HEAD COACH
ROHAN SMITH
Welcome back to Headingley for this
afternoon’s visit of Leigh Leopards
and a double header of Super League
action with our womens team taking on
Huddersfield Giants before our game.
3 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
Firstly, on behalf of everyone at the club,
I would like to wish Lois Forsell and her
team all the best for next week’s final
at Wembley. It is rare that you get the
chance to be the first people to achieve
something and I hope that the team will be
inspired when they walk out at Wembley
next week and can bring the Challenge
Cup back to Headingley. The team have
had to deal with adversity with injuries,
changes to the squad and suspensions
but that will only serve to galvanise
them for the challenge against Saints.
Likewise, I would like to wish Leigh Leopards
the best of luck for their final at Wembley.
It is a remarkable achievement in their
first season back in Super League but
not a surprise given how well they have
adapted to life in the top division. They
have a real identity as a squad and a
club and I am sure their supporters will
thoroughly enjoy the unique experience of
going to Wembley. In particular, I would
like to wish our former players in the
Leigh squad all the best for Wembley.
Looking back on last week’s loss at St
Helens, it was disappointing that we could
not get the win having put ourselves in
a good position. We had opportunities
and position on the field to create some
more points but we were not able to
execute. It was one of those where the
bounce of the ball went the other way a
little bit. You can get a bit of luck on those
or they go the other way but we have
to continue to work hard to make sure
we take the chances when they come.
The transfer deadline this week has created
some challenges for us. Blake Austin has
left the club to join Castleford Tigers and
we wish him well. He requested the move
with his contract up at the end of the
season, and we agreed to it. Toby Warren
has returned to York Knights on loan for
the remainder of the season. With just
two more Reserves games this season, it
is a chance for Toby to gain more game
experience in an environment he knows well.
Finally, with today’s game being our Armed
Forces match, I would like to thank all our
service men and women who are with us
today for all their sacrifices on behalf of the
country, I hope you enjoy your afternoon.
Enjoy the game
Rohan

RECORD NUMBER OF
PLAYERS SIGN FIRST
PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTS
WITH THE RHINOS
A club record of fifteen Scholarship players have signed professional
contracts with the Rhinos, ensuring that some of the game’s
brightest young talents will remain at the club for the next stage of
their Rugby League development.
Marcus Qareqare, Callum
Webster, Alex Cowley,
Dylan Hutchinson, Dax
Millington, Joe Butterfield,
Presley Cassell, Harry
Smith, Jayemm Oladipupo,
Jacob Stead, Elliott Fox,
Lore Jones-Buchanan,
Harley Thomas, Joe Diskin
and Noah Whittingham
have all committed their
future to Leeds and will
move into the Under-18s
squad for 2024.
Lock Lane has the most
representatives out of
the fifteen new signings,
with seven players making
the next step through
the club’s youth pathway.
Marcus Qareqare and
Callum Webster finished
this season as two of the
Scholarship’s top try scorers
and they are joined by team
mates Noah Whittingham,
Alex Cowley, Dylan
Hutchinson, Dax Millington
and Joe Butterfield.
West Bowling quartet
Presley Cassell, Harry
Smith, Jayemm Oladipupo
and Jacob Stead, who
helped their club win the
Under-16s BARLA National
Cup last month, have been
rewarded for their efforts
with contracts. Local side
Stanningley, who have
regularly seen players
rise through the ranks
at the Rhinos, are also
represented by Elliott Fox
and Lore Jones-Buchanan.
Finally Dewsbury Celtic’s
Harley Thomas and Joe
Diskin, son of four-time
Grand Final winner Matt
Diskin, have both earned
the opportunity to continue
their development with
the club, having scored
six tries each this year.
John Bastian, Leeds Rhinos
Head of Youth, said: “It is
fantastic to see so many
talented young players
making the next step in
their Rugby League journey
with us. We want every one
of these players to have a
purpose at Leeds Rhinos
and challenge themselves
to be a first-grade player.
“The club has always
been a huge advocate of
youth development going
back thirty, forty or fifty
years. I think investing
in homegrown players is
important for the game
in this country and the
supporters recognise and
connect with these local
players and have pride in
our youth development.”
