A hot, hot spot for you and your date
Hidden away in a lush, secret garden in Sandton,
you’ll find a 5-star hotel. But this is not any hotel …
it’s more of an inner-city retreat where the setting
speaks to your senses. And the destination for a
duluxe night spa overnight experience.
From when you first step into the Seven Villa Hotel
& Spa and pick up the pleasing fragrant with hint
of something you can’t easily identify (it’s their very
own signature scent which they diffuse into the
air), to the wonderful Textures restaurant where
you head for Canapés and a Cointreau G&T, to the
Camelot Spa, hidden within the hotels garden, it’s
pure bliss all the way. Talking bliss … the night spa
experience includes a full body massage … an hour
of pampering in a room set for two. A freshen up,
and it’s back to Textures restaurant for a little wining
and dining. The name plays with everything from
the touch of the table and feel of the menu through
to the playfulness on your plate … braised pork
belly with smooth carrot puree, fluffy cauliflower
cous cous and crisp roasted apple. Expect dinner
to be divine - Sous Chef Percy Leso delivers a stellar
job with the food and presentation. The overnight
spa package includes a glass of Arniston Bay wine
with dinner ... a great choice, as we do love a wine
with a story and for every bottle of Arniston Bay
wine sold, a contribution is made to the South
African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal
Birds to assist in their fight towards the conservation
of coastal seabirds, focusing on our endangered
African penguin.
You’re in for a treat after dinner, too.
Accommodation is in a spacious Villa Suite (such a
treat) … all dark accents and modern finishes with
lifestyle artwork hanging from the walls giving off a
sense of livelihood. Pre-order your choice of pillows
of the pillow menu, watch one of the two 65’’ inch
TVs, wallow in the grand luxe bath, have a drink
from the fully stocked bar of spirts on the balcony
overlooking a stream, and if you’re still peckish,
there’s an in-room dining area with butler services.
Breakfast is sweet … we’re talking the waffle stack,
but for those with will power there are options like
health oats. And nothing takes your fancy? A quick
request will see them whipping up something not
on the menu.
And before you leave, make sure you stop to admire
the many sculptures on the grounds, the work of
Anton Smit who uses monumental shapes – raw
and earthy power that feels innately African. This is a
collaboration between the artist and the hotel born
from common values – a passion for excellence and
celebrating South African creativity
It’s all very luxurious and memorable … worth a
staycation indeed. The duluxe night spa overnight
experience package will cost you from R4900 per
couple. For the Villa Suite, R6300 per couple.
Living our best, healthiest lives!
Compiled by: KYM ARGO.
Let’s kick off
with a happy gut
Did you know that nearly 80 percent of
your immune system is housed in your
gut? The gastrointestinal tract hosts
trillions of microorganisms collectively
called the gut microbiome. These help
break down food, produce vitamins and
minerals, and regulate the digestive
system, and play a crucial role in regulating
the immune system. There are easy ways
to keep your gut bacteria happy and
support your immunity this winter:
Dry Brushing. The lymphatic system is
responsible for removing toxins and waste
from the body, including the gut. Dry
brushing stimulates the lymphatic system
by boosting circulation and promoting
lymphatic drainage, helping remove toxins.
Eat fermented foods such as kimchi,
sauerkraut, kombucha, yoghurt and kefir ...
great sources of healthy bacteria.
Get enough prebiotic fibre - think gutfriendly
Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus,
onions and garlic, tomatoes, whole grains
and legumes.
Choose vegetables in a range of different
colours. These contain essential antioxidants
- polyphenols that activate
pathways to help reduce your body’s
inflammatory response. They are also rich
in insoluble fibre that your body can’t
ordinarily break down.
Limit refined carbohydrates and processed,
fried and high-sugar foods. These can lead
to an imbalance of bacteria in the gut.
Exercise. That daily run or walk is essential to
the health of your gut and the rest of your
physical and mental well-being.
We also suggest the Kiko Vitals Heal Your
Gut Duo ... a powerful duo which has a 360
approach to healing and balancing your
gut biome, calming inflammation, repairing
your gut barrier and assisting with IBS, leaky
gut, digestion and bloating. There’s a daily
Prebiotic + Probiotic alongside Debloat
+ Gut Glow, which gives incredible, and
instant bloat relief, alleviates puffiness and
water retention. R818 for the two from
Sustainable paperboard bottles, with unpretentious
labelling and fine wine. A round of applause to
Journey’s End Vineyards and new wine brand Interpunkt,
who teamed up to launch this innovative idea - a first in
South Africa, and one that shows we can enjoy wine while
reducing the impact on the environment. The bottles, made
from 100 per cent recyclable paperboard outers, are five
times lighter than a normal glass bottle, with a lower carbon
footprint. Added to that, Interpunkt also aims to make wine
more engaging, accessible and inclusive, particularly for new
and occasional wine drinkers, by removing the specialist
and intimidating language often used. The South African
Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz are described simply as ‘fresh
and zesty’ and ‘juicy and easy drinking’ respectively. You’ll
find them at Checkers, Checkers Hyper supermarkets, and
Checkers LiquorShop stores for around R119.99.
