In March of 2013, a devastating F5 

tornado ripped through Hattiesburg, 

MS leaving a major trail of destruction, 

but by the grace of God, there were no 

fatalities. Hattiesburg is the hometown 

of our very own Buddy Graves as well 

as his home Church, Wesley Southern 

Methodist. 

Buddy’s parents have attended Wesley 

Southern Methodist Church since its 

founding in 1965. The small Church, 

and its loyal members, were slated to 

host the annual Southern Methodist 

Church conference that July. There was 

some debate to move the event, but 

the consensus was to continue, as 

planned, to infuse the local economy 

and bring excitement to the Church. 

After this decision was made, the 

pastor of the Church and Buddy’s 

father got together for the conference 

pre-planning and decided to start the 

three-day event with a “singspiration”. 

They contacted Buddy to discuss and 

asked if he would assist in securing a 

group for the event. Buddy shared that 

he had been talking to a friend about 

singing again after a six-year hiatus 

from the Southern Gospel music field. 

That friend happened to be Adam 

Dungey. Buddy contacted Adam about 

the opportunity and after prayerful 

consideration and discussion with their 

families, they agreed to pursue. Adam 

agreed to reach out to Brandon and 

Buddy to Darryl. They both agreed and 

as they say, “the rest is history.”

THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT! 

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "The 

Devil Made Me Do It!" People in today's 

world do not want to take responsibility for 

their actions. It's easier to say "the devil 

made me do it" and pass blame when they 

sin. 

In Genesis 3:13, Eve told God, "The serpent 

deceived me, and I ate". Basically, she was 

using the term, "The devil made me do it." 

Pride: Passing blame onto Satan is just a 

way to attempt to maintain appearances. 

The Bible says in Romans 3:10-18 that No 

one is righteous or good. 

Deceit: People reason away their sin and 

justify their behavior. Man looks at the 

outward appearance, but God looks at the 

heart. So while we may fool man, God is 

not fooled. 

Instead of confessing and repenting of sins, 

people try to just cast blame to make 

themselves look innocent. Guess what! We 

all mess up. We all sin. We all make 

mistakes. The truth lies in how we handle 

the things we do wrong. 

Blaming Satan is actually the oldest excuse. 

Don't get me wrong, I know he can put 

things in our mind and make us think 

wrong, but we create the action. 

So why do people blame Satan for their 

sins? Let's take a look.

Blame: People give Satan too much credit. 

The Bible teaches that the devil tempts 

people, but he doesn't have the power to 

make them do anything. (1 Peter 5:8) Sin 

comes from within us. 

So let's stop with the excuses, ask 

forgiveness, and go on knowing God has set 

you free from the 

burden of sin and 

He took all of that 

on the cross so that 

you and I can live a 

life of Freedom!

Freedom is defined as 

the power or right to act, speak, or 

think as one wants without hindrance 

or restraint. 

As I pondered and thought on this 

definition , I questioned how much 

freedom we really have as citizens of 

these United States. 

It seems today the more different and 

ungodly and ugly the sin is the more 

“freedom” the person has. It’s ok to 

speak up and uphold everything 

except being a Christian. Being a 

Galatians 5:1 

Christian in this old world today is NOT 

popular. Folks can not handle the true 

meaning of the Bible anymore. They 

twist it, bend it and try their best to 

make it “ok” to live and do anything 

they feel like doing. I am all for people 

having their own beliefs and living

their lives the way they choose but 

please don’t push it down our 

children’s throats. 

In the sixties our Number one TV 

program was The Andy Griffith Show 

now look at the filth and ungodliness 

we have not only on TV shows but on 

commercials as well. I’m afraid 

Christians…. it’s because we have just

stood by and said nothing. We are 

afraid of offending but yet others 

who uphold and live an ungodly 

lifestyle speak up and criticize us. It’s 

time to stand up! We as Christians 

deserve the same freedom as any 

other American. Let’s celebrate this 

Independence Day by speaking up 

and letting everyone know where we 

stand. Love the sinner but hate the 

sin. 

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty 

wherewith Christ hath made us free, 

and be not entangled again with the 

yoke of bondage.” 

“For, brethren, ye have been called 

unto liberty; only use not liberty for 

an occasion to the flesh, but by love 

serve one another.”

Cover Artist of the Month 

July 2023 

Greg Sullivan was born in Hammond, 

Louisiana and began singing at the age 

of 9 at a Summer Backyard Meeting. At 

age 15, he sang in church for the first 

time to a song we all know, "Why Me 

Lord?" 

