Commission
releases
findings on
Marylands
sex abuse
“HELL ON earth’.
That is what survivors of
Marylands School told the Royal
Commission of Inquiry into
sexual abuse at the Halswell-based
institution.
Yesterday, the commission
released its interim report, making
48 findings which included:
• Marylands School did not
provide adequate education and
safeguarding of the children sent
there.
• The students were abused,
neglected and deprived of their
human rights
• The Catholic Church, the
Order and the State have not yet
been found accountable for the
magnitude of the tragedy that
unfolded at Marylands School and
Hebron Trust for failing to address
the tragedy
• The (Catholic order) brothers
who inflicted abuse towards the
children sought to actively evade
accountability.
Archbishop Paul Martin said
the Catholic Church “must
continue to confront the difficult
truths of the past, including the
inexcusable abuse and suffering
described in the case study
report”.
THE FAMILY of missing real
estate agent Yanfei Bao have
issued a “heartfelt” thank you
to the public, with her husband
urging people to “go home
tonight and tell all those you
hold dear that you love and
cherish them”.
It comes as police resumed
their search of the Halswell River
Lake Te Waihora/Ellesmere
yesterday, two weeks after her
disappearance.
A homicide probe was
launched last Wednesday after
the disturbing disappearance
of the 44-year-old, who was last
seen alive on July 19.
Yesterday, Bao’s family issued
a statement thanking family,
friends and the general public for
the “outpouring of kind words
and unwavering support following
the disappearance of their
beloved wife and mother”.
“The love and compassion displayed
by fellow New Zealanders
has been truly humbling, and the
Bao family cannot express how
grateful they are for all the generous
donations made through
‘Givealittle’.”
The family also expressed their
“sincere appreciation” to the police
for their “invaluable support
and relentless dedication” in the
search for Bao.
“The family urges anyone with
information that could assist the
police in locating Yanfei to come
forward as soon as possible.
“Their only desire is to have
her returned to them, so they can
find closure and begin the grieving
process.”
The family also encouraged
everyone to cherish their loved
ones and express their feelings
openly.
Govt offers teachers 14.5% pay rise
• By Michael Neilsen
THE GOVERNMENT has
agreed to fund a $4.4 billion
package to settle teachers’ and
principals’ agreements.
An arbitration panel recommended
secondary teachers get
a 14.5 per cent pay rise spread
over three instalments.
Education Minister Jan Tinetti
said the Government offer
would see beginner teachers
receive an annual increase of almost
$10,000, in addition up to
the $7210 lump sum payment.
If accepted by both parties
the recommended settlement is
likely to have knock-on effects
for early childhood and primary
school teachers. Under pay parity
rules, the Ministry of Education
must offer any changes to
teachers’ unified base salary
scale to primary teachers and
then in turn to kindergarten
teachers.
The increase would shift
starting pay for most new secondary
teachers from $55,948
to $64,082 by the start of 2025,
while pay rates for teachers at
the top of the scale would increase
from $90,000 to $103,085.
That appeared to be better
than the pay scale recently
agreed by primary teachers
where the equivalent points on
the pay scale would increase to
$63,187 and $100,000.
The panel said the term of
the new collective agreement
should be three years, from July
3, 2022, to July 2, 2025.
The panel also recommended
‘Heartfelt’ thanks issued
one-off payments of $5000 for
all teachers, a further $1500 for
PPTA members, and up to $710
to cover teaching practising
certificate renewal.
The decision said the Post
Primary Teachers Association
had sought a pay rise totalling
17.9 per cent backdated to the
end of the previous collective
agreement on July 1, 2022,
while the Ministry of Education
was offering 11.1 per cent
starting from July 1, 2023 to
June 30, 2025.
love and cherish them,” Bao’s
husband Paul Gooch said.
The water search was paused
on Friday because of unfavourable
conditions but police were
back searching the water yesterday.
Detective Inspector Nicola
Reeves said police had received
more than 200 pieces of information
relating to the case.
“The investigation team continues
to be interested in hearing
from members of the public that
saw Ms Bao’s vehicle on the day
she went missing, Wednesday,
July 19.”
Bao’s family is also expected
to travel to New Zealand from
China, police confirmed.
Bao was last seen about 10am
on Trevor St, Hornby, where
she was due to show a potential
buyer through a home.
The 52-year-old man charged
with kidnapping Bao appeared
in court last week.
He had only been living in
New Zealand for several months.
LAKE: Anna and Josh Pedersen’s 4ha Ladbrooks property has flooded again this winter.
‘They’re expecting us to put our
• By Daniel Alvey
WHEN ANNA and Josh
Pedersen bought their property,
lakeside views were not on the
listing.
A month of rain fell across
Canterbury from July 22-23,
forcing the couple to move out
of their Tancreds Rd, Ladbrooks,
property, just south of Halswell,
with their three young children
for the second winter in a row.
“We have been in this property
three years now – this is the second
winter we have had a moat
around our house,” Anna said.
“This year in particular is
worse. It has gone over our septic
tank, we have to move the kids
out and we can’t currently live
where we are.”
Anna said it can take up to
six weeks for their 4ha property
to drain completely. They keep
some animals on the property,
including 12 cattle, sheep, and
pigs. When the flooding hits,
the cattle and sheep have to be
moved.
Said Josh: “All our animals as
well, they are currently at the
neighbour’s place, we can’t feed
and hold them here.”
Anna said they won’t be able to
bring their cattle back for at least
a month to six weeks.