Mark Butterill, Leeds Rhinos
Scholarship Head Coach,
added: “We have a really
strong cohort. That’s
testimony to John Bastian,
Simon Bell and Barry Eaton
because they’ve done the
spade work and been out
there on a Sunday morning
at junior matches looking
out for players to join our
pathway. I’m excited to see
where this group can go.”
“On the field, I’ve
never seen Jayemm
have a bad game. I
think he’s in the top
three front rowers in
the country for his
age. He carries tough
and is a big unit
with good footwork
need as a prop in
the modern game.
“Marcus is quick,
strong and tough.
He’s played a lot at
centre this season,
which I think has
accelerated his
development because
he has been able to
tackle more as well
as improve his talk
and leadership.”
“I don’t think I’ve seen
a scrum half as good
as Harry for a long
while. I’ve watched
him quite a lot this
year in his community
games and he leads
his side around the
field, much like he
does at Leeds.”
“Jacob is an oldfashioned,
hardrunning
Nothing fazes him,
he just gets on
IN MEMORIAM
11 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
Barry Gregory was a Member of the Headingley
Taverners’ Club for over 40 years and his
father, George was a Founding Member back
in 1965 and used to host parties at his home
for the Leeds RL players and Directors after
Saturday afternoon games at Headingley
in the 1950s and 60s. This was a good
introduction for Barry as a young boy and he
was to become a fervent fan thereafter.
Prior to our last home game, we
learned of the passing of Hall of Fame
member Bev Risman OBE, aged 85.
Born in Salford on 23rd November 1937
into a famous Rugby League family but
brought up in Cumbria, Augustus Beverley
Walter Risman, or Bev to all who knew him,
first made his name in Rugby Union when
he made his debut for England in 1959
before earning a place in the British and
Irish Lions tour squad to New Zealand.
In March 1961 despite the advances of
Leeds, Risman opted for Leigh where he
gained legendary status before arriving
at Headingley five years later.
His input to success at the start of the second
Leeds golden era was key, not least with his
exceptional goal kicking – the leading exponent in
the game from 1967-69, with a high of 165 goals.
Selected as skipper of the 1968 Great Britain
World Cup squad, he appeared five times
for his country and once for England
Roy Berwick celebrated his 90th birthday
recently after touring the Rhinos heritage
imagery at Headingley which he really
enjoyed. It brought back many memories
for Roy from his first visit in the 1930s. He
was in the record 40,167 crowd in 1947 when
Leeds v Bradford Northern fought out a
2-all draw and he had been a Member and
Season Ticket holder for over 70-years.
We will miss Bev, Barry and Roy

RUGBY LEAGUE DEVELOPMENT
PLAN CONTINUING TO HELP
GROW COMMUNITY GAME
13 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
Hundreds of young people
and coaches have taken
part in rugby competitions
and workshops with Leeds
Rhinos Foundation over the
last three months through
the charity’s Rugby League
Development Plan.
104 girls competed
in Secondary School
competitions and 227 girls at
Primary School have taken
part in either Tag Qualifiers
and Finals or the new RugBees
programme for young players
starting out. At Secondary
School, 645 boys also took
part in the Rhinos 9s Finals.
As well as the participation
of players, the charity has
also focussed on upskilling
coaches, with 82 coaches
attending workshops and a
further 41 coaches receiving
outreach CPD provision. 30
coaches have completed their
level one qualifications and 38
have received their level two,
plus there has been further
opportunities to get bespoke
coaching development on the
North vs South programme.
The Rhinos Talent Pathway
(RTP) continues to go from
strength to strength, with over
500 players from year 7 to 9
taking part in RTP activity.
Darren Higgins, Rugby League
Development Manager at
Leeds Rhinos Foundation,
said: “It has been a strong
end to the Academic year
for the Rugby League
Development Plan delivery
and we are pleased with the
number of players coming
through and engaging
with our programmes.
The initiatives we have
in place now are a good
foundation for us to support
the game at grassroots
level, not only through the
development of players
by offering opportunities
for them to play and be
coached, but it also shows
our commitment to helping
coaches upskill and progress
their coaching ambitions.
“We have an exciting summer
of rugby coming up, with
more RTP sessions and the
North vs South games. Plus
we have camps for young
children to give the sport
a try. I would like to thank
clubs and schools for their
buy-in with the Rugby League
Development Plan. It is great
to see all areas of the game
coming together and working
towards the same goals,
which can only help strengthen
A chance to recognise those who became South Stand heroes for their memorable
exploits in blue and amber no matter their length of service.
