Bairnsdale and District Model Aero Club
aka VMAA State Field Eastern
Mid May Muster Fun Fly - 21 May 2023
Well folks, the Mid May Muster Fun Fly, hosted by the
Bairnsdale and District Model Aero Club (BADMAC) was
on again and yours truly decided to make a trip down southeast
to experience what our State field had to offer. The
weather forecast for this weekend was looking a little
average but with friends to visit and the local hospitality, I
could not wait.
Upon arrival I was greeted by Club Secretary, Tony Wilson
and many other well-known faces. It was a great opportunity
to have a chat with the locals and former VMAA President,
Carl Bizon while waiting for the weather to clear. The
Bureau of Meteorology said that the day would fine up by
1pm and for once it was correct, so out came the flyers and
the array of fantastic models.
The club has done a tremendous job of developing the site
and presenting us all with a first-class facility, including the
magnificent grass runway with a manicured finish. Most of
the attendees managed to get up and away with multiple
sorties throughout the day until last light. I love these events
because it brings such a wide variety of models, people and
spectator enjoyment. Great to see the juniors involved and
the support offered by family members in the kitchen.
Congratulations to the organisers for another great event at
the VMAA State Field Eastern. If you’ve never been to this
event, reach out to the Club Secretary and make the effort.
You won’t be disappointed. The model aircraft airfield and
club rooms are located 11km south of the Princes Highway
on Bengworden Road, opposite Boundary Rd in Goon Nure.
Happy Landings.
Jon Goudge - VMAA Vice President.
Echuca Moama Model Aero Club
‘Come & Try Day’
Report by Fred West
The Echuca Moama Model Aero Club (EMMAC) conducted a very successful come and try day on Sunday
19 March 2023. The club decided to publish some paid advertising on Facebook and enlisted the help of
Andrew Sill from Flatout RC to assist. We set up some local advertising linked to a booking system, which
was very successful and resulted in the day being booked out in a little over a week!
After a weather issue with a late Total Fire Ban being declared for the Saturday prior to the event, we hastily
reorganised it for the following day with a majority of those who booked in still being able to attend.
The event was supported by the VMAA, which made a financial contribution towards the cost of advertising.
The free BBQ our club provided was very much appreciated. All in all, it was a successful day for the club
with our members enjoying showing off our sport.
We now have new members signed up with more potential members showing interest.
Trainees getting an introduction on the simulators.
Plenty of action in the pits.
The flightlines were busy.
How Secure are your Club Funds?
To all Secretaries.
This article is simply meant to raise awareness of the importance for clubs affiliated with the VMAA to have
procedures in place to ensure the safety of your club funds. In the past, incidents have occurred, so we
recommend that the following procedures are followed to minimise the chance of these ever happening again.
The vast majority of treasurers and club committees will be operating under the following guidelines but for
those who aren’t, the VMAA strongly recommends that your club falls in line with the rest of us.
All club bank account transactions MUST involve two signatories who have their own sign-in
secure reference number and secure password to make payments or transfer money between club
accounts. When it comes to your club’s money, never be blinded by trust and never give your password
details to anyone. Personal friendships must have no influence here. All banks should have a procedure
in place to allow for two signature holders to operate remotely of each other to complete the transaction.
Bank Statements must be made available for viewing on a regular basis to the club committee and
the members if requested. Never rely on the figures being produced on an Excel spreadsheet.
Bank Statements must be tabled at the club’s monthly or bi-monthly meetings and minuted as being
produced.
Auditing of club accounts. It is no longer a VicGov Consumer Affairs requirement to have an
external audit completed on your club’s Annual Financial Statement. This situation makes it imperative
that actual bank statements are actually viewed on a regular basis.
Bank Statements should describe the item that has been purchased by the club. e.g. Repair to
tractor or the purchase of fuel.
This article is not meant to offend the 99.9% of treasurers out there who do a great job for their club. Please
read it as a timely reminder for clubs to re-visit their banking security arrangements.
Professional care of the club's funds makes sure that poor behaviour doesn't creep in, even accidentally.
If your committee has any questions, please forward them to secretary@vmaa.com.au
~ BACKGROUND ~
Well after missing the past three years due to Covid-19, the very popular Scratch & Kit Built Scale Rally is
back. This event is all about showing the skills and deeds of the model builder. There will be great trophies
and hopefully some giveaways during the day from our sponsors. Currently our sponsors are HOLK RC,
(holkrc.com.au) that supplies modelling accessories as well a kit cutting service, TTT Insurance for all your
insurance needs and Balsa Central for your balsawood. HOLK RC will have a shop at the Rally.