She said if a solution is not
found they may have to sell the
animals.
The couple say the water comes
from the Halswell River, which is
2.5km from their property.
Said Anna: “We have a big
drainage system behind us. The
Halswell River starts increasing
in flow and actually comes up
our drainage system.
“It comes over the banks and
floods our area. The rain stopped
on the Sunday and (the water)
kept rising until (Tuesday).”
The family blames
Environment Canterbury
which they say is not listening to
their concerns over the flooding.
Said Anna: “We have had some
dealings with ECan on these
issues and they are telling us that
our drainage system is working
correctly. But this is not okay.
“I feel like they are just
expecting us to put our heads in
the sand and go away.”
ECan rivers manager David
Aires said the drainage system is
in good condition.
“The condition of
Blacklers drain prior to this
rain period could not have been
better.
“Weed-cutting had just
been completed in the
Halswell River, improving
flood-carrying capacity and there
was a relatively low lake level at
Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere.”
Aires said it was possible
for water to flow back up the
drainage system when the river
was in high flood.
“This property, along with
others, is located in an area
called Blacklers drain/Lethams
swamp,” Aires said.
NEWS 5
heads in the sand and go away’
Aires said it is a low-lying
natural ponding basin, prone to
surface flooding in significant
rain events.
“As ground conditions have
been wet to saturated for some
time, even moderate rainfall
is likely to cause surface water
flooding.”
Aires said there was “no
immediate long-term plan” to
address flooding in the area.
When the Pedersens bought the
property in 2020, they weren’t
aware of the issues but knew the
area was a floodplain.
Said Anna: “We understand
that we live in the lower area, we
understand flooding and surface
flooding, but we are getting a
phenomenal amount of rain
and flooding and it’s not going
away.”
Anna said flooding like this
was expected once every 50
years in the area but “for the
last two out three years we have
flooded”.
Said Josh: “I think the obvious
solution is a one-way floodgate
on the Halswell River to stop the
water coming up the drainage
system,” he said.
“The Halswell River is full
but not overflowing so there is
capacity within to handle water.”
The Pedersens also found an
ECan storm water discharge
report from 2018, pointing
towards increased development
causing more water drainage
issues in low-lying areas around
the Halswell River.
Said Anna: “ECan knows
about this because we have
found a report online and
it’s saying that all the new
developments in Lincoln,
Halswell, Prebbleton are raising
their levels causing more
flooding.”
The report points to
subdivisions having an impact
on drainage systems as the water
flow increases.
But Aires said a Halswell
drainage scheme review was
completed in 2019 after the
report was written. The review
investigated drainage and
flooding in the catchment but
put no firm proposals forward
to improve it. The review also
showed protecting one area
would displace floodwaters to
other areas.
“To avoid this impact, any
flood protection proposal would
likely require a multimilliondollar
solution. The main
strategy for new development
in the catchment is to avoid
building in high-hazard areas,”
Aires said.
Aires said ECan would need
to investigate the merits of a
floodgate. He said the Halswell
drainage network remains very
sensitive to additional flow.
“New urban developments
have to put in a high degree of
attenuation for stormwater to
avoid increasing flood flows,
either as part of a consented
stormwater management plan.”
This is one of countless cases of
horrific historical abuse against
young boys at the Christchurch
school which has been referred
to by survivors during the Royal
Commission of Inquiry as “hell
on earth”.
In an interim report released
yesterday, the inquiry has made
48 findings. They include:
towards the children sought to
actively evade accountability. The
of the tragedy that unfolded at
Trust for failing to address the
tragedy.
As part of its investigation into
abuse in the care of the Catholic
Church, the commission undertook
a case study, including a
public hearing, into abuse in the
care of the Order of St John of
God.
The Hospitaller Brothers of St
John of God (Order of St John of
God) is a religious order of the
Catholic Church whose members
cared for children and young
people in Christchurch from the
early 1950s onwards.
Marylands School and the
Hebron Trust were established in
Christchurch in 1955 and 1984 by
the Order of St John of God.
Up until the late 1980s
successive governments deemed
it appropriate to place disabled
children and young people in the
facilities to be trained. Marylands
was designed for boys, as young
as six, who had disabilities
or learning and behavioural
problems to support and educate
them.
Five brothers were sent from
Australia to staff the school,
most were untrained as teachers
without specialist skills to
educate disabled children.
Within the first year of the
school’s operation, all five
brothers had been accused of
abusing the children.
The brothers routinely raped,
sexually assaulted and beat the
boys. The children were forced
to perform sexual acts on the
brothers, sometimes more than
one at a time, as well as other
boys.
One survivor was made to
have sex with a younger boy. A
brother then told the boy that
he was “like him”, an abuser,
and he would get in trouble if he
disclosed the abuse.
Sometimes the abuse would
happen behind closed doors,
other times in plain sight of
everyone as a punishment.
Abuse was so normalised, the
boys started sexually abusing
each other.
Some brothers held negative
racist attitudes toward Māori
students, often calling them
“n******”.
A boy known to have been
abused by one brother became
“easier prey” for another brother.
One boy who had an
intellectual disability was sent to
Marylands when he was 10 years
old. He spent three days in school
and then was put in the kitchen,
made to wash dishes for the next
four years.
He recalled being separated
from the other boys, unable to
play with or eat meals with them.
He was sexually assaulted while
in the swimming pool by himself
by one of the brothers.
On one occasion he was made
to gas puppies to death with a
brother. He was then instructed
to take the dead puppies to the
dump.
