THE ULTIMATE TOP END GUIDE 2023 8

FANNIE BAY GAOL
EXPLORING THE KIMBERLEYS
I recently visited the historic Fannie Bay Gaol, which was the
Darwin Gaol from 20/9/1883 – 1/9/1979. The gaol is located
at Fannie Bay, opposite the Cool Spot Café. It is now a
museum where you can walk through old cell blocks and the
execution gallows.
When you enter the gaol, make sure that you pick up a
brochure at the front desk, which is manned by a friendly staff
member who is always happy to answer any queries about the
gaol and local history. The brochure also provides lots of extra
information about what you are seeing and helps to find your
way around the gaol.
In 1928, the gaol expanded to accommodate female offenders,
with juvenile offenders included after 1963, also catering for
those with contagious diseases, such as leprosy (though
hopefully not at the same time!).
Toilets were very primitive with cell latrine buckets taken out
to the exercise yard and sifted over an open drain until
approximately 1960, when sewerage was introduced.
A section called Medium Security C Wing was installed in the
1960s. It was preferred by the prisoners because it had wire
mesh walls, where they could see and talk to each other, rather
than the isolation of cells with cement walls.
A very confronting part of the gaol is the gallows, which had a
pit nearly 4 metres deep covered by trapdoors. At least 8
men were hanged at Fannie Bay Gaol, but only 2 in these
gallows, which were constructed in 1952. There was also a
room for the executioner and a cell for the condemned. You
can read the stories of those 2 men on the walls of that cell. In
the image, you can see the mechanism at the side of the
gallows, which the executioner used to activate the trapdoor
covering the pit during the execution.
I highly recommend a visit to experience some of Darwin’s
incredible history - it was an amazing experience to walk
through the various buildings and imagine life as it was back
then for those ‘behind bars’.
You've done it. You’ve found Kununurra’s
You already know that the East Kimberley is a
stunning area with abundant waterways,
ancient red landscapes and majestic boab
trees.
What you should know is that your stay at
Kimberleyland has all that and more.
On the rolling green banks of our foreshore,
waterlilies bloom and the colours of the
iconic Elephant Rock come alive on sunset.
Have your breath taken away and let the
Kimberleyland Effect wash over you.
Meet our toothless, resident Freshwater
crocodile “Gummy” or view our very own
1,000-year-old Boab tree.
Here at Kimberleyland, Kununurra comes to
you.
There are no compromises with
contemporary comforts. Our onsite café
delivers coffee so good that you’ll be lining
up with the locals.
Surrounded by green parks, the foreshore
and native bushland it’s easy to forget it’s just
1.2km from Kununurra’s centre. Even closer is
Kununurra’s largest children’s playground, a
brand-new outdoor gym facility and boating
jetty.
For many of you, it’s taken a long time to get
here and it’s an honour you’ve chosen
Kimberleyland as the place your Kimberley
Memories begin.
Kimberleyland is Western Australia's only
4.5 Star Rated Holiday Park north of Perth,
the most awarded Holiday Park in the
Kimberley and among TripAdvisor’s top ten
percent of Hospitality providers globally.
Hi, my name is Maria and my family own Kimberleyland. Let me share our
story..
My family emigrated to Australia in 1981 when Kununurra was yet to
mark the map, an outback town in Australia’s last frontier and a huge
contrast to the comforts of European life.
I was born in Kununurra, the first Australian born in my family. It’s when I
was branded with my eternal love for the Kimberley.
My Father, a migrant European farmer had partnered up with tourism
pioneer Gregor McQuie to launch Kimberleyland. It was a bold venture,
an exciting endeavour ahead of it’s time.
Then tragedy struck.
The dream and the vision was heartbreakingly cut short with the sudden
and unexpected death of my father that very year. I was just one year old.
To the credit of my Mother, we remained in the Kimberley. The early
years were tough.
There was a lot of hard work involved, lots of Kimberley grit and
determination.
Eventually our family secured full ownership of the park and a new era
began. Today our family carry on with my Father’s dreams, to finish what
was started – what was cut short.