TERRY WEBB
Following the lifting of the international
ban prior to the 1983-84 season, on the
recommendation of Queensland great Arthur
Beetson and Kangaroo coach Frank Stanton,
Leeds signed Redcliffe back rower Terry Webb.
It soon became obvious that the Brisbane
representative’s work rate was not only going
to make him an extremely popular teammate
who would lift the overall standard but that
he would also rally the crowd. He came off the
bench in a loss at Hull but was instrumental
on the road to winning the John Player trophy,
playing 24 times and scoring ten tries in his
first season. Initially signed on a one year
deal, he was quickly offered an extension.
The following season he helped lead the side
to semi finals in both the John Player and
Premiership, appearing 33 times. Heartbreak
came in his final year when the Loiners were
so close to Wembley after initially drawing
24-all in the semi final against Hull KR at
Elland Road, in which he dropped a goal,
but they lost the replay 17-0. In all, he pulled
on the blue and amber 80 times, scoring
19 tries and landing three one-pointers.
With David Ward retiring and moving on
to be the coach at Hunslet, Webb delayed
returning home and followed him across the
city, was appointed captain and led the side
to the second division title and the Divisional
Premiership final at Old Trafford where they
went down to Swinton, although he was
out injured. Tempted to stay on for a further
year after promotion, he made another 25
appearances and scored his first two tries
for the club in a high scoring draw with
Swinton. He returned to Redcliffe, coached
there for a spell and joined the board in 1994.
He oversaw the winning of three State
League titles and was part of putting the
application together that saw the Dolphins
become the NRL’s 17th team, based there.

ADRIAN MORLEY
CULT HEROES
Leeds knew they had signed a tyro
from Salford junior rugby when Adrian
Morley joined their academy ranks, but
not the incredible impact he would go
on to have on both sides of the world.
Making his debut as a teenage second
rower in 1995 in a win over Hull as the
club was about to enter a rebuilding
phase, he came of age under head
coach Graham Murray, appearing
in the 1998 Grand Final and winning
the Challenge Cup the following year.
His aggressive, uncompromising style
was best summed up by a running
battle he had with Mick Cassidy in a
memorable win at Central Park.
He was on the losing side for Leeds at
Murrayfield in 2000 before following
Murray to the NRL, winning a Grand
Final with Sydney Roosters and coming
back to become the first player in
the Super League era to claim rings
in both professional competitions
when guesting for Bradford against
Leeds at Old Trafford in 2005.
Moving back to play with Warrington,
he added another three Challenge
Cup winners’ medals, having become
a world class prop, although he was
on the losing side to the Rhinos in the
2012 Grand Final, ending his career full
circle at Salford. His reputation was
further enhanced internationally as
one of the few players the Kangaroos
genuinely feared. He was selected for
either England or Great Britain on 53
occasions, earning him a golden cap.
Morley's most notorious on-field
incident was a sending off just 12
seconds into a 2003 Ashes Test against
the Kangaroos, for a high tackle on
Robbie Kearns. He retired at the end of
2015 but had a swan song in front of
a full house at Headingley as a guest
player when the treble-winning Rhinos
took on the New Zealand tourists.
At Leeds he played 149 matches and
scored 35 tries, coming back for a
season as academy coach in 2017.
LEEDS RHINOS WOMEN
ARE GOING TO WEMBLEY!
19 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
On 12th August, Leeds Rhinos Women
will make history alongside St Helens
as the first Women’s teams to compete
in the Betfred Women’s Challenge
Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.
This will be the fourth time the Rhinos have
made it through to the Final and they will be
aiming to get their hands on the trophy they
last won in 2019. The Wembley showdown
is a replay of last year’s Final when Saints
secured the silverware at Elland Road.
For Rhinos player Amy Hardcastle, who
was part of that winning St Helens
side, the chance to play at the national
stadium will be extra special.
“It’s emotional thinking what it means to
get to Wembley, especially with it being
Saints and us to be the first women’s
Super League teams to play there,” said
the England international. “For me at
34 to say I have played at Wembley will
be amazing. I’m not sure it’s quite sunk
in yet, but I think when I am there that’s
when it will hit me and feel real.”
