his Dad’s Nissan Micra to drive 200 miles to play
GIGnotes :: August - 18th-26th (not 21st), 8.25pm (50 mins). At theSpace on
Niddry St. Upper Theatre (venue number 9), Niddry Street, Edinburgh. EH1 1TH.
Primal rhythmic energy and the impossible
union of opposites: 'Tandava' sees the
coalescence of Scottish guitarist Simon
Thacker’s startlingly passionate
soundworlds with the infinitely expressive
physicality of three gifted dancers from
India’s Piah Dance Company.
Together they create an unforgettable journey of rhythm, emotion and the
vibrant essence of Indian dance.
The Sanskrit word Tandava represents a cosmic dance which is the source of the
cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution, unifying seemingly irreconcilable
opposites.
Simon Thacker and Piah Dance Company explore Tandava, finding exhilaration
in uniting polarities: explosive guitar wizardry and stunningly intricate footwork
with hauntingly beautiful melodies and delicately fluttering fingers; multilayered
choreography and ecstatic rhythms of unstoppable momentum with sounds of
timeless fluidity and movements of sublime serenity.
Weaving musical alchemy and breathtaking choreography,
Tandava is an unforgettable multisensory experience.
Tandava is blissfully free of political agendas or propaganda. This distinct
approach allows for an immersive experience, enabling the audience to witness
the sheer brilliance of art in its most radiant and untamed form, performed by
leading artists at the peak of their powers.
Simon Thacker is one of Scotland’s most compelling musical figures. His
revelatory explorations have attracted worldwide acclaim, especially across the
Indian subcontinent. Piah Dance Company, founded by Priya Varunesh Kumar,
draws on the rich heritage of classical Bharatanatyam training and a deep love
of Gujarati and Rajasthani folk forms to realise new visions for their art. Piah
Dance Company first collaborated with Simon Thacker in 2019’s Mann Vasanai.
This world premiere of Tandava is their highly anticipated first full production
together.
Uniting Simon Thacker’s emotionally charged soundworlds with the enchanting
choreography of the India-based Piah Dance Company,Tandava is a revelatory
intercultural exploration of the expressive power of the visible and invisible,
dance and music.
MARTHA FFION plus support THE ELIDAS ::
At Lemon Tree, 5 West North Street Aberdeen.
7pm. Scottish Album of the Year Award
nominated Glasgow-based Irish singersongwriter
Claire McKay AKA Martha Ffion
makes her much-anticipated return with ‘The
Wringer’ – an elegant and heartfelt piano pop
song for a companion in need, inspired by Carole
King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend’. A back-to-basics
set of classic pop songs in the 60s songbook
vein, taking a raw and unfiltered look at love
and how it cuts both ways, it reaffirms Martha
Ffion as one of the most fluent songwriters of
her generation. Scottish twins Venice and Belle
have been performing as The Elidas since they
were 11. Originally from Aberdeen, they are now
based in the UAE, where their stripped back,
indie folk style is in demand at festivals,
concerts and gigs. They have won international
awards for their songwriting, with seamless
harmonies lending heart to their songs of
longing and missed chances.
North Street Aberdeen. 7pm. Callum Beattie has
been hard at music for almost half his life,
making his own chances, taking chances and,
for sure, being a chancer. The Edinburgh-born
singer-songwriter has progressed from bad gigs
in pubs, to where he is now: a singer-songwriter
with a punchy, rousing, emotive and gloriously
catchy debut album that scored a No.1 in The
Official Scottish Albums Chart. After residing in
London and Berlin for a few years, Callum has
decided to move back to Scotland. His new
material is a collection of songs clawed from the
raw stuff of existence, nostalgic patriotism and
bleeding love.
celebrate the release of their new album, 'The
Wireless Revolution' (Rock Indiana records/
Hurrah Musica). The Vapour Trails will open with
an acoustic set.
The Vapour Trails are an Aberdeen based
jangle pop band who verge on psychedelia.
Taking major inspiration from 60s acts like The
Byrds and CSNY they craft melodious,
harmonious, chiming pop music.
