GLAM GLOW REVIVAL
After a €500-million investment
to renovate hotels, Cannes is now
in the final stages of an ecological
project to revamp its iconic seafront
boulevard, LA CROISETTE (cannesfrance.com).
Beyond enlarging the
beaches, the city is implementing
energy-saving measures with a hightech
underground thalasso-thermal
system. Coming soon: almost two
miles of pavement with gold-flecked
red granite, Art Deco-style benches,
and lush greenery.
sunlit panoramic 11th-floor suites (think
wooden decks, a Zen garden, and a whirlpool
tub) are veritable showstoppers. Other
exciting additions include French-Japanese
fusion cuisine at Mr. Nakamoto, cocktails on
the palm-shaded grassy garden patio, and
flavorful Italian cuisine at Hyde Beach, the
lively beach club.
For a great escape from Cannes’ buzzy
Croisette, it’s only a short boat ride to La
Guérite (cannes.restaurantlaguerite.com), a
Mediterranean restaurant and edge-of-thewater
beach club, tucked away on a tranquil

flat-rocked cove on the nearby island of
Sainte-Marguerite. It was once a fisherman’s
cabin where locals played pétanque; today,
it’s the place for a languorous lunch among
friends, with a Greek-inspired menu of grilled
seafood, barbecued meats, and an impressive
choice of wines, helmed by executive chef
Yiannis Kioroglou.
The ongoing Riviera surge of making the
old new again has also extended to the Cap
d’Antibes, where you step back into the Jazz Age
at the 43-room Hôtel Belles Rives (bellesrives.
com) Art Deco gem, formerly a villa where F.
Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald spent the summer
of 1926, working on “Tender is the Night.” This
elegant beachside classic, run by the Estène
family since 1929, combines everything from
beautifully preserved 1930s furnishings and
vintage bow windows to a newly remodeled
Fitzgerald Bar (try the signature Zelda Azzura,
infused with peach liqueur). And you won’t
go hungry. In addition to its superb Michelinstar
restaurant, La Passagère, headed by chef
Aurélien Véquaud, there’s also a beachside
terrace serving haute snack food, plus an
outstanding waterskiing school. Romantic, did
you say? Come sunset, guests drift onto the
terrace to watch the pink, coral, and mauve
reflections turn the Bay of Cannes into a
painterly seascape of hot colors.
Farther down the road, Cap d'Antibes
Beach Hotel (capdantibes-beachhotel.
com) is a discreet white low-slung 35-room
boutique hotel that you might mistake for a
contemporary private villa. Pourquoi? The
total remodeling has transformed every
aspect of this Relais & Châteaux stylish
beachside retreat, newly acquired by Adresses
Hotel Collection (La Ponche, Saint-Tropez).