Rhinos head coach Lois Forsell said it is a
significant milestone for the game to have
a Wembley Final and a big achievement
for some of the players who have worked
hard over the years to grow the game.
“During the semi final, we did it tough
against Wigan and you could see after half
time what it meant to the girls to have
the chance to make it to Wembley as we
had to regroup to get the job done,” she
said. “We want to be history makers and
winners and are looking forward to the
opportunity to play at that famous stadium.
“I think it’s great for young players coming
through to see what it means to be at
that elite level, but for players like Amy and
Hanna Butcher and Shona Hoyle and Jodie
Cunningham at St Helens, this is just reward
for paving that way, so it’s well deserved that
they will be part of this historic occasion.”
Rhinos half back, Caitlin Casey will be
one of the young stars looking to play in
her first Cup Final in her debut season.
“We have worked really hard towards this
goal and to book our place is just great,”
she said. “Last year when I was playing in
the Championship I didn’t really imagine
I would be playing at Wembley this year.
I know a lot of the girls who have been
around the game a while are still really
excited. To have the Final held on the
same day as the men’s shows the women’s
game is heading in the right direction
and it means the sport is growing.”
Tickets and travel are on sale for the
fixture from tickets.therhinos.co.uk.
Tickets cover both the women’s game,
which kicks off at 11.50am and the
men’s game which starts at 3pm.

ON THIS DAY
6 th August
On this day in years gone by, Leeds sides
have faced local opposition, competed in
their first ever Qualifiers match and held
on to defeat Warrington on home soil.
23 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
1999
LEEDS RHINOS 34 WARRINGTON WOLVES 30
Only four points separated the Rhinos
and Wolves as the 1999 Super League
campaign approached its climax, but a
Paul Sterling inspired display helped the
home side to victory. The winger recorded
his second hat trick in four games when
Warrington came to town, whilst Andy
Hay’s two tries and a score from Marc
Glanville helped Leeds over the line.
2016
FEATHERSTONE ROVERS 6 LEEDS RHINOS 62
Leeds’ first-ever fixture in the Qualifiers
came on this day as Brian McDermott’s
side convincingly beat Featherstone
Rovers with eleven tries. Kallum Watkins
was the ringleader as the centre crossed
four times to take his total for the
season to 14, plus Liam Sutcliffe and Joel
Moon scored twice each. Tom Briscoe,
Carl Ablett and Mitch Achurch added
further tries in the resounding 62-6
win as the Rhinos went on to secure
their Super League status for 2017.
2021
LEEDS RHINOS 18 CASTLEFORD TIGERS 32
Two years ago at Headingley, the Rhinos
suffered back-to-back home losses in the
league with a 32-18 defeat to local rivals
Castleford Tigers. Even though the away
side established a 14-0 lead early on, the sin
binning of Peter Mata’utia for a dangerous
tackle on Ash Handley saw Leeds quickly
close the scoreline either side of half time,
thanks to tries from Rob Lui and Handley.
Jordan Turner and Greg Eden responded
for the Fords but even though
Brad Dwyer’s try gave
the home side hope,
former Rhino Jimmy
Keinhorst rounded
off the scoring
in the corner to
give the Tigers
the points.

CLASSIC CLASH LEIGH LEOPARDS
In each edition of Blue and
Amber this season, we’ve dug
into the archives to highlight
a memorable classic clash.
For tonight’s opponents Leigh
Leopards, we are rewinding
the clock to the first Super
League meeting between
the two sides in 2005…
Having run out 60-4 winners
against Leigh only seven days
prior, Leeds Rhinos were in action
against the same opposition
at Headingley in a 42-24 win,
thanks to an outstanding first
half. The Champions were
given a fright though when
the visitors started to mount a
comeback in the second period.
After nine minutes, Richard
Mathers created the extra man
out wide to touch down in the
corner, before Willie Poching
broke the line straight from the
restart to feed Danny McGuire
to score under the posts.
Kevin Sinfield’s conversions
took the early score to 12-0.
Mark Leafa’s try for the visitors
was short-lived as the Rhinos
hit back; McGuire found Chris
McKenna who cut in from the
wing to score and then Gareth
Ellis was rewarded for his
work with a deserved try as he
brilliantly jinked his way to the line
to make the half time score 24-6.
