Living our best, healthiest lives!
Compiled by: KYM ARGO.
Let’s kick off
with a happy gut
Did you know that nearly 80 percent of
your immune system is housed in your
gut? The gastrointestinal tract hosts
trillions of microorganisms collectively
called the gut microbiome. These help
break down food, produce vitamins and
minerals, and regulate the digestive
system, and play a crucial role in regulating
the immune system. There are easy ways
to keep your gut bacteria happy and
support your immunity this winter:
Dry Brushing. The lymphatic system is
responsible for removing toxins and waste
from the body, including the gut. Dry
brushing stimulates the lymphatic system
by boosting circulation and promoting
lymphatic drainage, helping remove toxins.
Eat fermented foods such as kimchi,
sauerkraut, kombucha, yoghurt and kefir ...
great sources of healthy bacteria.
Get enough prebiotic fibre - think gutfriendly
Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus,
onions and garlic, tomatoes, whole grains
and legumes.
Choose vegetables in a range of different
colours. These contain essential antioxidants
- polyphenols that activate
pathways to help reduce your body’s
inflammatory response. They are also rich
in insoluble fibre that your body can’t
ordinarily break down.
Limit refined carbohydrates and processed,
fried and high-sugar foods. These can lead
to an imbalance of bacteria in the gut.
Exercise. That daily run or walk is essential to
the health of your gut and the rest of your
physical and mental well-being.
We also suggest the Kiko Vitals Heal Your
Gut Duo ... a powerful duo which has a 360
approach to healing and balancing your
gut biome, calming inflammation, repairing
your gut barrier and assisting with IBS, leaky
gut, digestion and bloating. There’s a daily
Prebiotic + Probiotic alongside Debloat
+ Gut Glow, which gives incredible, and
instant bloat relief, alleviates puffiness and
water retention. R818 for the two from
Sustainable paperboard bottles, with unpretentious
labelling and fine wine. A round of applause to
Journey’s End Vineyards and new wine brand Interpunkt,
who teamed up to launch this innovative idea - a first in
South Africa, and one that shows we can enjoy wine while
reducing the impact on the environment. The bottles, made
from 100 per cent recyclable paperboard outers, are five
times lighter than a normal glass bottle, with a lower carbon
footprint. Added to that, Interpunkt also aims to make wine
more engaging, accessible and inclusive, particularly for new
and occasional wine drinkers, by removing the specialist
and intimidating language often used. The South African
Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz are described simply as ‘fresh
and zesty’ and ‘juicy and easy drinking’ respectively. You’ll
find them at Checkers, Checkers Hyper supermarkets, and
Checkers LiquorShop stores for around R119.99.
THE
REAL
DEAL
Every night from Monday to
Thursday, a voice as smooth as
silk graces the airwaves across the
nation. Her warm and welcoming
tone brings a feel-good vibe to
every show. But, there’s more to
her than meets the ear. We chat
with the daring and
dynamic Danny Painter to find
out what makes her tick.
She is most known as the host of Jacaranda FM’s Love Songs with
Danny Painter, but she also works as a TV presenter, singer and
songwriter, content creator, motivational speaker, business owner, MC,
and voice actress for just about anything you can think of. But when it
comes down to it, Danny Painter says, she’s human.
“I also have anxiety, crippling phobias and (believe it or not) severe
stage fright. At the same time, I’m a very together, A-type person with
insomnia … who sometimes leaves clothes on the floor and sleeps for
two days straight.”
The best word to describe her? Authentic! If you take so much as a
quick scroll through her Insta feed, you’ll know exactly what we mean.
Honest. Real. And unapologetic. In the same way she believes all
women should be able to express themselves.
From a growing collection of (strangely unique) tattoos and an all-black
wardrobe – because it makes her feel sexy and confident – to rocking
the bald look and eloping with her now-hubby Phillip after only
knowing him for four months, Danny Painter is determined to live her
best life. All while staying true to herself.
“I believe a woman is not defined by her hair, her age, her body, or any
of the physical things. I believe a woman’s heart and energy says more
about her than anything else. The inherent feminine energy, the divine.”