EMPOWERING CREATIVES
Elsubie Louwrens. From trailer park to top of the entertainment world!
And she’s empowering others to join her.
With a resume that screams success, things weren’t always
easy for young Elsubie Louwrens. She grew up in a trailer park
in East London, with next to nothing. Her father worked a job
in construction and, in the attempt to make ends meet, the
family moved from site to site. She learnt early on that living
in a caravan park was frowned upon, so she spent most of her
time playing with imaginary friends.
But Elsubie had dreams that no one could extinguish, and
she had set her eyes on the City of Gold. And little did she
know that what was waiting for her was far greater and more
precious than she, or anyone, could have imagined.
A true trailblazer, she’s starred in a bevy of national and
international films and commercials, from Leon Schuster’s Mr.
Bones 2, to the Hallmark series Wild at Heart, as well as several
Bollywood films. Then there’s Binnelanders. Egoli. Scandal.
She’s done international runway modelling, choreography,
judging, presenting, and photographic modelling.
Her everyday hustle includes being chairperson and CEO
of 33 and Me Talent Agency, producer of the largest talent
convention in Africa - The International Arts Talent Showcase
(IATS), as well as producer of the reality TV show Dream
Factory, ... and these are just a few of the titles under this force
of nature’s fashionable belt.
That’s now. But then it was a different story. Soon after
relocating to Joburg, Elsubie realised that breaking into the
entertainment industry was extremely hard ... and back then
there wasn’t really anyone to guide young aspiring talent.
So, she developed humility and a burning passion to serve
others. She wanted to give back by giving youngsters the
support she once so desperately needed.
She says: “My hope is to give to others what I never had. It is
my God-given purpose.”
Teaching and uplifting the youth of the nation is the core
focus for this Sandton-based CEO. Her aim ... to empower
the children of today to move from a poverty mindset to a
prosperity mindset.
She says: “My goal is to allow aspiring South African talent
easy access to international education and networking
opportunities. I pride myself in taking the time to know each
and every one I represent and guide them in their career path.”
The determined young lady hopes to bridge the gap
between South Africa and international markets. She
elevates and casts light on untapped talent in South Africa
and ardently fosters and drives them towards international
accolades, yielding an environment to achieve excellence in
the launching of their careers.
An empowerment leader, Elsubie’s ethos is to set the hearts
of the youth on fire for what they are most passionate about
and to equip them with the tools necessary to bring their
dreams to life. Last year, she secured over a million dollars’
worth in scholarships for talent to study in the United States.
Elsubie says: “The youth are our future. My aim is to equip,
inspire and build a powerful nation of creatives. We might be
a third-world country, but we have first-world potential.”
Equipped with 25 plus years in the industry, Elsubie has most
certainly earned her stripes as South Africa’s premiere talent
agent. She is actively involved in the fields of music, film,
fashion, entertainment and media industries. She basically
eats, sleeps and breathes entertainment, but most important
is her desire to identify and then develop talent.
Balancing being a wife and a mother of three, her everyday
life is fast-paced and on the go, but it is also filled with passion
and excitement, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
She concludes: “My passion is to give to others what I never
had and in doing so I am fulfilling my purpose.”
n your marks, get set – enjoy
yourself! That’s Elana Afrika’s
running mantra – which is
why she sees every race is
an opportunity to embrace
that delicious feeling of
being in motion, with the
sun on your shoulders, and
an endorphin boost as a little
added extra.
That’s probably why Elana feels
comfortable no matter which area of the SPAR
Women’s Challenge she’s involved in, whether
it’s as a runner, an MC, a cheerleader for those
trying to beat their PB, or – as she is this year –
an ambassador for the race. “I have the greatest
respect for those who collect medals, but for
me, it’s always been about the fun of running,”
Elana says. She adds that she fell in love with the
sport shortly after the birth of her first daughter,
Esther Beth, when former South African Olympic
medalist Elana Meyer challenged her to try it out.
The SPAR Women’s Challenge means so much
more to her than other events she’s taken part
in, though. “I wouldn’t be able to support an
event that’s all about women upliftment if I didn’t
believe in this cause whole-heartedly – which I do.
My entire life is about women’s empowerment – I
even preach it at home, where I take the time
to empower my daughters with affirmations
every day. I think that’s imperative, because you
can only empower those around you when you
have uplifted yourself.” That’s why her status as
an ambassador for the race means so much to
her ... it’s an endorsement of the work she has
done to establish herself as a strong, resilient and
empowered woman, who is ready to help others
step into their own light.