To the surprise of the home
crowd, Leigh came roaring out
of the traps at the start of
the second half, scoring two
tries in four minutes through
Phil Jones and Dom Feaunati.
The nightmare continued for
Leeds when Leigh full back
John Wilshere broke through
the Rhinos’ cover defence to
level to game at 24-all.
McGuire’s second try of the game
woke Leeds from their slumber
as the half back supported an
interception from Poching to
give Tony Smith’s side breathing
room, but Mark Calderwood,
who scored a hat trick at
Hilton Park the week before,
wasn’t going to leave the field
without any tries. Two scores
from the winger in five minutes
was enough to seal an eighth
straight win in all competitions
for Tony Smith’s side, who
continued their battle with St
Helens at the top of the table.
What happened next?
The reigning Grand Final and
World Champions met Leigh
for a third time that season in
August as Ashley Gibson scored
four tries in a more convincing
74-0 win. The Rhinos’ momentum
continued as the club reached
its second consecutive Grand
Final, where they lost out in
a rematch with Bradford.
For Leigh, the loss at Headingley
started a winless run that lasted
until the end of the season.
During the 17-game losing streak,
the club changed coaches three
times with Tommy Martyn
replacing Darren Abram before
Heath Cruckshank took charge of
the last three games of the year.
FIRST SL MEETING
The first time the two clubs met in the
summer era was in 2005 after Leigh
were promoted out of the second tier
and Leeds celebrated becoming World
Champions for the first time. Tony
Smith’s Rhinos had only lost once since
February and a meeting with Leigh in
May saw Mark Calderwood take home
the man of the match award with three
tries in a 60-4 result.
LAST MEETING AT HEADINGLEY
During the 2021 season, the Rhinos
picked up their third win on the bounce
as Leigh were defeated 48-18. Jack
Broadbent’s four tries propelled Leeds
to success on home soil, alongside
further tries from Liam Sutcliffe, Tom
Holroyd, Kruise Leeming, Sam Walters
and James Donaldson.
LAST TIME OUT
When the two sides met earlier this
season at Leigh Sports Village, Leigh ran
out 20-6 winners as they continued their
rise up the league table. After falling
three tries behind inside 20 minutes, the
Rhinos were given a break when James
Bentley crashed over, but a close-knit
second half saw the Leopards walk
away with the win as Ben Reynolds
converted two penalty goals.
MARK CALDERWOOD
KEY
STATS
4
Leigh have four former
Leeds players included in
their 30-man squad this
year. Members of the 2015
Treble-winning side Zak
Hardaker and Tom Briscoe
made the move to the
Leopards for this season,
along with Robbie Mulhern
from Warrington, whilst
Leeds’ 2020 Challenge
Cup-winning prop Ava
Seumanufagai was signed
from NRL side Canterbury.
7
Winger Mark Calderwood
had an excellent try-scoring
record against Leigh in
Super League. During
the 2005 season, he
tormented the opposition
with three tries in the first
meeting at Hilton Park
and two in the round 14
and 23 that same year.
2
Only two drop goals have
ever been kicked by the
Rhinos against Leigh during
the summer era. After
Joel Moon’s one pointer in
2016’s Qualifiers meeting,
Liam Sutcliffe added the
second at the start of
the 2017 season to aid
Leeds to a 17-14 result.
22
Even with six rounds to
go, Josh Charnley has
set the Leigh record for
most tries scored during
a Super League season.
He’s stormed passed
Matty Dawson-Jones’
total of 12 in 2017 and is
closing in on the 24 tries
scored by both Krisnan
Inu and Nene Macdonald
for the Leopards in the
Championship last year.
