Who else cannot wait for the Summer to be over? The first week of
August broke all kinds of record highs, and honestly, I’m ready for my
kids to return to their school routine, even if it means handling various
carpool schedules. With that in mind, this issue of VIVA NOLA brings
some tips for parents to get their children ready for school, as well as
some tips for students who will be attending new schools due to the
changes to the Jefferson Parish Schools.
We also honor Friar Sergio Serrano in this issue as a token of our
gratitude for his dedication to the Hispanic community of New Orleans
and wish him well in his new endeavors. We will surely miss him!
On the cover, we feature young talent who’s got the support from
fellow New Orleanian artist Lil Wayne; a dream come true for Allan
Cubas, who is working to make it big in music. Read about Cubas and
much more in this edition of VIVA NOLA. Celebrate Latino culture

It’s back to school time, so we have some tips for parents to help
prepare their children and physically and build an efficient routine:
1. Prepare in advance:
Purchase school supplies,
uniforms, and other
necessities to avoid lastminute
stress. Organize your
home and create a quiet
space for children to do their
homework and study, free
from distractions.
2. Establish a routine: Set
a consistent schedule for
waking up, getting ready,
and going to bed to help
children adjust to the school

consistent bedtimes and
limiting screen time before
bed.
3. Plan healthy meals:
Create a meal plan with
nutritious breakfast, lunch,
and snack options to

academic and personal
goals with your children and
help them develop a plan to
achieve them.
5. Foster organization:
Teach children the
importance of organizing
their backpacks, study
materials, and assignments
to minimize stress and
maximize productivity.
6. Promote physical activity
and social connections:
Encourage children to
engage in regular physical
activity or join after-school
sports to stay active, relieve
stress, and socialize with
peers.
7. Get involved: Attend
parent-teacher meetings,
join the school’s parent
association, or volunteer
for school events to stay
connected with your child’s
education.
8. Teach time management
skills: Help children
learn how to prioritize
tasks, manage their
time effectively, and
balance schoolwork with
extracurricular activities.
9. Limit screen time: Set
reasonable limits to prevent
screen time from interfering
with homework, social
interactions, and overall
well-being.
10. Promote self-care: Teach
children the importance
of self-care activities such
as mindfulness, relaxation
techniques, and hobbies to
manage stress and maintain
overall well-being.
Remember to speak with your children. If you notice they are
anxious about returning to school, listen attentively, validate their
concerns, and provide reassurance and support. Find ways to
encourage open communication. Children need to know their parents
are there to provide a safe space to express their feelings, concerns,
and excitement about returning to school and other life events.

Es el regreso a clases y traemos consejos para que los
padres puedan ayudar a sus hijos a prepararse mental y
físicamente y construir una rutina eficiente:

Preparing for a Successful
Transition: Tips for Students
Moving to a New School

The 2022-2023 school year ended
with the announcement of school
closures in Jefferson Parish. A new
Infrastructure and Efficiency plan aimed
at consolidating several schools in the
parish was the reason for the changes
in school attendance zones affecting
approximately 6,100 students. This
article seeks to guide students affected
by this drastic change.
Thousands of students in Jefferson
Parish have been adversely affected
by the school consolidations. With such
a radical change, some children and
youth may be experiencing various
emotions, including anxiety, stress,
anger, and perhaps fear. Starting at
a new school entails nervousness
about building new social connections,
managing change-related anxiety,
understanding the new academic
environment, and the stress of making
the most of the available resources to
ensure a smooth transition.
Among the normal feelings students
may experience, the displacement of
those separated from their previous
schools can be extra challenging.
They had to leave friendships behind
abruptly and already established
connections with teachers and staff. For
this reason, students must approach
the academic year with a positive
mindset. Cristina Garcia, a high school
teacher from an affected school, says
change is never easy. “It is important
to think about the positive aspects that
can arise from this experience,” she
said, adding that entering a new school
with a positive mindset is a great
opportunity for the academic year to be
successful. “It’s a chance to start anew
and do better than the previous year.”
To help students cope with the
challenges of moving to a new school,
establish new social connections,
manage change-related anxieties,
and understand the new academic
environment, Garcia shares some
advice:
1. Speak with your guidance counselor
on the first day of classes. Building clear
communication with them will help reduce any
misunderstandings in the future.
2. Join clubs or sports: If you don’t like a club or
sport, talk to your principal about creating one.
3. Attend any back-to-school events. It will
facilitate meeting teachers and allow you to
explore the campus and find your classrooms.
4. Find a hobby you enjoy to reduce stress
and anxiety: Journaling, exercising, meditating,
spending time with friends, or listening
to music. Make sure to reserve time for
yourself. This change can be stimulating and
overwhelming, so finding something that helps
you relax will benefit you in the long run.
5. Establish a routine. It will help provide a
sense of control and organization and reduce
anxiety.
Unfortunately, thousands of students
will be in the same situation. However,
young people can seek peer support
and embrace new beginnings. The
final advice from Ms. Garcia: “Always
keep an open mind. This experience
may be difficult for some, but it can be
beneficial and open doors to various
opportunities.”