The race’s affiliation with the Smile Foundation,
an NGO dedicated to helping children with facial
disfigurements like cleft palate, means that it
occupies an even more precious place in her
heart. “I love that people have dedicated their lives
to helping a child smile. I have seen that this is
no easy process: the Smile Foundation’s children
begin their journey with the organisation with a
broken smile; slowly, it heals, and then they can
smile completely. The race is exactly the same: For
those taking part, the start will be difficult, then
they’ll finish, and they’ll be smiling!”
Elana says that the SPAR Women’s Challenge isn’t
just for those who like to get a heart rate going.
“This isn’t about exercise or fitness. It’s a chance to
stand up with other women. We always say that
women should be celebrated throughout the
year and not only during Women’s Month – this
is our opportunity to salute our fellow females,
to uplift each other, and to know that we have
played a role in our own empowerment!”
The Smile Foundation
In May this year, the SPAR Women's Challenge Jozi sponsored four
essential procedures for children at the Nelson Mandela Children's
Hospital in Johannesburg.
The children who received treatment were between 18 months and
eight years old. In all likelihood, these procedures would not have
been able to be done without the backing of the Smile Foundation,
which assists children with facial abnormalities such as cleft lips and
palates. The Smile Foundation ensures that children needing these
procedures receive the necessary medical attention, regardless of
their financial situation.
The partnership between the SPAR Women's Challenge Jozi and the
Smile Foundation aligns with the theme message of #4Smiles, which
aims to create more smiles by assisting those in need. By sponsoring
these procedures, the organisation has helped to bring joy and hope
to the lives of four children and their families. The Nelson Mandela
Children's Hospital is a world-class facility that provides medical
care and treatment to children in South Africa. It was established
in honour of the late Nelson Mandela, who was passionate about
improving the lives of children in his country. Overall, the SPAR
Women's Challenge Jozi has demonstrated its commitment to
improving children's lives in South Africa by partnering with the
Smile Foundation and supporting the critical work done at the
Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital. Through initiatives like #4Smiles,
the organisation is helping to create positive change and make a
meaningful impact in the lives of those in need.
Join in a Day of Smiles!
The SPAR Women's Challenge Jozi 2023 is back and promises to
be another spectacular event. Returning to Marks Park, this year's
challenge aims to capture the essence of the community and
spread smiles all around. With the campaign theme of #4Smiles,
the organisers have chosen a name that perfectly reflects the
event's spirit.
The newly named SPAR Women's Challenge Jozi is set to be a day
filled with excitement, camaraderie, and, of course, plenty of smiles.
As part of the event's charity initiative, the Smile Foundation will be
supported, ensuring that the power of a smile can reach even more
children in need.
Get ready to lace up your running shoes, gather your friends and
family, and embark on a journey that will leave you with a smile and
memories to cherish.
Participants can register online or at selected stores. To stay updated
and find important information about the event, keep an eye on
the official website www.sparwomensjozi.co.za. There, you'll find
all the latest updates, news, and details you need to make your
participation a memorable one.
All the info you need to know
The entry price is R150, which includes a T-shirt, My Jozie Challenge
HAVEN OF
he fact that patients are prepared
to drive from the Free State for their
treatments at the hands of Dr Maricia
Coertze of Lueur House Aesthetics and
Wellness tells your pretty much all you need to
know about this haven of healing.
But, just in case you need a little more
persuasion, a quick glance around should do
the trick. Tucked away in the suburbs, and
set inside a magnificent landscaped garden, everything
about this sanctuary whispers elegance and sophistication.
Which is exactly what the team was striving for when the
centre was opened in 2020, says Dr Maricia. “Our vision was
to create a private environment where people can enjoy
luxe treatments,” she explains – hence Lueur’s initial focus
on premium products like Biologique Recherche, known
for its intensely personal approach to skincare. However, it
wasn’t long before demand from clients encouraged Lueur
to introduce medical aesthetics services, so that the centre
has developed a reputation as an anti-ageing medi-spa.
This is where Dr Maricia comes in. It’s difficult to reconcile
the incredibly glamorous professional – a true ad for her
own treatments – with the Mpumalanga farm girl she once
was, but that’s probably because Dr Maricia is truly invested
in her field of expertise, dedicated to following the latest
research and applying it with an expert touch. “I was always
drawn to healing. When it was time to study, it was a tossup
between medicine and veterinary sciences,” she says.
Thankfully for Lueur’s following, the former won, and after
completing her community studies in Kimberley, Dr Maricia
chose to focus on the aesthetic side of medicine. “It’s a
very positive area,” she explains. “I love seeing how a person
transforms from the inside out when you address what’s
troubling them about their appearance.”
Dr Maricia includes functional medicine in her approach,
so that she considers not only the symptoms that
point to a certain condition, but also the cause. This
enables her to look at ageing from all angles, laying the
foundation for regenerative solutions. “It’s important to
me that my patients feel heard. I want them to know that
we take their concerns seriously, and address them in
a methodical, planned way that they help to co-create.
