Sandcastles & Sun
It was a hot one on Saturday, July 15 and the Cape May beaches were packed with summer
visitors. Abby, Nancy, Isla, Piper and Maisie spent the day making drip castles in the sand and
swimming in the waves. More photos from the beach inside. Aleksey Moryakov

-2pm
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Hooked Up Seafood on Delsea Drive — make a right at
the light just before the bridge heading toward Wildwood. You’ll see the
giant blue crab on their red roof — can’t miss it!
The vibe: Think seafood shack! Very much a grab-your-own-table
kind of place. We only waited about 10 minutes before sitting down at
one of their picnic tables. The restaurant is dockside, so the boats are
right there and sometimes the crew is filleting the fish or offloading the
boats — talk about fresh! Hooked up is also a great spot to catch the
sunset. It sets over the marsh and it’s a beautiful sight while kayaks and
crabbing boats float by. Hooked Up Seafood is a family-owned business
and everyone working is kind and welcoming. It’s a very fun place
to be and we had a great day out.
The drinks: Important to note that they are BYOB. It was a hot day,
so we just brought some water, but we recommend an ice-cold Corona
Light to pair with your seafood.
The food: As we mentioned, everything is FRESH! Courtney
enjoyed steamers, cold shrimp and Jersey corn on the cob. Big fans of
the steamers — the delicious white wine and garlic broth paired with
garlic bread is to die for. Her friend Laura and her mom split cod tacos
with pineapple mango salsa, lime slaw and drizzled with chipotle aioli
plus a shrimp skewer. Other menu choices include their fish of the day
sandwiches or tacos, chowder of the day, and a couple of kids options
like fish fingers and a hot dog.
The takeaway: Hooked Up Seafood is open Thursday-Monday and
closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Keep up with their hours on their
website — they are updated weekly! If you want fresh seafood, this is
the place to be. Remember to bring your drinks with you and it’s also a
good idea to keep the bug spray handy. You’ll be sitting outside near the
water and it’s not uncommon to need it.

Chef Carl Messick has taken over what was once
Godmother’s and transformed it into a relaxed, finedining
restaurant. Exquisite dishes featuring seasonal
and sustainable ingredients.
A locals’ favorite for a reason. There’s a Key West vibe,
good food, regular entertainment, and the views are
spectacular.
A little slice of paradise on the bay, enjoy dishes
with Caribbean flair, listen to a few jam bands and
watch spectacular sunsets while sipping a cocktail or
domestic draft.
This year brings new ownership to the beachfront
restaurant and bar. Rooftop dining, live music, fresh
local seafood and signature orange crushes — the
fun awaits!
Just steps from the Washington Street Mall, Iccara
Italian Bistro & Seafood brings you the fresh flavors of
Italy in a charming, welcoming atmosphere.
A Jersey Shore classic serving brunch and dinner.
Visit their full bar mixing up specialty Jersey-themed
cocktails, craft beer, and much more. Enjoy indoor
and outdoor dining with an expanded patio.
Offering fresh seafood and a variety of burgers,
sandwiches, salads and apps. Make sure to grab a
stool upstairs overlooking Surfside Pier and enjoy
local craft beer and signature cocktails.
Take-out, fish market, restaurant, raw bar, breakfast,
dinner... The Lobster House has it all. Drinks on the
Schooner American before dinner is a must-do Cape
May experience.
Enjoy wicked waterfront sunset views, delicacies from
land and sea, handcrafted cocktails and really good
wines, located on the second floor of the Cape May
The menu features all regional fare including fish,
vegetables, fruits and herbs from Beach Plum Farm
and other New Jersey farms. They also offer some fun
sweets next door at the Chocolate Shop.
A huge hit and locals’ favorite for a reason. Excellent
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
As readers of this column have
undoubtedly surmised, this writer
is enamored of Osprey, or the
Fish Hawk. Pioneering ornithologist,
Alexander Wilson, too, was
enchanted by the boldly patterned, nearly
eagle-sized, birds of prey. Indeed, before setting
his feet upon a path that led to his publication
of his treatise, “American Ornithology,”
the poet penned a poem about Osprey. I’m
sure you can find it online.
Happily for Osprey and Osprey admirers,
the birds are fully protected and their numbers
flourishing. Having recovered fully from
their reproductive suppressing brush with
DDT, today boaters on the Maurice River in
Cumberland County will pass scores of active
Osprey nests, their bulky stick structures line
the river and where fish are plentiful, the birds
may nest within 30 feet of rival pairs. This
time of year, those nests are brimming with
the heads of juvenile birds, two and four to a
nest, a testimony to the ecological health of
the Delaware Bay region. Feeding on the most
abundant and catchable fish around, Osprey
catch mostly Bunker or Menhaden, so pose no
threat to commercial or sport fishing.