Consejos para estudiantes en
nuevas escuelas
El año escolar 2022-2023 terminó con el anuncio de
clausuras de colegios en la parroquia de Jefferson debido
al nuevo plan de Infraestructura y Eficiencia para consolidar
varias escuelas. Los cambios de zona basados en los nuevos
mapas afectaron aproximadamente a 6.100 estudiantes. Este
artículo busca brindar orientación a los estudiantes afectados
por el cambio drástico que están pasando por la transición a
una nueva escuela.
Para algunos niños y jóvenes, puede ser difícil el cambio
y experimentar emociones como ansiedad, estrés, coraje
y miedo es normal. Ingresar a una nueva escuela o colegio
causa un poco de nerviosismo, puesto que se deben realizar
procesos como construir nuevas conexiones sociales,
comprender el nuevo entorno académico y conocer los
recursos disponibles para lograr una transición fluida.
De todo lo que el estudiante pueda sentir normalmente al
ingresar a un ambiente escolar nuevo, el desplazamiento, es
decir niños y jóvenes que han sido separados de sus colegios
anteriores dejando amistades y profesores, relaciones que
ya habían construido por varios años, es para algunos, una
situación difícil de sobrellevar. Por esta razón es muy importante
que los estudiantes inicien el año lectivo con positivismo
y que busquen los aspectos positivos que pueden surgir
de la experiencia de cambio, dice Cristina Garcia, maestra
de secundaria de uno de los colegios afectados. “Es una
oportunidad para comenzar de nuevo y hacerlo mejor que el
año anterior”, dijo.
Garcia comparte los siguientes consejos para que la
transición sea más sencilla para niños y jóvenes:
• Habla con tu consejero el primer día de clases, si es
posible. Construir una forma clara de comunicación con
ellos ayudará a reducir cualquier malentendido en el
futuro.
• Encuentra un pasatiempo que disfrutes para reducir
el estrés y la ansiedad. Esto puede ser llevar un diario,
hacer ejercicio, meditar, pasar tiempo con amigos o
incluso escuchar música. Asegúrate de reservar tiempo
para tí. Este cambio puede ser estimulante y abrumador,
por lo que encontrar algo que te ayude a relajarte te
beneficiará a largo plazo.
• Crea una rutina. Esto te ayudará a tener un sentido de
control, organización y reducir la ansiedad.
En conclusión, hay que recordar que son miles de
estudiantes que estarán en la misma situación. Los jóvenes
pueden buscar apoyo entre sus compañeros y aprovechar al
máximo la oportunidad de comenzar y aceptar estas nuevas
experiencias. La profesora García recuerda a los estudiantes:
“mantén siempre la mente abierta. Aunque esta experiencia o
cambio pueda ser difícil para algunos, al final del día puede ser
beneficioso y abrir puertas a diversas oportunidades”.
• Únete a clubes o deportes: Si no tienen un club o
deporte que te guste, habla con tu director para crear
uno.
• Asiste a cualquier evento de regreso a clases. Esto
facilitará conocer a los profesores y tendrás la
oportunidad de explorar la sede y encontrar dónde se
encuentran tus clases.

