The Rise by Teman 20th Birthday Book

The Rise by Teman is a retirement village that has flourished over the past twenty years. In 2003, The Rise was only a handful of homes and a lot of sand. Now, it has grown into a thriving village with a rich history and wonderful memories. To celebrate this milestone, Teman produced a book to commemorate the village's growth over the years. It included stories from many groups within the village, old photos of the village being built, and memories of social events. This book was gifted to all residents, and here is a digital copy for you to enjoy.

happy
birthday
Dear Residents & Staff
It is with great joy and excitement that I wish to
extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and
every one of you for the 20th Birthday of The
Rise. There is nothing like purchasing a lifestyle
village during the middle of a global pandemic,
and it has been a great privilege to bring The
Rise into the Teman family.
I remember when I first visited The Rise and
had to quarantine in a hotel for 14 days before
I could meet everyone. But it was a great
pleasure meeting so many residents and
listening to your stories. From the moment I
came to The Rise, I knew that it was a special
place, filled with people who were passionate
about creating a community that was
welcoming, supportive, and fun.
As I look back over the years, I am struck by
how much we have accomplished together. We
have built a vibrant community that is filled
with laughter, kindness, and warmth. We have
supported each other through difficult times,
offering a helping hand or a listening ear
whenever it was needed.
And through it all, we have remained committed
to the values that make The Rise such a
special place. We are a community that values
diversity, inclusivity, and respect. We are
a community that believes in the power of
connection and the importance of supporting
one another.
As we celebrate our 20th birthday, I want to
take a moment to thank each and every one of
you for the role you have played in creating this
incredible community. Whether you have called
it home from the beginning or have joined us
more recently, you have helped to shape The
Rise into the welcoming and supportive place
that it is today.
I am honoured to be a part of this community,
and I look forward to many more years of working
together to make The Rise an even better place
to call home. Thank you for your kindness, your
generosity, and your unwavering commitment to
making The Rise a truly special place.
20 years of
fond memories
Margaret and Eddie Baldwin
Villa 71
Margaret and Eddie Baldwin, the dynamic
duo, have been living at The Rise for the past
20 years.
They’ve seen the community grow and evolve
over the years, and have many fond memories.
When Margaret and Eddie first stumbled upon
The Rise, they were immediately drawn to the
free standing, brick and tile villas, and the fact
that many of their friends were already living
in the area. They knew they had found their
perfect home.
Living in a gated community has given them an
added sense of security, and they can rest easy
knowing they’re in a safe environment. They’ve
also had a blast attending all of the fun events
put on by the community, like the Melbourne
Cup event and the Village & Rhythm night.
Margaret even started her own tap-dancing
group called the Nanna Tappers!
For anyone thinking about moving to a
retirement village, Margaret and Eddie suggest
doing it sooner rather than later, so you can
fully enjoy all the events and amenities. And
while aging can be scary, living in a village like
this has helped them realise that they’re not
alone in getting older.
Margaret and Eddie’s story is a beautiful
testament to the joys and benefits of living in
a retirement village. Congratulations to The
Rise on their 20-year anniversary, and here’s
to many more years of happy residents like
Margaret and Eddie.
But what Margaret and Eddie cherish most
about living in The Rise are the friendships
they’ve made and the social life they have.
They’ve formed lifelong bonds with their
neighbours, and always have someone to chat
with or lean on.
“a testament to the joys
and benefits of living in a
retirement village.”
moving
to the rise
Harvey Bell
Resident Committee Chairperson
Looking towards the future, Harvey has set
goals for the upcoming year. He wants to
ensure that all residents are informed of their
rights and responsibilities for their future
tenure at the village. Additionally, he hopes that
all social groups will feel comfortable bringing
forward any issues to the Resident Committee
to improve their lifestyle and enable more
residents to be involved in using the facilities.
Safety is always the committee’s first priority
when making decisions.
Harvey Bell found his perfect home at The
Rise by Teman. After years of searching for the
right lifestyle village, Harvey finally stumbled
upon The Rise. The brick and tile villas, the
proximity to his family, and the amazing lifestyle
amenities convinced him that this was the
place for him to call home.
Harvey quickly became involved in the
community and spent six months on the
Resident Committee. His passion for the village
inspired him to apply for the Chairperson’s
position and he was thrilled to be elected. As
Chairperson, Harvey has learned that change
can be challenging, but with the committee’s
knowledge and expertise, they can make
forward-thinking decisions that benefit the
entire community.