Today we have a swag full of tourism awards and are the only 4.5-star
park north of Perth on a prime piece of Kununurra waterfront.
If you want to read more about my family's story, my Mother's story is a
best selling book "A Diamond in the Dust".
When you arrive at Kimberleyland, you immediately become immersed in
all things Kimberley – spectacular sunsets, the lily flower water garden,
ancient red rocks, resident freshwater crocodiles, abundant birdlife and of
course, boab trees.
The rolling green grass of the foreshore draws a crowd of happy campers
at sunset. Cheese platters are generously shared around, wine glasses
clink and beer cans fizz open, toasting to newfound friends.
This is when the Kimberleyland effect takes over. Then you know and
never forget.
We understand the Kimberley is remote – you’ve taken a long time to
get here, perhaps years of planning and thousands of kilometres travelled.
We feel honoured that you’ve chosen us to host you and proud to share
our backyard with you. We commit to making your Kununurra touring
and launch pad to the Bungles, the Gibb and beyond all that you can
imagine and more. Welcome to Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park,
let’s take you on a tour of our park or start your research on what there
is to do in and around Kununurra – you’ve found the place where your
Kimberley memories begin.
THE ULTIMATE TOP END GUIDE 2023 22

HITTING THE ROAD
The NT is home to some of Australia’s most incredible natural wonders. We’ve picked three of
the most popular trails to road trip during the Dry Season!
EXPLORE WITH CARE
When exploring your surroundings be mindful that we
have a duty to respect the cultural significance of the
land and to protect and conserve the flora and fauna it
houses. Do not disturb or feed the animals, or
unnecessarily impact on the vegetation of these unique
and remarkable habitats.
DARWIN
Kakadu
National Park
JABIRU
Explorers Way
SUGGESTED TRAVEL TIME:
14 - 18 DAYS
A red dirt road trip for the
bucket list!
Take your time over 2+ weeks
travelling the 2230km from
Darwin to Alice Springs (or
vice versa).
Stop to see the incredible
natural icons a Uluru-Kata Tjuta
National Park, the West
MacDonnell Ranges and Devils
Marbles.
This epic journey through the
heart of the outback wouldn’t
be complete without a
stopover in the famous Daly
Waters Pub.
Litchfield
National
Park
Tjuywaliyn/
Douglas Hot
Springs Park
Cooinda
KATHERINE
Nature’s Way
SUGGESTED TRAVEL TIME:
8 DAYS
Nature’s Way is the best way to
see the national and cultural
highlights of Kakadu, Litchfield
and Nitmiluk (Katherine)
National Parks.
An easy drive from Darwin, the
almost 900km round-trip is the
perfect road trip for beginners
and all abilities.
KATHERINE
Arnhem
Land
Mainoru Outstation
Arnhem Way
SUGGESTED TRAVEL TIME:
7 - 10 DAYS
Bremer Island
Nhulunbuy
Limmen
National Park
Travel through the 700km+
unspoilt savannah woodlands
as you visit Mainoru
Outstation on your way to
Nhulunbuy.
Please note that when
travelling to Arnhem Land you
will require a permit from the
Northern Land Council.
ROAD SAFETY
Driving in the NT brings a unique set of risks, with an array of larger wildlife crossing
paths with vehicles. Dawn and Dusk will see an increase of animals on the roads, so
please use extra caution and drive slowly. Towards Zero is the NT Government Road
Safety campaign to reduce the number of lives lost on NT roads to zero.
TEMPERATURE CHECK
In the NT it can get hot, fast. Ensure you have options for shade and a good water supply. It is easy to
experience heat stroke so ensure you Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide to protect yourself. It is recommended to
have 1Ltr of water per person, per hour as a minimum.
In the Desert, temperatures will quickly drop, especially between April – September (Dry Season). If you
head towards the central region or Barkly region, ensure you pack sufficient warm clothes and bedding if
camping overnight as temperatures regularly drop below 0 degrees.