Month Celebration

As most know, the United
States celebrates Hispanic
Heritage Month from
September 15 to October 15.
This commemoration serves
as a platform to highlight the
contributions of immigrants
and Latino citizens in the
country and celebrate Latino
culture on a grand scale.
The historical New Orleans
institution, the French Market
District, takes part in this
celebration by highlighting
the Latino artists and vendors
at the market, and it also
organizes a great festival that
provides entertainment to
the entire community and, in
turn, offers visibility to Latino
cultural acts, musical bands,
restaurants, and non-profit
organizations.
Although the organization
has held several events that
showcase Latin performances
and food, it officially
established the Hispanic
Heritage Month Celebration in
2022. On its second edition,
the festival will take place
on September 16, starting
at 11 a.m. at the flea market
section of the French Market.
This celebration includes live
performances by various local
bands every hour until 4 pm.
The Hispanic Heritage
Month Celebration is a free
festival for the whole family
with activities for children,
live music, delicious Latin
food and drinks for sale, and
the opportunity to find out
about the programs of various
organizations that support the
Latino community in the city.
The French Market District
administration and organizers
have done a great job putting
together events that genuinely
embrace the diversity of the
New Orleans community
and provide a space for an
authentic representation of
those participating in the
festivals. Last year, bands
like Arpa with the Garifuna
Connection, Papo y Son
Mandao, Merengue 4, and
Julio & Cesar, among others,
showcased various Latin
music genres. At the same
time, restaurants like El Gato
Negro, La Milpa, and La
Chilanga offered their alreadyrecognized
dishes from
Mexico and Central America,
while up-and-coming vendors
like Numada and Punto
Criollo had the opportunity
to showcase their delicious
meals.
We invite you to enjoy
this annual Latin celebration
in the heart of the French
Quarter. Join the party, taste
the delicious flavors of various
restaurants in the city, dance
to the contagious Latin
rhythms, and browse through
the French Market o discover
the artists and vendors that

After leading the Hispanic
Apostolate ministry for over ten
years, Friar Sergio Serrano, O.P.,
leaves Louisiana to carry out a new mission
in Orlando, Florida.
On July 4, Serrano took advantage of
the move to enjoy one of his passions:
traveling on his motorcycle. “I’ll be doing
1,100 miles. I chose that date because I love
the United States, and I arrived here in the
United States on a Marian feast on July 16.”
Since he was a child, he wanted to be a
priest. Still, his path was not a straight line.“I
wanted to learn about music, the military,
motorcycles, girls, everything. So I learned
music, did other services, and entered
religious life. It didn’t go very well, left, and
then I came back”, he said. But his taste
for challenges, scuba diving, motorcycle
racing, and extreme sports, including
skydiving, motorcycle racing, and traveling,
remain.
The journey to Florida will be one of
the first trips he will make in his new job
as a fundraiser for an organization of
bishops.”The order has requested that the
Dominicans work a little more for the poor.
Every weekend, I will travel to a different
church nationwide, talking about this
agency to get people to donate.”
Since his ordination on June 9, 2007,
Serrano has had multiple assignments
in various locations. In all, his mission
has been to rebuild.“ The reconstruction
process is encouraging because it helps

me understand that I am in that plan of
redemption where a God rebuilds a fallen
humankind, revives it all the time, and
makes it better. So when they send me to
a place with the challenge to rebuild, I am
very happy; I love it”.
In 2006 he came to New Orleans to
rebuild the faith and churches destroyed or
scattered by Hurricane Katrina. “Everyone
was displaced, and the provincial told me
that he saw in me the ability to rebuild,
to build a community.” He worked in
St. Dominic for three and a half years.
He then traveled to Ecuador, where he
raised more than 1 million dollars for the
poorest church in the city, a monument that
needed restoration. He went to Miami for
six months and returned to New Orleans
to rebuild the Blessed Seelos Parish,
where he spent a year cleaning, fixing,
and building. When it was ready, he was
assigned to Memphis, Tennessee, but the
archbishop requested him to stay in New
Orleans. He remained the director of the
Center of Jesus the Lord, which would
relocate, and at the same time, worked in
the Hispanic Apostolate to see if he could
recover it.
“I said I am not going anywhere to close.
I’ve gone everywhere to open and rebuild.”
Since May 13, 2013, he has been working in
the Hispanic Apostolate.” Another Marian
feast,” he emphasizes.
He recovered and strengthened the
Hispanic Apostolate. They restructured and
expanded its various programs, provided
support after multiple hurricanes, gave
visibility to the community’s economic
needs, and made alliances with numerous
entities. Serrano was integral in educational
and communication efforts during a global
pandemic, a desperate time, especially
for immigrants with language barriers and
away from loved ones. Apart from these
initiatives, he also arranged for the arrival
of eight priests and seminarians to serve a
community short of Hispanic priests. The
volunteer base he leaves counts with over
300 members ready to help.
New Orleans has given Serrano many
life lessons that have helped him grow.
“I feel extremely blessed because I have
great friends in New Orleans; I have people
I can call my family today.”
He will take from this city all the love
and support that they have given him. He
confesses he will miss the oysters he loves,
along with gumbo, jambalaya, and lobsters.
“I’ll take a little water from the Mississippi;
as they say, whoever drinks water from the
Mississippi will return.”
As for what he leaves behind, his
legacy has been showing that Hispanics
can improve this country. “We have a lot
of talent and potential because we are
resourceful, have lived with little, and
know how to make a lot from a little bit. So
coming to this country and multiplying what
it offers and taking our talents to make it
better. And most importantly, knowing that
none of this is possible if we do not have
God in our hearts.”