And so one of the things that make Danny… well, Danny are her
tattoos. All 30-something of them. Her fave tatt? Danny laughs. “That’s
so difficult to say! I have a portrait of David Bowie as Jareth, the Goblin
King, from my favourite movie Labyrinth. But I also really love the
vampire skull on my ribs. Oh, and don’t forget my movie sleeve! Ok,
12 Get It Magazine August 23

let’s just say I will most probably always love the newest tattoo the
most!” Although she admits to spending way too much on ink, it’ll
be hard for Danny to give up this monthly spoil, simply because it
makes her happy.
“My life motto is that money flows. Money will come and go, but it is
always flowing, and it will flow back. Don’t hold it too tightly.”
Another feature that sets this media darling apart is her everchanging
hair. Danny has never been afraid to experiment. From
chopping it all off to trying new styles, colours, and treatments, she’s
put her hair through it all.
“I have really awful, thin, mousey hair and so I shaved it for the first
time when I was in high school. Since then, I have been bald every so
often – which I actually prefer. Being bald is incredibly empowering
for me and I never feel sexier!
“I also colour it often because I genuinely get bored with my hair
and I simply can’t stand my natural colour. So, the weirder my hair,
the more confident I feel. Although, I am bald again, and I think it will
stay this way for some time to come.”
And don’t think she skimps on appearance just because she works as
a voice actor! In fact, Danny’s always been passionate about skincare
and cosmetics owing to her mother, who instilled in her from an
early age the value of always looking good — you know, in case you
run into someone you don’t like. From botox and fillers to serums
and gua sha, Danny does it all!
She admits that one of her better decisions was to study cosmetics
as an aspiring host so she wouldn’t have to hire makeup artists for
shoots. A true artist at heart – her body the canvas – Danny can
spend between 15 minutes up to an hour each morning on her
skincare and makeup regimen alone.
So, who is Danny when she’s at home and not wearing any makeup?
“Definitely more opinionated, louder and more fun than I appear.
I have a very close circle of friends and I’m way too close with my
family. Those spaces allow me the opportunity to really be me, say
things that I can’t necessarily say in public, and maybe misbehave a
little.
“I think my people would say that I am always up for an adventure
and there will always be shots. My mother says I’m loud. My nephew
says I’m a party and my husband says I’m more reserved. So, I don’t
know who’s lying, haha.”
When she’s not making her mark in the media industry, Danny can
most probably be found in front of the piano, cooking, reading,
gardening or playing with her rescue doggos - Ziggy, Flea, Durby,
Roxy and Chaser.
Although she has to juggle a lot of balls with a crazy daily to-do
list, Danny will always make room for some well-deserved me-time
through meditation, weight lifting and therapy. Adding that “I live a
really full and privileged life. So, I don’t really have to unwind as such.
I just maybe need a little more work/play balance.”
For Danny, a fulfilled life boils down to showing compassion for
others. An empath at her core, she can’t imagine a life that’s not
centred around love, human connection and kindness.
“Just be kind. Be kind to every single person you meet. You have no
idea how much a smile, a kind gesture or a kind word can change
the course of someone’s day!
“Oh, and never apologise for what you want – especially if you’re a
woman in a male-dominated industry. Always be truly, authentically
you and never think you’re unworthy of your heart’s desires!”
Danny’s Top 5 ultimate
hair care tips:
If you like experimenting with your hair like
Danny and want to keep it looking healthy in
the process, she suggests the following hacks.
Remember, she adds, it’s just hair and it will
always grow back
1Don’t wash your hair daily. Washing
your hair on a daily basis has a massive
impact on the health of your hair. “Dry
shampoo is your best friend,” she shares.
“I’m a once or twice a week girl and
it has done wonders for my hair! The analogy
Jonathan Van Ness from the reality series ‘Queer
Eye’ has always shared has stuck with me. He says
‘If you washed your favourite shirt every day, it
would end up tattered and worn, don’t do that
with 2your hair’”.