They need to know that this is a safe space and, no
matter what is worrying them, we will do all we can to
accommodate them.”
Sounds good – but what, exactly, is a medi-spa? Essentially,
it differs from the salons you may pop into for a mani
or pedi (although Lueur offers these, too) by providing
treatments that are prescribed and monitored by a doctorthink
laser treatments, chemical peels, radio frequency,
carboxy therapy and body sculpting and contouring. The
products used here are different, too: These cosmeceuticals
contain active ingredients at a level which means you
wouldn’t be able to purchase them in your local pharmacy.
Every Lueur journey starts with a consult by Dr Maricia,
where patients are invited to discuss the specific and
unique concerns. “At this point, we talk about basics like
when the issue started and the products they’ve used so
far, but I’ll also examine the patient’s stress levels, because
this has a dramatic effect on their health and the condition
itself.” Although each treatment plan is highly individualised,
each one – whether targeting ageing, pigmentation or
acne – begins with restoring the health of the skin barrier,
as this primes the skin and makes it more resilient for more
intense treatments that will take place at a later date. For
instance, if you’re trying to combat the signs of ageing,
Dr Maricia is likely to recommend laser treatments or
chemical peels, and then perhaps a treatment which may
achieve similar results to surgery – without the invasiveness
(although she doesn’t hesitate to recommend surgery
where this is the best option).
“This is an incredibly exciting industry, with new
developments taking place all the time. To give you an idea,
the industry grows 28 per cent year on year,” Dr Maricia says.
“The tools we have today are vastly different to those we
worked with just give years ago – we now have access to
new machines and techniques that reduce downtime and
achieve outstanding results.” She adds that Lueur strives to
be at the forefront of this innovation, bringing clients the
latest industry offerings so that they can enjoy the very best
outcomes within the shortest time.
But it’s not just this that sets Lueur apart. “From the
moment a client walks in until the very end of their
procedure, we keep in mind that they’re not just here for
a treatment. This is a journey, and we want to walk with
them every step of the way.”
DR MARICIA’S TOP TIPS FOR ANTI-AGEING
• Stress is enormously ageing, so try to reduce your
stress levels. Make time for rest and relaxation and get
enough sleep.
• Your skin’s collagen-producing cells, fibroblasts, get lazy
after the age of 25 – so the sooner you start treatments like
Botox, the better your results will be.
• Include active ingredients in your beauty regime from
the age of 25, too. Retinol and hyaluronic acid are the gold
standard, and make sure to use an antioxidant serum, too.
WINTER GLOW
Skin hacks to keep your skin gorgeous all season
Winter doesn’t have to be a time of skin woes. By
following these three natural winter skin hacks,
shared with us by Eco Diva natural founder Nicole
Sherwin, you can maintain a gorgeous glow all
season long. Hydrate and moisturise. Exfoliate.
And nourish your skin from within.
Hydration heroes ... drink up and moisturise
The key to combating winter skin is hydration.
Start from within by drinking plenty of filtered or
spring water throughout the day. You can also sip
on some hearty warm herbal teas. Herbal teas like
chamomile, green tea, and peppermint are not
only soothing but also packed with antioxidants
that help combat inflammation and protect your
skin from environmental stressors. Additionally,
invest in a rich, nourishing moisturiser that
suits your skin type and balances your skin
microbiome. Look for ingredients like superfoods,
hyaluronic acid, shea butter, vitamin C and
squalene to lock in moisture and protect your
skin’s barrier. Apply the moisturiser twice daily.
Pamper your body as well, as skin is one organ,
so the whole organ needs care. A luxurious body
butter or vitamin-rich body oil or scrub will keep
your skin supple and smooth from head to toe.
Exfoliation elixir ... buff away dryness Exfoliation
is a game-changer when it comes to achieving a
healthy winter glow. Gentle exfoliation removes
dead skin cells, allowing your moisturisers and
serums to penetrate more effectively. Opt for
a mild exfoliating scrub that won’t irritate your
skin. Go for natural and go for simple. Apply
and exfoliate once or twice a week to avoid
over-exfoliation, which can lead to irritation.
Remember to be gentle and let the exfoliator do
the work - no need for harsh scrubbing! Your skin
will thank you with a renewed radiance.
Nourish from within What you eat has a direct
impact on your skin’s health. During winter, load
up on foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and
healthy fats. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables,
nuts, and seeds in your diet to provide essential
nutrients for your skin. Foods like avocados,
walnuts, berries, and spinach are particularly
beneficial. Consider adding a daily supplement
of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help combat
dryness and inflammation. Also include
superfoods like baobab, maca, hemp seeds and
spirulina, which also offer wonders in hydrating
skin from the inside out. Remember, a nourished
gut and body equals healthy, vibrant, glowing
skin. Something we all need.
Fitness goals
& inspiration
Rewards. Workout buddies.