Another Marylands survivor
spoke about being gathered into a
room with a group of other boys
and forced to perform oral sex
on one of the brothers. When he
tried to pull away he was hit with
a baseball bat so hard his nose
bled.
He described the brothers
getting angry while they were
abusing him as he often wouldn’t
hold still but he soon “adapted’ to
the abuse.
He was taken to the hospital
morgue on one occasion and
forced to see a dead body as a
scare tactic by the brothers.
The boy told multiple teachers,
social workers and even police
when he was caught running
away but no one believed him.
Church failed to act on horrific abuse
Bernard McGrath
His teenage years were
horrible, and it wasn’t until he
went to prison that he learned
to read and write and by the
time he was 25 he was a patched
member of a gang.
“It is sad to say that the only
sense of belonging and support
I ever felt was being part of a
gang.”
Another survivor recalled a
boy being forced to strip naked
outside in front of others and
was sexually assaulted as punishment.
After the Order left Marylands
in 1984 the Bishop of Christchurch
invited brothers to establish
a youth ministry to support
at-risk people, often “street kids”,
many of whom were Māori.
Despite the allegations of his
abuse at Marylands, Brother
Bernard McGrath, one of the Order’s
most prolific serial rapists,
was appointed the sole brother
of the ministry, named Hebron
Trust.
From there his “reign of terror”
only escalated.
Boys as young as eight went to
Hebron, although it was mostly
aimed at teenagers who were
homeless, referred by social service
agencies or by the criminal
and youth justice system.
About three-quarters of survivors
turned to drugs or alcohol
as a way of coping with the abuse
they endured. Many had contemplated
or attempted suicide,
others had died this way.
One survivor began getting
in trouble with the police in his
early teens but instead of being
dealt with by the court, he was
sent to McGrath’s house to do
community work such as gardening
and chores.
He said McGrath routinely
sexually assaulted him in his
office. On one occasion when he
raped the boy, he said he “was
in with the police” and no one
would believe him if he spoke up
about the abuse.
Some boys witnessed violence
that they believe may have led to
the deaths of other boys.
Another survivor described
a brother rushing at one boy
who had trouble understanding
things. He said the brother
pushed the boy over and he
smacked his head on the concrete
and began bleeding heavily.
He was then taken to the medical
room, never to be seen again.
“The way he was just hit I
knew he wouldn’t make it. He
was helpless.”
One survivor spoke of a
brother who pushed a boy into
the pool and sank to the bottom.
Soon after a funeral was held for
the boy.
Police said they “have not
located any records of death of
children while at Marylands”
and do not “hold any information
about the circumstances of
these deaths”.
• McGrath was extradited to
Australia in 2014 to face more
than 250 charges, and is serving
33 years jail for abusing 30 boys
at Kendall Grange in New South
Wales.
SOLD: A family home on Whitnall St, Halswell, sold for $1.01 million in a
brought-forward auction.
• By Nikki Preston
A BROUGHT-forward auction delivered
a Halswell couple a “life-changing” result
after their home sold for $70,000 more
than what they had already agreed to sell
it for.
While more properties were passed in
than those that were sold at some of the
city’s auction rooms last week, most of the
brought-forward auctions not only sold,
but also netted their owners the equivalent
of some people’s annual salaries as
competition for limited stock ramps up.
The auction for a modern four-bedroom,
two-bathroom home on Whitnall St,
Halswell, opened and was announced on
the market at $940,000 before five bidders
pushed it up to $1.01 million in Harcourts
Gold’s auction room last Thursday.
There were 50 groups through the
Whitnall St property in the first week of
open homes and about six pre-auction
offers were made, which Harcourts Gold
auctioneer Mark Morrison said was almost
unheard of.
He said brought-forward auctions where
the properties sell for more than what the
owners have already agreed to sell for can
be life-changing.
“It can be hugely life-altering. I don’t
know about you, but if you thought you
were going to have $940,000 and then
10 minutes later you have got another
$70,000.”
The Whitnall St owners had already
made an offer on another house so having
an extra $70,000 made the equation much
more comfortable for them, he said.
ChristchurchNZ, the
The meeting comes after
ECan chair Peter Scott promised
which are struggling to keep
his team investigated impacts on
health around change in access
to both fast food and supermarkets.
He says the findings are
important for population health.
“We know that fast-food
vendors locate in more deprived
areas, and we know that more
deprived areas have a higher
prevalence of people living with
obesity. We are hoping we can
healthier food environments,”
he said.
in body mass index (BMI) and
waist circumference (WC), the
study found.
“A global rise in obesity since
1980 is too rapid for genetic or
biological factors to be the root
cause. While individual risk factors
such as genetic makeup explain
some differences between
individuals, it was reasonable to
suggest the rise in obesity seems
to be fuelled by the coincidental
increased supply of cheap, palatable,
energy-dense foods that are
accessible, convenient, and effectively
marketed,” Hobbs said.
The CHDS is a birth cohort
study using a group of people
born in 1977, with data collected
until they turned 40 in 2017.
“Living with obesity is known
to lessen life expectancy markedly
and what happens during
early- to mid-adulthood has
profound and long-lasting implications
for future health. We
looked at details about each person’s
change in BMI and waist
circumference from age 30 to
age 40 years. We wanted to know
how a change in people’s ‘food
environments’ – either changing
residential address, or a new
fast-food outlet or supermarket
moving closer to where people
live – would affect waistlines.”
The study found evidence that
people who lived closer to fastfood
outlets over the 10-year period
had slightly larger increases
in BMI and waistlines.