Rosemary water – a viral hack that
works. After discovering this trend on
social media, Danny admits that using
rosemary water has had an incredible
impact on her hair. “I know, this trick has
no peer reviews, no papers written about it, but
after seeing this on TikTok, I tried it and it works!”
Danny said. “My hair is fuller and healthier than
it’s been in ages! Oh, and it’s easy to make! All
you need is a bunch of fresh Rosemary in water,
boil for around an hour, decant into spray
bottles and spray on your scalp after every wash
3before styling!”
Use heat protection. From blow drying
to straightening, heat is often used
to style hair – and it can leave a nasty
effect. A heat protectant adds moisture
to your hair and forms a protective
barrier which reduces moisture loss caused by
the heat, preventing hair breakage and damage.
“I highly recommend the use of heat protection.
4It works. Don’t leave this step out!” she continues.
The products you use matters. When
using product in your hair, make sure
to do some research on the effect
this could have on your hair. “I learned
this from my time using KMS,” Danny
explains. “They taught me so much about
layering product to get the best results and I
was blown away. Research your hair type and
learn how to use the amazing products we have
5available to make it the lane of your dreams.”
wning and managing two successful
practices in Pretoria’s Rooihuiskraal
and Eldoraigne, Tiaan Massyn is your
go-to eye care specialist by day, and an
aspiring singer-songwriter by night. While
his passions might fall on opposite sides
of the spectrum, it may very well be his love
for people that connect the two.
“I really enjoy the relationships I am able to build with my
patients in my practice. It is so fulfilling to see how I can
improve someone’s quality of life by providing them with
the best vision possible. Music, on the other hand, just
brings people together in such a beautiful way.”
Although he enjoys his day job, testing up to 16 pairs
of eyes per day can be a challenging feat. But lucky for
this optom, the pleasures of song writing and music
making easily balance the stresses of everyday life. Let’s
just say there’s nothing a glass of wine and a good
music sesh can’t fix!
Tiaan has always known that he wants to work in
optometry. But the desire to pursue a career in music only
came more recently. A newbie in the industry, he admits
that “I am completely out of my comfort zone, but am
determined to broaden my horizons”.
And so, with some guidance and determination, Tiaan
released his debut single, ‘Die son kom op’ (The sun rises)
earlier this year. The tune, which he co-wrote with his
brother-in-law, Ernes Smith, is certain to send chills down
your spine!
“It is a song of hope to help carry someone through
a difficult situation. A song to motivate and
encourage listeners not to give up. To always believe
there’s something good and that the sun will rise
again tomorrow.”
As if that’s not enough, and living by the words “the
magic of life happens on the other side of fear”, Tiaan
decided to enter Mr South Africa 2023. He’s been thinking
about it for some years, but only now feels that he is in a
place where he can fulfil the role with passion and zeal.
“I believe it to be an incredible platform where I will be
able to make a big difference and carry out the charity
projects I have been working on over the past few years,
but on a much larger scale.”
As for his musical endeavours, Tiaan is thrilled to reveal
that his next single is in the works. As with his debut song,
he hopes this alternative pop single will unite listeners
and spread a message of hope.
“I would love to become a renowned name in the music
industry and just be able to make music as much as
possible. We are here for a good time, not a long time. We
should make the most of it!”
One thing is certain. It’s never too late to chase your
dreams! And, with a clear vision, you can achieve anything
you set your mind to.
Tiaan gives us a quick peek into the life of a singing optom.
Details: Follow @Tiaan Massyn Musiek on Facebook, @tiaan_
massyn on Insta and @tiaanmassyn on TikTok
I would love to become a renowned
name in the music industry and just be
able to make music as much as possible.
We are here for a good time, not a long
time. We should make the most of it!
What is it about optometry that intrigues you?
The eyes are one of the most amazing sensory organs and it
just absolutely fascinates me. Good vision is also one of the
most precious gifts one can have and sadly something not
everyone is fortunate enough to experience.
What’s your fave part about being an optom?
I can’t imagine a life without seeing and experiencing
the beauty of it. In my opinion, optometrists play one of
the most important roles when it comes to quality of life.
