Dean’s Message
Welcome to Business Connected Summer 2023
Summer: A Time for Rest and Reflection
As Summer 2023 arrives, it brings a welldeserved
break after a year of dedication in
the office and classroom. As we wrap up the
academic year, it's time to shift our focus
towards enjoying quality time with loved
ones.
The past two years have presented
extraordinary challenges, but your
commitment and professionalism have
allowed you to face them head-on. The
recent convocation ceremonies were truly
inspiring, witnessing our students crossing
the stage in six ceremonies, surrounded by
friends, families, and partners.
These ceremonies serve as a powerful
reminder of our impact and the resilience
our students possess.
While the Business School remains active
with over 6,700 students registered this
semester, the warmer weather opens doors
to new ways of working and taking time for
ourselves. The whiteboard in our school
kitchen has generated a lot of ideas for you!
Explore our community by taking leisurely
afternoon walks to Bluffer's Park, where you
can admire the cliffs and soak in the sun's
warmth. Marvel at the stunning lake vistas
while strolling along the trails of the
Scarborough Bluffs or embark on a hike
with friends and family in Rouge National
Urban Park.
For downtown adventures, I recommend
visiting Kensington Market—a vibrant mix of
boutiques, cafes, and vintage shops
creating a unique and lively atmosphere.
Immerse yourself in the Art Gallery of
Ontario, where the works of the Group of
Seven might inspire you to plan a canoe trip
to Ontario's picturesque north. Discover the
rich history and culinary delights of the
Distillery District as you walk along its
charming cobblestone streets, indulging in
fresh coffee and local pastries. Don't miss
the opportunity to attend outdoor concerts
at Yonge-Dundas Square or the Budweiser
Stage on the waterfront.
As you embark on your well-deserved
holidays, I encourage you to prioritize selfcare
and reflection. Take time to disconnect
from Zoom and Teams, reconnecting with
loved ones in meaningful ways. Whether
you immerse yourself in captivating novels,
savor moments on the beach, or simply
enjoy leisurely outdoor meals, let this
summer be a season of restoration.
On an administrative note, I look forward to
seeing all of you at the School’s Fall Kick-
Off event on August 28th.
Our focus for this meeting will be on themes
including engaging our international
students, faculty scholarship, and
Indigenous entrepreneurship. It's a jampacked
schedule that I believe you all will
enjoy!
On behalf of the entire community, I extend
my deepest gratitude for your unwavering
commitment and exceptional
professionalism. May this summer be a
cherished time of relaxation, rejuvenation,
and personal fulfillment.
Cheers!
Native Child and Family Services Graduation
The Business School celebrated the graduation of our seventh cohort
on this achievement.
What’s to come for next year...
We are excited for the unveiling of Centennial’s new A-block expansion, on track for completion Fall 2023.
This building is a significant first step towards realizing the goals outlined in the College's Indigenous
Framework and advancing our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation with the Indigenous peoples of
Canada. The building design inside and out will reflect Indigenous values and principles, and is based on
the concept of “two-eyed seeing" -- viewing the world through the lens of Indigenous knowledge and the
lens of Western knowledge. We look forward to celebrating our next NCFST Graduation in this new space.
passion for both Centennial and his future goals. Q has a passion for learning and people, is inquisitive, and is well-spoken. He listens intently without interruptions
and can articulate what others are thinking and feeling in a positive way that encourages others to trust and respect him. He is thoughtful and believes in helping
others before himself. At his own expense and time, I have watched Q go to great lengths to help his classmates not only with their studies, but also on a personal
level. He has spent so much time trying to make everyone around him feel good and do well so I felt he also deserved some recognition.” Professor Sherry Stanton
INTL710 students pose with the Quantum Lifecycle Partners and Centennial CSR teams, building meaningful
connections and gaining hands-on experience in corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiatives.
CSR Revolution: How it's Changing the Game for Global
Business Students from Awareness to Action
"Our actions have consequences," a thought often
overlooked in our fast-paced, consumer-driven society. As
Global Business Management students from Centennial
College, we were fortunate enough to take a course on Corporate
Social Responsibility under Professor Natalie Chinsam, who was
incredibly knowledgeable and made every class an experience to
remember. The course opened our eyes to the impact of our daily
choices on the environment and society.