Capturing fish is a highly specialized
practice for a bird and the Fish Hawk has
developed several refinements suited to the
task. First the feathers of Osprey are unusually
greasy, after diving to depths of up to 10
feet, the birds bound into the air on flailing
wings shedding silver water droplets as they
rise. The crooked-wings of Osprey may be
designed to withstand the impact of birds
dropping 50 feet to land talon’s first into
water, or the configuration may give the birds
the suction-nullifying lift they need to break
the water’s bond when they rise with fish
in tow. “Vigorous winged,” is how Wilson
described the bird and, from now until late
September, Cape May residents will be
enchanted by the sight of Osprey soaring
overhead, their piping whistles calling newly
fledged young to supper.
To see Osprey, you don’t need to drive to
the Maurice River. The birds nest in the South
Cape May Meadows, in the marshes behind
Wildwood and along the Avalon Causeway.
A fine place to see the birds is the beach at
Cape May Point State Park, a favorite fishing
location. You may even see one of those
classic tail chases, as one of the local Bald
Eagles endeavor to relieve the Osprey of its
honest-gotten prey. Eagles have young to
feed, too and kleptoparasitism is right out of
the Bald Eagle playbook.
Emmy nominations are out, and
it looks like HBO is the streaming
service to beat with a whopping 127
nominations. Whoa! Three of its
shows received a combined 74 nominations!
One of them is The Last of Us, which
has been reviewed here.
The other two HBO all-star shows are
Succession and The White Lotus, which have not
been reviewed here. Anyone watching these?
Got something to say about them? Email me at
flixyoumissed@gmail.com and let’s get your
critique featured here!
Wednesday, a Netflix reimagining from The
Addams Family tree and also reviewed here,
received 12 Emmys. Very impressive! Let’s
look at another show nominated for best comedy
among other awards.
The thought of actual jury duty makes
some people cringe, but this show is really
getting noticed. Hah! See what I did there?
When you get your “notice” for jury duty,
doesn’t your stomach drop a little? C’mon, at
least you wince for a moment. Be honest.
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
Jury Duty is an original from Amazon’s
Freevee streaming service, rebranded from
what was called IMDb-TV a few months
ago. Watch for more originals from this free
streaming service for certain. The premise
of the show is as unique as its subject matter
( you know, jury duty) is mundane. Juror #6
is Ronald Gladden, and he’s not an actor.
He’s a construction contractor who works on
solar panel installations, and he’s as real as
they come. The rest of the jury members, the
judge, lawyers, defendant, the courtroom —
all fake. It’s all a reality TV show filmed like a
mockumentary. In this show, Ronald is not in
on the secret.
He’s been told this was an actual court
case being filmed for reality TV. In fact, it’s all
a staged, and he is the only unsuspecting cast
member. So he doesn’t question why there are
cameras in the courtroom. It’s like The Truman
Show meets The Office.
James Marsden, an actual movie actor,
plays himself. Because this is California, I
guess Ronald would think that’s possible. And
when juror Barbara, played by Susan Berger, is
continually nodding off, the judge nags Ronald
(who was elected foreman) to keep waking her
up. Now THAT’s very believable too.
Most of the time watching, I’m a little
suspicious of how Ronald doesn’t know this is
all a put on. The rest of the time I’m trying to
figure out what’s scripted and what’s improvisation.
Whatever the case, the jury is NOT still
out… this show is innovative and funny!
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, learn about medicine of the past
Disease may be scary now, but in Cape
May’s Victorian heyday, it was downright
terrifying. In 1888, the infant
mortality rate was 20 percent. Today,
it’s about half of one percent. Small
wonder people were willing to give snake oil a
try. After all, snake oil was usually sold as part of
a traveling medicine show, and it’s not like there
was a CVS around the corner.
“Snake oil” is the catchall term for dubious
medicine, but it comes from a legitimate folk
remedy. Oil from Chinese water snakes is rich
in omega 3 acids, and, when rubbed on aching
joints, it can reduce inflammation and pain.
Rattlesnake oil doesn’t have the same effect, but
that didn’t stop Clark Stanley from selling it in
1893. Stanley’s oil was not what he advertised
— it didn’t contain any rattlesnakes — but it
did contain capsaicin, which may have helped
with arthritis pain. Whether it worked didn’t
concern Stanley. He marketed himself as the
“Rattlesnake King” and made a fortune.
The nexus of miracle and marketing is the
topic of the Carroll Gallery’s current exhibit,
“Quackery: The Age of Questionable Medical
Marvels.” It is funny, informative and respectful
of our forebears who sought help. Who wouldn’t
try a medicine that promises to cure your cancer
with one teaspoon a day? There’s a replica of a
peddler’s wagon and a selection of advertisements
for products to fight ailments like wrinkles,
asthma, heart disease — sometimes in the
same bottle. Like makeup man Charles Revson,
snake oil salesmen sold “hope in a jar.”
The jar might be useless, or dangerous.
There are ads for face creams containing arsenic
and an “energy potion” containing strychnine.