Challenges. And a book to inspire.
REINVIGORATING YOUR 2023 FITNESS GOALS
Dark, cold, frosty mornings. It’s jolly easy to let our fitness goals fall by the
wayside during the Winter months. So much easier to stay in bed a little
later, or catch up on your favourite series after work. However, exercising will
have us not only looking good, but feeling good mentally too.
Themba Ndlovu, brand manager for Clere For Men, shared some of his tips
to get back on track.
Set specific goals The first step is to set specific, measurable, and
achievable goals. Instead of saying you want to ‘get fit,’ set a specific goal like
‘run a 5km in under 30 minutes’ or ‘do 10 pull-ups.’ This will help you track
your progress and give you something specific to work towards.
Find a workout buddy Having a workout buddy can make a huge
difference in your motivation and accountability. Find someone who
shares your fitness goals and can help keep you on track. You can work
out together, share progress updates, and motivate each other when
things get tough.
Switch up your routine Doing the same workout day in and day out can
get boring and lead to a lack of motivation. Try mixing up your routine by
adding new exercises, trying a spinning class, or doing a different form of
exercise altogether. This can help keep things fresh and exciting. If you’re
running, change the route to keep things fresh.
Try a challenge Setting a fitness challenge for yourself can be a great
way to reinvigorate your fitness goals. Try something like a 30-day plank
challenge, a 100-pushup challenge, or a 10000-step challenge. It helps you
stay motivated and gives a sense of accomplishment.
Get proper sleep Sleep is crucial for maintaining good health and
achieving fitness goals. Lack of sleep can lead to fatigue, decreased
motivation, and poor performance during workouts. Aim for seven to eight
hours of sleep each night to ensure your body has the rest it needs to
function properly.
Reward yourself You’ve worked hard. You deserve a reward. Set up a reward
system for yourself when you hit certain fitness milestones. Treat yourself to
a delicious meal, new workout gear, or a night out with friends. This can help
you stay motivated and give you something to look forward to.
Look after your skin Taking care of your skin is important for several
reasons. Healthy skin can help boost your self-confidence and make you
feel good about yourself, it helps prevent skin damage and premature
ageing. If you’re out running early morning or evening, that chill can
damage your skin. Moisturising your skin regularly can help prevent
dryness, flakiness, and wrinkles. Clere For Men’s Gly-Co-Jelly Ice combines
glycerine and petroleum jelly, giving a whopping 48 hours of moisture,
exactly what you need to combat Winter dryness.
In Onwards, Karen Dudley weaves a
compelling narrative of how her life
changed after the Covid-19 pandemic
forced her to close her iconic
restaurant, The Kitchen. From these
bleak circumstances arose something
beautiful, offering the time and
space for inspiration to take root, to
rediscover her connection with food,
and to shift her perception of what
it means to cook, for oneself and for
others. Full of wholesome, nourishing
and indulgent recipes, with a story
of hope and happiness threaded
throughout, it’s full of deliciousness
... from easy (smashed roasted
potatoes with a few suggestions, and
tomato toast) to dinner party dishes
(tamarind salmon with orange, chilli
and coriander). Loads of lovely little
recipes to dicky up your dishes to
restaurant style. Penguin
From an early age Mmule Setati
was aware of her tribe – her parents,
grandparents and siblings. And as
time passed her tribe grew to include
friends and extended family ... those
she loved, was intensely proud of
and wanted to nurture. Inspired and
guided by her maternal grandmother,
Mmule developed a passion for food
and used it as the clearest way to
demonstrate the love she felt for her
tribe. This set a pattern for her life
and now as a wife, mother and rising
social media tour de force, her tribe is
impressive. And she still expresses her
love via her kitchen, the meals that
emerge from it, and her cookbook,
YOUR INNER CHEF
Fans of The Great British Bake Off will remember the popular Giuseppe
Dell’Anno, who won over hearts (and the 2021competition) with his
lovely sense of humour, and great baking. Both of which come through in
Giuseppe’s Italian Bakes, where he shares his skill, knowledge and love of
baking through over 60 new sweet and savoury recipes. It’s not for the fainthearted.
These aren’t whip-them-up in a minute treats ... some, like his Rum
Baba, run to four pages (five if you count the full page pic to tempt you). That
said, he writes clearly and concisely ... so they’re easy to follow. Mostly sweet
- like the gorgeous Brutti ma Buoni (literally translated as ugly but good)
biscuits, some savoury (like the delish Focaccia Genovese - which makes two
so great for a drinks or dinner party). Even his ‘basics’ chapter is clearly more
his idea of basic than ours - think Zabaione! Hardie Grant / Quadrille
A delicious dish
for dinner à deux
This month we’re loving the Steenberg Nebbiolo from the standout 2017
vintage, which is especially delicious. The ruby red wine is all notes of strawberry,
dried cranberry and cherry juxtaposed with the earthiness of truffles and
mountain fynbos. It’s well-rounded, full, smooth and according to Steenberg
Cellarmaster Elunda Basson, it’s best enjoyed in typical Italian fashion with
artisanal charcuterie, parmigiana and risotto, as well as spicy Asian food.