LEIGH LEOPARDS
SEASON REVIEW
Wigan head coach Matt Peet summed it up
perfectly when he said: “Leigh are the story
of the season,” prior to the second 'Battle
of the Borough' last week. There is little
doubt that the Leopards have captured
hearts and minds with their sensational
performances, confounding those who
predicted they would be in a relegation
struggle on their return to Super League,
having dominated the Championship last
season, to become the best performing
promoted side of the summer era. Coming
into this round they sit joint second in the
table and looked nailed on for a play off
place, but next week they step further
into the national spotlight when they face
Hull KR at Wembley after dramatically
beating St Helens in the semi-final. It will
be their first visit to the national stadium
for 52 years, when Leeds fans won’t need
reminding Alex Murphy’s men defeated
the Loiners in a major upset. The on-field
success, built around the recruitment of a
core of vastly experienced and successful
players who have been rejuvenated, has
been on the back of an image overhaul
with the former Centurions rebranded as
the Leopards, which despite some initial
scepticism from the outside has been a
resounding success. The brainchild, drive
and resource behind it has been owner
Derek Beaumont, who is set to paint the
capital in Leopard print. Leigh will go
into the game and the remainder of the
season without star centre Ricky Leutele
who has been in outstanding form this
year and provider of a significant number
of Josh Charnley’s tries, the ex-Wigan
and Warrington flyer second in the charts
with 22 touchdowns. Earlier this week, the
club received a boost with the signing of
former Wigan player Oliver Gildart on a
deal until the end of the season. On his
signing, Head of Rugby Chris Chester said:
"Having received the bad news about Ricky
it was important that we quickly brought in
someone else of quality into the club before
the signing deadline. Oliver is a top-class
English centre who has represented his
country and although contracted elsewhere
for 2024 he is fully committed to helping
Leigh achieve their goals this season."

THE COACH
Moving across from Wigan, where he
played and took them to within a fingernail
of winning the 2020 Grand Final as coach,
Adrian Lam did the double with Leigh last
season, securing promotion and winning
the 1895 Cup at Tottenham. They were the
latest triumphs in a career full of them that
includes the Papua New Guinean playing
eleven times for his county, including
captaining them in the 2000 World Cup,
and on 14 occasions for Queensland. A
fearless scrum half, he was part of the
Sydney Roosters side that made the Grand
Final, and is the current assistant coach of
the reigning World Champion Kangaroos
under Mal Meninga. He played and scored
in the Wigan Warriors side that got to Old
Trafford in 2001. He has earned plaudits
this year for his handling of a squad that is
not as deep as others. Restricting training
to little and intense sessions to preserve his
resources has proved to be a masterstroke
as his side have the highest number of
ever-presents this season.
37 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
LEADER
Head coach Adrian Lam called for the sport to “move
on” after the controversy surrounding Leigh skipper John
Asiata’s legal tackling technique following their Cup
semi final triumph at Warrington against St Helens.
“John’s character is second to none,” Lam said of the
30-year-old who has represented both Tonga and
Samoa. “I’ve watched him as a player, person and family
man. There is no better person in this world than him
in terms of his morals and the way he plays the game.
He has no intention to ever hurt anyone. He’s a great
leader, he’s what this club is all about and he has taken
us forward into the future with his leadership.” The back
rower won an NRL Grand Final with North Queensland
in 2015 and was on the bench when the Cowboys
came to Headingley in the World Club Challenge that
followed. Director of rugby Chris Chester said of his
capture last season: “It is not often that such a quality
player becomes available on the market. Adrian and I
found out about John’s availability and acted quickly.
There were lots of clubs in the Super League and
Championship chasing his signature and so to persuade
John that his future lay at Leigh was a real team effort.”

38 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
STAR MAN
There are many who would endorse the
contention that if the Steve Prescott
Man of Steel award was to be given
out now, the prime candidate would
be Lachlan Lam. His form has been
sensational this year dictating play
in the middle of the field and, not
surprisingly, there are many suitors for
his services, not least back in the NRL
where he played for Sydney Roosters,
like his father. Leigh are hoping that,
in a further boost in their run up to
Wembley, that the 25-year-old will
sign a new deal when his current one
expires at the end of the season, having
played in all of their 23 matches to
date. He has made seven appearances
for Papua New Guinea, including in two
World Cups, scoring six tries, and can
also cover at hooker. He has crossed
for seven tries this season and last
year was instrumental in helping the
Leopards to promotion, scoring a try in
the final against Batley.
RISING STAR
Although hardly a youngster, 28-year-old
Robbie Mulhern is delivering the promise
seen in him in the Rhinos academy
system. Leeds-born, he made five senior
appearances in the blue and amber in
2014-15, all of them as a replacement,
making his debut in a big home win
over London, and also going out on
loan to Hunslet. He moved to Hull KR
to help them regain their Super League
status and was voted their Young Player
of the Year in 2018. After 110 games,
an exchange deal saw him move to
Warrington with Luis Johnson going
the other way. His two seasons with the
Wolves saw him make 47 appearances
but he has had a new lease of life at Leigh
this season, scoring his third try for the
club last week in their 44-18 loss to Wigan.