Plastic pollution, fast fashion, climate change, palm oil industry, and
deforestation are just some topics discussed in this course. It was
alarming to learn about the significant impact of our actions on the
environment, and it made us realize that we need to take
responsibility for our actions.
This course significantly impacted our group, changing how we see
waste, our spending habits, our view on recycling, and ultimately
how our small ways can impact the environment. We learned about
the various ways we can reduce waste, such as using reusable
bags, water bottles, and straws and opting for products that are
packaged in eco-friendly materials. We also learned the importance
of reducing our carbon footprint by reducing energy consumption,
carpooling, and using public transportation
However, the highlight of the course was our final presentation on
e-waste and its connection to mountain gorillas. This topic hit us
differently as we realized how hard it is to recycle our e-waste when
we went on our class trip to Quantum Lifecycle Partners LP -
Toronto [photo above]. It was a rainy Friday, and while seeing how
advanced their facilities were was amazing, seeing how tedious the
whole process was significantly impacted us. It left us wondering
whether we need the latest mobile phone or can make do with what
we have.
Green Minds team shines in INTL710 - Sec 001 class, winning best pitch and presentation awards.
As we move forward, we are grateful for the lessons we have
learned from this course. It has taught us to think critically, act
responsibly, and be mindful of our daily choices. We are now
equipped with the knowledge and skills to impact the environment
and society personally and professionally positively. We hope
others will join us in taking responsibility and making a difference.
Remember, our actions have consequences, and we must create a
better future for ourselves and future generations.
Say cheese! INTL710 - Sec 001 class of Winter 2023 captures a momentous occasion as they
embark on a global learning and cross-cultural collaboration journey..
"The Shop" on the bridge at
Progress Campus
April 10 – 14, 2023, students in the Fashion Business and
Management program launched a pop-up shop
celebrating Indigenous art and design. The Shop opened
on the Progress Campus bridge from 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM,
daily. All products sold in The Shop were by Indigenous artists
and brands found across Tuttle Island. Students collaborated
with nine artists and brands, bringing their products and story
to the Centennial College community. Indigenous artists and
brands who took part in “The Shop” included: Assinewe
Jewelry, Goodwill Collection, Kokom Scrunchies, MDW
Jewelry, MINI TIPI, SECTION 35, Skwálwen Botanicals,
Warren Steven Scott and Wildcraft.
The Shop was a huge success, closing with 71% of units
sold… better than most retail stores! A profit of $3,105.60 was
made, all of which has been donated to diverse Indigenous-led
organizations selected by the artists and brands themselves.
Organizations include:
• The Odawa Native Friendship Centre
• Mémiyelhtel
• Edmonton Aboriginal Seniors Centre
• Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund
• Native Women’s Resource Centre of Toronto
• Native Youth Health & Wellness Centre
• Indian Residential School Survivors Society
• Crosby Gitigaan Farm
The Fashion Business and Management students and faculty
would like to thank everyone that came out to The Shop for
their support. This experiential learning opportunity was one of
the highlights of the 2022/23 year. A special thanks goes out to
Dean, Barry O’Brien, and Chair, Steven Khan, for making this
opportunity happen.
Thank you to Professors Pamela Richards, Sharon Pope, and
Jason Morikawa for all their support with this event.
Cheers to students who keep things colourful
We like to share some pictures of our Medical
Terminology 2 classes 237-001 and 002. “One of my
students, Jason, started a color wearing trend every
Thursday and when I asked why he was organizing this he
stated, “ I want to enjoy my time at Centennial and have fun
at the same time so I chose different colours each week that
we could wear just for fun. This way I have pictures to look
back on” Jason was not only a great student but kind, fun and
caring just like all of the students that engaged in this simple
act. We had a great time taking the pictures and now I will
also have the memories forever too.”
Congratulations and good luck to you all.
Centennial Wins Bronze at the Eastern Region
Financial Case Competition
Centennial College has a rich history as it
pertains to the Canadian Institute of Financial
Planning (CIFP) Case Challenge. In recent
years our teams have performed exceptionally well.
In 2017 Centennial College won a bronze medal at
the Eastern Canadian Competition. In 2018
Centennial College won a gold medal at both the
Eastern Regional Competition and at the National
Competition. 2019 marked the last year Centennial
College participated in the CIFP Case Competition
prior to the COVID 19 Pandemic. Once again
Centennial College upheld their winning ways by
winning a bronze medal at the Eastern Canadian
Competition.
