The Future of Redwood Day: Creating Opportunity
Dear Redwood Day Community,
Welcome to the fourth edition of RD Connects! In this magazine, your fingers will “dance” through pages
of stories about all the great things happening in our School and community. Whether you are a current
or former student, parent, guardian, faculty member, or friend of Redwood Day, we sincerely hope
these stories touch your heart and deepen your connection to our School. Also, in this edition, we honor
community members who generously donated to the 2021–2022 Annual Fund, and we provide insight into
how the School stewarded our finances last academic year. Thank you for your support of Redwood Day
now and always as we work together to provide an exceptional education for our students.
This year, in particular, is an exciting one for Redwood Day as we celebrate our 60th Anniversary in
2023! Founded in 1963, we are incredibly proud of how far we have come since our beginning days with
12 students in a building on 42nd Street in Oakland. As we look forward to our future, we are filled with
enthusiasm for all of the ways in which we will continue to “grow into great,” especially with many exciting
initiatives outlined in our newly adopted Strategic Plan: Creating Opportunity. As Chair of the Board
of Trustees and Head of School, we work in close partnership with trustees, faculty, and staff to ensure
that our vision for the future of Redwood Day comes to life in all that we do every day on behalf of the
students and families we serve.
Creating Opportunity sets forth a bold vision for our School, one in which we build deeper connections
with the City of Oakland and expand access for students and families in myriad ways. Grounded in
diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), our plan keeps our students, faculty, and staff front and
center while focusing on continually refining and strengthening our programs and connections within
and beyond our campus. With compelling initiatives such as developing a health and wellness program,
implementing a design, build, and innovation summer institute for students and educators outside of the
Redwood Day community, and launching a “City as an Extension of the Classroom” initiative, to name just
a few, we are poised to embrace our future by imagining new possibilities for our community.
We honor Christine Chen (Oliver ‘19 and Jack ‘24), Chair of the Strategic Planning and Futures Committee
of the Board of Trustees, for her expert guidance and support as we worked with all constituents to craft
a collective vision for our School. Additionally, we honor the 2021–22 and 2022–23 Board of Trustees for
their dedication and commitment to ensuring the sustainability of Redwood Day for our students today
and for future generations. Please see the complete Board of Trustees roster listed on the accompanying
page for both school years.
SPOTLIGHT
ON CURRICULUM
&
INSTRUCTION
LAURIE
DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM
& INSTRUCTION
At Redwood Day, curriculum and instruction
are responsive to and shaped by student needs,
informed by strong student-teacher relationships
in which trust enables students to take on
challenges, and dedicated to engaging students in
learning that is relevant and meaningful. Teaching
and learning at Redwood Day focus on preparing
students for their next challenge, reflecting the
mission, and supporting our values centered on
diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
These characteristics of the curriculum are what
drew me to Redwood Day when I relocated to the
United States after teaching and leading curriculum
and instruction for several years at international
schools in China, India, Ethiopia, and Myanmar.
My work in public and independent schools in
the United States also contributes to the broad
perspectives and experiences I bring to Redwood
Day as an educator of 27 years.
As Redwood Day’s first Director of Curriculum
and Instruction, I am pleased and proud to build
on the work of predecessors who have facilitated
curriculum development. I believe every school
benefits from having a dedicated person with
a bird’s-eye view of a school’s curriculum to
help connect the dots and promote vision and
mission-driven programming across grade levels,
disciplines, and divisions. At the ground level,
my role involves collaborating and working with
teachers to enhance Redwood Day’s Optimal
Learning Zone practices and to further develop
and align the curriculum.
Continuous school improvement is another aspect
of my role that involves facilitating the review
and development of subject-area programs with
groups of teachers. Using a new review format
and cycle that we are implementing beginning
this school year, both the schoolwide English
Language Arts and Middle School math programs
are currently being reviewed. Review involves
studying and analyzing current research-based
practices in the subject area and internal and
external data (including assessment data, parent
and guardian perception data, and alumni data)
to identify areas of relative strength and areas for
growth in light of that research and data. Review
also involves evaluating the curriculum, instruction,
assessment, and program materials while creating
vision and aims for the subject—all of which include
outcomes that reflect Redwood Day’s mission and
values. A report of recommendations is assembled
at the end of the school year for program revisions
to be developed the following year. Next school
year, Learning Support, Lower School Math, and
the World Languages programs will be reviewed
according to the Continuous Improvement Review
Cycle Calendar.