He has appeared six times for Ireland, his
last off the bench against Lebanon in the
2021 World Cup at Leigh Sports Village.

DOWN THE DECADES... 1993
The second season of Doug
Laughton’s stewardship
saw more wholesale change
leading to inconsistency and
Challenge Cup humiliation.
Part of the reason for
a shocking run up to
Christmas was the
newcomers arrived
late with the Lions
being on tour.
There was a huge blow
when David Creasser
announced his retirement
because of persistent
shoulder injuries at the
age of 27 after eight
seasons. Bath and
England ‘B’ winger Jim
Fallon signed a five-year
deal but an incident at a
pre-season training camp
saw Alan Tait arrive as
part of a swap deal with
Bobbie Goulding. Kiwi
Gary Mercer was signed
from Warrington which
saw Dave Heron end his
long association with
a move to Bradford.
A proposed deal for Karl
Fairbank failed as did a
bid for Featherstone’s
international scrum
half Deryck Fox. Halifax
signed Gary Divorty and
John Bentley, as Seamus
McCallion arrived in part
exchange. Andy Gregory
rejected terms with
Wigan and Laughton was
reunited with the player
he had signed as a junior.
Cavill Heugh moved to
Rochdale and Neil James
Sheffield, while Phil Ford
was swapped for Mick
Worrall and Andy Goodway
also captured, but there
was frustration in Australia
when Mark Geyer was
injured in a car crash
and negotiations were
protracted for Bob Lindner.
That suited Leeds when
Kevin Iro became available
at Manly. In the final
season of the Yorkshire
Cup, Fallon scored his
first try as Hunslet were
dispatched, James
Lowes playing so well
that he was snapped up.
That saw Featherstone
swoop for Richard Gunn
and Francis Maloney.
A first league win came at
home to Hull KR, but the
county cup run ended at
the Boulevard. Relegation
fears surfaced but Iro’s
debut heralded a change
in fortune, although there
was more consternation
after a hammering at
Sheffield, their first-ever
win over the Loiners.
Leeds hit form when
coming back to Headingley
after six weeks away,
winning nine consecutive
matches – Hanley the
key, scoring 12 tries in
seven games. Graham
Middleton debuted at
the Willows and Leeds
moved up to fourth. By
the time the Challenge
Cup came around,
confidence was gaining.
Third Division Barrow
were easily accounted
for, Gregory scoring his
only tries, Rochdale were
dispatched as Paul Cook
became the game’s first
apprentice to play, and a
third consecutive home
draw saw Castleford
just edged out.
The winning sequence
came to an end at home
to Wigan with 20,000
in attendance, despite it
being midweek. Two more
youngsters debuted at
home to Sheffield, Graham
Holroyd marking his with
two tries and Lee Harland
coming off the bench.
There was confidence
going into the Challenge
Cup semi final with
Widnes but, with Goulding
superb, they cantered to
an embarrassingly easy
win, Leeds’s worst ever
Challenge Cup loss. Wasps
full back Steve Pilgrim, who
had been banned for a year
for trialling with Leeds,
finally made his debut
although was subsequently
released to Halifax.
Leeds finished fifth and
went to Widnes in the
Premiership, Simon Irving
claiming two touchdowns
in the win. In the semifinal,
St Helens proved to
be their masters for the
fourth time. In Alliance
rugby, Leeds lost in the
final of the Challenge
Cup to Wigan in front of
a Headingley crowd of
3,770, while a three-man
committee, including Gary
Hetherington, looked at
the viability of moving
the sport to summer. Y
ABF THE SOLDIERS’ CHARITY
For today’s Armed Forces Game, we
welcome the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity to
Headingley to raise awareness and funds
for the work they do with the Army.
WHO WE ARE:
ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is the Army’s
national charity, providing a lifetime
of support to soldiers, veterans and
their families when they are in need.
We were formed in 1944 to ensure that
soldiers returning from World War Two
were well cared for. Since then, the
welfare of soldiers, past and present,
and their families has been at the heart
of everything we do. In the past year,
we spent £8.3m helping 60,000 people
in 63 countries around the world. This
included funding 43 other charities and
organisations that support the Army
family. We pride ourselves on acting
immediately when help is needed,
providing true through-life support for
soldiers, veterans and their immediate
families. While there is a British Army,
there will be The Soldiers’ Charity.
