Welcome to your latest issue of
Rhiwbina Living.
The summer months are all
about being free and easy and
feeling good. The days and
nights are longer, and the warm
weather allows us to go out and
explore the world around us.
But sometimes, it's not that
straightforward. In a world where
we can often feel alone and
detached from others, despite
the cheery weather, Tim Riley
outlines the benefits of signing
with others.
We've also got a great feature
about stoicism. This philosophy
is designed to help you live
your best possible life by
maximising positive emotions,
reducing negative emotions, and
helping you hone your virtues of
character.
If retail therapy is more your
thing, we've handpicked
essential travel items to pack for
your holidays this year and we've
also singled out some books to
take with you.
The seaside is one place we
love to spend our time during
the warmer months and we've
shortlisted some wonderful
coastal walks to enjoy.
If you're of a certain age, you
may remember the SAS raid
on the Iranian Embassy in 1980.
Watched by millions on TV,
the army's elite were sent in to
rescue hostages that were being
held at gunpoint. It was a defining
moment in British history. Robin
Horsfall was one of the troops
that stormed the building that
Bank Holiday Monday evening.
The SAS veteran now lives just
outside north Cardiff. His life story
so far is like something out of a
novel. We spoke to him about his
extraordinary experiences.
Nigel Lewis returns with more
wonderfully detailed history of
our local area. Rhiwbina would
have looked very different
200 years ago and through
meticulous research, Nigel paints
a very rural and agricultural
version of our village in times
gone by.
There's more history to discover
throughout our local area as we
take a look at Roman Wales.
The area was a great source of
mineral wealth when the Romans
landed here in 48AD and they
made themselves very much
at home. Evidence of their time
spent here can still be explored
today; we show you where.
The children (and adults!) of
Llanishen Fach Primary will
no doubt be making the most
of their summer break but
we've heard about what they
got up to during the warmer
school months at the end of the
academic year.
We've also got plenty of other
features to whet your appetite for
a great summer, including poetry
from local residents and even a
short story. So make the most of
the longer days, enjoy the lovely
weather (if we get any) and we'll
see you in our next issue in the
autumn!