Despite the challenges, Harvey loves being
the Chairperson of the Resident Committee.
He enjoys meeting more residents and finding
common ground to make the village better. He
is especially proud of the committee members
whose work has been to a very high standard.
He also expresses gratitude to all the village
volunteers who run the events that make the
community what it is today.
As The Rise by Teman celebrates its 20th
anniversary, Harvey reflects on the memories,
achievements, and contributions of its
members. The village remains a place where
seniors can live comfortably, safely, and with
a sense of community. Congratulations to The
Rise on this amazing milestone!
The committee’s most successful initiative has
been involving all members and pooling their
expertise to tackle problems within the village,
together with the support of management. From
solar power to the swimming pool, their input
has helped with forward planning and ensured
that the village facilities remain at a high
standard.
village
manager
Ciara Purcell
Village Manager
Ciara’s career has been nothing short of
impressive! From Village Administrator to
Assistant Village Manager, and finally to Village
Manager, each role has given her a unique
perspective on the village’s needs. But what
Ciara loves most about her job is seeing the
residents happy and thriving in their retirement.
The village has become a tight-knit community
where like-minded individuals engage in
activities and socialise with each other - it’s the
perfect place to be if you’re over 65!
During her time at The Rise, Ciara’s perspective
on aging has shifted. She’s seen how active and
social residents in their 80s and 90s can be.
Retirement living truly opens up a whole world
of possibilities, and Ciara is grateful for the
opportunity to be a part of The Rise by Teman.
She’s excited to see what the future holds for the
village!
Ciara even knows what she would do if she were
a resident herself. She would take part in all the
activities the village has to offer, especially aqua
aerobics, Zumba, and walking classes. And let’s
not forget the themed social events! Ciara loves
getting dressed up and having a good time.
When new residents move in feeling anxious and
nervous about their decision, Ciara shares her
most heart-warming story. As they settle in and
find their favourite activities, they start building
friendships and feeling like they made the right
choice.
If Ciara could pick any celebrity to visit the
village, she’d invite Mary Berry to hold a
workshop for all the wonderful bakers in the
community. And since pets are an important
part of many seniors’ lives, Ciara would also love
to have Chris Brown, the renowned veterinarian,
conduct a workshop on pet care or elderly pets.
Ciara has some excellent advice for anyone
considering retirement living - don’t wait! If
you’re thinking about it, you’re already halfway
there. Take the leap when the time feels
right. Retirement living opens up so many
opportunities for seniors to be young again.
Village Manager – continued
“Retirement living opens up
so many opportunities for
seniors to be young again.”
from the
beginning
Cathy Nicolle
WA Sales Manager
I have had the pleasure of watching The Rise
community grow from a humble paddock to the
vibrant and beautiful community it is today. I
vividly remember the first sales rep working out
of a makeshift office, passionately sharing the
vision of what The Rise could be. Being part of
the team since 2005, and becoming the selling
consultant in 2012, has allowed me to witness
the evolution of The Rise firsthand.
From the very beginning, The Rise has attracted
strong interest and it’s no surprise why. The
location is simply perfect, with so many amenities
at your fingertips. It’s no wonder that word-ofmouth
and referrals from happy residents have
been a major factor in its success.
When it comes to lifestyle villages, The Rise
is a true success story. As someone who is
passionate about this community, I can see
how it’s a wonderful and fun place to live. The
beautiful surroundings are just the cherry on
top. But, what truly makes The Rise special is
the community of people who call it home. It’s
amazing to see friendships being formed later in
life and The Rise is the perfect place to facilitate
these connections.
If I had to describe The Rise in three words, I
would choose friendly, beautifully maintained,
and fun. The social events organised by resident
volunteers are always a hit, and everyone is
always included. It’s no wonder that The Rise has
become a haven for anyone looking for a vibrant
and welcoming community in which to live.
Lastly, I want to wish everyone a happy birthday!
It’s a privilege to be a part of this wonderful
community and I’m looking forward to many more
years of happiness and friendship at The Rise.
village
bowls
Bowls after 20 years of Village Life
In 2007/8, bowling green was laid on the
ground where residents had held their first
Christmas party. Kangaroos even came to
watch the first Happy Hours on the clubhouse
verandah! Since then, the Bowling Group has
become a tight-knit social group, finding fun,
friendship, and exercise through playing bowls.
They’re not just a bowling club, but a sub-group
of residents who belong to all sorts of different
groups.
