London. Scottish singer-songwriter Philip Seth 

Campbell has unveiled “Magical West”, the first 

single to be taken from his forthcoming solo 

album ‘City Lights’ (out 1 September via Assai 

Records). With “Magical West” available to 

stream from 9 June, the new album ‘City Lights’ 

is set to land on 1 September. To mark the 

album’s release Campbell will be playing three 

in-store shows at Assai Records in Glasgow, 

Dundee and Edinburgh. He has also announced 

an extensive UK and Ireland tour for October/

Update from Brunton Theatre 

Trust – shows are not cancelled: 

Brunton Theatre Trust is bouncing back thanks 

to the support of performers, audiences, East 

Lothian Council and local partners. The Trust 

was hit by devastating news that its 

performance spaces had to shut with immediate 

effect for structural surveys. However, the 

programme of events has NOT been cancelled.

BIONDI and Band :: At The Queen's Hall, 

Edinburgh. Mario Biondi’s unmistakable deep 

voice is warm and sensual, yet clear and 

confident. Born Mario Ranno, he cultivated his 

passion for music from a young age, listening 

alongside his father, the singer Stefano Biondi, 

later making his stage name a tribute to him. A 

vast range of experience has made Mario the 

great artist he is today. He has sung in church 

choirs, been a session singer for niche labels 

and speaks perfect English, although he is a 

born and bred Sicilian from Catania. A lover of 

soul music, in 1988 he began supporting artists 

of international standing, including some of the 

calibre of the legendary Ray Charles. 


7 SEPTEMBER 

The Queen's Hall presents ..... ORCHESTRA 

BAOBAB (Senegal) :: At The Queen's Hall, 

Edinburgh. 2020 marked the 50th anniversary of 

Orchestra Baobab, one of Africa’s greatest 

bands. Adored both at home in Senegal and 

across the world, Baobab occupy a special place 

in the history of African music. Their epic story 

begins in the heart of Dakar’s Medina in the 

1960s and extends across the world and into the 

21st century, featuring a brilliant assembly of 

diverse musical personalities and encompassing 

a unique blend of Afro-Latin styles, international 

pop, West African griot music, and an after-dark 

West African nightclub ambience of lilting, 

mellifluous rhythms. 


8 SEPTEMBER 

CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS :: At Usher 

Hall, Edinburgh. Christine and the Queens this 

year curates the legendary Meltdown Festival at 

London’s Southbank Centre, beginning on the 

day of the release of 'Paranoïa, Angels, True 

Love', and running between 9-18 June; the 

artist will give two headline performances on 

both days of the finale weekend (both now sold 

out). He will also be performing at a number of 

festivals worldwide, including headline slots at 

Glastonbury Festival and Wilderness Festival, 

alongside numerous others, before returning to 

the UK + Ireland in the autumn for a run of 

headline shows.

and new liner notes. This reissue will include 12”

Summerhall / NEHH presents ..... JP 

COOPER :: At Summerhall, Edinburgh. 7pm. It’s 

often said that today’s musicians don’t “pay their 

dues” in the way previous generations did, 

whether it was the Beatles’ residencies at the 

Star Club in Hamburg or David Bowie hauling 

himself around clubs for years. However, JP 

Cooper has done all this and much more. He 

may now be scoring multi-platinum hits and 

collaborating with the likes of Stormzy. However, 

He’s been the guy standing outside a venue, 

handing out flyers for his music and tracks on 

burned CDs. He’s humped gear into the back of 

his Dad’s Nissan Micra to drive 200 miles to play 

for 20 people, a sound engineer and his dog. 


22 SEPTEMBER 

The Queen's Hall presents ..... SHAWN 

COLVIN :: At The Queen's Hall, Edinburgh. Over 

the course of three decades, Shawn Colvin has 

established herself as a captivating performer 

and a revered storyteller, well-deserving of the 

commendation of her peers and the devoted 

audiences who have been inspired by her 

artistry. And as she enters her thirtieth year as a 

songwriter and performer, she continues to 

reaffirm her status as a vital voice in music. 

Shawn Colvin stopped the industry in its tracks 

with her arresting 1989 debut, Steady On. The 

following spring, Colvin took home the GRAMMY 

Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, 

establishing herself as a mainstay in the singersongwriter 

genre. 


29 SEPTEMBER 

The Queen's Hall presents ..... RACHEL 

SERMANNI :: At The Queen's Hall, Edinburgh. 

Hailing from the Scottish highlands, Rachel 

Sermanni is an enchanting singer-songwriter, 

whose performance and lyrics draw from a deep 

well of mysticism, dreams, nature and the 

simple-complex experience of being human. A 

contemporary folk musician influenced by a 

wealth of genres including jazz, rock, old-time 

and traditional, she is announcing today her 

newest foray into her sonic subconscious, 

Dreamer Awake.