Everyone should have optimal vision, and I truly enjoy giving
it to my patients.
Three qualities any good optom should have?
First and foremost, they have to be passionate about what
they do. Secondly, they have to have patience. An optom
sees a lot of patients every day and each of them requires
an individualised approach and treatment plan. And lastly,
perseverance. No matter what difficulties an optometrist
might face, they should always strive to deliver a good service
for their patients.
What sparked your decision to take up singing?
I actually started taking singing lessons during the Covid
lockdown. I think it was a time when all of us did a lot of selfreflecting.
We had so much time on our hands to think about
the chances we did not take in life and the regret we would
have to face one day when we’re looking back at our lives. I
decided to take action and chase my dreams.
What inspires you when it comes to music?
In a nutshell – nature, people and personal experiences. And,
as most artists know – if you want to make good music, just
have your heart broken.
Anyone you look up to in the industry?
Herman Kleinhans. I absolutely love his music and the way he
writes. He is also such a nice and down-to-earth person.
How do you spend your free time?
I grab my guitar and a glass of wine and just play my heart out.
I am also a bit of a fitness junky, so when I’m not testing eyes
or singing, you’ll probably find me in the gym.
5 Tips for digital eyestrain
• Get yourself a good pair of prescription blue blocker lenses.
• Take frequent breaks (don’t take a break and be on your
phone, relax your eyes and focus on a distant object). • Make
sure there is adequate light in the room. Don’t sit with a very
bright cellphone or computer screen in a dark room. • Get
yourself eye drops to help prevent dry eyes due to staring
at a screen. • Use the night function available with the most
recent digital technology.
WINTER GLOW
Skin hacks to keep your skin gorgeous all season
Winter doesn’t have to be a time of skin woes. By
following these three natural winter skin hacks,
shared with us by Eco Diva natural founder Nicole
Sherwin, you can maintain a gorgeous glow all
season long. Hydrate and moisturise. Exfoliate.
And nourish your skin from within.
Hydration heroes ... drink up and moisturise
The key to combating winter skin is hydration.
Start from within by drinking plenty of filtered or
spring water throughout the day. You can also sip
on some hearty warm herbal teas. Herbal teas like
chamomile, green tea, and peppermint are not
only soothing but also packed with antioxidants
that help combat inflammation and protect your
skin from environmental stressors. Additionally,
invest in a rich, nourishing moisturiser that
suits your skin type and balances your skin
microbiome. Look for ingredients like superfoods,
hyaluronic acid, shea butter, vitamin C and
squalene to lock in moisture and protect your
skin’s barrier. Apply the moisturiser twice daily.
Pamper your body as well, as skin is one organ,
so the whole organ needs care. A luxurious body
butter or vitamin-rich body oil or scrub will keep
your skin supple and smooth from head to toe.
Exfoliation elixir ... buff away dryness Exfoliation
is a game-changer when it comes to achieving a
healthy winter glow. Gentle exfoliation removes
dead skin cells, allowing your moisturisers and
serums to penetrate more effectively. Opt for
a mild exfoliating scrub that won’t irritate your
skin. Go for natural and go for simple. Apply
and exfoliate once or twice a week to avoid
over-exfoliation, which can lead to irritation.
Remember to be gentle and let the exfoliator do
the work - no need for harsh scrubbing! Your skin
will thank you with a renewed radiance.
Nourish from within What you eat has a direct
impact on your skin’s health. During winter, load
up on foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and
healthy fats. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables,
nuts, and seeds in your diet to provide essential
nutrients for your skin. Foods like avocados,
walnuts, berries, and spinach are particularly
beneficial. Consider adding a daily supplement
of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help combat
dryness and inflammation. Also include
superfoods like baobab, maca, hemp seeds and
spirulina, which also offer wonders in hydrating
skin from the inside out. Remember, a nourished
gut and body equals healthy, vibrant, glowing
skin. Something we all need.