In the early days, five ladies and loyal treasurer
Peter Reynolds organised matches against
other villages like Harbourside, Cambrai, and
later Kingsway Court. But the original carpet
was rough and scratched the bowls, so a new
all-weather surface was miraculously laid in
June 2015. What a difference! Later that same
year, the group installed lights over the green,
which enabled residents to play at night during
the hot months of December to April. Night
Bowls thrived and is still enjoyed today.
In November 2018, the group
celebrated 10 years of village bowling
with a fun day of wacky bowling such
as through your legs or masked. All
and sundry were invited, and even the
management staff took part.
Covid came in 2020 as a different
adversary, but since bowling is an
outdoor sport, it was able to continue
with a few new rules to obey, like
sanitising mats and chairs and
maintaining distance. Thankfully, things
are back to normal now, and the game
continues to provide residents with fun,
friendship, and exercise.
When the ladies organising things became
weary, Peter Whittle offered to run things but
sadly became ill before he could oblige. Ray
Morrell took his place and gathered around him
a committee of people with skills in the areas
required. Since then, the group has thrived
with social days and internal competitions
like men’s and ladies’ pairs or triples and with
the matches against other village adversaries
continuing.
The Craft Group has been knitting and crocheting for years, and we love getting together every
Wednesday for a cuppa and a good chat. Our crafty creations are displayed on our “Craft Table” and
are available for purchase at a very reasonable cost. All funds raised go towards covering the cost of
materials, and any surplus money is donated to three different charities each year. Last Christmas,
we were thrilled to donate $3000 and some cozy blankets to those in need. It’s incredibly fulfilling to
see our hard work make a difference in the world. If you’re looking to join a fun and friendly group of
lue tree
project
club
Have you ever wondered what to do with a
tree that has seen better days?
Instead of saying goodbye to it, a group of
clever residents at The Rise by Teman came up
with a fantastic idea. They decided to give it a
makeover and turn it into a Blue Tree! You might
be wondering what a Blue Tree is. Well, it’s part
of a global movement that has over 600 trees
around the world painted blue, from Australia to
England and the USA. The Blue Tree Project was
inspired by the sad story of Jayden Whyte, who
struggled with mental health issues and didn’t
receive the support he needed. The project aims
to raise awareness about mental health and
encourage people to have hard conversations
and seek help if they are feeling down.
The Blue Tree Project wants to be part of a
change that informs the healthcare system
of where it’s failing people. The blue trees
painted across the nation can act as a visual
reminder to check in with friends and family
and to break down the stigma surrounding
mental health. By spreading the paint and the
message that help is available, the project
hopes to make it okay to not be okay and break
down the stigma that is still largely attached to
mental health.
Welcome to The Rise Book Club.
Our group of 12-14 bookworms has a unique
approach to enjoying literature. Once a month,
we gather together to share our current reads
and lead discussions. It’s a great way to
discover new books and make new friends.
During our meetings, we also enjoy a lovely
afternoon tea, with each member taking turns
to bring something delicious to share. With
such a diverse group, we are exposed to a wide
range of genres, from romance to mystery and
everything in between.
We’re proud to say that six of our members
have been with us for over 10 years, but we
always welcome new faces. So, if you’re looking
to join a fun and engaging book club, look no
further than The Rise Book Club.
The message behind the blue tree is all about
being okay with feeling blue and reminding
everyone that it’s totally okay to not be okay.
Our amazing residents Bob Harrison, Debbie
Bartle, Russ Bartle & Mal McFarlane, even
added an RUOK sign to the mix! The blue paint
was bought with the recycling money collected
by Dick Sloan, who takes cans and bottles to
our local recycle centre, and the hobby shed
donated the rest of the funds. This was truly
a group effort and a remarkable initiative. So
next time you see a Blue Tree, take a moment
to check in with yourself and your loved ones.
And remember, it’s okay to not be okay.
cats
& dogs
A tribute to the furry residents of our village
Ellaine Jopling
Toffee, Chloe, Pretzel, Harley, Gabby, Dorry,
Mitch, Katie and Tippy are the names I
remember well as the beautiful dogs who
kept my husband entertained in the final and
difficult months of his life. These delightful dogs
and their thoughtful owners came along every
afternoon to visit David for a pat and tasty treat
(the dogs, not the owners!) The photos paint
a picture better than words. I’m sure Jo, Dot,
Joan, Sandra, Colleen, Peter, Gordon and Erna
know how much they were appreciated!
Some of us will remember homeless cat Cindy
who provided a much needed tonic for David
when she chanced upon him one day. Although
very timid at first, David soon gained her trust
and they became firm friends.