My role also entails coordinating the Lower more refined metrics that will help us gauge
School's Associate Teaching (AT) program. progress and measure impacts. Next year, as
I have the privilege to work with and supervise part of a three-to-five-year process, we will
seven dedicated Associate Teachers who are begin the development of a set of missionreflective
skills, sometimes characterized part of a program built from the ground up
by teachers Vicky Green and
Erika Lagrisola. Vicky and
have amounted to a solid, wellstructured,
and organized
Associate Teachers partner with
“21st-century skills,” that we aim
for all students to achieve at
I look forward to getting to know
the Redwood Day community
more and more and continuing to
build relationships with faculty,
staff, students, parents, and
guardians. From the get-go, I felt
this community's warm and
welcoming nature. I’m elated to
be part of a school that values
students and their learning and
well-being, that is interested in
purview. This year, as a faculty, we defined and
further outlined the Optimal Learning Zone
living and breathing a growth mindset, and that
is dedicated to realizing its mission to inspire
students to reach for their next challenge,
(OLZ) practices that will lead to more embrace differences, and develop the intellectual
consistently applied instructional practices and emotional courage to be ready for anything.
across grades and divisions and will result in
Every Redwood Day parent and guardian is a member of the Parent Guardian
Association. Participation in the PGA is a fantastic way to make new friends and
engage with our close-knit community of families and educators.
PARENT & GUARDIAN
SPOTLIGHT
AYANNA BROWN
As a single parent of three children who have all attended Redwood Day, Ayanna Brown has enjoyed a
unique experience with the School. Her eldest daughter Briahn graduated in 2011, followed by Jasmine
in 2018, and her youngest daughter Michaela is currently a member of the class of 2025. We asked her
to share her experience and perspective as a Redwood Day parent for more than 20 years.
As told to Meredith Spencer, Director of Equity and Inclusion
What drew you to Redwood Day?
My cousin attended Redwood Day in middle school. She’s 10 years younger, and this was before I
had children. I went to her graduation and was struck by how each student was highlighted during
the ceremony. Growing up in Oakland, I attended public and parochial schools for K–8 and then
went to Choate, a boarding school in Connecticut, through the A Better Chance program. While
I had always been considered a strong student, when I got to Choate, it was really hard. I felt
unprepared for high school in various ways. In college, I worked for A Better Chance and frequently
visited Redwood Day, assisting with middle school placements. When it came time to think about
kindergarten for my first child, I immediately thought of private schools. I wanted my children to
attend a school that would prepare them for high school and beyond academically, socially, and
even athletically. I wanted a school that would offer strong academics, after-school care, sports,
and extracurricular activities as part of the curriculum. I went to the various private school fairs and
talked to all of the schools and was surprised by how rigid they were with their September 1 cut-off
date and how they wouldn’t accommodate my daughter's September 11 birthday. Redwood Day
stood out because of its flexible approach to education and the inclusion of activities like cooking,
music, sports, and Spanish in the curriculum. I was also impressed by the School’s goal to reflect
the greater Oakland community.
Left to right: Michaela, Briahn, Ayanna, Jasmine
There have been different iterations of curriculum, types of families represented, and a shift in the
School's approach to family time. When Briahn started, science classes were taught separately by
gender. When Briahn and Jasmine were younger, there were also more academic assignments that
required parent involvement. As a single mother working full time, I didn’t have the bandwidth to
sit with them and do homework and extensive projects at home. Over time, the School shifted to
emphasize more family time and provided resources for students to complete assignments during
the school day, so I no longer had to buy posterboard and supplies for projects; our family could
spend evenings just being together.
Diversity and inclusion weren’t really part of the mission of the School when I first started. There
were very few working mothers and few to no single mothers; I felt othered as a young, single, Black
mother. Until 2008, the annual Winter Concert was held at the Mormon Temple; the School decided to
find another venue where all families would feel welcomed after the passage of Prop 8. Once Jasmine
started, I began to see a lot more socioeconomic diversity, and families of all types were represented.
Now, we have parent/guardian affinity groups, including one for single/solo parents. I appreciate how
the School focuses on diversity, inclusion, and belonging and that families of all backgrounds are
welcomed and celebrated.
What notable changes have you seen since joining the community in 2002?
When I first visited campus, there was a swimming pool where the blacktop is now, but it was gone
by the time Briahn started Kindergarten. We have a beautiful new building; even with the new
construction, somehow, the campus seems larger than it was!
What are some of your family’s favorite Redwood Day memories and traditions?
• Acting in drama performances
in Middle School
• Art class with Mr. Oding
• Assemblies (especially the
Big Cats and Bubble Man)
• Book Fair
• Friday Coffee
• Garden class
• Generations Day
• The Loft in Mrs. Breland’s
first-grade classroom
• People at the curb opening
doors for students in the
morning and afternoon
• Performing in rock bands
(Jasmine loved leaving early
for sound checks!)
• X-Care
Make an Impact with
Michaela: Kindergarten Jasmine: Judy King award Briahn: 1st day of 7th Grade
How did Redwood Day prepare your children for high school and beyond?
