Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: C-View Inn in Cape May — this local staple is known 

for their wings and lives on the corner of Washington Street and Texas 

Avenue, just across the street from Wawa. 

The vibe: Inside you’ll find an old-school bar, very pub-like. Small, 

but mighty with plenty of tables and barstools for patrons. Flags, banners, 

photos and signs fill the walls, and the dimly lit dining room is 

comfortable and welcoming. We stopped in late on a Sunday night and 

were thrilled to be sat right away. The kitchen was pumping out food 

and the beer was flowing fast behind the bar. Sports were on every television 

— including ultimate frisbee playing on the TV next to us — and 

guests were flocking in and out through the night. 

The drinks: Speaking of beers flowing fast, we enjoyed a few ourselves. 

Nicole went for a Blue Moon and Dan had an Angry Orchard — 

both ice cold and just what we needed to close out a busy weekend. The 

C-Views drink menu is BIG. Tons of drafts, bottles and even seltzers 

— they specify they have too many to list so be sure to ask your server or 

bartender about the seltzer flavors if that’s what you’re in the mood for. 

The food: They’re known for their wings so it’s not hard to figure out 

what we ordered. Dan had some French onion soup to start and then 

enjoyed some hot wings and loaded fries. Nicole went for a side Caesar 

salad and boneless garlic-parmesan wings. She did steal a few of Dan’s 

hot wings — they were too good to pass up. Crispy, spicy and lots of 

meat to them. It’s really a great spot for a quick dinner and a couple of 

beers to wash it all down. 

The takeaway: The C-View is open year-round and has daily specials 

including Wednesday Wing Night which is ALWAYS packed, so 

you’ll want to arrive early. If you’re looking to catch a game, they’ll have 

it on the TVs. Hed in with the family, or a group of friends and you’re 

in for a good time and good food. The C-View has a parking lot just off 

the side of the building and there’s street parking all around. With it’s 

convenient location, its also a great spot to bike to!

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

July seems to be “off-season” for bird 

watching. The summer heat has sucked 

the music out of the mouths of birds 

leaving forests silent. It is still too 

early for the avalanche of southbound 

migrants that Cape May is celebrated for. 

The first southbound birds of prey will not 

arrive until August when the first migrating 

American Kestrels round Cape May Point. 

Once our second numerous raptor migrant, 

kestrel numbers have plummeted and what 

once was a flood of migrants is now a trickle. 

But July holds a secret. There are migrating 

birds slipping through. The breeding season 

is over and the great Canadian forests are 

starting to dispatch birds south. Among these 

earliest migrants is Northern Waterthrush, 

a ground-hugging warbler that may turn up, 

at any moment, beneath the forsythia in your 

yard. This pointy-faced, tail-bobbing species 

favors wet habitats, but a large lush stand 

of spotted touch-me-nots is sure to host a 

bird, or two. While you are listening for the 

bird’s loud distinctive “chip,” note, watch for 

hummingbirds. The ranks of hummingbirds 

are now augmented by migrants and these 

new arrivals seem irresistibly attracted to the 

vase-like blossoms of touch-me-not. 

The showy, Yellow Warbler’s southbound 

migration actually peaks in early August, 

weeks before most northern songbirds even 

arrive. Most obvious in July and August will 

be the Tree Swallows whose numbers swell 

in late summer, their ranks drawn to the 

surplus of large flying insects in our coastal 

marshes. Often seen coasting low over freshwater 

ponds and swimming pools. 

High overhead, from dawn to mid-morning, 

human residents may hear the loud “bink, 

bink...,” notes of Bobolink. These grassland 

breeding blackbirds are on their way to 

Argentina. Cape May is just a steppingstone. 

But for a few short weeks, the reeds in front of 

the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point 

State Park, may be festooned with the mustard-colored, 

crop-tailed birds. Once abundant, 

even into the seventies, human visitors 

would stand in open-mouthed wonder as the 

conjoined call notes of migrating Bobolink 

rained down from above, making the heavens 

sound as if they were festooned with ceramic 

wind chimes. 