Luego de liderar por más de 10 años el
ministerio del Aposotalado Hispano, el
fraile Sergio Serrano, O.P., deja Luisiana
para llevar a cabo una nueva misión
desde Orlando, Florida.
El 4 de julio, Serrano aprovechó la
mudanza para disfrutar de una de sus
pasiones: viajar en su motocicleta. “Estaré
recorriendo 1.100 millas. Escogí esa fecha
para irme porque amo a los Estados
Unidos y yo llegué aquí a los Estados
Unidos en otra fiesta Mariana, un 16 de
julio.”
Desde niño quiso ser sacerdote, pero
su camino no fue en línea recta. “Yo
quería conocer la música, la milicia, las
motocicletas, las niñas, todo. Entonces
aprendí música, hice otros servicios y
después entré a la vida religiosa. No me
fue muy bien, me salí, y después volví”,
comentó. Pero su gusto por los retos, el
buceo, las carreras en moto, los deportes
extremos, incluido el paracaidismo,
carreras en moto, y por viajar, siguen
vigentes.
La travesía hacia la Florida será uno de
los primeros viajes que estará realizando
en su nuevo reto como recaudador
de fondos para una organización de
obispos.“La orden, ha pedido que los

En 2006 llegó a Nueva Orleans a
reconstruir la fé y las iglesias que habían
sido destruidas o dispersadas por el
huracán Katrina. “Estaba todo el mundo
desplazado y el provincial me dijo que
veía madera en mí para venir a reconstruir,
para venir a hacer comunidad”. Fue
asignado a St. Dominic por 3 años y
medio, luego viajó a Ecuador donde
recaudó más de 1 millón de dólares para
la iglesia más pobre de una ciudad, un
monumento que debía ser restaurado.
Una vez arreglada la iglesia fue asignado
a Miami por seis meses y regresó a Nueva
Orleans para reconstruir la parroquia de
Blessed Silos donde por un año estuvo
limpiando, arreglando, y construyendo.
Cuando estaba lista lo asignaron a
Memphis, Tennessee, pero el arzobispo
pidió que lo dejaran en Nueva Orleans. Se