A delicious dish
for dinner à deux
This month we’re loving the Steenberg Nebbiolo from the standout 2017
vintage, which is especially delicious. The ruby red wine is all notes of strawberry,
dried cranberry and cherry juxtaposed with the earthiness of truffles and
mountain fynbos. It’s well-rounded, full, smooth and according to Steenberg
Cellarmaster Elunda Basson, it’s best enjoyed in typical Italian fashion with
artisanal charcuterie, parmigiana and risotto, as well as spicy Asian food.
Mushroom, pancetta and
truffle oil risotto
Try this delicious, rich risotto,
developed by Steenberg Executive
Chef Kerry Kilpin. Serves 2
You’ll need:
1 onion, chopped
50g butter
2 cloves garlic, chopped
150g pancetta, cubed
200g risotto rice
200ml dry white wine
250g assorted mushrooms, sliced
500ml vegetable or chicken stock
2 sprigs rosemary, chopped
125g parmesan, grated
50g butter
20g parsley, chopped
10 – 15ml truffle oil (or to your taste)
To make:
Sweat your onions and garlic with the
butter in a pot for about two minutes.
Add the cubed pancetta and cook
for a minute. Add your rice, cook for a
further minute until the rice starts to go
translucent on the outsides. Add the
sliced mushrooms.
Add the wine and allow the wine
to cook off and rice to absorb all
the liquid.
Add enough stock to cover the rice.
Cook on a medium heat.
After a further two minutes, add the
rosemary and top up with stock.
Throughout the cooking process
you will add stock and stir from time
to time.
You need to keep your risotto moist at
all times.
If you run out of stock and your rice
isn’t cooked, top up using water.
Once your rice is about two minutes off
from being cooked, add the parmesan,
butter, truffle oil and parsley and allow
to melt and season to taste.
Serve with a glass of Steenberg Nebbiolo.
DELUXE PETALS
Be blown away by luxurious velvety flowers, popping lipstick
shade petals and light perfume-scented bright edible flowers.
We’re planting… Impatiens Beacon ‘Lipstick’ which is a new colour in
the highly disease resistant Beacon range of bedding impatiens. It is
a vivid vermillion, just what we need to usher in spring. The Beacon
Impatiens is a fast-filling bedding impatiens for light shade or semishade.
It flowers non-stop from spring through to autumn and nothing
else quite matches it for colour and impact in the garden, as a border
or massed. Plant in fertile soil, spaced 15 to 20cm apart and feed with
a liquid fertiliser after planting and once a month thereafter for good
flowers. Impatiens like consistently moist but not soggy soil. The more
sunshine the plants get, the more water they need, with less in shadier
areas. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
There’s something luxurious, and very touchable about the velvety flowers and
leaves of Gloxinia. Despite its exotic looks, Gloxinia is an easy to grow houseplant
that likes a warm, bright position and only lightly moist soil. Like indoor violets,
Gloxinia don’t like wet leaves. An easy way to water them and keep the leaves dry is
to put the pot in a bowl with shallow water. Allow to plant to soak up the water for
about 15 minutes, then take it out and allow the pot to drain. Feed once a month
with a liquid fertiliser diluted at half-strength. Details: lvgplant.co.za
Evening Primrose (Oenethera Biennis) is more than
just a beautiful garden herb that opens its flowers as evening
approaches, spilling out its light perfume.
The bright yellow flowers play a very important role in
attracting beneficial insects that prey on pests and are a magnet
for pollinating bees and butterflies.
Every part of this plant can be used. The leaves can be cooked
and eaten as greens. The flowers are sweet and can be used in
salads or as a pretty garnish. Roast the ripe seeds in an oven
and use on bread or sprinkle over salads. As with all edible
flowers, use sparingly until you know how they affect you,
especially if you have plant allergies. Evening primroses grow
best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Sow between
spring and autumn. They can grow in poor soil as long as it
drains well. The flower spikes/inflorescences are produced in the
second year and reach up to 1m so it’s a good idea to position
them towards the middle or back of a bed. Plants will survive
long periods of drought but will grow and flower better with
regular watering. Although they die down in winter, cutting
down the plant to the ground will stimulate new growth in
spring. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
FOCUS ON ESTATE LIVING
COASTAL BLISS
Located on a unique stretch of coast, Seaton offers beach access and a sustainable lifestyle.