R285 from steenbergfarm.com/buy-wine-online/.
Mushroom, pancetta and
truffle oil risotto
Try this delicious, rich risotto,
developed by Steenberg Executive
Chef Kerry Kilpin. Serves 2
You’ll need:
1 onion, chopped
50g butter
2 cloves garlic, chopped
150g pancetta, cubed
200g risotto rice
200ml dry white wine
250g assorted mushrooms, sliced
500ml vegetable or chicken stock
2 sprigs rosemary, chopped
125g parmesan, grated
50g butter
20g parsley, chopped
10 – 15ml truffle oil (or to your taste)
To make:
Sweat your onions and garlic with the
butter in a pot for about two minutes.
Add the cubed pancetta and cook
for a minute. Add your rice, cook for a
further minute until the rice starts to go
translucent on the outsides. Add the
sliced mushrooms.
Add the wine and allow the wine
to cook off and rice to absorb all
the liquid.
Add enough stock to cover the rice.
Cook on a medium heat.
After a further two minutes, add the
rosemary and top up with stock.
Throughout the cooking process
you will add stock and stir from time
to time.
You need to keep your risotto moist at
all times.
If you run out of stock and your rice
isn’t cooked, top up using water.
Once your rice is about two minutes off
from being cooked, add the parmesan,
butter, truffle oil and parsley and allow
to melt and season to taste.
Serve with a glass of Steenberg Nebbiolo.
Herb of the month
Evening Primrose (Oenethera
Biennis) is more than just a beautiful
garden herb that opens its flowers as
evening approaches, spilling out its
light perfume.
The bright yellow flowers play a very
important role in attracting beneficial
insects that prey on pests and are
a magnet for pollinating bees and
butterflies.
Every part of this plant can be used.
The leaves can be cooked and eaten
as greens. The flowers are sweet and
can be used in salads or as a pretty
garnish. Roast the ripe seeds in an
oven and use on bread or sprinkle
over salads. As with all edible flowers,
use sparingly until you know how
they affect you, especially if you have
plant allergies. Evening primroses
grow best in full sun but will tolerate
partial shade. Sow between spring
and autumn. They can grow in poor
soil as long as it drains well. The
flower spikes/inflorescences are
produced in the second year and
reach up to 1m so it’s a good idea to
position them towards the middle
or back of a bed. Plants will survive
long periods of drought but will
grow and flower better with regular
watering. Although they die down in
winter, cutting down the plant to the
ground will stimulate new growth in
spring. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
There’s something luxurious, and very touchable about the velvety flowers and
leaves of Gloxinia. Despite its exotic looks, Gloxinia is an easy to grow houseplant
that likes a warm, bright position and only lightly moist soil. Like indoor violets,
Gloxinia don’t like wet leaves. An easy way to water them and keep the leaves dry is
to put the pot in a bowl with shallow water. Allow to plant to soak up the water for
about 15 minutes, then take it out and allow the pot to drain. Feed once a month
with a liquid fertiliser diluted at half-strength. Details: lvgplant.co.za
Garden tasks for August
• August is a windy month. Check the
ties of standard roses and all other
standard plants that are supported by
stakes and stake newly planted trees.
• Prepare the soil for spring planting
by digging in compost and other
organic material. • Start sowing spring
vegetables in seed trays and keep them
in a warm, sheltered corner. • Increase
watering to once a week for most plants
and fertilise all plants. • Give the lawn
its spring treatment. Rake out all the
dead grass and then cut the lawn with
the lawnmower on its lowest setting.
Compacted ground can be spiked with
a garden fork or a hollow tine fork.
Apply lawn fertiliser and water in well.
• If the lawn has hollows, is uneven or
there are dead patches, level it with
lawn dressing. Fertilise and water well. •
Do some garden maintenance - remove
leaves from gutters and fix any
broken ones, clean the
garden furniture and
treat any wooden
garden furniture.
We’re planting… Impatiens Beacon ‘Lipstick’ which is a new colour in the
highly disease resistant Beacon range of bedding impatiens. It is a vivid
vermillion, just what we need to usher in spring. The Beacon Impatiens is
a fast-filling bedding impatiens for light shade or semi-shade. It flowers
non-stop from spring through to autumn and nothing else quite
matches it for colour and impact in the garden, as a border or massed.
Plant in fertile soil, spaced 15 to 20cm apart and feed with a liquid
fertiliser after planting and once a month thereafter for good flowers.
Impatiens like consistently moist but not soggy soil. The more sunshine
the plants get, the more water they need, with less in shadier areas. Details:
Bon appetit!
Come hungry – when eating out in Steyn City!