trabajando en la Pastoral Hispana. “Me
cae todo en fiesta Mariana”, enfatiza.
Recuperó y fortaleció el Apostolado
Hispano. Reestructuraron y expandieron
los diferentes programas del Apostolado,
brindó soporte después de múltiples
huracanes, dió visibilidad a las
necesidades económicas de la comunidad
y realizó alianzas con diversas entidades.
Fue integral en esfuerzos educativos y
comunicacionales durante una pandemia
mundial, un tiempo confuso especialmente
para inmigrantes con barreras de idioma
y lejos de sus seres queridos. Aparte
de estas iniciativas, también gestionó la
llegada de ocho sacerdotes y seminaristas
para servir a una comunidad que aún
sigue corta de sacerdotes hispanos. En el
Apostolado deja más de 300 voluntarios
listos para ayudar.
Nueva Orleans le ha dado muchas
lecciones de vida que le han ayudado
a crecer como persona. “Me siento
extremadamente bendecido porque tengo
grandes amigos en Nueva Orleans, tengo
gente que hoy en día puedo decir que es
mi familia”.
Confiesa que se lleva de esta ciudad
todo el cariño y apoyo que le han dado
y también que va a extrañar las ostras,
que le encantan, junto al gumbo y el
jambalaya, y las langostas. “Me llevo un
poquito de agua del Mississippi y dicen
que el que toma agua del Mississippi,
vuelve.”
En cuanto a lo que deja, su legado ha sido
demostrar que como hispanos podemos
mejorar el país. “Nosotros tenemos mucho
talento y mucho potencial porque somos
recursivos, hemos vivido con poco y
sabemos hacer lo poco mucho. Entonces
venir a este país y lo poco que nos ofrece
multiplicarlo y sacar los talentos y hacerlo
mejor… Y lo más importante, saber que
nada de esto es posible si no tenemos a
Dios aquí en el corazón”

Appraisals vs. Home Inspections

Prospective buyers often need
clarification about the difference
between a home inspection and
an appraisal. Appraisals help you
understand a home’s value, while
inspections will help you understand
its physical condition and integrity.
Knowing the difference between both
terms might help during the closing
process.
A home appraisal is performed by
a licensed appraiser who estimates
a home’s fair market value. It’s
common for mortgage lenders to
require an appraisal before approving
you for a loan. They seek assurance
that the loan amount doesn’t surpass
the property’s value, allowing them to
recoup their investment in case of a
buyer’s loan default.
To determine the value of a home,
an appraiser factors in the home’s
location, its condition, and the value
of similar houses recently sold in
the area. These are also known as
comparables or comps.
Once a buyer has made an offer,
they can hire a home inspector, a
professional licensed or certified by
the state, to thoroughly investigate
the property’s condition and reveal
any issues requiring repairs.
During the inspection process,
a home inspector will examine
the structure, roof, attic, plumbing,
electrical system, and anything else
that can affect its value. Even though
the buyer doesn’t need to be present
during the home inspection, we
highly recommend it. The inspector
can walk through the home and
explain the severity of any issues
they discover. However, an appraiser
won’t tell you their findings until they
complete their report, which will go
directly to the lender, but the buyer
can request a copy of that report.
A home inspection is a tool
that can protect the buyer, and
the results allow a buyer the
opportunity to request a price
decrease/credit on the purchase;
ask the owner to make repairs to fix
any issues, or decide if they want to
walk away and find another home
to purchase.
In a real estate transaction, home
appraisals and inspections benefit
the homebuyer, home seller, and
mortgage lender to guarantee the
value and safety of the home.

Existe cierta confusión entre las
personas que van comprar una
vivienda cuando se menciona la
necesidad de realizar una inspección
y una valuación (o avalúo), puesto que
no saben cual es la diferencia. Las
valuaciones, ayudan a comprender el
valor de una casa, mientras que las
inspecciones ayudarán a examinar
el estado físico e integridad de la
propiedad. Entender la diferencia
entre ambos términos puede ayudar

Being part of the Young Money label, “It’s a dream
come true” for Allan Cubas, a New Orleans-born
Honduran artist whose recognition is growing in the
urban music community.
Cubas recognizes the importance of showing up
and the fortune of being in the right place at the right
time. The way things happen in New Orleans, a friend
of a friend told him he could be a good fit for Lil Wayne
and Mack Maine’s music label Young Money, which has
looking to sign new talent. “Petie called me randomly
one night and told me, I feel like you could be a good
addition, with the way the Spanish game is growing.”
Those in the music scene have known about Cubas’
dedication and passion for his music and recognize his
talent as an American bicultural artist in New Orleans.
Cubas’ father is from Honduras, and his mother is a
Mississippi native. He grew up in a genuinely bicultural
family, which gives him the upper hand in navigating
between two languages and the experiences and
culture of the Latino and the Anglo worlds. Cubas
represents the 504, which happens to be the New
Orleans area code and Honduras’s international code.
“I was a music fan for as long as I can remember. I
felt like it was an outlet for me to express myself. When