2023 was the first time Centennial College competed
in the CIFP Case Competition since the COVID 19
Pandemic. We were fortunate to have a number of
highly motivated students who wanted to participate.
This resulted in Centennial College entering two
teams into the 2023 Eastern Canada Competition.
The coaches are equally proud of the two teams as
they both worked extremely hard throughout the
process and managed to perform at an exceptionally
high level under very stressful circumstances.
I would like to thank my fellow coaches, Professors
Michael Monette and Ken Elles, for their valuable
contributions as coaches throughout the process.
Article by Lyle Van Every BA, CFP
Professor, The Business School
Editor’s Note: Special thanks to Professor Lyle Van Every for
leading the case competition and all the support provided to
students and colleagues.
The team comprised of Navneet Kaur, Saloni Nath
and Thilaksi Chandresekar performed at an
exceptionally high level and won a well-deserved
bronze medal in the competition.
The team comprised of Patrick Uy, Bhoomi
Girdharbhai Gevariya and James Wong put on an
Accounting Case Competition
On February 17, 2023, The Business School held an
Accounting Case Competition with the objective of allowing
students to showcase their technical accounting knowledge
and essential employability skills (i.e. critical thinking, collaboration,
teamwork and communication skills). Four student teams were
given 90 minutes to review the case and prepare their
recommendations to a panel of industry judges in a 15-minute
presentation. The judges provided overall feedback which reflected
the professionalism and knowledge of our students.
Congratulations the winning team, Sumanth Jaligama and Manh
Vu, and thank you to all student participants, ambassadors, and
faculty supporting cast of Timothy Ng, Cheryl Dyson, Stephen
student participants, Sumanth Jaligama:
“I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for conducting
the Accounting Competition, which has been a great
opportunity for me to enhance my skills in the field of
accounting. Your efforts in organizing this competition have been
instrumental in providing a platform for students like me to
showcase our knowledge and skills in the subject. This
competition helped me grow both personally and academically,
and I am grateful for the recognition and validation that this has
brought.
Cheers to all our students who took part in the 2023 Accounting Case Competition, and all our faculty
and staff who provided support in this event.
Microsoft Office Specialist Qualifiers
Twenty-seven (27) Centennial College students qualified to
compete in this year’s Microsoft Office Specialist National
Championship. The competition was done virtually on June
5, 2023. Although we did not have any finalist this year, even being
invited to compete is an achievement to be recognized since only
the top 10 students with the highest exam scores in each course
[Microsoft Excel (Microsoft 365 Apps and/or Office 2019), Microsoft
PowerPoint (Microsoft 365 Apps and/or Office 2019) and Microsoft
Enactus students compete in Cross College Entrepreneurship Challenge
Enactus Centennial students were once again in competition mode this
April 2023, taking part in the Cross-College Entrepreneurial
Challenge hosted by Riipen. This competition enables students from
across Ontario to collaborate to solve a real challenge for a business, while
collaborating with their peers and competing against George Brown,
Humber and Algonquin College.
For this competition, Muna M, founder of eight50coffee, (and Centennial
alum) provided the teams with a business challenge that they needed to
address. Teams also had the opportunity to have a 15-minute conversation
with Muna to ask questions and clarify any issues as they put their solutions
together. The expectation is that students would be doing research on the
industry to be able to utilize that information to further explore relevant
areas for Muna and her team. The Teams then submitted a 5 - 10 minute
video explaining their business solution(s) which was reviewed by the
company to select a winner in 3 categories: Best Overall Solution, Best
Video, and Best Intrapreneurial Skills. Plus, there will be an internship
possibility at eight50coffee for one of the members of the winning team.
Cheers to our team for taking part in this event!
4th Annual Skills Competition
The School of Engineering Technology and Applied Science
(SETAS) and The Business School (TBS) hosted the 4th
annual Skills Competition. This internal skills competition
focused on these areas: 1) Coding 2) IT Office Software
Applications 3) Web Design and Development. We would like to
congratulate TBS Student, Aneri Patel, currently taking our
Business Administration – International Business program, who won
the IT Office portion of the competition.