When it comes to estate living, the North Coast has really
exploded. Seaton Estate, which was developed by Collins
Residential, is one of the area’s most sought-after options.
And, with over a kilometre of direct beach access and a
range of lifestyle facilities, it’s easy to see why.
In developing the estate, great care has been taken in
rehabilitating the grasslands and forests to their former
glory from more than100 years ago. As such, Seaton is a
shining example of sustainable living, with a rehabilitation
programme that includes planting over 10,000 trees and
offering eco-friendly options for power and water.
The philosophy embraced in this developing community
permeates through the design guidelines, promoting
an eco-conscious mindset among all residents and
encouraging them to minimise their environmental impact.
The homes seamlessly integrate rehabilitated grasslands
with lush coastal forests, massive valleys of green areas, and
26km of running and cycling trails. Seaton also features a
world-class equestrian facility and a superb multi-sports
facility known as Seaton Country Club. Residents will have
access to the spectacular residents-only Seaton Beach
Club situated in close proximity to Christmas Bay.
One of the most impressive features of Seaton Estate is
the magnificently designed Gatehouse, which cleverly
balances people’s needs, design aesthetics and the
exquisite natural topography of the area. It’s a masterful
blend of contemporary design and natural beauty,
showcasing the estate’s commitment to sustainable living
and environmental conservation.
Seaton also enjoys reciprocity and access to additional
facilities in the neighbouring and more established
Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate. This means that residents
of Seaton will have access to a variety of additional lifestyle
facilities, including three clubhouses, a fitness centre, and a
restaurant in the Wetlands Clubhouse.
According to Murray Collins, founder of Collins Residential,
“Seaton Estate is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for
those who appreciate natural beauty, sustainable living
and a world-class lifestyle. We are committed to creating
an estate that is both environmentally conscious and
luxurious, and we invite you to come and see for yourself”.
The KZN North Coast is experiencing a notable influx of
around 45 families per month, and it comes as no surprise
given the excellent schools, top-notch amenities, and
convenient proximity to the airport. Seaton, situated along
an unrivalled 1km stretch of untouched coastline, boasts a
rarity that few other locations in the country can match.
reasons to add
2
GROOTBOS PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE
to your travel bucket list
The 4x4 Botanical Tour. And the honey served at
breakfast. “Walking through the Fynbos is one of
the most magical experiences you will ever have
in your life,” says Jo de Villiers, one of the reserve’s
expert guides. And she’s right. The area boasts
the richest temperate flora in the world ... more
than 900 plants species has been recorded on the
3500 hectares of wilderness. You’ll learn all sorts
of fascinating information ... like how a sunbird’s
beak fits perfectly into a flower, and why the honey
their bees produce is completely unique - and so
special it’s only served at their own restaurant. So
add on the Hive to Home excursion ... suit up, visit
the active beehives, and learn the important role
bees play in our environment and how delicate
their ecosystem is. We did a brilliant hike ... fynbos
for days, and exceptional bird watching, with more
than 100 different bird species to look out for.
There are more gentle walks, as well as horseback
riding through the fynbos or on the beach, and
fatbike tours over vast sand dunes and along the
stunning Walker Bay coastline. Those with sea legs
3
can experience marine safaris, whale watching in
season, and ... oh ... shark cage diving - which we
didn’t, and quite possibly never will - experience!
We fall for the more hedonistic treats ... so a cruise
down the Klein River on the Lady Stanford exclusive
luxury boat appealed, as did a spa beauty treatment
in the Milkwood forest, which promises to leave you
calmer, stronger and more centred.