The dogs and Cindy mixed well generally but
sometimes Cindy needed to do the superior cat
thing and give them a “right paw hook”! But,
there were no hard feelings. The dogs took it in
their stride.
Joan B. saw a need in the winter months to
protect Cindy from the cold, so she made a
Cindy-approved, comfy ‘cubby house’.
When David left us, Cindy was kindly taken in by
our neighbours Bob and Marg and she became
their cat. It was opportune for them as their old
and dear cat, William, had sadly died. He was
‘bold and beautiful’!
It seems as if stray cats decide to “adopt” we
unsuspecting humans as new caretakers. My
thoughts go to a big, brown and fluffy lost soul
that chose Maureen and Doug. She charmed
them completely and gently encouraged them
to share their tuna - much to Doug’s disgust!
Noah, grandson of Sandra and Bernie, liked to
cart her around under his arm. It was mutual
adoration.
Subsequently this gorgeous girl was found to
have an identifying chip which revealed her
name to be ‘Kitty’. She was 11 years old.
Somehow Kitty had lost her owners and was
on the lookout for new ones. She was always
assured of finding breakfast at my house and
lunch and dinner at various other locations in
The Rise, especially Maureen and Doug’s Villa!
Some of the dogs who will greet you around
the village are Riley, Bella, Pretzel, Max, Harley,
Chloe x 3, Rosie, Cooper, Holly, Daisy, Sookie,
Champ, Rusty, Sophie x3, Ryvita, Amber, Bob,
Suzie, Dexter, Penny, Katie, Elliott (the dancer),
Nigel, Honey, Tyler, Ollie, Miri and Lucky. The
greyhounds, the new and elegant look in
the village, provide sport for the little dogs -
they run through their legs! If you’re special
and lucky, Notorious may bestow on you an
approving look as he drives through the village
with his owner.
Dogs are great! If you want to de-stress, I urge
you to join the dogs and their owners at the
“dog run” in the afternoons. You will meet dogs
of all shapes, sizes, colours and personalities.
They will delight you.
Of course, we will never forget those canines
and felines who are not with us anymore. (If I
have left out some names please forgive me.)
thank you to all
our volunteers
The Rise is a special place where magic
happens every day. It’s a vibrant community,
a social hub where people come together to
connect, socialise, and have fun. And one of the
key ingredients that makes The Rise so special
is the army of volunteers who give up their time
and energy to make it all possible.
From the Biggest Morning Tea to the Melbourne
Cup, from Remembrance Day to Anzac Day, our
volunteers are there, making sure everything
runs smoothly and everyone has a great time.
They’re the ones who set up the tables, pour
the tea, and serve the food. They’re the ones
who make sure the bar is stocked and the
drinks are cold. They ensure the bowls group
have tournaments and interclub games. They’re
the ones who clean up after everyone else and
make sure everything is ready for the next event.
So, to all of the volunteers who have given
up their time over the years, we want to say
thank you. Thank you for your hard work, your
dedication, and your kindness. Thank you for
making The Rise the special place that it is
today.
And to anyone who is thinking about
volunteering, we say this: do it! It’s one of the
most rewarding things you can do. You’ll make
new friends, learn new skills, and make a real
difference in the lives of others. So come on
down to The Rise and join our amazing team
of volunteers.
But it’s not just the big events that our
volunteers make possible. It’s the little things
too. Like the hobby shed where people can
come and work on their projects, or the monthly
social events where people can come and catch
up with old friends and make new ones. It’s
the cooking and cleaning and organising that
goes on behind the scenes, making sure that
everything is just right.
And all of this hard work and dedication has
paid off. The Rise is now a thriving social
hub that brings so much joy and happiness
to so many people. It’s a place where people
can come together, no matter their age or
background, and feel like they belong.
Karen
Sharon is a hair stylist extraordinaire! Since
2008, she’s been cutting and styling hair at The
Rise, and it all started with a nudge from her
friend Lisa Connolly, the village manager at the
time. Sharon introduced herself to the residents
over coffee, and before she knew it, Thursday
became her regular day at the salon.
Sharon’s had so many great experiences with
her clients over the years, but one of the most
memorable was when Pat Chamberlain of Unit
39 asked her to shave all her hair off in aid of
Breast Cancer Awareness. And it was a huge
success - Pat raised over $2500!
But it’s not just about the hair - Sharon loves
getting to know her clients, listening to their
stories, and having a good laugh with them.