This study only measured
change in geographic access to
food outlets and did not look at
other important aspects of the
food environment, including for
example price, quality or actual
use of facilities.
“Recent United Kingdom
documentation shows around
half of the country’s local
government areas had a
policy specifically regulating
proliferation of fast-food outlets
through urban planning using
such means. I guess the key
‘takeaway’ is that public health
authorities and planners should
be giving some serious thought
to where fast-food outlets and
supermarkets can be located
to improve population health,”
Hobbs said.
Robertson opens up
– and says goodbye
VICTORY: Scott Robertson and Richie Mo’unga celebrate
after the Crusaders beat the Chiefs to win the Super Rugby
Pacific title in Hamilton.
A DEPARTING Scott Robertson
has opened up on his career
as Crusaders coach in his final
interview before taking on the
All Blacks role in November.
Robertson won seven Super
Rugby titles as coach and four as
a player. He takes over from Ian
Foster as All Blacks coach after
the Rugby World Cup. In a video
posted by the Crusaders, an
emotional Robertson looks back
on his time with the franchise
and how much it has meant to
him.
“To give back to a jersey that
has given me so much . . . it’s
special that I can walk away and
go ‘thanks for everything, I’m
a better man for it. And thank
you’,” he said in the video.
Robertson also got emotional
while reflecting on his final game
in Christchurch – the 52-15 semifinal
thrashing of the Blues. He
admitted being nervous about
the potential of ending his stint
with a semi-final defeat and went
onto the ground and revved up
the home crowd before the game.
“Probably that moment was
my last time at Orangetheory, at
the home ground . . . I just felt we
needed it. I just thought it was
going to be a special moment. A
chance to bring us all together.
It was a chance to get our people
on our feet but also a thank
you from me. To say ‘let’s enjoy
this – this is our moment. Stay
here now, we’re on’. And the
performance probably reflected
that,” he says.
“I was pretty nervous too. I
thought we needed the crowd
that night. It was the end of a
career, if you end on a semifinal
at home, at a place you’ve never
lost in a final ... I thought we’re
all in. It was a pretty special
moment.”
Last week Robertson penned a
goodbye letter to Crusaders fans.
He also thanked the players
and their families for
their support and respect –
and for keeping him
accountable.
Robertson says so much of who
he and his family are – and who
he aspires to be – is linked to red
and black.
“This week was my last at
Rugby Park and boy does it feel
strange to say that. My time as
a Crusaders head coach is over
and my focus has shifted to my
ever-supportive family and my
own development ahead of the
next big challenge,”Robertson
said in the message shared by the
Crusaders.
Panthers ‘itching’ to take on Keas;
playoffs beckon for hockey, netball
Rugby league’s Pat Smith
Memorial Trophy playoffs
start on Saturday, while
the netball and hockey
semi-finalists have been
confirmed ahead of the
final round robin matches.
Jaime Cunningham
reports
RUGBY LEAGUE
The Hornby Panthers are
“itching” to get back on the field
for Saturday’s qualifying final
against the Linwood Keas after a
one week break.
They will meet at
Hornby’s home ground,
Leslie Park, at 2.45pm in what
will be their fourth encounter
this season. Hornby emerged
victorious in the last two 42-28
and 16-8.
Hornby have already claimed
the Massetti Cup, and will be
looking to repeat their 2021 success
by winning the Pat Smith
Memorial Trophy as well.
Hornby
head coach
Jed Lawrie
said last
week’s
break
between
round robin
and playoffs
Jed Lawrie
was “not
ideal” but the
Panthers know
what they need to do to beat the
Keas again.
“Our completion rate was
really good (last time we played
Linwood) and we finished a lot
of our opportunities,” he said.
“We pride ourselves on defence
– and defending wins a game of
footy.
“We’ve just got to convert
those big moments.”
The Panthers have taken a very
different road to the playoffs this
season compared to last year
when they finished fourth but
still managed to progress to the
final. This will give the Eastern
Eagles and Halswell Hornets
belief they can do the same this
season. The Hornets host
the Eagles in the elimination
final on Saturday two weeks after
beating them 16-14.
HOCKEY
Eight teams have already
qualified for the playoffs as the
Canterbury Premier League
heads into the last round on
Saturday.
In the women’s grade, Carlton
Redcliffs and Marist face off for
the Hinemoa Cup before they
meet in the qualifying final next
weekend. Carlton lead the table
on 27 points and are yet to lose
a game, while Marist sit a point
behind them.
Harewood are expected
to cement third-place with
a win over Southern on
Saturday. Winless Southern are
in seventh, having conceded 65
goals this season and scored just
one.
Fourth-placed HSOB/Burnside
take on Hornby ahead of next
week’s elimination final against
Harewood, while Avon have a
bye.
The same four teams have
confirmed their playoff spots in
the men’s competition, but the
final standings will be decided
on Saturday.
HSOB/Burnside and Carlton
Redcliffs are in contention for
the President’s Trophy when
they take on Hornby and Marist
respectively.
Table leaders HSOB/Burnside
will be favourites to take out the
trophy with a win over the fifthplaced
Hornby.
Harewood can overtake thirdplaced
Marist with a convincing
win against Southern, while
Avon play University.
NETBALL
A strong last quarter saw UC A
hand Lincoln University A their
second loss of the year, as four
teams confirmed their place in
the semi-finals ahead of the last
round on Tuesday.