Greg and Lisa reside in Holden, 

Louisiana and are the proud parents to 

Kaleigh Fuetes, who was married in 

2020 and has a story of God's

redemptive grace, and Brett who was 

born with autism. Brett was featured in 

Greg's most popular songs to radio are 

"The Caption", "3 Nails, 3 Days", and 

NJR Digital's April, 2022 Autism "Beginning Again" which reached #23 in 

Awareness Magazine. Greg shares their Singing News Southern Gospel Top 100 

story as he ministers in song wherever and #1 Bluegrass song in Christian 

he goes. Greg and Lisa are huge 

advocates for special needs children as 

they were one of the host families for 

There's Hope Special Needs Conference 

Voice Magazine and #3 on New Journey 

Radio. A few other songs released were

In 1992, Greg began traveling 

with the Joyers from Loranger, LA. 

He has also traveled with Sonlight 

from Walker, LA, Masters2, The 

Harrells, and Chronicle. In April 

2018, Greg started his solo ministry.

Greg's recent release is "On My Way 

Back" which is doing really well in the 

charts. 

Greg has had many nominations and 

awards including 2021 Sunrise Artist of 

the Year Diamond Awards, 2021 Mike 

Watson Achievement Award, 2020 

Gospel Music Fans Award Favorite 

Southern Gospel Soloist, and most 

recently, 2023 Singing News Fans Award 

Top 10 Nominee for Favorite New Artist. 

Greg has many mentors including Ricky 

Atkinson (his producer), Jack 

Armstrong, Bro. Benny Jones (Sonlight), 

and Winford Hill (The Joyers). He is a 

supporter of Artists for Special Needs 

(There's Hope Special Needs 

Conference). Greg's heart for ministry 

is evident in everything he does. 

Outside of ministering, you will find 

Greg enjoying spending time with his 

family, hunting, fishing, playing golf, and 

following the LSU Tigers. 

Greg stated that he is honored to be 

featured this month in NJR Digital. "I am 

so thankful for how New Journey Radio

Sometimes a problem seems 

astronomically large. 

Such was the case on a day I made an 

emergency visit to my prayer closet. 

My heart was gripped with fear. I 

prayed and confessed my doubt and 

worry, and begged God for guidance 

and comfort. As always, He had a 

word in season for the weary.

I flipped open the Bible I had nearby, 

and began reading the first verse my 

eyes fell on: “Lift up your eyes on high, 

and behold who hath created these 

things, that bringeth out their host by 

number: he calleth them all by names 

by the greatness of his might, for that 

he is strong in power; not one faileth.” 

(Isaiah 40:26) 

Not one faileth. As I read and reread 

that last line over and over, my “big” 

worry began to shrink small. My great 

concern was not worthy of comparison 

to the cosmos. 

If you’ve ever looked up at the night sky 

and attempted to count the stars, you 

know it is an impossible task. But how 

much more impossible would it be to be 

tasked with keeping those stars from 

falling? From spinning out of orbit and 

exploding into each other? From 

plummeting to the earth and setting our 

planet on fire? We gaze up at blazing 

balls of white-hot gas and gush in awe 

of their beauty. Not once do we fear 

these constellations may come crashing 

down. Not one faileth. 

Attempting to comprehend the 

complexity of the heavens is humbling 

and awe-inspiring. The universe is 

constantly expanding, and it's estimated 

its vast depths contain upwards of 200 

billion trillion stars! Consider the stars 

and Who named them! (Psa 147:3) 

Consider Who placed them and keeps 

them in place! Not one faileth! 

When our problems seem 

astronomical, we can trust the God 

who keeps the cosmos in check. It is by 

His power alone that the heavenly 

bodies exist and remain, and God’s 

supreme power is on daily display for 

our reminding. “For his invisible 

attributes, namely, his eternal power 

and divine nature, have been clearly 

perceived, ever since the creation of 

the world, in the things that have been 

made…” (Rom 1:20) Day by day and 

night by night the skies declare God’s 

authority over all. Not one faileth! 

If God can place planets and galaxies of 

stars, and keep them all perfectly 

suspended and infinitely in place, then 

God can handle every finite detail of 

our lives. If He can order the universe 

and keep it in perfect order, He can 

order our lives and keep our lives in 

order. If we can look up at the night sky 

without fear, then we can look at that 

bill, that diagnosis, and that family 

situation without fear. God is in control. 

Not one faileth! 