Once upon a time, Joburg’s dining hot spots were set in stone. One
locale was where the serious foodies hung out, while another spot
was the go-to if you wanted a bit more of a vibe. But now there’s an
exciting newcomer to the cuisine scene ... giving Joburgers in the
‘New North’ a fantastic range of options - all in one secure setting.
Welcome to Steyn City!
There are so many reasons to visit this award-winning residential
development, especially if you’re hungry. Take Nineteen Restaurant
for example. This was the luxury residential estate’s very first dining
option, and is the perfect setting to appreciate the magnificent
backdrop of Steyn City’s famed Nicklaus design championship
golf course. Whether you’re toasting with a sundowner or enjoying
the menu of classic bistro favourites, there are few views in
Johannesburg that surpass this one.
Then there’s The Farmhouse, a must if you’re looking for the perfect
spot for outdoor family dining. While it’s ideal for long, lazy brunches
(thanks to the outdoor play areas keeping the children busy), it’s
also the perfect location for book club lunches by the fireplace or
celebratory occasions – any mom-to-be would be happy to be feted
here, and perfect for a husband celebrating his big birthday. What’s
to eat? A wide range of breakfast and lunch dishes, all prepared with
an emphasis on freshness – think hearty and wholesome.
The latest addition to Steyn City is a name that needs no
introduction. Café del Sol. Having recently opened its doors on the
piazza at the development’s innovative flagship apartment address,
City Centre, this landmark restaurant has already garnered its fair
share of fans who are familiar with the authentic, Italian-inspired
dishes prepared with love and served with flair at their two other
locations. This is al fresco dining at its best ... choose from pasta and
other Italian dishes just like nona would make, or go for a Neapolitan
pizza straight out the pizza oven.
WHERE NATURE COMES FIRST

FOCUS ON ESTATE LIVING
COASTAL BLISS
Located on a unique stretch of coast, Seaton offers beach access and a sustainable lifestyle.
When it comes to estate living, the North Coast has really
exploded. Seaton Estate, which was developed by Collins
Residential, is one of the area’s most sought-after options.
And, with over a kilometre of direct beach access and a
range of lifestyle facilities, it’s easy to see why.
In developing the estate, great care has been taken in
rehabilitating the grasslands and forests to their former
glory from more than100 years ago. As such, Seaton is a
shining example of sustainable living, with a rehabilitation
programme that includes planting over 10,000 trees and
offering eco-friendly options for power and water.
The philosophy embraced in this developing community
permeates through the design guidelines, promoting
an eco-conscious mindset among all residents and
encouraging them to minimise their environmental impact.
The homes seamlessly integrate rehabilitated grasslands
with lush coastal forests, massive valleys of green areas, and
26km of running and cycling trails. Seaton also features a
world-class equestrian facility and a superb multi-sports
facility known as Seaton Country Club. Residents will have
access to the spectacular residents-only Seaton Beach
Club situated in close proximity to Christmas Bay.
One of the most impressive features of Seaton Estate is
the magnificently designed Gatehouse, which cleverly
balances people’s needs, design aesthetics and the
exquisite natural topography of the area. It’s a masterful
blend of contemporary design and natural beauty,
showcasing the estate’s commitment to sustainable living
and environmental conservation.
Seaton also enjoys reciprocity and access to additional
facilities in the neighbouring and more established
Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate. This means that residents
of Seaton will have access to a variety of additional lifestyle
facilities, including three clubhouses, a fitness centre, and a
restaurant in the Wetlands Clubhouse.
According to Murray Collins, founder of Collins Residential,
“Seaton Estate is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for
those who appreciate natural beauty, sustainable living
and a world-class lifestyle. We are committed to creating
an estate that is both environmentally conscious and
luxurious, and we invite you to come and see for yourself”.
The KZN North Coast is experiencing a notable influx of
around 45 families per month, and it comes as no surprise
given the excellent schools, top-notch amenities, and
convenient proximity to the airport. Seaton, situated along
an unrivalled 1km stretch of untouched coastline, boasts a
rarity that few other locations in the country can match.
GROOTBOS PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE
to your travel bucket list
The 4x4 Botanical Tour. And the honey served at
breakfast. “Walking through the Fynbos is one of
the most magical experiences you will ever have
in your life,” says Jo de Villiers, one of the reserve’s
expert guides. And she’s right. The area boasts
the richest temperate flora in the world ... more
than 900 plant species has been recorded on the
3500 hectares of wilderness. You’ll learn all sorts
of fascinating information ... like how a sunbird’s
beak fits perfectly into a flower, and why the honey
their bees produce is completely unique - and so
special it’s only served at their own restaurant. So
add on the Hive to Home excursion ... suit up, visit
the active beehives, and learn the important role
bees play in our environment and how delicate
their ecosystem is. We did a brilliant hike ... fynbos
for days, and exceptional bird watching, with more
than 100 different bird species to look out for.