Trailing 41-44 in the third
quarter, UC A outscored Lincoln
University A 13-9 in the last
quarter to win 54-53 and shoot
into second on the table. UC
are expected to finish at the
top of the table if they pick up a
large win over Kia Toa A in the
last week of the championship
round.
While their loss saw Lincoln
University A drop to fourth with
17 points, they have qualified for
the semi-finals and can climb
to at least third with a win over
Lincoln University B.
A poor second half from
Lincoln University B against
table leaders Kereru A saw them
drop out of playoff contention
with a 62-43 loss.
For Kereru A, a win against
Technical A could see them
claim top spot heading into the
finals.
However, Technical A will be
confident after their 59-33 win
over Kereru B.
Kereru B face winless Hearts St
Peters A. After a promising first
round, the last six games have
been difficult for Saints, which
was capped off by a 42-29 loss to
Kia Toa A on Tuesday.
FOOTBALL
For Cashmere Technical,
Saturday’s clash against Selwyn
United will be an opportunity to
get back to winning ways after
a slump in form over the past
month.
Despite their 7-0 win
against Green Island on
July 1, Technical have produced
a series of disappointing results
of late.
They lost the Hurley Challenge
Shield for the first time this
year with a 3-2 loss to Coastal
Spirit and were lucky to avoid
a 1-1 draw with Nomads two
weeks ago when the game was
called off after 63 minutes due to
bad weather. Although Selwyn
are ninth on the table with 10
points, they will be confident
after beating FC Twenty 11 3-2 in
their last match on July 21.
Table leaders Christchurch
Marist Albion’s road to the title
Marist Albion has emerged
as a Metro premier
powerhouse, featuring in
the last four finals. They
claimed their second title
in three years on Sunday
with a 31-26 win over High
School Old Boys. Jaime
Cunningham reports
PHYSICAL trainings, tough
conversations and team cohesion
– that’s what Marist Albion head
coach Ian Robinson says paved
the way to another
title.
Marist cemented
their dominance
in the final
against HSOB
at Rugby Park,
Ian
Robinson
usurping Lincoln
University’s
reign over the
competition and proving they
are now the team to beat.
But Robinson had a unique
problem earlier this season –
Marist were winning games
by large margins but not
performing to the standard they
could.
“After the Old Boys round
robin game which we won 46-
28, it was frustrating as we felt
we could’ve been scoring more
points than we were,” he said.
“We were brave enough to
want to push our team further.”
ATTACK: Marist fullback Rico Syme charges at High School
Old Boys halfback Freddie Gibson.
PHOTOS: JOSH BAMBER/CRFU
This included a number of
“tough” conversations with
players, which Robinson felt the
coaching staff could do because
they knew each other so well.
Their trainings during the
season were physical, with all but
one on the field.
Robinson said the team now
has a “special” cohesion.
“We’ve had continuity in our
coaching team and looking at
the team list, probably nine or 10
players who have played in four
finals now.
“I can’t overstate how important
team cohesion is in the
game.”
On Sunday, the team’s connections
were on full display.
Although HSOB were patient
in possession, Marist’s slick
backline stood out.
Despite a few ball-handling errors,
Robinson believed the win
was down to their experienced
players stepping up in the big
moments.
But when the score was locked
at 21-21 with 20 minutes to go,
Robinson admits he had trouble
staying calm: “All you can do is
CONSISTENCY: Marist Albion won the Bascik Transport Metro
premier title for the second time in three years on Sunday.
breathe – and it’s hard.”
A try under the posts to
flanker Joe Taylor in the 64thminute
saw Marist pick up
momentum. This is the moment
Robinson says “ultimately won
us the game”.
Shun Miyake’s converted
penalty in the 79th-minute put
the title out of HSOB’s reach,
but Tom Anderson was able to
dot down in the last play of the
match to narrow Marist’s winning
margin.
HSOB captain Alex Grogan
said he was proud of his team’s
“hell of a season” after many
wrote them off.
“We’ll come back better next
year,” he said.
After going down to Sydenham
in the final last year, Marist
captain Elliot Smith said he
knew how HSOB were feeling
after the match.
“You’ve been on an awesome
run,” he told them.
“It’s been a very tight competition
– and anyone from one to
nine could’ve taken it.
“But to my boys – hell of a
shift. We really ground it out and
swung momentum to us there at
the end.”
Marist’s celebrations may
continue for the next few weeks,
but Robinson is already eyeing
next year.
“We don’t want to push it too
soon, but we want to make it five
(finals) in a row.”
premiership title
• By Jaime Cunningham
CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
will look to add to their 11 Miles
Toyota Premiership titles when
they meet Nelson College in the
final on Saturday.
Despite their dominance in
the competition, CBHS have not
won the title since 2018 when
they beat Christ’s College after
the game finished 18-18 but
CBHS had scored more tries.
CBHS and Nelson last clashed
in May, when Nelson won 14-10
in trying conditions at Straven
Rd.
CBHS progressed to the final
with a 27-17 win over St Thomas
of Canterbury College last
weekend. Loosehead prop Sam
Giltrap was first to crash over
the tryline for CBHS before St
Thomas’ crossed for an equaliser
minutes later. Two quick CBHS
tries saw the home side extend
their lead to 12-5 before Ollie
Singleton touched down for their
fourth.
St Thomas’ dominated the play
either side of halftime, and were
able to draw even with CBHS 17-
17 just minutes into the second
half.
But the remainder of the
match belonged to CBHS. Tries
to hooker Manumaua Letiu and
No 8 James Moore pushed their
lead out to 27-17, which they held
onto for the win.
