outdoors PENARTH CLIFFTOP Considered an easy route, you can start at Penarth Pier, along the promenade and head up the hill westwards. This will take you up onto the cliffs that overlook Penarth beach and on towards Lavernock and The Bendricks. There are also some quiet meadows behind - perfect for summer evening strolls. COASTALwalks After the scorch and burn of a hot summer's day, head to the coast to cool off and chill out. Here are our hand-picked favourites. NASH POINT You can park your car at the small car park (pay and display) before heading off down the path that leads to the lighthouse. On summer evenings, you'll be rewarded with gorgeous views across the Bristol Channel - all the way to Somerset and down to Devon. If you want to venture further on, there is a cliff top walk that includes a few steep steps. There is also a small cafe at the lighthouse, which is open during the daytime. LLANTWIT MAJOR You'll follow the Col-huw River on the way down to the coastal path. The beach has some patches of sand but mostly pebble, and is backed by ancient cliffs, where you may find a fossil or two. Views from the beach extend to Minehead and Exmoor and there is also a small car park available. SKER BEACH Sker Beach is the most westerly of Porthcawl's beaches and can only be reached by walking from Rest Bay or the Kenfig National Nature Reserve. It is a mostly flat and sandy beach, one that's used mostly by the locals, meaning that it is one of the quieter beaches in the area. As such, there are no amenities there. GOWER Further afield, the coastal path at the Gower takes in the whole range of our fabulous coastline, from wide golden beaches and dramatic cliffs to saltmarsh and sand dunes. The path itself acts as a section of the 870-mile Welsh Coast Path but even small sections are perfect for an evening walk. The beach at Rhossili is three miles long and Cefn Bryn and Rhossili Down rise above the inland hills to soar over the coastline, affording you fantastic views towards Pembrokeshire and Devon. 35