Redwood Day really helped them with their organization and study habits. They learned how to be
independent. The academic rigor prepared them both for high school and college. They learned
how to write well. Taking Spanish beginning in Kindergarten exposed them to the language and
different Spanish-speaking cultures. In Middle School, their classes were taught exclusively in
Spanish, which prepared them for high school, where Bri and Jasmine completed their foreign
language requirement early. They developed positive relationships with trusted adults and learned
to advocate for themselves.
The girls look at Redwood Day as their super stable foundation. That was one of the reasons that
I chose a K–8 school; I went to five K–12 schools, and I wanted them to go to as few schools as
possible. I wanted them to have the same friends for a long time. They look at Redwood Day as
their second family. Briahn is 25 now and still hangs out with some of her Redwood Day friends.
Jasmine and her best friends Camille and Kori attended K–8 at Redwood Day together and even
went to high school together. They still hang out during college breaks.
What advice would you offer to newer community members?
• Subscribe to the school calendar on your phone. Look at your child’s schedule and events and ask
targeted questions about their day.
• Use the At-A-Glance calendar to mark off Back-to-School Night, Conferences, In-Services, and
other dates so you know when to take time off from work.
• Block off time to read the Redwood Day Weekly. That’s the only way that you’ll stay in the loop.
• Younger families: Park and walk your child into school for as long as possible. Time goes by so fast!
• Be a Room Parent if you have the time. Lower School is really the only time your child wants you to
be involved. Plus, you get advance notice of the fun field trips!
• Attend Friday Coffees. It’s a super easy way to meet other families.
• Get involved with the Parents/Guardians Association (PGA).
Speaking of the PGA, every parent/guardian is a member. One of my goals as Co-Vice President
is to make the PGA accessible and relatable for all families. I have also been a Room Parent,
Communications Secretary and served on the Book Fair, Generations Day, and Library Committees.
I love to read and started a book club to share my love of reading with the community and to get
to know and connect with families. Find something that interests you and volunteer. Your child
loves seeing you on campus. And if you’re around for Step-Up 2025, I invite you to join me in
celebrating 23 consecutive years at Redwood Day with a very special Soul Train line!
Legacy Giving
Alumni,
Do you want to give other students the opportunity to have the transformational
education that you had?
Would you like to pay it forward and make a lasting impact on the school that
helped shape your life and that supported you to Grow Into Great?
We've launched an initiative that allows alumni, parents, and family to make a
gift that costs them nothing now!
How is this possible?
Simply list Redwood Day as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life
insurance policy. You can list us as a 1% beneficiary, $5,000 beneficiary, or a
$50,000 beneficiary—as little or as much as you like.
You can do that now!
The good news is that you’ll still retain control over and have the flexibility to
make modifications to your plans at any time, so if your situation changes you
can amend your plans accordingly. You don’t even need to see an attorney.
Just log into your retirement account online and add Redwood Day as a
beneficiary. Easy!
Wouldn’t it be rewarding to know that you’ve left a legacy that will help
Redwood Day students for generations to come?
Alumni, parents and guardians, grandparents, and special friends can all
add Redwood Day to their will or trust. For more information, please email
advancement@rdschool.org or call 510–534–0804 x236. We’d be happy to help.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
WORLD LANGUAGE
DBI LAB
Redwood Day’s Design, Build, + Innovate Lab (DBI Lab) prepares
kindergarten through 8th-grade students to become purposedriven
designers and builders by equipping them with skills,
concepts, and mindsets to positively impact their personal
learning journeys, our community, and the planet.
What does it mean to design, build, and innovate in the DBI Lab?
In the design process, students imagine, create, construct, or plan
with a purpose. Designs may include objects, spaces, processes,
and systems. When building, students combine various parts
(objects, materials, people, processes, systems, ideas) to form
something new. And finally, when innovating, students are tasked
with introducing changes and exploring new ideas that challenge
the status quo of how something is typically done–with creativity, ingenuity, and equity.
The World Language program at Redwood Day, encompassing
Spanish or Mandarin options, aims to motivate and encourage
students as they acquire a second or additional language.
Guided by a framework of proficiency targets and levels, the
curriculum focuses on students producing the target language
through speaking and writing, and comprehending
through listening and reading experiences.
In both Mandarin and Spanish, the target
language spoken by teachers during instruction
is maximized depending on the level. Teachers
use visuals, props, and gestures to make linguistic
input comprehensible to students during a lesson.
Teachers strive to create engaging, interesting, and
motivating activities and projects in Spanish and
Mandarin. By the end of 8th grade, students
are poised to enter intermediate or advanced-level
high school language courses.
Example DBI Lab projects include: 2nd graders applying their understanding of design and the
scientific method to develop a water filtration system; 5th graders using design thinking skills to
conceptualize and build analog and digital features that prioritize an accessible user experience
for all types of people; and 6th graders engaging in a "Design for Change" challenge in which they
work in teams to tackle a social justice design problem by utilizing their design thinking skills.