In the other semi-final, a
strong second half saw Nelson
hold off a persistent St Bede’s
College side. Although they led
19-17 shortly after halftime, St
Bede’s were unable to avenge
last year’s final loss, with Nelson
scoring two more tries to secure
a 31-19 win.
Nelson have featured in four
finals in the last five years. They
last met CBHS in the final in
2019 which they won 35-31.
Nelson haven’t lost a game this
season and will be the favourites
on Saturday. The match kicks off
at the Nelson College front field
at noon.
TRADE TOOLS &
The role of cow, goat or sheep milk in
the nutrition and health of older women.
Milk provides important nutrients that help older people to maintain
muscle and bone health, and low milk intake is often associated with
poor nutrition in older adults.
We are looking for female volunteers aged 60 to 80 years to participate
in the YUMMI study, a 12-week research study investigating the health
effects of consuming different types milk – cow, goat, or sheep.
CALL IN
AND SEE US
TODAY!
We will provide you with cow, goat or sheep milk powder to drink
twice a day for 12-weeks, or you will be asked to eat your normal diet
(control group). The time commitment for the study will be about 11
hours and you will attend five clinic visits. You will receive up to $220 in
supermarket vouchers in recognition of the actual or reasonable costs
involved with participating in this study (e.g. parking and/or travel costs).
THE CANTERBURY B and
under-19 sides were named last
night.
Some players in the
Canterbury B squad may need
to step up to the senior side if
required, Canterbury NPC head
coach Marty Bourke said.
“We can’t stress highly enough
how important this group is.
“Last year, we called upon
a number of the B squad
throughout the season and they
were integral in the success we
saw last year.
“We’ve seen in recent years
how the under-
has kick-started
young careers,
with the likes of
Fletcher Newell
and Tamaiti
playing in the
their footsteps.”
The under-19 squad start their
New city council campaign ahead of
Long Term Plan asks: What Matters Most?
WHAT MATTERS Most? Our
next Long Term Plan, that’s
what!
Finding out what matters most
to Christchurch residents about
their city is the focus of a new
campaign from the city council.
The What Matters Most?
campaign will be running until
August 13, and city council
staff will be out and about in
the community, popping up
at markets and events, public
meetings and forums.
With challenging issues
and decisions on the horizon,
they’ll be finding out what the
community’s real priorities are
ahead of the city council’s Long
Term Plan 2024–2034.
“It’s the council’s responsibility
to deliver the core services that
keep Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula ticking,” says city
council chief executive Dawn
Baxendale.
“Everyone in the city has
different priorities, and this
exercise will help us see where
each of our core services rank
in the discussion, as we prepare
to allocate our resources for the
next 10 years.”
Keep an eye open online for
new digital tools that let you
share your views in a way that’s
interactive, accessible and easy
to use. For those who like a more
hands-on approach, look in your
local library or service centre for
rotating voting boxes that let you
show your support for different
priorities by placing a vote with
a token.
What Matters Most? is
taking a ‘back to basics’ handson
approach to gathering
people’s voices, combined with
innovative digital tools.
“We want to hear from as wide
a range of viewpoints as possible.
The information and feedback
people provide is so important
for us both as an organisation
and a community because it
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
will be used to inform the draft
Long Term Plan,” Baxendale
says.
The Long Term Plan sets out
what the city council will build,
maintain and service as a city
over the next 10 years, and how
we will pay for it.
“Our staff will be out and
about in the community. We
have an increasingly diverse
community here in Christchurch
– it’s becoming the city of choice
for many, so we’re looking to
engage in innovative new ways
to tap into that range of voices,”
Baxendale says.
LOOKING FORWARD: Finding out what matters most to
Christchurch residents about their city is the focus of a new
campaign from the city council.
“My Go-to After Exercise” Judy Bailey Recollects...
KORU NUTRITION
Former news presenter Judy
Bailey found herself wrestling
with an ongoing concern.
In maintaining her vibrant,
active lifestyle, she had begun
experiencing issues with her
joint health, particularly with
her foot, which was impeding
her daily routine.
Judy recounts a trip, “We
were travelling to the beautiful
Coromandel, a trip I had been
looking forward to, when
my foot started giving me its
familiar grief.” These aches
became a growing worry for
her, igniting the fear that it
could stop her from finishing
the anticipated tramp she had
planned.
Just a month prior, Judy had
received an invite to visit Koru
Nutrition’s manufacturing
facility located just north of
Christchurch. It was there that
she had the chance to witness
firsthand how they formulated
Koru FX, a unique blend of 16
natural ingredients designed
for joint support.
Her first impression left her
amazed. “I was so surprised
at just how much of the really
good ingredients make it into
this cream,” she said. Not
only did she learn about the
composition of the cream, but
she also had the privilege to
make her own batch. She was
astounded by the sheer amount
of essential oils and beneficial
ingredients that were packed
into the Koru FX cream.
With her foot troubles
escalating on her Coromandel
journey, Judy reached for
her tube of Koru FX Pro.
Expectantly, she applied it and
waited to see if it would make
a difference. After 15 minutes,
the support was palpable,
“I pulled over and rubbed
some on my foot...around 15
minutes later it was clear that
it had made a difference. I
was immensely thankful for
the support it provided. The
effects seemed to be longlasting
as well, since I didn’t
have to apply it again that
day.”
With over 60,000 Kiwis
finding support through
Koru FX, and its widespread
availability across various
community pharmacies, it’s
no surprise that Koru FX has
risen to become the leading
joint support cream in New
Zealand.