Summerhall / NEHH presents ..... LEITH 

ROSS :: At Summerhall, Edinburgh. 7pm. Leith 

Ross is a songwriter, singer, and artist born and 

raised in a small town outside of Ottawa, 

Ontario, Canada. They’ve been a sensitive and 

overly artistic person since birth, and when they 

started writing songs around the age of 12, it 

quickly became Leith’s favourite way to be 

sensitive and overly artistic. Still is. Since then,

Back To You is the third album from Irish roots, 

americana duo The Remedy Club. The songs see 

them broaden their sonic palette with strings 

and brass and features some notable Irish 

musicians including Aongus Ralston on bass 

(The Waterboys), Binzer Brennan on drums (The 

Frames) and Michael Buckley and Ronan Dooney 

on brass (Van Morrison). The album was co – 

produced by Gavin Glass in Orphan Studios, 

Wexford. While their second album was recorded 

in Nashville, musically this new chapter sees 

them heading towards Memphis and New 

Orleans with nods to Fleetwood Mac along the 

way carving out their own authentic path in Irish 

music. Husband and wife duo The Remedy Club, 

comprising Kj McEvoy and Aileen Mythen have

years of musical legend, this world-renowned

history as the single biggest night of 

traditional music to have ever taken place in 

Scotland. Due to fan demand and

Hydro will return to The Ovo Hydro in

ukulele player Claire Hastings has made a 

name for herself on the folk scene since 

winning BBC Young Traditional Musician of 

the Year in 2015. Originally from Dumfries 

and Galloway, Claire moved to Glasgow to 

study at the prestigious Conservatoire of 

Scotland, achieving a first-class honours 

degree in Scottish Music. Since then she has 

toured extensively, with standout 

performances including BBC’s Friday Night is 

Music Night alongside Lulu and Jamie Cullum, 

on BBC’s Hogmanay 2021 performing ‘Auld 

Lang Syne’ and as a soloist with the Scottish 

Symphony Orchestra, Randers Chamber 

Orchestra and Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, as well 

as numerous folk festival appearances. 

Following on from her first albums ‘Between 

River and Railway’ (Exquisite Songlines) and 

‘Those Who Roam’ (Highly engaging The 

Scotsman), Claire has recently released her 

highly anticipated third album ‘Lullabies from 

Scotland’. Joining Claire will be Jenn 

Butterworth; one of the most notable folk 

guitarists in the UK acoustic music scene. In 

recent years she was awarded ‘Musician of 

the Year’ from the Scots Trad Music Awards, 

and was nominated for the same title in the 

BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Claire will also be 

joined by first class fiddle player Laura 

Wilkie. Laura is another highly sought after

London and Berlin for a few years, Callum has 

decided to move back to Scotland. His new

DROPKICK + THE VAPOUR TRAILS :: At The

Hailing from the east of Scotland, Dropkick 

have drawn on influences such as Wilco, Tom 

Petty and The Jayhawks to produce their own 

blend of harmony-driven, power-pop for well

The XCerts + Support :: At Lemon Tree, 5

have announced a new album, ‘Learning How To 

Live And Let Go’. The alt rock band’s fifth 

album – and their first in five years – is set to

SKYLIGHTS :: At Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen. 

Infusing brit pop and post punk influences from 

the likes of Oasis, Courteeners and The Verve, 

indie rock quartet Skylights from Yorkshire are

slots with the likes of Shed Seven, The

The F.U's + The Fragz + Puppy Kickers :: At

Inverness. 7pm. Boston hardcore legends, THE 

F.U'S are in the UK for Rebellion Festival - we've 

been lucky enough to grab them for a warm up 

show in the Highland home for the alternative, 

The Tooth & Claw. The F.U.’s, pioneers of 

hardcore punk, are one of the original early-80's 

Boston hardcore bands. F.U.’s put out several 

releases, including on DIY label XClaim! They 

morphed into the Straw Dogs in 1986, made 

some more records, and broke up in 1993. The 

F.U.’s reunited in 2011 and after saving their 

pennies are finally releasing the Death Squad 

Nostalgia EP on their Yankee Vandal label. 

Support comes from Inverness young Funkpunk-metal 

crew, Puppy Kickers. Having been 

going from strength to strength since making 

their debut late last year, it's about time you 

caught these firestarters. Finally, the Teuchter 

Punk's from Buckie - The Fragz return to rip a 

new one after several great appearances at the 

venue. A full night of high energy, punk af music 

that's not to be missed.

touring, a surreal sense of humour and a self-deprecating underdog persona. In 2012, to celebrate his 60th birthday, 

John produced his debut movie - Otway the Movie: The Story of Rock n Roll’s Greatest Failure. The film was then 

taken to Cannes Film Festival and a 50-date tour of cinemas in both the UK and North America. It was subsequently 

voted the 2nd best film of the year in a poll of its readers conducted by The Guardian newspaper. Otway recorded a 

popular series of Face-book live shows during the 2020 Lockdown in the UK which has a regular audience of 10,000
