ed interns
who work on a variety of business projects
— many of them quite strategic in nature,
such as business plans, marketing plans
or fi nancial analysis.”
“My internship provided me with an
opportunity to test myself and see if
entrepreneurship is a viable option for
me,” said Jon Ferch, who served as
General Manager of Optimal Handling
Solutions during his internship, with
responsibilities for marketing, sales,
accounting, and collection. Optimal
Handling Solutions is a materials handling
supplier with a strong internet presence.
“If not for this program, I don’t know how
I could have gained invaluable business
experience like this.”
“It’s fantastic to take these students,
expose them to the nuts and bolts of an
entrepreneurial business, and see what
they can do,” said Ferch’s internship host,
Jim Hunter, President of MII Equipment,
Inc. and Jon Ferch’s entrepreneur mentor
during his internship. “I’ve been very
impressed by students like Jon who have
stepped up to the plate and really showed
results. It’s a ‘give and take’ for both the
intern and the company.”
The Entrepreneur Internship Program
complements the School’s undergraduate
Entrepreneurship Certifi cate program and
MBA program emphasis in entrepreneurship.
The UWM chapter of the Collegiate
Entrepreneurs Organization offers
additional networking and professional
development opportunities for students
interested in exploring entrepreneurship.