You are safe in the hands of the God 

who holds the heavens. When your 

problems feel planet-sized, just look 

up! Not one thing He has created and 

set His eye to watch over will fail. Not 

the stars, and not you!

BROTHERS 4 

BROS.4 is a Southern Gospel Group from 

Central Mississippi. They offer high energy, 

tight harmonies, and quality vocals while 

proclaiming the love of Jesus through song. 

Bros.4 is rooted in traditional Southern 

Gospel but strives to bring a modern feel 

and sound to the genre. Bros.4 covers an 

array of Christian music styles to fit most 

audiences. 

BROS.4 members consist of Adam Dungey, 

from Clinton, MS (bass singer & manager) 

who is a third generation bass singer. 

Buddy Graves is from Brandon, MS and 

sings lead. He and his father are walking 

encyclopedias of Southern Gospel information. Brandon Wilson is from Laurel, MS 

and brings many talents to the group. He sings baritone and plays the piano as well 

as handling the majority of the song arrangements. Darryl Smith is from Hattiesburg, 

MS singing tenor and running sound for the group. Each member brings their own 

unique background and talent to the group. In short, these four men are brothers 

under Christ’s Blood and are blessed to be brought together for the single purpose 

of sharing the Gospel through song. 

They have had several song releases and charting songs. In the Summer of 2022, 

they released "Lord Deliver Me" and before that, "Every Knee Shall Bow". Their 

current project title is "Sweetest Song I Know". They have also been nominated for 

several awards. 

The group participates in several 

localized fundraisers throughout the 

year. In addition, they support 

The Salvation Army and 

several of its ministry endeavors.

The Phillips Family

The Phillips Family consists of three 


brothers and a sister. "We have been singing 

for the Lord now for 30 years! Our roots go 

way back up in the hills of Western North 

Carolina in a little town called Minneapolis. 

Our Dad pastored Minneapolis Baptist 

Stephen Phillips writes all the songs for the 

group and has seen great success over the 

years winning The Singing News songwriter 

contest with a song called "Satisfied". Clint 

Church where we grew up around a Phillips is the oldest brother and sings the 

mountain choir and learned to sing harmony 

at a young age. This laid the foundation for 

what our group has become today."

"Blanket of Grace", "I Can’t Quit", "This Same

The Phillips Family considers their style 

Southern Gospel with a country twist. Their 

current project is titled, "It Is Written". 

When not ministering on the road, you will 

find Stephen Phillips working for the State 

of South Carolina helping individuals with 

disabilities become job ready as well as the 

owner of Heavenly Smoked Coffee Co. 

Tabitha is a Independent Dental Hygienist. 

Joel is the Pastor of Northside Baptist 

Church in Gaffney, SC. 

When asked what their favorite groups or 

artists were, they each have their own 

favorite. Stephen's - The Erwins and Brian 

Free and Assurance as well as Diamond Rio. 

Tabita's - Brian Free and Assurance as well 

as Rascal Flatts and Diamond Rio. Clint 's - 

Brian Free and Assurance as well as 

Journey. Joel's - The Rowlands. Even 

though they like a lot of the same, they say 

without question that their mentors are 

Greater Vision and The Rowlands. 

The Phillips Family supports its local 

church, Highpoint Baptist Church, and 

members of the group each support other 

missionaries and ministries. 

"If you would have told us thirty years ago 

we would be singing as a family all over the 

country, we would have said you were crazy, 

there is no way we can do that. This has not 

been a job for us, this has been a calling God 

has laid on our lives because there is no way 

we could ever do this on our own. We agree 

with the Apostle Paul when he said: “I am 

what I am by the grace of God.” We want our 

ministry to do two things, Lift up the name 

that’s above every name and edify the body 

of Christ. If you haven’t already, please take 

a moment and listen to our music. We 

believe every song will minister to your 

heart."

Jesus be the Center 

My Life 

Jesus 

When Clerow Wilson turned 16, he was 

ready to get out of foster homes and 

reform school, so he lied about his age 

and joined the U.S. Air Force. Blessed 

with a non-stop personality, he 

entertained fellow airmen with so many 

funny stories they claimed he was 

“flipped out.” The name stuck. 

Leaving the Air Force, “Flip” Wilson found 

work as a bellhop and started 

performing between paid acts at the 

hotel’s stage show. Before long he was a 

successful comedian. One of Flip’s most 

popular characters was Geraldine Jones, 

whom he portrayed in a dress, a coppercolored 

wig, and with exaggerated facial 

expressions. 