Enactus compete at Regionals
On March 9 and 10, 2023, the Enactus Centennial Team
competed at the Enactus Canada Regional Exposition –
Central Canada, held at Hilton Mississauga/ Meadowvale.
At the competition, the team’s presentation focused on Project
Reset, a social venture aimed at creating awareness and education
in mental health resiliency for youth ages 18 to 25. Although our
team did not win this time, it was an opportunity for the students to
bond, learn and develop new plans for the future.
After the Regional competition,
Enactus Centennial has kept
busy, collaborating with Career
Services to address Mental
Health by reducing the stress
associated with finding a job by
hosting a Resiliency Workshop
on March 23, 2023. The Enactus Centennial chapter continues to
develop other activities as well around campus and in the
community, with plans for a Mercato event still on the way.
For the IT Office competition, students were tasked with how well
they knew the standard tools of the business trade. “They tested us
on different aspects of the Microsoft Office,” Aneri says, “to see how
deep you know your skills, and how good you are with tools like
Accreditation
The Business School’s Strategic Management
Accounting Graduate Certificate program (2844)
has received the Association of Chartered
Certified Accountants (ACCA) re-accreditation through
December 31, 2027, achieving an additional
Incredible generosity from CIFFA
supporting student scholarships
We are truly grateful for our amazing industry
partners including the Canadian International
Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA) who
continues to go above and beyond supporting our
students. Not only did CIFFA cover the additional
$2000 when there was a 3-way tie of students who
qualified for their CIFFA scholarship, but, in addition,
through CIFFA’s new charity, CIFFA Cares, they will be
donating a grand total of $29,000 to Centennial
College this year. This $29,000 total includes the
existing $3000 scholarship, the additional $2000
requested, and an extra $24,000 for this year to
allocate to supporting our students. We are incredibly
thankful of this generosity.
Real-world Experience
Fashion Business and Management Students
partner with STC on large-scale “capstone” project
Fashion Business and Management students teamed up with the
Scarborough Town Centre mall in their latest, large-scale
“capstone” project. Over the course of 14 weeks, four groups of
FBMT students were tasked with researching and proposing
solutions based on real business needs. In December 2022, the
groups presented their proposals to a panel including a Centennial
College judges, as well as STC Management, resulting in not one,
but two winners being selected, due to the strength of their
proposals. Congratulations to Group 1 (Claudia, Laura and Irem) and
Group 3 (Shawny, Yolitzin, Nayeli and Luisa) whose strategies will be
implemented by STC. [Featured on the right >>>]
The Clarendon Trading Company
Professor Stephanie Herold partnered with Program Advisory
Committee Member Colette Liburd, Owner of The Clarendon
Trading Company, to develop an experiential learning
opportunity for students in the Fashion Business & Management
program. FBMT 206 Retail Environment students were granted the
opportunity to re-merchandise The Clarendon Trading Company
location at Scarborough Town Centre to flex their display skills using
sustainable, pre-loved garments. The students first created a
reimagined storefront for The Clarendon Trading Company without
any design constraints.
Then, in groups, they
created and executed
real-world visual
merchandising plans
working with the oneof-a-kind
product
available in store on
Valentine’s Day.
Digital Engagement Strategy Capstone
This April 2023, the Digital Engagement Strategy program
announced the winners of the 5th Annual Capstone
Competition. The Capstone program, led by student
consultants, successfully delivered a tailored digital engagement
strategy for Biosyyd, a leading Cannabis Research and Development
firm based in Lithuania. This comprehensive plan, developed through
extensive market research, data analysis, and creative solutions,
aimed to enhance Biosyyd's online presence and position them as a
health and wellness CBD brand, driving online leads and increasing
sales. The outcome of this work has been built into a case-study for
future reference and the program is deepening their relationship with
Biosyyd for future collaboration.
How students solve real business
problems in Fashion Business and
Management
The fashion world is a changing industry, full of
upheaval, advancement and shifts in the global
market, particularly in the wake of COVID-19, so
businesses like malls need to keep current. This very real
business need was the concern of Fashion Business and
Management students on their latest, large-scale
“capstone” project, which saw them teaming up with the
Scarborough Town Centre mall.
Here’s how the project, called Centennial x STC worked:
Over the course of 14 weeks, four groups of FBMT
students had to come up with the answers to four
questions:
• How to drive foot traffic to the STC mall to generate
revenue?