ADVANCED TOPICS
This year, we introduced Advanced Topics courses for
8th-grade students. Throughout their entire K-8 experience,
we are preparing students for high school and beyond. As
students enter their final year at Redwood Day, these courses
offer a unique opportunity for students to choose a topic of
interest to study further throughout the entire year. These
courses meet two times in the eight-day rotation and are offered
in addition to core classes.
The Advanced Topics courses are designed to provide a
deeper exploration of academic content and to foster students
autonomy and agency as they choose, for themselves, the track
they would like to explore.
GARDEN
TO
The Lower School’s vibrant
Garden to Table program led
TABLE
and taught by Sara Kay gives students the opportunity
to see the world through the lens of food. Students learn
about food origins and how what we eat is connected to
the land, the environment, and people.
Students in K-5 are exposed to cooking and gardening in whole-class and small-group settings
across two sessions within the eight-day calendar cycle. Younger students learn the life cycles of
animals and plants, which includes planting, nurturing, and harvesting plant varieties. Our 4th- and
5th-grade learners use tools to build planters, raised beds, and birdhouses. All students learn kitchen
safety and knife skills, among other hands-on kitchen and cooking skills.
The Garden to Table program is interdisciplinary in nature: connections and applications are made
to Math, Social Studies, Art, and Science.
Advanced topics courses are offered in English, History,
DBI Lab, and Art.
What is a favorite memory or highlight of your experience at Redwood Day?
Winning a cross country race at Head-Royce! I came in first because
everyone else from the Redwood Day team who was faster than me was
injured but hey, it made me happy!
How did your time at Redwood Day impact you?
It taught me how to meaningfully engage with the world around me. I had a
very memorable discussion with Sabina, my 7th-grade English teacher, after
I was very upset by a scene from a book we were reading. She told me to think
about why I was so upset by the content, and told me to follow the things that
made me upset and try to fix them.
What are you up these days?
I’m a doctor, living and working in the UK. I’m heading to New Zealand next autumn to work
in emergency medicine and intensive care.
SOPHIA DENISON-JOHNSTON
2010 Redwood Day Alumni
What do you want those reading your alumni profile to know?
Stay curious and open minded. If you are doing your best at something
that inspires or excites you, you will end up exactly where you want to be.
If you try and plan out your whole life too soon, you might close yourself off
to opportunities you don’t even know about yet!
What are you up to these days?
In 2022, I joined the Latitude 35 team, an all-female rowing team that broke a
world record by rowing more than 2,400 nautical miles from California to Hawaii
in 34 days, 14 hours, and 11 minutes. We set a new world record for the fastest time
to make the journey unassisted for an all-female team. We also raised money for the
Anxiety and Depression Association of America.
Currently, I am an adventurer and bodyworker. I practice orthopedic and deep tissue massage.
What is a favorite memory or highlight of your experience at Redwood Day?
My class in 7th grade took a trip to Half Dome in Yosemite. It is California and
it was a trip taken in May, but as we started our ascent, a blizzard unleashed
on us. We proceeded to get nowhere near Half Dome and ended up
camping somewhere in the park in feet and feet of snow. Most of the kids
didn’t have proper cold-weather clothing and were forced to wear
every piece of clothing to remain warm. Overall, it was miserable, but
looking back, I loved it.
How did your experience at Redwood Day impact you?
Redwood Day created an environment where students were expected to succeed.
Those expectations are a great thing. It means the students know to show up, work hard, and live
with the result. These are extremely valuable life traits. This also allows teacher and students to work
towards the same goal; the eventual progression and graduation of exceptional students.
What are you up to these days?
I'm a sea turtle biologist. I started the Hawksbill Project that focuses on the conservation of
one of the most exploited sea turtles.
28 | REDWOOD DAY
What was a favorite memory or highlight of your experience?
The one that comes to mind is the 8th-grade backpacking trip in Yosemite.
Although I remember being incredibly uncomfortable on the trip for a variety
of reasons, I was simultaneously mesmerized and enlivened by the expansive,
beautiful nature. On the last night, rather than sleeping in the tent, Pica and I
slept under the cover of the bright stars.
How did your time at Redwood Day impact you?
Redwood Day allowed me to explore and strengthen my skills and passions. I loved
having redwood trees in the yard and being able to spend so much time alongside
nature while at school. Having a swim class and a computer class were privileges that I
didn’t quite truly appreciate until later in life. Redwood Day provided me with a solid foundation
from which to grow academically, and I am grateful for that.
What are you up these days?
I work for myself as an environmental consultant and researcher. Some of my current projects
include serving as the Co-Managing Director of the Integrated Capital Fibers Fund, the facilitator of
an International Refugee Assistance Project climate displacement working group, and as a
strategic consultant to Fibershed.