Always read the label and use as directed. If symptoms persist, see your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition, Christchurch.
Empowered by the synergy
of its 16 natural ingredients,
Judy Bailey discovered a
product she could trust to
keep her active and mobile.
It’s a testament to the deepabsorbing,
fast-acting, and
long-lasting natural joint
support provided by Koru FX
Pro.
SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Challenging Wills – the
Family Protection Act
Family relationships have become
more complex over the years. As a result
challenges to Wills have also become
more common. One way of challenging
a Will is under the Family Protection Act
1955. A spouse, de facto partner, child
or grandchild of a deceased person is
entitled to claim provision from an estate
if adequate provision has not been made
for their proper maintenance and support.
The Courts often refer to this as a failure of
“a moral duty” on the part of the deceased
person. In rare circumstances, where a
stepchild or parent was being financially
supported by the deceased person they can
also make a claim.
Claims are often made by adult children.
A breach of moral duty is judged by the
standards of a wise and just deceased
at the time of his or her passing. The
Courts adopt a broad approach and each
case is decided on its own particular
facts. Financial need and the health of
the child making the claim are often the
most important factors. However even if
an adult child is in good health and in a
good financial position they may still have
a valid claim. The Courts point out that
a child’s path through life is recognised
in a Will not only through financial
provision to meet financial needs but also
to recognise a child as belonging to the
family and of having been an important
part in the overall life of the deceased
person.
There are other factors which a Court
will consider. The relationship which the
Protecting you
through all stages
of life
child had with the deceased person will
always be important. However the fact that
a child was estranged from their deceased
parent does not disqualify a child from
making a claim. Sometimes the Court will
find that it was up to the parent to be the
“bigger person” and mend the relationship.
Grandchildren are not usually
considered by the Court as requiring
an award unless there are special
circumstances such as their own parent
dying before the deceased grandparent.
The Court is not restricted to particular
considerations and must be aware of
changing social attitudes over time. Due to
the infinite variety of fact situations there
can be no firm benchmark percentages for
claims by surviving children. Where there
is a large estate the Court is more likely
to make a larger award. However where a
child is well off and in good health awards
are typically modest.
A person making a Will may wish to
consider persons beyond family members.
Bearing in mind that a Will is often the
last message that a person will give to
their loved ones careful consideration is
required particularly if children are to be
treated unequally. Written reasons often
help in this regard.
There are other ways in which spouses,
children and non-family members can
challenge wills. As family relationships
become more complex Wills need to be
drafted to deal with those complexities.
A carefully crafted Will by a lawyer can
minimise the risks of a later challenge.
Natural support for
healthy joints
Joint issues will affect most of us at some time.
They can appear in any joint, such as neck, back,
shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles
and feet.
Cartilage is the protective surface between
moving bones that allows them to move freely. It
is constantly worn away and needs to be rebuilt
constantly. This repair process slows down for most
of us as we age. The result is not enough cartilage
in some joints causing the joint function to be less
smooth. This is the most common form of arthritis,
called osteoarthritis, and it leads to inflammation,
pain, stiffness and reduced joint mobility.
Joint pain can also be a factor in falls. Generally,
joints with the most use or stress show problems
first.
Many people seek pain relief from their doctor.
The usual prescription is non-steroidal antiinflammatory
drugs, or NSAIDs, which offer pain
relief but do nothing to stop the progression of
arthritis.
According to the British Journal of General
Practice, NSAIDs are not recommended for longterm
use and are responsible for 30% of hospital
admissions, mainly due to internal bleeding, heart
attack, stroke and renal damage. Research shows
that all NSAIDs double the risk of hospitalization
due to heart failure.
Supporting the body with the proper
supplementary nutrients is beneficial in helping
joint health for many people.
A local Christchurch company, Kiwi Natural
Health or KNH, has produced an advanced, highpotency
formula called “Joint Care Plus” to support
healthy joint function.
Inflammation of joints can cause pain and slows
the healing process. Joint Care Plus contains
turmeric, ginger and black pepper to help reduce
inflammation and pain and enhance digestion and
absorption of nutrients. The formula also contains
nutrients that have been researched to support joint
health, including boron, selenium, zinc, manganese,
proline and MSM, and the highly researched
glucosamine sulfate-potassium chloride complex, as
well as chondroitin sulfate.
This comprehensive formula is in an easy-toswallow
capsule. Due to the number of nutrients in
the formula, taking two or three capsules once daily
is recommended to achieve the necessary amount
of each nutrient. A loading dose of three capsules
twice daily may be used in severe cases.
KNH Joint Care and further information
is available from the natural health advisers,
naturopaths and medical herbalists at Marshall’s
Delphiniums
are among
the easiest
perennials to
grow from
seed.
PHOTO: ODT
Because life
is important.
IF THE weather seems to promise an early
spring, it is tempting to rush into seed
sowing, but a cautious approach will pay
off later, with fewer plant losses.
Vegetables
In warm corners, in the greenhouse
or under glass, a few seeds of cabbages,
cauliflower and brussels sprouts can be
sown. Bolder gardeners may also want to
try their luck with lettuce, spinach and
carrots, but the weather will determine
success.
Brussels sprouts should have priority in
terms of seed sowing, as they require the
longest growing season of the brassicas,
which include cabbage and cauliflower.
Sprouts will take two to three months
from sowing to transplanting into the
garden where they are to mature. Plants
will grow to 1m or more and may need
soil mounded firmly around their bases to
hold them in the ground.