Dust off your hand-built scale models and come along for a great day. Please no ARFs. This is all about
handmade models and those that go to the trouble to build them. Size and finish is nothing to do with it. Just
come along and fly your scale model.
In the past we had several modellers bring along their unfinished projects, which have been very popular and
generate a lot of interest. So, we have decided to provide a prize for the BEST UNFINISHED PROJECT. So,
do not let not having a model ready to fly stop you from being part of a great day. Bring out your project and
let’s see what you are doing.
Please invite your friends and neighbours to come along for a great day out.
Apollo 1
On 27 January 1967, tragedy struck on the launch pad at
Cape Kennedy during a preflight test for Apollo 204
(AS-204). The mission was to be the first crewed flight of
Apollo and was scheduled to launch on 21 February 1967.
Unfortunately, Astronauts Virgil Grissom, Edward White
and Roger Chaffee lost their lives when a short circuit
caused a fire in the command module, killing the men.
Apollos 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6
There are many convoluted explanations for these planned
flights. Here’s but one, extracted from Wikipedia.
There was some incongruity in the numbering and naming of the first three uncrewed
Apollo-Saturn (AS) or Apollo flights. This was due to AS-204 being renamed Apollo 1
posthumously. This crewed flight was to have followed the first three uncrewed flights.
After the fire, which killed the AS-204 crew on the pad during a test and training
exercise, uncrewed Apollo flights resumed to test the Saturn V launch vehicle and the
Lunar Module; these were designated Apollo 4, 5 and 6. The first crewed Apollo
mission was thus Apollo 7. Simple Apollo numbers were never assigned to the first
three uncrewed flights, though renaming AS-201, AS-202, and AS-203 as Apollo 1-A,
Apollo 2 and Apollo 3, had been briefly considered. For a total overview of the Apollo
program click HERE.
Apollo 7 - launched on 11 October 1968
This mission successfully demonstrated the Command and
Service Modules with crew performance and featured the
first American live broadcast from space. The crew was
Walter ‘Wally’ Marty Schirra Jr., Ronnie Walter ‘Wally’
Cunningham and Donn Fulton Eisele.
Apollo 8 - launched on 21 December 1968
This mission was the first crewed spacecraft to
successfully orbit the Moon and return to Earth. The
Apollo 8 crew were also the first to witness and
photograph the well-known and spectacular Earthrise. The
crew was Frank Frederick Borman, William ‘Bill’ Alison
Anders and James ‘Jim’ Arthur Lovell Jr.
Article researched and compiled by the Editor.
Apollo 9 - launched on 3 March 1969
This mission was the first crewed spaceflight with the Lunar Module (LM). The crew tested various
manoeuvres with the LM in preparation for the Moon landing. The crew was James Alton McDivitt, Russell
‘Rusty’ Louis Schweickart and David Randolph Scott.
Apollo 10 - launched on 18 May 1969
This mission was the first flight of a crewed Apollo spacecraft to operate procedures around the Moon. It
included all aspects of a lunar landing, except for the landing - obviously. The crew was Thomas Patten
Stafford, Eugene Andrew Cernan and John Watts Young.
Apollo 11 - launched on 16 July 1969
On 20 July 1969 the Apollo 11 crew successfully completed the national goal set by President John F.
Kennedy eight years prior, to perform a crewed lunar landing and return safely to Earth. The crew was Neil
Alden Armstrong (1st on the Moon), Edwin ‘Buzz’ Eugene Aldrin Jr. (2nd on the Moon) and Michael (no
middle name) Collins.
Apollo 12 - launched on 14 November 1969
The second Apollo Moon landing crew built on the work of the first. In addition to continuing Apollo's lunar
exploration tasks, the crew deployed experiments and recovered portions of a lander that had been on the
Moon for two years. The crew was Charles Peter ‘Pete’ Conrad Jr. (3rd on the Moon), Alan LaVern Bean
(4th on the Moon) and Richard F rancis Gordon Jr. (The Apollo Missions continue on the next page.)
Apollo 13 - launched on 11 April 1970
This mission was to be the third lunar landing attempt but it was aborted after a rupture of the service
module’s oxygen tank. The crew was rescued, resulting in a ‘successful failure’. The crew was James ‘Jim’
Arthur Lovell Jr., Fred Wallace Haise Jr. and John Leonard Swigert Jr.
Apollo 14 - launched on 31 January 1971
This mission was the eighth crewed Apollo mission and the third to land on the Moon. During the two
Moonwalks, the crew ran science experiments and collected 94 pounds (41kg) of rock and soil. The crew was
Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. (5th on the Moon), Edgar Dean Mitchell (6th on the Moon) and Stuart Allen Roosa.