Geraldine was constantly misbehaving, 

crossing the line, and violating her 

conscience. But she had a one-sentence 

explanation for her behavior: “The devil 

made me do it.” 

The phrase, “The devil made me do it,” 

STUCK and became part of the 

entertainment lingo. 

I wonder why. On its surface, it’s not a 

particularly funny line. 

Perhaps it struck our funny bones 

because it struck a nerve. We know 

we’re sinners. We’re bewildered at how 

easily we do wrong and how hard it is to 

do right. What's the reasoning behind 

our thinking and evil habits? 

To most, it sounds like a good excuse. In 

some way, this tagline became an 

expression of national self-justification: 

“The devil made me do it.” 

Here's a different angle. The Center. 

Let’s face it: Whatever or whoever we 

find at the center of some organization 

or activity is usually the MOST 

IMPORTANT.

And the same could be said of us as individuals: 

Whatever occupies the center of our life is what we deem most 

prominent or important. 

That is also where we pour ourselves into. AND WHAT'S AT THE 

CENTER IS WHAT WE BECOME. 

And that raises the question..... Who or what is at the center of 

your life? 

With God AND ONLY GOD at the center of our lives...WE FIND 

BALANCE. Without balance we find ourselves walking (funny, 

sideways, our posture is messed up and out of whack). 

What does the Bible say about POSTURE? 

FIRST, Growing up did you ever have your mom or dad tell you to 

"SIT UP" or "SIT UP STRAIGHT" Bad Posture becomes a HABIT and 

will affect you the rest of your life. 

For a believer, Good or Proper Posture is where we submit and 

align ourselves with God to live UPRIGHTLY. As we align to God, 

our spiritual health improves because we learn to: Walk in His will. 

(Psalm 1:1 84:11, John 14:6, 1 John 1:5-7) 

Give ear to the Holy Spirit, and adhere to the convictions of our 

heart as we follow His PRECEPTS and COMMANDMENTS. So in one 

(1) word, the PROPER POSTURE for a BELIEVER IS: UPRIGHT. It is 

the posture that links “sitting” with “walking” and “standing” (Psalm 

1) The PROPER UPRIGHT POSITION is “bowing the knee.” 

Whoever sits on “the throne” of your life—either yourself or Christ 

—is the center of your life.

Church has never been something extra for 

me to do. It was just a way of life. I can't 

remember a time growing up that we weren't 

in church every time the doors were opened. 

Because of that upbringing, I'm not one that 

can tell you that I was saved at a particular 

age. I don’t have a story of abuse, alcoholism, 

or drugs that brought me to an altar. I just 

always remember having a relationship with 

God. I’ve always thought that because I didn’t 

have that kind of experience or because I 

never really did anything bad to bring me to 

an old fashioned altar, I didn’t think I had a 

testimony. Now, I did things in my life not 

pleasing and had to ask forgiveness but 

nothing life altering. 

I’ve realized over the last several years that I 

do have a testimony. See a testimony is a test 

turned into a story. We’ve had many times in 

our life that we’ve been tested through 

something, whether in our relationship, with 

our family, or in ministry, but I truly believe 

that my testimony to tell others and that 

others can relate to began in 2008. I won't 

rehash details, but pain is pain and through 

God's help, I came out of a dark depressed 

state. 

I’ve cried many tears and faked it on the 

outside. I remember crying many times in my 

bathroom alone and just crying out loudly

and in so much pain. I was depressed and in a 

place that I never thought I would be. But 

God! 

After my test, the Lord gave me 2 songs back 

to back. One was "Sweet Whispers" which 

tells of God speaking sweet whispers to my 

soul. When I’m down and feel discouraged, 

His word makes me whole. I hear the 

sweetness of His voice as He calms all my 

fears. It's Jesus that is with me and if I'll just 

listen, it’s his voice that I will hear. This song 

has been a hope to so many people and I'm 

proud to say it made it into a few charts. 

The other song I wrote was "Cry Out to 

Jesus". It doesn’t matter what you’re going 

through, when you feel like you are at your 

breaking point, there’s one of 3 things that 

you’ll do; wallow in self pity, try to fix it on 

your own, or cry out to Jesus. 

Cry when your heart is breaking. 

Cry when you can't see the end. 

Cry out to Jesus. He's a forever friend. 

Cry through the storms you're facing. 

Cry when it seems all is gone. 

Cry out to Jesus. 

You don't have to fight it on your own. 

Let Jesus calm your storm today 

and turn you test into a story.
