OUR PEOPLE, OUR MISSION Global Health eMagazine August 2023 Highlights Spotlight Eulogy for Dr. Menn A Young Leader with a Global Vision We Lost a Dear Friend In Memoriam: Prachyapan Petchuay, MD, PhD “Pee Menn” 18th March 1966 - 21st July 2023 Written by Hamish Horsley with Stephen Scholand Clinical Case of the Month Reflections Global Mental Health Hispanic/Latinx Communities Voices of Ugandan Students Our Beautiful Planet Innovation and Technology Nursing Division Art to Remind Us of Who We Can Be Dr Menn – affectionately known as “Pee Menn” or ‘brother hedgehog’ – was a wonderful and compassionate man. He was a doctor, a surgeon, a mentor, a teacher, a colleague, a brother, a family man and a Great Soul. He was the key figure in the development of the Thai Global Health site for Nuvance Health. Dr. Menn served as the Dean of Walailak Medical School for almost 20 years, until an untimely diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer in March 2022 devastated all of us. He fought bravely – for 15 months - supported by a dedicated team of doctors (all friends and colleagues), initially at the Prince of Songkhla University Hospital in Hat Yai, then at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok. His courage and endurance became almost legendary. Sadly, he passed from this world in the early hours of Friday 21st July, aged 57. For a while it seemed as if he would reach remission thanks to cutting edge immunotherapy, but unfortunately the cancer struck back with an unstoppable fury that not even the most advanced treatments could halt. Accepting his fate, Dr. Menn made one last medical referral; his own, to the Marahraj Hospital in his southern Thailand hometown of Nakhon si Thammarat where he requested ‘end of life care’. Though paralyzed from a new tumor in the spine, he was determined to return home and was subsequently transferred by ambulance for a 12 hour journey through the night. His last few days were then spent in the very hospital where his medical career began and where his much loved family and many friends could see him and bid him farewell. He increasingly focused on meditation, preparing himself for the journey ahead. His accomplishments were tremendous. As a star student at Nakhon si Thammarat’s Benjamarachutit College, he was granted a scholarship to study Medicine at Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital Bangkok, the ‘Harvard’ of Thailand. He completed his Residency Training in General Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine Chulalongkorn University, gained a MSc from the University of Wales College of Medicine and a PhD in Medical Education from the University of Birmingham – a masterly work of scholarship that set out his theories in reflective learning and teaching medicine in the modern world. Along with being a dedicated surgeon and medical practitioner, he was a pioneering Dean of Medicine at Walailak University’s School of Medicine, worked extensively on the University’s new teaching hospital, was a long-time member of the Medical Council of Thailand, a leader of the Thailand - Nuvance Health Global Health site, an advisor and associate on countless committees and a dedicated member of the Wat Phu Khao Lak Buddhist community. Further afield, he was a proud honoree member of Scotland’s Clan MacLeod (confirmed on him by the Chief) and a much loved member of the Horsley clan in New Zealand – his ‘second family and home’. Whether local or national, he regarded it as the underlying cause of the many ills in Thailand’s development and his uncompromising stance often brought him difficulties. 43 Dr. Menn continued on next page >>