Apollo 15 - launched on 26 July 1971
This mission was the first of the Apollo missions capable of a longer stay-time on the Moon and greater
surface mobility. The crew was the first to use the Lunar Roving Vehicle. The crew was David Randolph
Scott (7th on the Moon), James Benson Irwin (8th on the Moon) and Alfred Merrill Worden.
Apollo 16 - launched on 16 April 1972
During this mission, the crew drove more than 16 miles (about 25km) over three Moonwalks on the Lunar
Roving Vehicle and collected 209 pounds (about 95kg) of samples. The crew was John Watts Young (9th on
the Moon), Charles ‘Charlie’ Moss Duke Jr. (10th on the Moon) and Thomas Kenneth ‘Ken’ Mattingly II.
Apollo 17 - launched on 7 December 1972
This was the last mission in which humans travelled to the Moon. It was distinguished by extended hardware
capability, a larger scientific payload capacity and further use of the battery-powered Lunar Roving Vehicle.
The crew was Eugene Andrew Cernan (11th on the Moon), Harrison Hagan Schmitt (12th on the Moon) and
Ronald Ellwin Evans.
Trivia:
Cernan ventured to the Moon twice. He orbited in Apollo 10
and walked on the Moon in Apollo 17.
Shepard became the second person and the first American to
travel into space and in 1971 he became the fifth and oldest
person to walk on the Moon at the age of 47.
Lovell orbited the Moon in Apollo 8 and flew in the stricken
Apollo 13.
Young orbited the moon in Apollo 10 and walked on the Moon
in Apollo 16.
Scott flew in Apollo 9 and walked on the Moon in Apollo 15.
All up 25 Apollo astronauts in nine missions flew to the Moon,
bearing in mind that Cernan and Young went twice.
Twelve men walked on the Moon, bearing in mind that Cernan
and Young only landed on the Moon once.
Apart from the Apollo 1 disaster, there were several other near
disasters that could have threatened the entire Apollo program
at several points along the way. These will be revealed in a
future edition.
Ways to Read Your VMAA Bulletin
It has been brought to my attention that some members have had difficulty navigating our online bulletin. The
main issue was that the text was too small and blurred, making it difficult to read. This prompted me to look
deeper into the navigation options and in doing so I solved the initial concern. I also discovered the many
hidden options available to navigate the pages. So I will guide you through the two options on the Yumpu
website. A third option is to view the bulletin on the VMAA website. Once there, in the menu at the top, look
up VMAA NEWS and read a smaller MB version from there.
OPTION 1: DOWNLOAD ePAPER
Using your mouse, when you left click on the link from the
email you received from the VMAA Secretary, you will be
directed to the VMAA Bulletin page on the Yumpu website.
Once on the page, left click on the DOWNLOAD ePAPER
button, after which you should see a file in PDF format in Option 2
Option 1
the top right-hand corner of your computer screen being
downloaded into your computer’s DOWNLOADS folder.
Once it has downloaded, the bulletin should automatically
open. That’s it, nothing more to do but enjoy your read.
Should you want to adjust the PDF page, use the + or - signs
at the top of the page. I would strongly recommend reading
the bulletin this way. It is quick and safe and you’ll be able
to refer to any edition stored in your computer.
OPTION 2: ePAPER READ Article composed by the Editor.
There are multiple ways to navigate your way around the ePAPER READ. It is this option that is troublesome
to some readers, so I will guide you through it and explain the various ways to navigate the pages. This time
left click with your mouse on the ePAPER READ button. The front page of the bulletin will open up. Left
click anywhere on the page to reveal a menu at the bottom of the page, as shown in the diagram below. The
menu will stay visible while your cursor remains on the menu. If you move your cursor off the menu, the
menu will disappear in two seconds. Next, left click on the settings icon; a box will appear showing five ways
to turn the pages. The Horizontal Scroll is usually the default read; you can experiment with the other ways. If
you want to enlarge the pages, left click anywhere on the page to bring up the menu again. Now left click on
the black dot of the zoom scroll bar and scroll a small amount to the right. You will need to do this procedure
for every page. I found with my computer, when I enlarged the pages using the Vertical Scroll, some of the
page formatting went awry - but this could be just my computer. Anyway, you now have the option to decide
your reading preference. As with most navigation options, there is usually more than one way to perform a
particular move; scrolling through the pages is no different. You can left click to turn the pages indicated with
an arrow on the middle left side or the middle right side of the page or
else use the wheel on your mouse. Hope this has been helpful. Enjoy.
This download box will appear when you click on Option 1
Left click with your mouse anywhere in the
blue area to reveal the menu at the bottom.
If you move the mouse away from the menu
it will disappear in two seconds.
