MAD FOR NOMAD
Manhattan’s buzziest district at the moment boasts a
full roster of new standout hotels. // By Farhad Heydari
IT HAD LONG BEEN the
preserve of low-rent T-shirt,
luggage, perfume, costume
jewellery, and wholesale
fashion retailers selling
socks, Tupperware, vaping
paraphernalia, cosmetics,
hair products, and the like,
which swallowed up vast
acres of storefront real
estate in a hitherto no-name
neighborhood. The New York
Times changed some of that
when, in 1999, it coined the
district, a one-time crossroad
of the city at the tailend of
the 18th century, as NoMad
(North of Madison Square).
Before too long, denizens
began looking beyond the
untidy vitrines to discover
some of the most iconic
French Renaissance
revival, Second Empire
Baroque and Beaux-Arts
architecture in the whole
of the city hiding in plain
sight. A new gilded age
had begun for a district
already steeped in history,
helped in part by the
pedestrianization of
sections of Broadway,
where pop-ups and dining
sheds now reign supreme.