She feels like they’re preparing her for what’s
to come in life, and she appreciates their
company.
Of course, it’s not always easy seeing her
clients slow down due to injury or illness,
but Sharon is always eager to help. She even
offers to visit their homes if they can’t make
it to the salon. After all, she knows that when
we look good, we feel good too!
Sharon is so grateful for all the clients she’s
met at The Rise, and she can’t wait to meet
many more in the years to come.
Karen is a hairdresser with over 40 years of
experience! For the past 13 years, she’s been
styling the hair of the lovely residents at The
Rise. Karen’s story at The Rise began in a
unique way - her husband, Paul, was working
on some plumbing and gas works in the village
and noticed that the salon was empty. Karen
then approached the management to rent the
salon and has been serving the community ever
since.
Karen has seen it all, including some unusual
hairstyle requests. She once had a client who
asked her to cut their hair short to make it look
longer - now that’s creative thinking! But Karen
is always up for a challenge and adapts to every
client’s needs.
Working with elderly clients can be challenging,
but Karen knows that good communication and
listening to their needs is key to getting a good
outcome. She takes the time to understand
each client and their individual needs to create
a hairstyle that they’ll love.
To top it all off, Karen’s most memorable
compliment came from a client who told her
that strangers would stop them in the street
and ask where they got their hair done, even
wanting to take a photo! For Karen, this is the
ultimate compliment and a testament to her
skill and dedication to her craft.
Aside from her amazing hairdressing skills,
Karen is also a great listener and loves hearing
the life stories of her clients. It’s no surprise
that she’s heard many funny stories over the
years, which always brighten her day. Karen’s
clients are getting older, but they all strive to
keep up with modern styles and look their best.
Karen’s most common request is whether she
does face lifts, which she has to explain that
she’s a hairdresser, not a plastic surgeon. But
Karen takes every request seriously and listens
to her clients’ needs to ensure they are happy
with the outcome.
The year I turned 20, my
girlfriend Helen and I
sailed to Southampton on
the ship “Canberra” for a
working holiday. We stayed
in London for awhile and
worked, then bought
a little car and toured
Europe for 4 months.
I was working at Kwolyn
Hotel as a cook. I got
married at 20 and went
to live on a farm with my
husband Alf in Ardoth.
We belonged to many
sporting/social groups.
Then settled down and
had 4 kids.
We were in Papua New
Guinea. Marion was
with the Australian
High Commission and
Cameron was working with
helicopters in oil and gas
exploration out in the bush.
We pretty much spent
most of the ‘80s in PNG.
At 20 we were getting
married. We have been
married 66 years, known
each other 71 years and
still living happily in our
villa at the Rise by Teman
for 18 years.
The year I turned 20 was
the year my father passed
away. I had just ‘bombed
out’ of Pharmacy studies
when I realised the idea
of my life being spent
listening to everyone’s
ailments was not my
scene. I started my
surveying studies which
was on the job being away
in the bush, fresh air and
sunshine. An ideal start to
an enjoyable life.
At 20 I was a young
married mum of 2 boys.
My husband was a
teacher and we lived in
Dumbleyung. This was not
long after Campbell had
broken the speed limit
on the lake. Great place,
great memories, fantastic
people and happy times.
When I was 20 I was living
in Dublin and working
full time doing medical
administration in a
paediatric hospital. I had
just bought my first home
on the outskirts of Dublin
city and we got engaged
on Christmas Day. I went
on holiday to Tenerife
& Mallorca that year
(buying a house was very
stressful)
At 20 I was working in
Perth as an Orthopaedic
Secretary at Royal Perth
Hospital. During that
year, I met my future
husband Mort, who
proposed to me after
just one month (still
happily married 54 years
later!) and spent the rest
of that year preparing
and organising for our
wedding and becoming a
farmer’s wife.
I was working in London in
the film industry working
on various feature films,
tv commercials, special
The year I turned 20
was the year that I got
married. My parents were
very against the marriage
as the man is a pen
pusher and all our family
came from artisans &
tradesman.
When I was 20 I was
I met at Primary School.
We had our eldest
hobby
shed
Ten years ago, a group of 12 passionate men at
The Rise came together to start a Hobby Shed,
but who would have thought it would evolve
into such a wonderful community hub? Under
the guidance of the inaugural Chairman, Mike
Allen, the group started with just $200 from
four attendees and a $10 annual membership
fee. Thanks to their hard work and dedication,
they were awarded a grant of $2,000 from
the Lottery Commission, which was used
to purchase equipment and establish the
workshop.