I was in Honduras, I would hear different things, but
really what hit me was coming to New Orleans at an
early age.”
His first musical influence was his father, an avid
musician who played and sang a mix of genres of
music in Spanish and at church and parties. According
to Cubas, his father would have never seen a future
in music. “He didn’t pursue it as a dream or career.
Coming from a third-world country, I don’t think he saw
that as a possibility.”
But Cubas does. He inherited music from his father
and the desire to write everything down. His mother
taught him to dream big and believe nothing was
impossible. He grew up listening to the lyrics from
artists such as Roberto Carlos and others his dad used
to sing. The New Orleans hip-hop and R&B scenes later
influenced him. “I remember going out at the block
party and hanging out in bars. Music was always hot”.
The reggaeton phenomenon influenced Cubas and
intrigued urban artists and producers in the United
States, including Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., who
understood the potential of investing in Latin music.
Finding out a New Orleans-based urban artist such as
Cubas was a match for his label. Cubas’ dedication,
work ethic, and focus have gained Lil Wayne’s full
support. Meeting Lil Wayne was surreal for Cubas.
“When I met Wayne, it was kind of a mutual chemistry
from the jump. I’m from New Orleans, Louisiana, so Lil
Wayne’s always been somebody I admired. He is the
greatest rapper of all time.”
Cubas has always loved writing lyrics. “When I got
to middle school towards high school, I started battle
rapping. You know, I always enjoyed spoken word poetry
after high school.” You won’t catch Cubas without a
pencil. He always carries it as a reminder that lyrics
and inspiration are everywhere. He recognizes his
writing is a gift, knows his strengths, and learns from
his losses. And right now, he is learning from the best.
He recently returned from touring with Lil Wayne for
over two months, where he got a prime opportunity to
perform next to his idol in front of big crowds. “Merit
got me here, but there are still levels to go,” says Cubas
knowing he will prove he can stand on his own.
Before Young Money signed him, he had performed
in various places around New Orleans, the United
States, Honduras, and Belize. He created original songs
and videos with local producers and friends like Abby
Urbina, Eric Bardales, Saul Ramos, and Mario Mejia.

He has gotten the support of a few local
promoters, such as Tito Miranda and the
late Tulio Murillo, but he’d like to see more
support from local Latinos.
“My music has taken me everywhere
because, as a dreamer, I’ve always been
chasing this, and I’m going to keep going
with it,” Cubas says, and we believe he is
certainly going places.

Después fue la escena de hip-hop y R & B de Nueva
Orleans la que lo intrigó. “Recuerdo salir a las fiestas
de la cuadra, una imagen que siempre se destaca, y
simplemente saliendo aquí en los bares. La música
siempre estaba caliente”.

France Beyond Wine
While I’m usually dabbling
in the world of wine, I
can’t help but have spirits in my
mind as Tales of the Cocktail
-a festival that focuses on such
industry- recently took place
in our city. So I deemed it
adequate to make a little note
on the subject.
A few months ago, I had
the chance and fortune of
spending some time with
Antoine Robert, the Export
Manager for Distilleries et
Domaines (DeD) de Provence,
a French distillery in a region
most known -to our market
anyway- for its wine.
Although I’ve tried to avoid
learning too much about
distilled spirits (the last thing I
need is another boozy topic
to obsess about), I can’t deny
it’s a fascinating world. Just a
few days with Antoine were
enlightening.
DeD de Provence is a
family-owned and run business
that has expanded quickly
and now exports its products
to almost eighty countries.
While Antoine previously had
different jobs, he always knew
working in the family business
was his inevitable fate, a fate
surrounded by passion.
With various countries to
oversee, Antoine points out
the positive side of working in
the family business. “Working
in the spirits industry is already