Cocaine and alcohol loom large. There are
potions to cure arthritis AND heartbreak, overactive
bladder AND poor vision. Some of the
ads tout products that worked. An “asthma cigarette”
sounds ridiculous, but were apparently
the delivery mechanism for stramonium, which
helped some patients. The marketing language
is disturbingly familiar, touting the cure “doctors
don’t want you to know,” vaguely science-y
words, and guarantees that were impossible. As
modern as we say we are, these sales techniques
still work, if internet ads are any indication. As
in the old days, it’s not that all these products
have no use, it’s just that they are not cure-alls.
“Quackery: The Age of Questionable
Medical Marvels” is this year’s free Carroll
Gallery Exhibit, at the Emlen Physick Estate
inside the Carriage House. Park behind the
estate or make it a stop on your walk. You can
probably read it all in a half hour. While there,
shop for books by local authors and souvenirs.
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I go to the gym and work out almost every
day. There’s a guy there that always either
makes eye contact with me or comes up to chat
about our workouts, the weather or what we’re
doing on our day off. I like him and I thought
he liked me. This has been going on for about
three weeks. Last week I gave him my number.
I haven’t heard a word, nor has he been at the
gym. Did I misread the situation? Overplay
my hand? Was I too aggressive? — Gym Girl
Dear Gym,
You did nothing wrong. It’s hard to say if
you misread the situation, but there are many
factors that might be coming into play that
may have nothing to do with you. You played
your hand, and it would appear nothing came
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
of it. Move on and stop thinking. Thinking is
overrated especially when it comes to affairs of
the heart. Enjoy your workout. Keep a positive
mental attitude. Next time, ask the prospective
Mr. Right if he wants to grab a coffee at Coffee
Tyme or Tommy’s Folly. That way, you will get
an immediate response. And do not dismiss
the fact that he might be married or otherwise
entangled, and your phone number served as a
reminder of that. His problem. Not yours.
Dear Answer Lady
There’s something off with my wife. Her
behavior has changed since she started a new
job that she loves. She’s never liked any job
and I was happy for her. But she lost 25 pounds
in a month. She’s never had friends and is
suddenly going to the beach or to dinner with
her new work “friend.” I want to follow her, but
we have two kids, five and nine years old, and
I’m the one home with them. I asked her why
we can’t go to the beach as a family and invite
her “friend” to join us. She said she needs time
for herself. I’m so afraid I’m losing her. I don’t
know what to do. — Sidelined
Dear Sidelined,
Confront her. Get a babysitter. Take your
wife to dinner at PSI. Afterwards take a walk
on the Promenade and talk. Standing on the
sidelines watching your life implode helps no
one. Perhaps there is a logical explanation.
Although, your wife’s hesitance or refusal to
introduce her new “friend” to you is suspect.
You may fear the answer, but you have an
obligation to your children to seek the truth.
Clueless at the Physick Estate:
Racing the Clock
Clueless at the Physick Estate is an
immersive experience where tour goers
travel through the 1879 Emlen Physick
Estate as an original mystery dramatically
unfolds around them. In 2023, time is the
enemy in “Racing the Clock,” written by
Jacklyn Fazio. Barrington family dinners
are notorious for bad news, but no one
expected this one to take such a sinister
turn, when the family matriarch drops
dead before dessert is served. With every
guest potentially poisoned, and not
enough antidote to go around, you must
identify the killer before it’s too late.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
COOPER is a sweet and lovable boy who lived
with a family for two years, but they can no
longer take care of him. He is a 115-pound boy,
and his leash skills are improving daily, but
he loves to explore his surroundings. Cooper
would be better suited for a family with older
children as he tends to be protective of his
family.
BELLE is a gentle chihuahua/lab mix who
came to the shelter when her owner moved
and could not take her with them. She lived in
a home with three children and is good with
other animals. She is crate trained and knows
many basic behavior cues. Belle will need a
little time to warm up but will make a great
family pet.
GATSBY is a purebred, two-year-old Rottweiler
whose owners were unable to care for
him. He knows many useful behavior cues and
loves to play in the yard. Gatsby is still young,
so he needs to work on his youthful, impulsive
behavior. He would do best if adopted into a
home with no other pets, knowledge of his
breed that would continue his trianing.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Four beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
OLIVE AND JADE are a beautiful pair of sisters
who came to the shelter as outside kittens
and have never had a real home. They are a
bit shy, but playful, smart and alert. Olive and
Jade would be good in a home with other cats
and just need a slow introduction to their new
home. They’ve both up to date on vaccinations
and spayed. This duo is ready for you!
GUMBY came to the shelter as a hoarder cat
and was fortunate enough to be upstairs in
the home. His left eye ruptured due to an
untreated URI. His vision is quite poor, but
with the love and comfort of a new home,
Gumby will blossom into a loving and trusting
cat. If you’d like to give this sweet boy a second
chance, contact the shelter.
PEDRO PASCAL is a young three-legged boy
who was hit by a car as a kitten. He is able to
get around well and knows how to use the litterbox.
He sometimes has difficulty relieving
himself due to his injuries, but this is currently
managed with daily exercise. This friendly
boy needs a loving home who can commit to
his care for the long term.