But the Hobby Shed is more than just a wood
and metal shop - it’s a place for socialising,
staying active, and learning new skills. At The
Rise, we understand the importance of staying
connected and engaged, especially as we get
older. The Hobby Shed has been a fantastic way
for residents to continue using their skills or
learn new ones, all while enjoying the company
of like-minded people.
The group’s dedication to giving back to the
community is truly inspiring. Every Christmas,
the Hobby Shed donates over 500 handmade
toys to charity. They also love helping their
fellow residents by restoring chairs or other
items that have seen better days. But perhaps
the best part of the Hobby Shed is the laughter
and camaraderie that fills the air. Whether
you’re working on a project or taking a coffee
break, you’re sure to have a great time.
Thanks to the support of the residents
committee, Teman management, and
the funds they’ve raised, the Hobby
Shed recently underwent a major
expansion. The metal workshop now
has its own standalone shed, and a
new storage shed was built. The project
took a bit longer than expected due to
material shortages and Covid-19, but
the end result is worth it. The wood
workshop can now accommodate up
to 15 people at a time, and the metal
workshop can fit 8.
We’re so grateful for Mike Allen, who
has been with the Hobby Shed from the
beginning. In recognition of his longstanding
commitment to the group, the
new metal shed has been named after
him. “The Mike Allen Shed”. We hope
that the Hobby Shed at The Rise by
Teman will continue to be a wonderful
space for creativity, socialising, and
staying active for many years to come.
“honouring Mike’s
legacy with our group’s
dedication to giving back.”
keep
fit classes
love the
library
Jan
Coordinator of Keep Fit classes
About 9 years ago, I had a thought that a lot
of people are unable to get out to join exercise
groups - so why not arrange one within our
village.
I approached Nina who was taking prime mover
classes, she agreed to come and run the class
here.
In taking the idea to management at this time, I
was so disappointed when they said no.
Luckily Ray Thompson , who was chairman of the
residents committee, heard about my request.
The library at The Rise has survived through the dedication of volunteers that ensure everything is
in order. As you walk into the library, look up and you’ll see a plaque that reads, Lynn Perry Library.
Lynn was the first librarian and got things off the ground. Peter Reynolds took over the librarian
duties and did a fantastic job for many years. When Harvey Bell first laid my eyes on the library, he
knew that he had to be a part of it. Harvey loves books and he knew a few tweaks he could make
to the library to make it safer and more accessible to everyone. The top shelf was just too high and
getting books down from there was an accident waiting to happen. And, the centre island made
it tough for anyone with mobility issues to navigate their way around. So, with the help of some
amazing folks like Robin Warnock, Ted Steddy, and the Hobby Shed, they got to work and made
some changes. They modified the shelving, created more space for books, and made it safer and
easier to use. All of this was made possible by the Resident Committee who funded the project for
less than $200.00. And, let’s not forget about our wonderful volunteers who keep the library clean
and organised. Although they have a small budget of $50.00 per month to purchase new books, it’s
really the donations from the generous residents that keep the collection growing. Thanks to all of
you, The Rise library is thriving and continues to be a beloved part of our community.
He asked me to write a letter stating my reasons
and he would personally take it to the village
manager.
Upon approval and Nina’s enthusiasm for the
idea, we have been enjoying classes ever since.
Even during Covid restrictions, we had DVD discs
made and supplied to every member, so we
could continue doing our work outs at home. I
even got Laurie to do it - but he gave up after the
first effort.
We are always happy when some ladies come on
their frames or electric buggies, as that is what
this class is all about - exercising as much as
you can. Even if that is only arms, that is good.
For some, the most beneficial part is meeting up
with other people and talking. This is achieved
during the tea/coffee session after the class.
line
dancing
Pat Paterson
Villa 50
In 2008, Renée Nash had a brilliant idea: why
not start a line dancing class? And who better
to lead us than the fabulous Sin Bishop from
Apache Rebels? We were all eager to learn,
except for Renée and Joan Farrell, who were
already pros. They graciously taught us the
ropes until I took over the practice sessions
later on.
Val Hodge joined us in 2012, and we made
great progress under her guidance. However,
she had to step down in 2019, leaving me to
reluctantly take over. With the help of Karen
Makin from Makin Memories Line Dancers,
I’ve been in charge for four years now! Time
flies when you’re having fun, but I must admit
it’s been a bit harder as I’ve grown older. My
legs don’t move as fast as they used to, but my
enthusiasm is still going strong.