• How to celebrate the STC’s 50th anniversary in
2023?
• How shopping malls around the world stay
competitive?
• How to adopt digital tools to engage the community?
The four student teams were tasked with researching and
proposing solutions, and in December 2022, presented
them to a group of Centennial College judges, including
Business School Dean Barry O’Brien, Business School
Chair Steven Khan, Finance Professor Lana Durst,
Digital Marketing Professor Jason Beaulieu, and Pamela
Richards, the Capstone Professor who organized the
project. But more importantly, the student ideas were
also presented to STC Management, represented by
Vianna Ko, Marketing Manager, and Karen Monique
Calbuso, Marketing Specialist.
Otishè Fashion Show
Second year Fashion Business and Management student, Omamoke
(Mamo) Oyovwi, presents his fashion collection celebrating the rich
cultural heritage of Africa on March 16, 2023 at the Event Centre.
The fashion show was in partnership with the Centennial College
Innovation, Inclusion, Reconciliation and Healing (IIRH) department.

OTISHÈ: HOW A CENTENNIAL COLLEGE STUDENT WILL BE USING
A FASHION SHOW TO TELL A STORY OF BLACK RESILIENCE
Creating Otishè
“When I was back home, I’d create collections
every year, and always tell a story with the
collection,” Mamo says. “Here, I realized that I
haven't made a collection for the past two years,
and I'd been looking for an opportunity to do
that.”
“I heard about Black History Month, and the idea
just came to me that I would love to tell a story
about black culture and black history through my
craft,” he says. “I realized that I could tell the
perfect story with the African clothes that I make
about the culture, surviving slavery, and
resilience and creativity.” And, it turns out,
Centennial College would help him make it
happen.
“I proposed it to my professor and she was really
excited about it. She introduced me to the IIRC,”
he says. “They supported me with $2,000 to
fund the project.”
Telling a story
“I'm an African designer with an extensive
understanding about African culture,” Mamo
says about Otishè, a Nigerian word that means
“charm and resilience against effective assaults
and violence.”
“I'm designing this collection to tell a tale and to
celebrate diversity and inclusiveness here in
Canada,” he continues, “and to demonstrate
how black culture emphasizes equality, wealth
and similarities, not distinction. Also, since
Canada is a very diverse place, I really want to
hold it on Black History Month by creating this
collection and also to convey black
distinctiveness via materials, craft and patterns.”
“I picked five different African countries and 15
trendy designs,” he explains. “They’re western
designs, but with African prints with African
fabrics, to tell a story about diversity here at
Centennial College, as well.”
The next part of the journey
Outside of getting a chance to tell an important
story, putting the show on is going to serve as
an important step in Mamo’s career journey.
“This is going to be my first practical operation
here in Canada using what I've learned from the
school,” he says. “So I believe that expressing
my creative side is going to tell a story about my
personality to any firm that I apply to.” And as for
where he wants to end up?
“As an African designer that has passion for
fashion, I really want to explore fashion and
contribute to the fashion industry on the global
scene,” he says. “I want to learn more about the
fashion industries here in Canada, the USA and
other western countries. And with the knowledge
and experience I gather, I will be able to
restructure my brand “Mamomania” and take it
to another level.”
The courage to show yourself
“I was really scared to come up with this,” Mamo
admits about Otishè, “because this is a new city,
but I had to know what I want, and know what is
in me.” This is something he wants to pass on to
other students: being brave enough to express
the creativity inside you.
“You don't have to suppress what you have, you
just have to tell the story of what you can do,” he
continues. “We have a lot of people out there
that are even more talented than I am, but are
scared to actually come out with what they have.
They don't really get what they want, because
they’re scared to maybe tell the world what they
are made of. So my advice to them is to just
come out with what they have, and express
themselves.”
Centennial made it happen
As for the Otishè collection, the final finishing
touches are being put on the March 16 show,
something Mamo’s grateful to the College for.