very exciting, but it adds extra
soul to the family business.
Our distillery, products, region,
and know-how… are a big part
of my family”. Antoine thinks
offering products that reflect
this passion is the best way
to remain authentic. Though
working in the family business
encourages self-improvement
and growth, he also admits it
sometimes may be challenging
not to let work-related issues
affect his personal life.
I knew the next question was
tricky, but I couldn’t help asking
what his favorite spirits were.
“Two of our spirits are clearly
my favorite: Rinquinquin (a
peach fortified wine, made from
the maceration of peaches and
peach leaves in white wine)
and Farigoule (thyme liqueur
made from the maceration
and distillation of wild thyme).”
His choice of cocktails was
clear: The Mediterranean
(Rinquinquin, Pastis Henri
Bardouin, Lemon juice, almond
syrup) and The Provençal Sour
(Farigoule, Gin XII, Lime juice,
Simple syrup, soda water).
If you are a cocktail
enthusiast, you might have
noticed the last few years
have brought innovation
with unique spirits, all-natural
ingredients, and unimaginable
combinations. One of the
newest tendencies is lowalcohol
cocktails. Antoine
agrees this worldwide trend
“allows you to taste the
ingredients used without an
overpowering taste of alcohol.”
He then reminds me low
alcohol cocktails are a fantastic
start to a wine-lead meal. Now
we are talking, Antoine!
I asked how we could
increase awareness of French
spirits -rather than only wine- in
the North American market. “By
writing articles about it like you
do right now. French producers
also have to adapt more to the
consumption outside of France
and especially to the cocktail
industry, which is big in North
America but not yet in France,
outside of the big cities”.
Besides his native language
French, Antoine is fluent in
English and Spanish. The
latter has come in handy
when visiting most Latin
American countries for work
and vacation. He loves this
part of the world and points
out that Latin America invented
or inspired many famous
cocktails. “It’s an excellent area
for “spirit lovers’ like me,” he
says, adding that he can taste
Rum, Cachaça, and Pisco,
amongst others.
Antoine is working on an
innovative coffee product “in
a category where it doesn’t
exist yet” that he isn’t ready to
reveal, so we must be on the
lookout!

desempeño en el mundo
del vino, no puedo evitar pensar
en las bebidas espirituosas en

Hace un par de meses tuve la
oportunidad y fortuna de pasar
tiempo en el mercado local con
Antoine Robert, el Gerente de

mercado- por sus vinos.
Aunque he tratado de evitar

personal, en ocasiones también es un desafío
tratar que los asuntos laborales no afecten su
vida personal.
Quise preguntarle sobre sus bebidas favoritas.
“Dos de nuestras bebidas son claramente mis
favoritas: el Rinquinquin (un vino de melocotón
fortificado, hecho a través de la maceración de la
fruta y hojas del melocotón en vino blanco) y el
Farigoule (licor de tomillo elaborado a través de
la maceración y destilación de tomillo silvestre)”.
Antoine también sabe claramente cuáles son
sus cócteles predilectos: el Mediterráneo
(Rinquinquin, pastis Henri Bardouin, jugo de
limón, sirope de almendras), y el Provençal Sour
(Farigoule, Gin XII, jugo de limón, jarabe de
azúcar, agua de soda).
Si eres entusiasta de los cócteles, puedes
haber notado que los últimos años han sido
de gran innovación con bebidas espirituosas
únicas, ingredientes completamente naturales, y
combinaciones inimaginables. Una de las nuevas
tendencias son los cócteles con niveles bajos
o moderados de alcohol. Antoine concuerda
en que esta tendencia mundial “nos permite
degustar los ingredientes utilizados sin un sabor
de alcohol abrumador”.
Luego me recuerda que
los cócteles bajos en
alcohol son un gran inicio
para las comidas donde
el vino será la principal
bebida. Ahora sí que
hablamos el mismo idioma,

Le pregunto sobre cómo
podemos incrementar la
curiosidad y consumo de

de solamente vino- en el
mercado Norteamericano.
“Escribiendo artículos
como lo haces en este momento! También, los
productores franceses deben adaptarse más al
consumo fuera de Francia y especialmente a la
industria del cóctel, que todavía no es tan grande
en Francia -se limita a las ciudades más grandescomo
lo es en Norteamérica”.
Aparte de su lengua materna el francés,
Antoine domina el inglés y el español. Este último
le ha sido útil durante sus viajes a la mayoría
de países Latinoamericanos por trabajo y a
vacacionar. Señala que muchos de los principales
cócteles fueron creados o inspirados en países
Latinoamericanos. A Antoine le encanta esta
parte del mundo, la cual considera un área
perfecta para “los amantes de los licores, como
yo” ya que puedes encontrar Ron, Cachaça y
Pisco, entre otros.
Antoine me comparte que actualmente están
trabajando en un producto innovador a base de
café “en una categoría donde todavía no existe”,
pero eso es todo lo que puede revelar por el
momento, así que, ¡tendremos que estar atentos!