Sadly, not many of the original members are
still here, but Brenda, Teresa, Joan Farrell (not
shown in the photo), and I are still kicking up
our heels. I’m always hopeful that someone
else will take over the reins one day. It’s getting
harder to keep up with the years and my health,
but I still believe in the power of line dancing.
It’s a great way to stay active and agile, and you
don’t need any fancy equipment or shoes to
do it. Plus, we’re lucky enough to have one of
the best dance floors in Perth at The Rise. So,
come on down and join us!
card
making
Sandra Frayne
Villa 231
The Card Making group is the place to be if
you love crafting, scrapbooking and creating
beautiful cards. Founded in 2008 by the
talented residents Hilaire Reynolds and Merle
Illingworth, the group has been a creative
hub in the village ever since. From humble
beginnings in a small craft area behind the
stage, the group quickly grew and moved
to the main hall to accommodate the many
enthusiastic members.
Every Tuesday morning, our lovely ladies meet
to create stunning cards, share ideas and
have fun. Once a month, we dedicate a full
day to scrapbooking, where we get to indulge
in our passion for creating beautiful pages.
Our group is very organized - we have a roster
system for designing and instructing, and
even for bringing morning tea. We collect a
small fee of $2.00 each week, which we use to
purchase new equipment and consumables to
use in our group.
One of the highlights of our monthly meetings
is having a visiting Stampin’ Up demonstrator
to show us new ideas, equipment, and
techniques. Our first demonstrator for 5 years
was Yvonne Pree followed by Kim Kemball
who has been with us since 2019. Both ladies
are amazing! We always look forward to Kim’s
visits, where she brings along a kit for each lady
to create a unique card.
We also have a couple of talented ladies who
display their cards on the village craft table
for sale to the residents. We welcome any new
residents to join us on Tuesday mornings and
discover the joy of creating beautiful cards,
have a cuppa, and a chat. You don’t need any
experience - just a love for crafting!
a royal
occasion
Contribution by Ellaine Jopling, Ian
Taylor and the Residents’ Social Club,
Chris Jones (photographs) Suzette
(flowers), and all the residents who
came along dressed to the nines.
Tiered elegant cake stands loaded with
delectable sweet and savoury delicacies
were to be found on each table. Elegantly
cut and presented sandwiches, including the
traditional cucumber variety, were placed on
Royal Daulton, Royal Albert, Minton and other
exquisite china. The Ritz London comes to mind
in describing the room with its many tables set
so carefully and artistically. It seemed a shame
to actually eat these works of art but we did!
Beautiful flower arrangements were hung like
chandeliers from the ceiling.
We ask the question, what was this event?
Well, of course, The Rise by Teman residents
were celebrating Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s
Platinum Jubilee on Sunday 16th October 2022.
Thirty-two trees were planted in her honour in
the village ranging from a variety of flowering
gums to evergreen Magnolias.
The opportunity to dress up doesn’t happen
too often so guests seized upon the
opportunity to don their best attire in accord
with the importance of the occasion. There
were extravagantly decorated hats; sporting
feathers, beads, jewels and other unique
embellishments. Some ladies chose the more
minimalistic trendy fascinator. The menfolk also
were equally resplendent in their formal wear.
The Britishness of the occasion was
emboldened with the presence of the Yeoman
Wardens (beefeaters from the Tower of
London!) whilst the London Bobbies patrolled
the cakes!
The Hon Tracey Roberts, Linda Aitkin,
Mayor City of Wanneroo, Councillor Sonet
and Mr Xavier Coetzee were our attending
dignitaries who spoke about the significance
of the occasion. Mr Mal McPherson gave the
“Welcome to Country” address.
This exclusive high tea at The Rise was an
occasion that people still talk about.
Around the world, thousands of volunteers
planted more than three million trees and
saplings. The Queen’s Green Canopy project
began in March 2021 when her Majesty
planted a tree with her son. Two years on, it has
ended with King Charles III planting one with
his son.
Following the Queen’s death, however, it was
extended so more trees could be planted in
Her late Majesty’s memory. Very recently King
Charles III, with Prince William by his side,
thanked all those around the world who had
honoured his mother for being part of the
planting.
Afternoon tea is the most quintessential of
English customs, thought to date back to the
7th duchess of Bedford (around 1840) when
she became “peckish” in the gap between
lunch and dinner. She definitely had a GRAND
idea. There were no “peckish” guests at our
High Tea!