The earliest potatoes may be planted
now, but will need protection from frost
when shoots come through.
Covering plants with frost cloth, or pea
straw piled loosely over the rows and held
in place with netting, are alternatives to
using newspaper when frost looks likely.
Rhubarb, jerusalem artichokes and
asparagus can be planted now. The site
for jerusalem artichokes should be chosen
with care; these tough relatives of the
sunflower can be invasive.
With no sign of growth in the lawn,
have your mower serviced and blades
sharpened now. Check garden tools and
sharpen secateurs, loppers and spades.
Always clean garden tools after use and
wipe blades of secateurs and loppers.
Flowers
Although sowing may be weeks or even
months away, do not delay buying seed, as
popular varieties are the first to go. Store
seed in airtight containers in a cool place.
Delphiniums are among the easiest
perennials to grow from seed. Pacific
Giants and Shogun will grow to 1m or
more, while Delphinium grandiflorum will
reach just 30cm.
Delphiniums come in shades of blue,
pinks and mauves, as well as white.
Generally, they come into their own a
year after planting out. Seed needs warm
conditions (18 deg C to 20 deg C) to
germinate, so do not rush to sow it.
If the weather is fine and the soil
not waterlogged, michaelmas daisies,
penstemons and phlox can be broken up
then replanted in well-composted soil to
give better flowers over the next two or
three seasons. If slugs and snails attack
young shoots, protect by surrounding the
plants with dry sawdust.
To divide these hardy perennials, lift the
clumps with a fork, then use a sharp spade
to slice through the plant.
Cleaning flower pots is a tedious task but
worth the effort to prevent the possibility
of disease. Scrub pots then dunk them in
boiling water.
The pros and cons
of building sites
When selecting a building site weigh up your lifestyle, family
needs and aspirations before signing up for any section.
Those purchasing early on in the
development of a subdivision will
have more choice of section size and
orientation to the street and sun. As
the individual sites are sold, there may
be less availability though this need
not be a deterrent. With good design
any building site can be made to work.
The size of the house and amount
of yard desired will influence the
feasibility of some building sites as
will sun and wind direction, bearing
in mind that a house can be designed
to capture the sun’s free heat and allow
for pleasant outdoor areas to enjoy.
If the street side of the building site
is north/north west, incorporating
fenced or planted courtyards can offer
private places to entertain and bask in
the sun.
Those wanting street presence
or keen on gardening may prefer a
corner section and while it might seem
they offer less privacy, with strategic
placement of fences quite the opposite
can be the case.
Weigh up your family’s needs in
terms of the outdoor areas too. Do you
want play areas for your children? Do
you have a need for off-street parking
throughout for a number Christchurch
of vehicles and space for
a boat, caravan or motorhome, which
may need to be parked out of site of
the street? How much lawn or garden
do you want?
Start by identifying housing
developments that you like and could
see your family living in. Think also
about the convenience of shops and
other amenities, something that may
or may not be a concern.
Single out possible sections then
talk with a designer or builder. Most
building companies have a good
selection of standard plans as a starting
point and they will usually work with
a client to modify a plan or draw up
one that will work on a particular
building site, whilst also containing
the components the client is seeking
within their new home.
Before signing up for any building
site, check the Council land zoning
and recession plane requirements as
well as covenants for the sub-division.
These will show not only how far from
a boundary the house can be sited but
also roof height, permissible building
materials, and acceptable types of
fencing, as well as what can be on
view from the street like a clothes line,
caravan or motorhome. Conducting
your research first will save any
frustration or hassles later.
All sections are workable, it is simply
a matter of choosing one that matches
your specific needs.
‘Surviving war is
a matter of luck’
Thursday, August 3, 2023
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
complete cessation of hostilities
of the Korean War, and
announced there were flares
let off and search lights shone
after celebrating his 92nd
birthday last week.
frontline remained a dangerous
Forbes Taylor well knows the
into the sky above the new
There was a feeling of
place. Forbes said it was really
night-time attacks by the
70th anniversary of that very
important ceasefire date – July
27, 1953.
Back 70 years ago Forbes,
a former Woolston resident
who now lives at Ngaio Marsh
Retirement Village, was near
the frontline of a war that had
been running for three years.
He remembers on the night
division between north and
south.
“I took effect at 10 o’clock at
night. The armistice was read
ou to us, and then suddenly all
the war zone lit up with search
lights and rockets and things.
It was a very colourful display
with all those lights from the
flare guns and search lights,”
he remembered the day
celebration amongs the allies
in the south because they had
won further ground to the
north of Seoul that would form
part of the new South Korea,
Forbes said.
The bitter conflict began in
June 1950, with North Korea
supported by China and the
Soviet Union. Talks concerning
an armistice had started as
early as July 10, 1951, bu the
a matter of luck as to whether
he and other fellow servicemen
survived.
It was June 1953 and Forbes
had not long been flown into
Gimpo Airport, near Seoul.
He had joined the Signals C or
‘Charlie Troop’ to help service
the telephone lines that were
used by 1st Commonwealth
division troops including in the
‘Battle of the Hook’.
He remembers desperate
Chinese, trying to capture Hook
valley territory before the July
ceasefire was called.
During this time repairs
were needed on the telephone
lines. The Chinese were repelled
by United Nations forces, he
said.
On one frontline occasion, a
shell exploded about 40 yards
(36.5 metres) away. But it could
have easily been much, much
closer.