Blue Beetle
The first live-action Latino
Superhero Movie

Amid a restructuring of the DC
Cinematic Universe, Blue
Beetle looks to not only lead
the charge in this rebooted franchise
but to provide the first live-action Latino
superhero movie.
Coming to theaters August 18th,
Blue Beetle follows recent college
graduate Jaime Reyes whose life is
changed forever when given a box
containing an alien technology known
as The Scarab, which puts a target
on Jaime and his extended family, as
businesswoman Victoria Kord looking
to get The Scarab back. With the help
of The Scarab, Jaime becomes Blue
Beetle using the technology to protect
his family and keep the tech out of the
wrong hands.
The film is directed by Angel Manuel
Soto, director of Charm City Kings and
Menudo: Forever Young, and stars
Cobra Kai’s Xolo Mariduena as Jaime.
Alongside Mariduena, the cast includes
George Lopez, Bruna Marquezine,
Damian Alcazar, Raoul Trujillo, and
Susan Sarandon.
The character of Jaime Reyes
debuted in 2006 as part of the
Infinite Crisis storyline and is the third
iteration of the Blue Beetle character
originally introduced in 1939. Since
his introduction, the Jaime Reyes
version of Blue Beetle has become
extremely popular with fans, joining
the superhero group Teen Titans and
getting his solo series recently titled
Blue Beetle: Graduation Day. The
character has even appeared in other

DC shows like Batman: The Brave and
the Bold and Young Justice.
Blue Beetle becomes the first liveaction
Latino superhero movie with this
upcoming movie, following a the first
Latino superhero movie Spider-Man:
Into the Spiderverse and its sequel
Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse,
animated films following the Afro-
Puerto Rican Miles Morales as he
becomes the newest Spider-Man.
It all comes at a crucial time when
more and more people ask for Latino
representation.
In superhero films, it is rare to see
Latinos outside of supporting roles or
playing non-human characters. The
Marvel Cinematic Universe has had
Michael Pena’s Luis from the Ant-
Man films and Zoe Saldana’s Gamora
from The Guardians of the Galaxy
trilogy. Before this film, DC had Sasha
Calle’s Supergirl in The Flash and
Jay Hernandez’s El Diablo in Suicide
Squad. It all has been a stepping stone
leading to this film, where a Latino
hero directed by a Latino director and
surrounded by a Latino cast can enter
the spotlight.
Due to the Writer and Actor Strikes
going on in Hollywood, Blue Beetle
won’t receive any promotion from the
cast due to strike guidelines. So, for
any fans of the upcoming movie, it will
be up to you to spread the word about
the film, see it in theaters and make it
known that films starring Latinos are
profitable if we want more movies like
it.

En medio de una reestructuración del Universo
Cinematográfico de DC, Blue Beetle (Escarabajo
Azul) busca no solo liderar con fuerza la franquicia, sino

latinos de acción en vivo.
Con su estreno en los cines el 18 de agosto, la película
Blue Beetle cuenta la historia de Jaime Reyes, un recién
graduado universitario, cuya vida cambia para siempre

tecnología alienígena conocida como Scarab. Al recibir
el poderoso paquete, Jaime y su familia extendida se

When I was 12, you asked me my favorite
color —
Black, I said, Like my soul.
You laughed,
because you were yellow
and wise like the feather pen you bought
me.
To write yellow poetry, you said,
your eyes green and proud,
and so I wrote.
I wrote about the yellow icing
glazed on those cupcakes
we made so long ago.
And the yellow cotton towel
you used to wrap me up in.
Then I took a photograph of your
yellow hair — the sun’s glare,
reflecting off it.
Until, cancer stripped it away
and left it in a yellow mess on the floor.
Then you understood why the cupcakes
turned to metal in your mouth and
why I plucked the feathers from my pen
Yellow
as you lay paralyzed, unable to stop me
— feathers around us, floating too damn
softly. ​
And when I stood naked,
a towel less child
without —
a mother’s womb
you could no longer speak —
your yellow words stolen, floating
through and through
the cold hospital room.
Pretend we’re in Paris, I whispered