There are more gentle walks, as well as horseback
riding through the fynbos or on the beach, and
fatbike tours over vast sand dunes and along the
stunning Walker Bay coastline. Those with sea legs
3
can experience marine safaris, whale watching in
season, and ... oh ... shark cage diving - which we
didn’t, and quite possibly never will - experience!
We fall for the more hedonistic treats ... so a cruise
down the Klein River on the Lady Stanford exclusive
luxury boat appealed, as did a spa beauty treatment
in the Milkwood forest, which promises to leave you
calmer, stronger and more centred.
The view from the window at the foot of the bed in our Forest
Lodge suite. Waking up to 180 degree views of the fynbos and
the ocean is quite magical. The most romantic of the Grootbos
Private Nature Reserve accommodation options, you stroll
along walkways through the ancient Milkwood forest to the
Forest Lodge suites, where fireplaces are warm and the luxury
is uncompromising. Like the other lodge, there’s a restaurant,
lounge, barista bar and boma, along with a beauty spa and
library, and, when the weather plays nice, a swimming pool
... in this instance an infinity pool with ocean views. All jolly
swoonworthy. For those travelling with children, The Garden
Lodge, with the same unbeatable views, is more family friendly
... so alongside the tranquil wellness area, restaurant and elegant
wine cellar, the lodge has a heated swimming pool, a forestthemed
playroom and exciting kids programmes. And if you’re
after total seclusion and exclusivity there are two private villas -
the Fynbos Villa and the Sunbird Villa ... with your own swimming
pool, office, cinema room, wine cellar and fully equipped gym,
along with a private chef, butler and nature guide to see to your
every need. There’s even a small private landing strip for those
planning on arriving in a heli or small plane.
The Florilegium (n: a collection of illustrations
featuring plants from a specific garden or region)
collection of artwork at The Hannerie Wenhold
Botanical Art Centre. For lovers of botanicals and
art, this is a massive highlight. It’s a collection
of 124 original botanical illustrations by a
collaboration of more than 40 highly acclaimed
and celebrated mostly local but some international
artists, showing off the rare, endangered and
charismatic plants found on the Grootbos Private
Nature Reserve and surrounding regions.
4The simple, but perfect, crispy
calamari side dish. Really? A reason
to visit? Absolutely. When they
make a simple side dish this well,
imagine what they do with the rest
of the menu. You can posh it up, and
order the Pernod pan-fried calamari
with roasted romano tomatoes
and spinach linguini. Or the cured
rainbow trout poke bowl. Or indulge
in the tasting menu, which is five
courses of pure pleasure, paired with
equally pleasurable wines. Under
the guidance of brilliant Executive
Head Chef Benjamin Conradie, every
plate dished up is a work of art.
There are plentiful vegetarian and
vegan options, the organic veggies
and herbs are grown on their own
farm, all ingredients are responsibly
sourced, and there’s an impressive
wine collection to back up the food
menu ... bar a few bottles of imported
sparkling wines and champagnes
from France, they generally support
local and stock a sensational
collection of Cape wines.
The fact that Grootbos is so much more than just another luxury lodge in a
glorious surroundings. While the team know how to turn on the luxury and
provide an exceptional holiday experience, they are, they justifiably boast,
about much more than luxury travel. The entire Grootbos experience has
been built around a new movement they call Progressive Tourism. It’s all about
changing the world’s approach to tourism, and showing how ‘every action
we take has a positive impact’. So what, exactly, is progressive tourism? It’s a
term coined to explain a new way of living that is at the heart of Grootbos ...
it’s about every action they take benefitting someone else or having a positive
impact on the environment. So those fresh tomatoes you eat at lunch, the
recycled candles in your bedroom, the earrings you buy at the gift shop –
they’re all from Grootbos’ initiative to create sustainable livelihoods for the
people who call this unique area home.
The Grootbos Foundation, which was established twenty years ago, is a
non-profit company, which focuses on the upliftment of the surrounding
communities. They tell how they constantly research, innovate and pioneer
new ways of doing things ... and it’s more than just talk. More than 4500
community members benefit each year from the foundation, through
ecotourism, enterprise development, sports development and education.
They also have the objective of conserving, rehabilitating and protecting the
natural environment of the Western Cape region, particularly the magnificent
flora and fauna on Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and the Walker Bay region,
where there are 946 plant species, 195 bird species, 41 mammals and 22
amphibians – some of which are under threat of extinction.
Staying here, and seeing how well it works, is a celebration of ecotourism at
its best ... and you don’t need to take our word for it ... they have numerous
awards to prove they are world leaders in sustainable tourism.
Details: Rates are from R5950 a person a night during the Secret Season special, which is offered to South African residents only.
Otherwise from R13 650 a night, which includes meals and many of the excursions. For more infoand details, visit grootbos.com
For exclusivity ... there are
offer complete seclusion.