“I graduated from university and I've also gone
to fashion school for one year,” he says. “And I
didn't get this kind of opportunity. Centennial
College actually helped me come up with this
great idea, and they encouraged me to come up
with my best, so I really appreciate that. And
that's why I'm happy to be here.”
and exciting career as claims adjusters. The graduates are extremely
excited to be able to begin their insurance careers with Northbridge
THE SECRETS TO CAREER SUCCESS:
FASHION BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT
STUDENTS ASK THE EXPERTS
Four pros from the fashion industry met with students for a networking presentation,
hosted by The Business School, and provided valuable, insider information about their
industry, how to get into it and how to succeed. Thank you Anna Care, Director of Digital
Experience at Aritzia, Colette Liburd, Owner of the Clarendon Trading Company, Janet
Ellis, Corporate High End Manager at Louis Vuitton, and Tracy Platt, Associate Vice
President of Product Development Style and Home at Canadian Tire. Here’s a peak at
one of the questions:
What skills are the most
important to have?
For Anna, it’s the ability to collaborate. "I've
worked with a lot of different teams, a lot of
different personalities," she said. "And it's really
just kind of adjusting and figuring out ways to
work with one another in an effective way."
For Tracy, it’s the ability to market yourself.
"Being able to market yourself is a skill that takes
a lot of time to develop," she said. "What are your
strengths? And how do you promote that and
even market that to other people?"
For Janet, it’s interpersonal skills. "What's
really important is not just being an effective
communicator," she said. "For me, it's also about
listening and gauging the response. I'm actually
quite introverted, and when I'm meeting with
colleagues or clients, a lot of what I do is listen
and observe. Because for us, it's about
relationships."
For Colette, its good old-fashioned believing in
yourself, as informed by her own life experiences.
"My parents are immigrants, they came to this
country with a very clear plan," she said.
"Venturing into the role of entrepreneurship is
very gray and unstable and worrisome for
someone like a parent, right? I really had to work
on honing in on my belief in myself, and my ability
to take something in my mind and transition it into
something that's physical and tangible."”
Work-Integrated Learning in Insurance Management
To cap off their insurance studies, students in the
Insurance Management program had the opportunity to
put their new skills and knowledge into practice through a
two-week field placement. Our Program Advisory Committee
(PAC) members and employer partners welcomed students into
their workplaces, providing opportunities for experiential
learning. Students were given the chance to job shadow
insurance professionals, participate in a ride along, attend
business meetings and perform insurance related tasks. With a
record number of students enrolled in the program, our PAC
members stepped in to provide additional placements and to
promote the field placement program to their members and
networks. With the help of our PAC, we were able to expand
our employer partner network, ensuring that every student had
the opportunity to work with an employer for the field
placement. PAC members Aviva, Crawford, Intact and
Northbridge all hosted multiple students. Additionally, The
Commonwell arranged a special field placement to allow a
student with a keen interest and experience to learn about farm
insurance in Canada.
Our PAC industry partners IBAO, IIC (Career Connections) and
ORIMS went above and beyond in promoting the program to
their members and within their networks to help us forge new
partnerships. With the assistance of our PAC members, we
were able to place our 39 students with 26 employers,
including 18 new employer partners. Student feedback on the
placements was overwhelmingly positive and there was a clear
consensus that this opportunity is extremely valuable to
student learning. We are extremely proud that several of our
students have been offered employment upon graduation with
some of our field placement partners, including Crawford,
Northbridge and Hunters International.
We are extremely grateful for the continued support of our PAC
members, who help make the field placement program
successful and allow us to offer quality education to our
students.
Students participating in the insurance management field placement at Northbridge
Financial were able to job shadow and participate in claims and insurance sales ridealongs.
NEW TBS Profiles
Dr. Resmi Ann Thomas PhD
Full-time Professor, Marketing Research & Analytics
What I do
I am serving The School of Business as a faculty,
teaching Market Research and Analytics. I was
serving Centennial part time before I joined as a
full timer. I do what I am most passionate about:
talking, teaching and research.
Before I joined Centennial
Even with over 12 years of research, teaching and
consultancy experience back from India, it has
been quite a professional journey for me in
Canada. I started by volunteering to teach mental
math to school students, before joining an
organization as a research analyst. I was the
Director for Data Quality of an MNC. And here I
am, serving my Alma-mater as a full timer and
simply love it here.
Things you may not know about me
I am a proud mom of two teenagers. It has been 7
years since I moved to Canada and had to take
care of my kids by myself because my husband
couldn’t move with me from Saudi Arabia. He
joined us this year, and we are looking forward to
enjoying every minute of family time together. I am
also hoping to bring my MIL and parents to Canada
so that my kids can cherish and treasure the love
of their grandparents (and also because I miss real
tasty food back from home).