So, yes, songbird migration is just getting 

under way, but in July and August, there is 

more to bird study than meets the eyes and 

ears. Stop by Cape May Bird Observatory, 701

free bird checklist.

me… and a blockbuster that brings 

back what “going to the movies” is 

all about. But first… let’s talk about a 

strike that threatens it all! 

When you heard about the Hollywood 

actor’s strike, your first thought may have 

been, “Yeah, like Tinsel Town celebrities really 

need a raise.” But, in fact, on average a member 

of the Screen Actors Guild makes $40,000 

per year. Not exactly celebrity wages. A lot of 

people start acting because they love it, not 

because they dream of stardom. 

To compare, the average wage for a 

National Football League player is $860,000. 

Don’t even ask about baseball and basketball 

player salaries. Big big money. So when it 

comes to being employed by this country’s 

pastime activities (sports, acting, gaming), 

you better love the arts — because generally 

there’s no real money in it! So stand with hard 

working artists fighting studio fat cats. See my

Now to the blockbuster. I’ve never been 

a huge fan of Tom Cruise, but I have newfound 

respect for him. What can I say? He’s 

either getting better with age or I’m getting 

less judgey! Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning 

should be the movie that gets you back to a 

theater. No, the storyline is not inventive. AI 

is going to take over the world. Throw in an 

overused MacGuffin by way of a two-part key 

everyone is trying to get their hands on (the 

very definition of a MacGuffin, I suppose).

If you’ve seen the trailer, I’m not giving 

anything away. You can see Cruise jumping 

off a cliff on a motorcycle even in the commercial. 

Amazing… but that’s not the end of

seeing this guy physically sprint through the 

streets of Venice at 61 years old… well, forget 

jumping off a cliff. Heck, I’m not even sure 

I was going to make it through the nearly 3 

hours of this flick without using the bathroom. 

Ok, ok… I had to duck out once like the old 

man I am (it was the 48-ounce soda damn it). 

I’m four years younger than Cruise! Kudos to 

this hotshot for keeping up. 

Thrilling! Over-the-top! Adrenalinepumping 

action! How many more descriptors 

can I pull from my machismo toolbox? Get to 

the theater. Grab popcorn and soda. But get 

a medium soda. C’mon… do I have to spell

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, enjoy the cuteness of the baby parade 

maids “caught’ in nets, and superheroes. 

Things are also a little bit crankier at the 

Baby Parade. For every bundle of sass waving 

enthusiastically, there are three who would 

rather be elsewhere. Some marchers attempt 

detours, so there are gaps. Some refuse to smile, 

no matter how Grandma cajoles. Many of the 

participants are sound asleep. The audience 

doesn’t mind a bit. Experienced parade participants 

incorporate sunshade, creating things like 

Cape May’s Baby Parade has a long history. 

According to an article in the New 

York Times, on September 5, 1933, the 

“juvenile jubilee” was already an annual 

event. The Baby Parade has many elements 

of any Cape May parade — a trolley, fire 

trucks, beauty queens and dignitaries. There are 

floats, Coasties, Cub Scouts and clowns. For this 

parade, however, everything is a bit cuter. 

The music is kid-friendly. You hear “Yes, Sir, 

That’s My Baby” and “Baby Face” with “On the 

Way to Cape May” sprinkled in. The “babies” — 

actually kids up to 12 — are dressed in costumes 

or in formal wear, and there are few things more 

charming than a tiny gent pulling at his bow tie 

or a young lady rejecting her tiara. There are 

groups in themed costumes — dinosaurs and 

paleontologists, fishermen and their catch, characters 

from the Wizard of Oz. There are nods to 

Cape May landmarks — a wagon made to look 

like a blue beach box, complete with boogie 

board and kite; a smaller version of the ferry; 

miniature Lobster House wait staff in uniform. 

There are little peanuts dressed as peanuts, mera 

covered wagon or a hot air balloon. Some of 

the conveyances show signs of age, having been 

recycled from a time when mom or dad was the 

baby, and some show signs of spontaneous creativity. 

It all adds up to an adorable event. 