WHAT WE DO:
The overall scale, breadth and range
of our support is vast. We help very
young serving families cope with a
sudden bereavement or traumatic loss.
We provide wide-ranging support to
wounded soldiers, many of whom will need
increasing financial assistance for decades
to come. We provide help with housing,
education and training for employment for
soldiers and veterans of all ages. We are
there for older veterans and their widows
or widowers if they find themselves lonely
or isolated. Crucially, we act with speed.
When we are alerted
to a person or family
in need of help, we aim
to make the relevant
grant within 48 hours.
Support us and you
support the whole
Army family.
RUGBY LEAGUE
ALL SET TO
TACKLE THE
47 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
TOUGH STUFF
This week has seen the return of Tackle The Tough
Stuff, Rugby League’s annual opportunity to
focus on physical and mental wellbeing.
Running across the last two
rounds of Super League (20
and 21) clubs, players and
personalities will join forces
with organisations such
as Rugby League Cares to
highlight some of the most
pressing issues surrounding
physical and mental health.
Personalities lending their
support include Lindsey
Burrow, Liam Farrell and
Danny Kirmond, along
with Learning Disability
Super League sponsor
Community Integrated
Care, who are one of a
number of organisations
helping to spread the
message far and wide.
Rhodri Jones, RL
Commercial Managing
Director, said: “I am
delighted to see the
game once again getting
collectively behind the
drive to promote a positive
approach to physical
and mental health. It’s
another opportunity we
all have to change lives
by raising awareness,
sharing experiences and
kick-starting conversations
on difficult issues.
“And whilst we shine a
light on all that work
over the next fortnight or
so, we shouldn’t forget
that for many people
– and those working
with them – tackling the
tough stuff is a challenge
every day of the year.”
RL Cares has responsibility
for delivering player welfare
services to athletes involved
in all three professional
competitions. This
support ranges from crisis
intervention and tackling
issues such as addiction
and poor mental fitness,
to providing education
and training grants to
help players prepare for
the next stage of their
careers post-rugby.

49 | RHINOS VS LEIGH LEOPARDS
Ground-breaking and
celebrated mental fitness
programmes from RL Cares
have made a massive,
positive difference to the
lives of tens of thousands
of people in recent years.
Last year more than
30,000 young people took
part in Movember's Ahead
of the Game, a programme
delivered by RL Cares
as part of RLWC2021
Mental Fitness Charter.
The programme set out
to ensure the stars of
tomorrow grow to become
as healthy, happy and
successful as they can be,
both on and off the field.
Leeds Rhinos Head of
Player Welfare Nigel
O’Flaherty-Johnston,
explained why talking
about mental health is so
important. He commented,
“As part of my role at
the Rhinos, I take care of
players well-being right
across all our teams from
the mens and womens first
teams but also our other
teams and age grades
plus our staff as well. The
toughest message to get
over to players is often that
there is life after playing
and they have to get ready
for the next 28-30 years of
their lives even if they enjoy
a long career. They need
something to have purpose
about and that is where
the work of Rugby League
Cares is invaluable with
grants available for training
and education to give
them those opportunities.
“We have regular check ins
with the players to make
sure they are ok mentally
as well. We have an open
door policy that people
can come and see me if
they have any issues, no
matter how big or small
they think it might be. The
players are a lot more open
these days to sharing their
own situations. We have
a safe environment here
where players can share
what they feel with each
other, and that really works
because the likelihood is
that someone else in the
group has been through the
same experience and they
help each other. I often
say to the players that
there are 365 days in the
year and they can’t all be
good so what are we going
to when it’s not so good.
We need to keep talking
and tackle those issues.”
SUPER LEAGUE
It’s only live once

Bringing people
together
generation
after
generation
Around 150 years ago, a group of people joined
forces to help people save and borrow to buy a home
for their family. And a few years earlier, just a few miles
away, people got together to play for a team we know
today as Leeds Rhinos.
And to this day, we’re still helping people feel part of
something – whether it’s bringing fans together to
roar on the Rhinos, or helping people to buy a home
and be part of their communities.
