Celebrating 60 Years!

How far we’ve come…
The Rhodes Commonwealth Centre opened its doors in 1963,
providing the community of Bishop’s Stortford with a performance
space, civic assembly hall and exhibition space.
Throughout the 60’s and beyond, the arts centre became a hub for
live music, hosting such greats as David Bowie and the Buzz, The
Who, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd and Rod Stewart to name just a few.
Since then, South Mill Arts has grown, not just structurally, to include
meeting rooms and a dance studio, but with the productions it has to
offer.
South Mill Arts is home to drama, comedy, musical theatre,
community productions and the much beloved annual pantomime.
Not to forget the Bishop’s Stortford Museum, which is situated
within South Mill Arts in the original Nettleswell House. The museum
provides art and heritage for Stortfordians and is committed to
bringing history alive with its extensive collection and regular events.
We are so proud of how far South Mill Arts has come and are
delighted to be celebrating 60 years. South Mill Arts has always been
at the heart of the local community and continues to drive forwards,
facing new challenges and always with our residents at the forefront
of what we do.
Finally, a thank you to everyone who has supported South Mill Arts
throughout the years. All of our work is reliant on your help, to keep
us growing and bringing the best to our community. If you would like

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes?
Take a workshop with our technical manger and
discover how we achieve the magic on stage!
South Mill Arts is very much a community venue,
and so we’re happy to announce that we will be
looking to run some technical theatre workshops
for members of the public and local groups as a
way to give back to the local community. These
workshops will serve as an accessible way for
people to get some hands-on experience in
learning about the different departments involved
within technical theatre, such as lighting, sound
and stage management, with no previous theatre
experience required.