The Baby Parade starts at Congress Street 

and Beach Avenue at 11am on Friday, July 28. 

(Rain date is July 29. That 1933 event was 

delayed by rain, in case you were wondering.) 

They march — or roll or toddle — along Beach 

Avenue to Howard Street, and participants are 

invited to Convention Hall for an awards ceremony. 

Participants can register at Convention 

Hall up until July 27, but there is “day of” registration. 

Participation is free. 

Traditionally, the Grand Marshall of the 

Baby Parade is Queen Maysea, winner of a pageant 

open to Cape May area girls from 6 to 10 

years old. The coronation of this year’s Queen 

will be held Wednesday, July 26 at 7pm at Cape 

May Convention Hall. Admission to the coronation

My sister and her children — my nieces 

who are 13 and 15 — went to lunch at Harpoons 

last week. It was near sunset and so beautiful. 

I was appalled that my sister allowed them 

to be on their phones the entire time. They 

barely spoke to me. I live in Barnegat and do 

not get here that often because of work. I’m 

afraid I lost my temper. I grabbed their phones 

out of their hands, and I told them to be in the 

moment at least until dinner was finished. It 

was a bit tense, but they did it. My sister is still 

angry with me, but I am unrepentant. I guess 

I could have handled it better. And for this I

problem which is not just typical of teenagers, 

but adults as well.

I work for a nonprofit and love my job. Our 

staff is small, and my co-workers and I get 

along pretty well. One of my co-workers comes 

from a wealthy family. She is getting married 

and her bridal shower is coming up. The rest 

of the staff want to “pool our resources” and 

buy her an expensive gift. I live paycheck to 

paycheck. I bring my lunch to work and rarely 

go out with the “gang” because I can’t afford it. 

The bottom line is I can’t afford to contribute. 

And then there’s the wedding gift. So, what 

to do? I like these people, but none of them 

struggle financially like me. — Squeezed

Take the person organizing all this aside. 

Kindly explain that you can only afford to 

contribute x amount of dollars. Tell them you 

would like to give more, but just do not have it.

own gift, if they are thinking of a group effort

CHEDDAR is a lively little guy who came to 

the shelter as a stray. It takes a little patience 

to get him to relax, but once he’s comfortable, 

he loves to be pet. He loves to walk and wander 

the yard, sniffing everything in his path. 

Cheddar needs to be with a family that understands 

his defensiveness and work with food 

resource guarding. 

RALPHIE is a medium-sized terrier who was 

brought to the shelter as a stray. He loves to 

play fetch and has tons of energy. Ralphie is 

a young dog who would be best if adopted by 

a family willing to continue his training. His 

leash skills are improving daily and he loves 

going on walks. This big-earred boy is ready 

for his new home! 

CHIEF is a happy, young dog who came to the 

shelter as a stray. He loves being with people 

and playing in the yard. Chief has excellent 

leash manners and loves to explore his surroundings. 

He is dog friendly, but selective 

with cats. Chief is housetrained and due to 

his large size, he would do well in a home with 

older children.

SINATRA was found crying in the basement 

of an abandoned house. He was in bad shape, 

but the shelter staff worked hard on him and 

he’s now a happy and healthy kitten. Sinatra 

loves to play and explore. He’d be good in 

a home with other cats, dogs and children. If 

interested in taking home this little domestic 

short hair, contact the shelter. 

CEDAR came to the shelter as an outside stray, 

but it can’t be certain for how long or if he has 

a previous owner. He is about two years old 

and getting his health in order. Cedar arrived 

a little beat up but is not a fighter. He’s gaining 

weight, up to date on all vaccinations and neutered. 

What Cedar needs is a loving home that 

will keep him indoors. 

GUS-GUS is a four-year-old boy who came 

from a hoarder house. He was kept in a dog 

rate in the basement of his previous home 

and unfortunately has poor vision. Gus-Gus 

is a shy and scared boy, but not aggressive. A 

home with no dogs or children is preferable, 

but he would do well with other cats. If interested 

in this true RESCUE, contact the shelter.