The view from the window at the foot of the bed in our Forest
Lodge suite. Waking up to 180 degrees views of the fynbos and
the ocean is quite magical. The most romantic of the Grootbos
Private Nature Reserve accommodation options, you stroll
along walkways through the ancient Milkwood forest to the
Forest Lodge suites, where fireplaces are warm and the luxury
is uncompromising. Like the other lodge, there’s a restaurant,
lounge, barista bar and boma, along with a beauty spa and
library, and, when the weather plays nice, a swimming pool
... in this instance an infinity pool with ocean views. All jolly
swoonworthy. For those travelling with children, The Garden
Lodge, with the same unbeatable views, is more family friendly
... so alongside the tranquil wellness area, restaurant and elegant
wine cellar, the lodge has a heated swimming pool, a forestthemed
playroom and exciting kids programmes. And if you’re
after total seclusion and exclusivity there are two private villas -
the Fynbos Villa and the Sunbird Villa ... with your own swimming
pool, office, cinema room, wine cellar and fully equipped gym,
along with a private chef, butler and nature guide to see to your
every need. There’s even a small private landing strip for those
planning on arriving in a heli or small plane.
The Florilegium (n: a collection of illustrations
featuring plants from a specific garden or region)
collection of artwork at The Hannerie Wenhold
Botanical Art Centre. For lovers of botanicals and
art, this is a massive highlight. It’s a collection
of 124 original botanical illustrations by a
collaboration of more than 40 highly acclaimed
and celebrated mostly local but some international
artists, showing off the rare, endangered and
charismatic plants found on the Grootbos Private
Nature Reserve and surrounding regions.
4The simple, but perfect, crispy
calamari side dish. Really? A reason
to visit? Absolutely. When they
make a simple side dish this well,
imagine what they do with the rest
of the menu. You can posh it up, and
order the Pernod pan-fried calamari
with roasted romano tomatoes
and spinach linguini. Or the cured
rainbow trout poke bowl. Or indulge
in the tasting menu, which is five
courses of pure pleasure, paired with
equally pleasurable wines. Under
the guidance of brilliant Executive
Head Chef Benjamin Conradie, every
plate dished up is a work of art.
There are plentiful vegetarian and
vegan options, the organic veggies
and herbs are grown on their own
farm, all ingredients are responsibly
sourced, and there’s an impressive
wine collection to back up the food
menu ... bar a few bottles of imported
sparkling wines and champagnes
from France, they generally support
local and stock a sensational
collection of Cape wines.
5
The fact that Grootbos is so much more than just another luxury lodge in a
glorious surroundings. While the team know how to turn on the luxury and
provide an exceptional holiday experience, they are, they justifiably boast,
about much more than luxury travel. The entire Grootbos experience has
been built around a new movement they call Progressive Tourism. It’s all about
changing the world’s approach to tourism, and showing how ‘every action
we take has a positive impact’. So what, exactly, is progressive tourism? It’s a
term coined to explain a new way of living that is at the heart of Grootbos ...
it’s about every action they take benefitting someone else or having a positive
impact on the environment. So those fresh tomatoes you eat at lunch, the
recycled candles in your bedroom, the earrings you buy at the gift shop –
they’re all from Grootbos’ initiative to create sustainable livelihoods for the
people who call this unique area home.
The Grootbos Foundation, which was established twenty years ago, is a
non-profit company, which focuses on the upliftment of the surrounding
communities. They tell how they constantly research, innovate and pioneer
new ways of doing things ... and it’s more than just talk. More than 4500
community members benefit each year from the foundation, through
ecotourism, enterprise development, sports development and education.
They also have the objective of conserving, rehabilitating and protecting the
natural environment of the Western Cape region, particularly the magnificent
flora and fauna on Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and the Walker Bay region,
where there are 946 plant species, 195 bird species, 41 mammals and 22
amphibians – some of which are under threat of extinction.
Staying here, and seeing how well it works, is a celebration of ecotourism at
its best ... and you don’t need to take our word for it ... they have numerous
awards to prove they are world leaders in sustainable tourism.
Details: Rates are from R5950 a person a night during the Secret Season special, which is offered to South African residents only.
Otherwise from R13 650 a night, which includes meals and many of the excursions. For more infoand details, visit grootbos.com
For exclusivity ... there are
two private villas which
offer complete seclusion.