The piece de resistance was a cake made
especially for the occasion in shape and colours
of the Union Jack. A Busby Guard stood over the
cutting of the cake.
a day of
remembrance
In 2018, The Rise was buzzing with
excitement as our residents planned a special
Remembrance Day celebration to honour
100 years since the end of World War 1. Our
talented knitters created stunning poppies in
the colours of red, white, and purple (purple for
the animals who suffered during that time and
white for peace).
One of our residents designed a beautiful
wooden sign, painted with the number 100,
which was proudly displayed at the entrance
of the village with 100 poppies surrounding it.
It was truly breathtaking and a fitting tribute to
the fallen.
Residents showed their national pride by
decorating their houses with flags from their
country of origin. The service itself was very
moving, with a Bag Piper opening the event and
two Cadets from the Wanneroo Army present to
assist with the flag raising.
After the service, we gathered in the gazebo for
a Village Celebration filled with entertainment
and activities to mark this unique occasion.
There was something for everyone, including
a chocolate wheel with prizes generously
donated by local businesses and residents, and
a beautiful quilt made by one of our talented
residents was raffled off.
We raised an amazing $922.00 on the day,
which we donated to Legacy. It was a truly
special day that brought our community
together to honour and remember those who
sacrificed so much for our freedom.
social
committee
Ian Taylor (2017 to 2022)
Social Co-ordinator
Hello, I’m Ian! My wife Sue and I moved into the
village back in 2009 while we were still working
full time. We quickly made friends and attended
most functions. It wasn’t until 2017 that I
became the Social Co-ordinator, and I continued
in that role until October 2022.
As soon as I started, I realized that it was too
big a job to do on my own. That’s why I formed a
social committee, and we organized one dinner
dance per month. We were lucky enough to
secure the services of Pierre from 17Catering
as our chef. We also introduced a once-a-month
Sunday roast, which is still very successful. And
following on with “Pub Grub @the Club” once a
month on a Friday - a no-frills event.
Our Saturday dinner dance became either a
themed night from different countries, such
as Italy, Germany, and Ireland, or otherwise a
dress-up for black and white night, Melbourne
Cup with fancy hats and ties, and Roaring
20’s with feather boas galore. The money
made from these events went back into buying
decorations, like Xmas, Irish & Italian flags &
memorabilia, cheeseboards and many more
things to make the functions come alive to
the theme of the evening. We even went so
far as myself and Bernie Frayne (the then
Chairperson) to dress up as elves to accompany
Father Christmas (Nigel Brown) in bringing gifts
of chocolates to the tables.
One of our greatest achievements was the
Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee High Tea.
We catered for 140 people, and the tables
were set to a high standard with china cups
and saucers, tiered cake stands, and elegant
teapots. Suzette Warren had decorated many
flower arrangements, from swags and hanging
circular garlands to posies and bouquets – a big
job to compliment the room, bringing that garden
party feel. The ambiance was enhanced by some
of the residents’ wearing costumes, including
a Beefeater, Welsh Guard, Keeper of the Crown
Jewels, and even a Queen Anne and King along
with two English bobbies to keep the peace.
In early 2020, COVID struck WA and the village,
with all facilities going into lockdown a couple of
times. When we re-opened, it was with restricted
numbers, which was a challenge as with low
numbers it was hard to break even. But we
pushed on and came out the other side still with
our heads above water. Our first lockdown was
over the Easter holidays, with residents’ spirits
down. So, we did our first Easter egg delivery.
This was very much appreciated and has
become an annual event.
Lastly, I want to thank the social committee,
which varied over the years during my time. My
wife Sue did all my computer work, including
advertising of events, table lists, and minutes
and notes for me. Sandra Frayne was my
deputy, Nigel Brown was the muscles of the
team, Wendy Johnson, Marg Albert, Janette
Arndt, Laurie Campbell, Ken Smallwood, Neville
Roylance, Vicky Armstrong, Paul Fleming,
Heather Brine, Noeleen Engelbrecht, Mike & Lyn
Corrigan and many others helped out at times
when needed. Especially the then Chairperson
Bernie Frayne who always helped to set up and
breakdown. A big thank you to them all. If I have
missed anybody, I apologise.
When I was retiring as Social Co-ordinator, no
one was interested in the position until a new
resident came to see me and indicated that they
would like to know more and what was involved.
I explained it all to them, and they spoke with
the present committee and duly took over. That
was Jan & Kerry Eustance who are doing a good
job to date in their first year, so please continue
supporting them as you supported me.