The best part of my day
This brings out the duality of my personality. I love
being in campus teaching students and at the
same time love being at home unwinding. It is
interesting to meet and engage with students also
to learn much more when they ask their doubts. I
equally enjoy being with my family who
unconditionally accepts me. Let’s just say that I
enjoy every day, every minute to the fullest.
Accomplishments
I did my PhD from Indian Institute of Technology-
Madras. I have published in A and B rated journals
and have guided and produced two PHD’s. I scored
the first rank for my PG and won the gold medal
from the State.
Long-Term Service Recognition
We would like to take a moment to recognize our Business
School colleagues who were celebrated at Centennial
College’s Long-Term Service Awards recognition event on
February 22, 2023. This event recognized those who reached
milestones in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Congratulations, everyone!
Please note, due to complexities in the system it is possible some members in our
area may be missing from the list below. Also, the information used to calculate
the years of service is calculated by employment type (Eg. for staff who started
out as part-time, then moved to full-time roles, it unfortunately does not capture
the contract time).
Terry Pruner, Diana Daniels, Scott Tanaka, Abrahim Farah Neto, Tahmina Qassem, and Holly Main
celebrate 5-years of service at the Long-Term Service Recognition Event
Scholarly Activities
Exploring Student Perceptions of
Empowerment
In 2021/2022, Professor Katie Bannon had the
opportunity to lead a research project funded by the
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) that
explored Student Perceptions of Empowerment in higher
education (specifically COMP106 students were invited
to participate).
Business School Faculty Exchanges Abroad
This March, Business School faculty participated in international
faculty exchanges in France and Andorra. Professors Peter
Jackson and Jason Beaulieu, taught at INSEEC University in
France in the areas of International Business and Supply Chain and
Digital Engagement Strategy respectively, while using the case
method. Also, Human Resources Professor Erin Noble, attended the
University of Andorra, teaching on how mental health impacts HR
Practices. Thank you to Professor Peter Jackson for providing the
photos above.
Learning and Development Committee
In Winter 2023, The Business School announced the relaunch of
the Learning and Development Committee, under the leadership of
Chair Steven Khan, which had been temporarily suspended due
to COVID-19. We to welcome submissions again from faculty and
staff. The LDC mandate is to support and advocate for individual and
group professional development opportunities within School, thus
advancing our collective capacity for a high-standard of learning
practice, leadership and scholarship. The goals of the committee are
to promote professional development opportunities in the Academic
School and encourage sharing of newly acquired knowledge across
the Centennial College stakeholder community. If you are interested
in submitting for an upcoming Learning and Development opportunity,
the link to the application form can be found HERE.
We encourage you to check out Katie’s article in the
latest issue of Teaching and Learning Innovation Digest
which includes a poster and short podcast exploring this
research further. The article not only relates to the topic
of teaching and learning but it is an opportunity to learn
from the amazing students who participate in the COMP
courses.
“I had so much fun working on this project, and
although I feel as though I barely scratched the
surface of the topic of empowerment, I learned so
much from the students who participated. I was
supported by an amazing team including my research
assistants (former Centennial students Maria Vergel
Aressi and Twinkle Garg), the SoTL department and the
chairs who approved the opportunity for me to conduct
the research (thank you, Amanda!)”
In Memoriam
In Memoriam
Victor Sousa
March 26,1955 - March 29, 2023
It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of our beloved colleague, and friend to
many, Victor Sousa.
Victor loved Centennial College with all his heart and was a passionate professor who taught in
the Marketing Research & Analytics Program and other Marketing programs across The
Business School.
Victor taught in the School for more than 20 years and was always there to support faculty,
staff, and most importantly his students, which whom he always put first. Even when he wasn’t
feeling at his best, he made it clear that he wouldn’t let anything impact the learning experience
for his students. Victor really strived to do his best and in turn get the best out of his students.
Victor believed in giving back to the community and had served on several hospital boards,
such as UHN, Doctor's Hospital, and helped found the Kensington Health Gardens. His care,
kindness and good humour reached all those around him.
Many of you knew Victor well and we will miss him for the wonderful person he was.
